Given the state of guns and violence in America, and how the unspeakable insanity of a few can ruin lives of many, I present the healing calm of "Mmlj" by the La-based The Eagle Rock Gospel Singers. Heavenly Fire, their debut album, will be released on August 4th. Recorded with Matt Wignall (Cold War Kids, J. Roddy Walston and the Business) and led by the remarkable vocalist Kim Garcia, it won't be long before The Eagle Rock Gospel Singers become household names. You can catch them at upcoming festivals including Austin City Limits, the High Sierra Music Festival, and Pygmalion Music Festival.

Singer-songwriter Nick Waterhouse, who impressed with his 2012 debut Time’s All Gone and raised our expectations even higher with a standout performance at Cmj this year, has announced forthcoming LP Holly, due out in March of 2014. The album, produced by Waterhouse and Kevin Augunas (Cold War Kids) is a cohesive selection of work that, presented together, tells a story. “Thematically this record feels more like a novella, or poem with sections, or even a film, than a collection of songs," said Waterhouse of the album. "It is a work of fiction with a protagonist, but also a floating omniscient...

Long Beach, Ca. indie rockers Cold War Kids hit Chicago for a sold-out show at The Metro in Wrigleyville Saturday evening.
The band this month released their fourth studio album -- titled "Dear Miss Lonelyhearts" -- and played songs off that album as well as older hits like "Hang Me Up To Dry" and "Hospital Beds," The Depaulia noted in its review of the show.
Photographer Joshua Mellin was on hand for the show and shared a few shots from the action.

The Cold War Kids are back with a new album, premiering exclusively on HuffPost Entertainment. "Dear Miss Lonelyhearts," the band's first studio album since 2011's "Mine Is Yours," leaps from the start line with the previously released "Miracle Mile" and doesn't really let up.
The record takes its inspiration from a smart work on self-examination, Nathanael West's novel "Miss Lonelyhearts." "'Dear Miss Lonelyhearts' is taken from a book about an advice columnist who has a crisis about his readers suffering and his inability to truly help them unless he examines himself," vocalist Nathan Willett told HuffPost. "The struggle of his character worked their way into many of the songs."
But since this is the Cold War Kids we're talking about, the "struggles" come to listeners in the form of well-tailored, drum-heavy tracks that offset Willett's sometimes-mournful, sometimes-elated but always haunting voice. That blend of highs and lows has...

Cold War Kids: Seung-wan’s Latest a Sprawlingly Plotted Encounter with Communism
For his first non-Korean set film, top notch action director Ryoo Seung-wan’s latest film, The Berlin File, still distinctly reflects his trademark style while reflecting a unique international focus of modern political intrigue. Once the protégé of Park Chan-wook in the 90s, Seung-wan has gone on to foster a successful reputation as one of the most notable new directors from South Korea, already having established his trademark as a master visualist, especially when it comes to some impressively staged action sequences. After the success of his 2010 film, The Unjust, which was one of the biggest moneymakers in South Korea that year, his latest shows an impressive shift in scope. However, like his last title, Seung-wan’s narrative also suffers from an overly intricate plot which sometimes hinders the otherwise kinetically paced narrative.

As far as celeb attendance goes, the DNC tends to be where it’s at — Hollywood does have a reputation to live up to, after all. But 2012 is not 2008 and while the Dems have certainly attracted a few ounces of star power to the convention, it’s not going to be the first-class lounge/Oscar backstage feeling it was four years ago, when the Cold War Kids opened a Shepard Fairey art exhibit and Google co-hosted a party with Vanity Fair. While the Rnc had Clint Eastwood and his now even-more-famous sidekick — the chair — the DNC boasts parties with Will.

The story around Leonard Cohen's 12th album, Old Ideas, isn't exactly uplifting -- the 77-year-old songwriter is said to have made it to recuperate money frittered away by his former manager. But the upshot is a fantastic new album, and a flurry of inventive Cohen covers in honor of it. Check out the Cold War Kids' "There Is A War," which takes Cohen's smoky ballad and turns it all funky.

It’s hard to believe that we are already about to wave goodbye to 2011. It’s been quite a kickass year for music too with new albums from all sorts of big-names artist. However, considering the wealth of bands out there these days – thanks to modern technology making it an easier process than ever before – it can be tricky to even get the attention of one’s own fans.
So while everyone is freaking out about the new Lady Gaga or Bon Iver record, I find myself listening to plenty of other albums much more – like my personal album of the year (to which New York magazine agrees), Canadian act Austra’s debut, Feel It Break. We felt it was our duty (and privilege) to introduce you to some of the best albums in 2011 that didn’t get the full-blown attention they deserved.
Read on to see which albums made the cut!

Young Man, aka Colin Caulfield, began to grow an audience for himself from a series of YouTube videos he did performing various covers of Ariel Pink, Bon Iver and Beach House. Eventually, his cover of Deerhunter's "Rainwater Cassette Exchange" grabbed some real attention after it caught the eye of Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox, who hailed it as "fantastically superior to the original."

Austin City Limits was back celebrating its 10th anniversary this weekend, a little earlier than its typical October slot, which helps explain the temperatures being a solid ten degrees higher than I recall from year's past. It's the last of the music festival season's "big four" fests – Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapallooza obviously being the other three – and with Austin, Texas being rain-free for three months, I was a bit weary of how I'd handle the blistering sun.
Luckily for me, Theophilus London was ready to make me forget about the weather. Donning a jet-black tank top and equally dark cowboy hat with a flat bill all the way around, London rocked some tunes from his righteous Lover’s Holiday Ep and some select tracks from his recent full-length debut Timez Are Weird These Days. He cut one of his tracks short when he was inspired by a...

J. Cole was one of the artists who was billed to perform on the first day of 2011 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. The Roc Nation rapper paid homage to his two idols Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. during his set on Thursday, June 9.
"They've got all these incredible rock bands out here that we respect and we love," Cole said. "They get to cover they favorite artist's songs; why the f*** can't we do that?" He then covered the late rapper's 1996 single "I Ain't Mad at Cha", and shouted to the crowd, "Ya'll make some noise for motherf***ing Tupac Shakur."
Cole's tribute to Notorious B.I.G. came when he played "Higher", a track lifted from his "Friday Night Lights" mixtape. The song features The Isley Brothers' "Between the Sheets" which was sampled by Biggie on his classic 1994 hit "Big Poppa".

Indio, California — Despite finding message-board haters among some festival vets for snagging a headlining spot at the 2011 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Kings of Leon won over the first-day crowd on Friday night, as the masses in attendance couldn't help but sing and sway to the band's radio-friendly rock.
Saying they were "tired of playing the new stuff," the Kings dug out "Molly's Chambers" from their pre-big-time 2003 debut Ep, Holy Roller Novocaine, which joined more-recent hits "On Call," "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody."
The rockers' Who-reminiscent "Black Thumbnail" finale of feedback and drum pummeling ended not with smashed guitars, but with good-ol'-boy singer Caleb Followill knotting up his handkerchief to toss into the adoring crowd.

The schedule for this weekend's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has at last been revealed, and in typical music-fest fashion, it is forcing fans to make heart-wrenching decisions. Anyone that has ventured to a major music festival, especially one of Coachella's magnitude, knows that they will inevitably have to choose between, not one or two, but up to four or five of the newest wave of indie bands and veteran acts playing simultaneously.

Music festivals are a great opportunity to see a bunch of your favorites bands all at once, sometimes simultaneously on side-by-side stages where you can run back and forth and make your musical dreams come true. Unless, of course, that sounds like a complete nightmare to you and you would rather clean the floor of Grand Central station with your tongue than watch Cold War Kids amid the huddled masses. Luckily, this year's Coachella Music Festival, which runs from April 15-17, has solutions for everyone.
With Wiz Khalifa, Broken Social Scene, Men, The Kings of Leon, !!!, The National, Black Keys, Robyn, Arcade Fire, Duran Duran, Interpol, The Strokes, Cut Copy, Pj Harvey, Titus Andronicus, Foals, the Kills, Yacht, and a lot more slated to play, this year's Coachella Music Festival might be worth braving the throngs of people. The wireless internet situation has turned me into something of a nomad. I wander downtown Austin seeking one of three things: free drinks, free food, or free wifi. Obviously there's wifi all over the convention center, but it's packed most of the time so I tend to seek out slightly less crowded places to sit my ass down and write. Today, I'm writing in the Sobe Lizard Lounge enjoying some damn thing or another that has a Sobe drink in it. After this I'm hunting down food. Here's your Monday night TV:
7:00pm: "Inside the Actors Studio" on Bravo. Guest this week is Bradley Cooper.
8:00pm: "The Bachelor" on ABC. 15th season finale. Where some lucky lady will with the ultimate prizes. Not the Bachelor himself, he kinda sucks, I mean the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of tabloid "exclusives" that she'll be able to give in the next few weeks.

Rumors have been circling the web regarding the highly anticipated Bonnaroo music festival for about a month, and now the official line-up has been released.
In January, someone with too much time on their hands threw together a fake line-up for the Manchester, Tn festival including the likes of U2, Lil' Wayne, The Strokes and Drake.
There are more than a few common threads (Lil' Wayne! Girl Talk! Florence + The Machine!) between the fake and real line-ups, but we are bummed that Drake didn't make the cut. Eminem taking top billing was a nice surprise, though.
Check out the full list of performers below, which also includes Arcade Fire, fresh off their Grammy win.
The festival is slated for June 9-12, 2011 and tickets will be available starting Feb. 19 and 12 noon on bonnaroo.com.
Eminem
Arcade Fire
Widespread Panic

On Tuesday (February 15), organizers announced the lineup for the 2011 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, set for June 9-12 in Manchester, Tennessee. And, boy, it's going to be interesting to hear the purists' take on this year's bill.
Browse photos of the 2011 Bonnaroo performers.
Unlike earlier, decidedly crunchy editions of the fest, the 2011 lineup is topped by two of the hugest hip-hop acts in the business — Eminem and Lil Wayne — along with newly crowned Grammy champs Arcade Fire and the Black Keys. Other acts on the bill include Mumford & Sons, the Strokes, the Decemberists, Florence and the Machine, Big Boi, Wiz Khalifa and Robyn.
Of course, there are still some nods to Bonnaroo's roots: Fest vets Widespread Panic return once again, as do My Morning Jacket and the String Cheese Incident.

The lineup for the 2011 Sasquatch! Music Festival has been announced, and, in keeping with both its locale (the hilly expanses of Washington) and its mascot (a benevolently hirsute man-ape), the fest will feature some of the Pacific-Northwestiest, beard-iest bands in the land.
Foo Fighters, Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse and Wilco top the bill for the tenth annual 'Quatch, scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, May 27-30, at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington. Also on the bill: Bright Eyes, the Flaming Lips (performing their '99 stunner The Soft Bulletin), the Decemberists, Iron & Wine, Rodrigo y Gabriela and Robyn.
All in all, organizers announced more than 80 bands for the 2011 Sasquatch fest, a list that includes the recently reactivated Death From Above 1979, Cold War Kids, the recently de-activated Wolf Parade,...

On their 2006 debut, Robbers And Cowards (and to a lesser extent on 2008’s Loyalty To Loyalty), Cold War Kids scratched out a sort of rag-and-bone sophistication, turning scavenged bits of clattering indie-rock, needling blues riffs, and Nathan Willett’s soulful howl into something raw and romantic. If Robbers And Cowards were a person, the new Mine Is Yours would be staring down at it disdainfully from a penthouse window. Described by Willett as “richer and classier,” the group’s third effort lolls in the lap of studio-gloss luxury provided by Kings Of Leon producer Jacquire King, seemingly aspiring ...

Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell has long dreamed of taking his festival overseas. After announcing earlier this year that he would finally make that vision come true by putting on a Lollapalooza in Chile in April, he unleashed the lineup for the two-day event on Friday (January 28).
The top of the roster reads like a who's who of past Lolla performers and includes such headliners as Kanye West, the Killers, 30 Seconds to Mars and, of course, Farrell's own Jane's Addiction.
The show, which will take place in O'Higgins Park in Santiago on April 2 and 3, will also feature the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Deftones, Fatboy Slim, the Flaming Lips, Cypress Hill, 311, Cold War Kids, the National and Ben Harper. After nearly 20 years of wandering the U.S. and then putting...

This is around the time of year that living in Miami starts to have a serious impact on my perception of the world. While we're having the occasional chilly evening, we're past the time of year that requires anything heavier than a sweatshirt. I have to keep reminding myself that it's winter in other parts of the world as opposed to the season we're having here, which I fondly refer to as "Not Hurricane Season." Mostly, this makes any of my friends and family who live north of Orlando begin to hate me with a burning passion, so I'm going to apologize in advance for the gloating I will definitely be doing over our mild weather and sunny days. Of course, I also have to go bathing suit shopping a clear four months before most of you. Here's your Wednesday night TV:

A week after Cake landed their first #1 debut, the Decemberists also put up their best-ever career numbers, easily taking over the top spot on the Billboard 200 with a strong debut for their most straightforward work to date, The King Is Dead.
The big debut crushes their previous chart best, notched in 2009 when their rock opera The Hazards of Love moved 19,000 copies in its first week and came in at #14. The King smashes that debut figure by selling nearly 94,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, halting the string of record-low #1 sales figures.
The Decemberists lead a stampede of new names into the top five, which also includes the Kidz Bop 19 collection at #2 (70,000); Science & Faith, the latest from Irish soft rockers the Script (#3, 49,000); a career-best bow for punk lifers Social Distortion...

Cold War Kids celebrated the release of their new album Mine Is Yours (which hit the streets today) with a record release show on Monday night (January 24) at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles. Fans squeezed into the sparse warehouse space to catch the intimate yet in-your-face performance. The dim lights and plywood walls made it feel like the band — Nathan Willet, Jonnie Russell, Matt Maust and Matt Aveiro — were playing a backyard barn party — a very special treat indeed.
When we last heard from Cwk, they had just released their Ep Behave Yourself and were about to head to Nashville to record their next full-length. It marked the first time that the foursome worked with an outside producer (Jacquire King, the man behind the fist-pumping Kings of Leon tunes that you know and love).
The resulting album finds the Kids recapturing their signature soul-punk sound, but...

Now that Conan O'Brien has been back on the air for a few months and his shows have not only had the same kind of water cooler following as ever but are also putting up big ratings numbers, you can expect the late night arena to heat up sooner or later. It's uncertain who will fire the first shot, but now that we're a year out from 2010's great late night war, it's time to get back to the business of figuring out exactly who is going to be on top.

On the band’s third LP, Cold War Kids seem rather stunted since their 2006 hit “Hang Me Out to Dry.” Between lead singer Nathan Willett’s gratingly heavy-handed vocal delivery and the album’s inventory of hook-less atmospherics and anemic lyrics, Mine Is Yours gives the impression of a band too eager to please to really take a stand musically.

Jack White's Third Man Records is something of a mad scientist's musical laboratory. The label headquarters in Nashville doubles as a combination record store/performance venue, and serves as ground zero for Mr. White's various insane projects (including but not limited to: Mechanical Monkeys that play unreleased music, inventing new types of vinyl, and shenanigans with one Conan O'Brien).
The most recent act to pass through Third Man's halls is The Cold War Kids, and they were certainly more powerful than a band of mechanical monkeys. The band graced the Nashville stage on December 12th, and played to a sold out crowd. The setlist touched on old favorites and showcased new songs, including a barreling rendition of "Skip The Charades" from their upcoming third album, 'Mine Is Yours' which is set for a January 25th release. Robyn's new online music promotion gives a taste of what interactive videos might become.
Have you heard of the Swedish pop singer Robyn? Mix Ace of Base with '80s Chicago house music. Now you have.
Her new project to promote her latest album is something altogether fresher, though. Based around "Killing Me," one of the singles off the album, it's not a video--but rather a Web site in 3-D. Created by Mary Fagot of Blip Boutique and Stopp Web, the animation has a kind a Tron-meets-"Flying Toasters"-screensaver-like appeal--stuff flying at you in 3-D!
Words pop up on screen, coinciding with the stuff that poor Robyn says "is killing me." But in the second half, the crowd takes over. If you include #killingme in a tweet, the Web site integrates it into the words zipping across the screen. Kinda cool, dead simple.
Makes you wonder: Where are all the interactive music videos?...

As we previously reported, Fiona Apple has finally written some new music this year, and though it's the 826 La non-profit that benefits from its sale, it is all of us who benefit from its dissemination. "So Sleepy" is a co-write with frequent collaborator Jon Brion (and lyrics by kids from the program), but The Punch Brothers (bluegrass/string band project of former Nickel Creek-er Chris Thile) also make a prominent showing, with delicate orchestral and roots-tinged arrangements, deftly sweeping Apple's throaty alto up for the chorus. She & Him, Edward Sharpe, comedy team Tim & Eric, Cold War Kids and others...
