A book that’s a spin-off of author Dav Pilkey’s popular Captain Underpants series will no longer be published by Scholastic, which also asked that copies in circulation at libraries and other distributors be returned.
In a statement, Scholastic said that it will no longer publish or distribute Pilkey’s 2010 graphic novel, The Adventures of Ook and Gluk: Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future. It claimed the author supported the move.
“Together, we recognize that this book perpetuates passive racism. We are deeply sorry for this serious mistake,” the company said, without citing specifics.
“Scholastic has removed the book from our websites, stopped fulfillment of any orders (domestically or abroad), contacted our retail partners to explain why this book is no longer available, and sought a return of all inventory. We will take steps to inform schools and libraries who may still have this title in circulation of our decision to withdraw it from publication.

The Network, a long-dormant new wave band that does “not” feature members of Green Day, has returned with their first music in 17 years.
“The Network were formed in the year 2003, fulfilling an ancient prophecy predicting that we, its chosen members, would issue a stern warning to mankind in the form of music,” the secretive band said in their manifesto. “Released as the album titled Money Money 2020, we shined the headlights upon the follies and vanity of mankind. Here in the U.S./Canada, industry comps are pegged to Warner Bros. Feb. 8 release The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, which is also expected to do in the mid $40Ms, and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation ($44M opening).
Another previous prolific prequel from Dwa, Kung Fu Panda 3, opened to $41.2M back in January 2016 via Fox, and finaled at $143.5M.

New Line’s The Nun officially became the highest-grossing title in The Conjuring universe this weekend with a running global total of $330M, besting the $320M worldwide haul of The Conjuring 2 which previously owned that record.
With a net production cost of $22M, The Nun is bound for at least a $100M-plus profit after all ancillaries when you consider that The Conjuring 2 minted close to that figure off a production cost that was close to double that plus $100M P&A costs. Annabelle: Creation last year with a combined P&A and production cost of $115M saw $306.5M in global ticket sales which ultimately yielded $108.7M in black ink.
Much of The Nun‘s success has been driven by Spanish-speaking markets abroad with Mexico being the top with $21.5M followed by Brazil second with $17M. Spain is up in the top territories as well with $10.5M while Columbia has grossed $6.2M.

Update: DreamWorks’ Animation threequel How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World from series director Dean DeBlois will now open on Feb. 22 instead of March 1 next year. DeBlois has been touring clips of the movie at Tiff and will be at New York Comic-Con to show off elements to fans next weekend.
Dragon moves away from a very busy March 1 frame that includes MGM’s Dwayne Johnson pic Flirting With My Family, Lionsgate’s Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral and Chaos Walking, and Fox’s The Kid Who Would Be King. On Feb. 22, Dragon‘s new competition is just Paramount/Sk Global’s The Rhythm Section.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the June 18 episode of “The Bachelorette.”
Following last week’s bloodbath episode, which landed two suitors in the hospital, Week 4 on “The Bachelorette” brought a little more love and a little less pain, but still plenty of drama.
Picking up at last week’s cocktail party, the episode opened with Becca Kufrin handing out roses to her 17 remaining men (after Clay went home ahead of the rose ceremony last week to get surgery). David, who was hurt last week after he fell out of his bunk bed, returned to the Bachelor Mansion with a broken nose and bruised face to receive an early rose. The Bachelorette sent Ryan and Mike home, bringing the count to 15 men still in the running for Kufrin’s heart.

Stroller is known for writing and directing kid-themed material such as Captain Underpants and The Muppets, as well as raunchier stuff like Neighbors. Exclusive: Captain Underpants director David Soren tells us about the homage to Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia that was cut from the film.
Mild spoilers for Captain Underpants lie ahead
Regular readers of this site will know of our love for the Captain Underpants film, that arrived in cinemas last summer. It’s a terrific adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s books, and a genuinely very funny family movie. As such, it didn’t do anywhere near as well as it deserved at the box office, and come the Oscar nominations, let’s just say one or two ‘less good’ movies took the spot that Underpants surely deserved.
I caught up with the film’s director, David Soren, a week or two back to discuss the movie post-release, and he filled me on a sequence that never made it to the final film. A sequence that would have been a...

Captain Underpants didn't earn billions, or lots of gongs. But it's one of the best animated films of 2017. We caught up with its director.
Criminally overlooked by most awards bodies, Captain Underpants remains one of the finest animated treats of the past few years. On its release in UK cinemas last summer too, it fell short of the box office totals of the completely shinotverygood The Emoji Movie, and couldn’t land too many gloves on franchise fodder such as Despicable Me 3.
And yet it’s brilliant. It was profitable, too, but not the huge blockbuster success this writer for one thinks it deserved to be.
What, then, does the man who directed it make of the last six months, and of the reception to the film? I contacted David Soren, and we had a chat…

The first cinema screenings in 35 years took place in Saudi Arabia over the weekend...
Many steps forward, a few steps back. For 35 years, cinema has been banned in Saudi Arabia, a ban that’s finally been lifted. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has brought in reforms that have reversed the ban that was introduced in the early 1980s. Films that are screened will still have to adhere to moral values, but public showings of films are back on, with the next decade set to see a couple of hundred cinemas open up in Saudi Arabia.
This weekend, though, saw a makeshift cinema put together. And the first film to screen, following the lifting of the ban? Er, that’s be the astoundingly bad The Emoji Movie. According to Reuters, though, it also looked as though families got to enjoy Captain Underpants on the big screen as well.

It's become a surprise commercial and critical hit - so what has the new Jumanji film got right?
Spoilers lie ahead for Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle.
Over the weekend, I was back at my local multiplex to see the quite wonderful Coco. On the way in, I saw the manager of said picture palace, and we had a bit of a chat. He’s a friendly man, and just the kind of manager you want: always checks that everyone’s okay, is there if anything goes wrong.
He’s also good for a bit of insider chat, too. And we got talking about Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle.
I don’t think I was alone in inwardly sighing when I first learned of a reboot/sequel to Jumanji. I don’t hold massive affection for the original (although I thought Zathura was great), but still enjoyed it.

“Captain Underpants” turned out to be one of the animated surprises of the year as DreamWorks’ cheapest, most unconventional feature (outsourced to Canada and made for $38 million). Adapted from Dav Pilkey’s popular children’s books, it was a stripped down, comic strip of a movie that didn’t talk down to kids or adults and took all sorts of quirky chances.
It revolves around two fourth-grade pranksters, George (Kevin Hart) and Harold (Thomas Middleditch), who create comic books about a a superhero named Captain Underpants and hypnotize their principal, Mr. Krupp (Ed Helms), into becoming their superhero when he separates them.
An Experiment in Cost-Cutting and Outsourcing
As a result of cost-cutting and reorganization in 2015, DreamWorks outsourced to Technicolor-owned Mikros Image in Montreal (“The Little Prince,” “Mune: Guardian of the Moon”). “It came about because the resources at the studio were on to other movies [‘Trolls’ and ‘Boss Baby’],” said producer Mireille Soria.
