Hulu has more stories to tell about an apathetic New York City dude who sees ghosts. The streaming video platform announced its original supernatural comedy series Deadbeat will return for a second season on April 20, 2015.
Deadbeat features Kevin (played by Tyler Labine), a medium who is competent at helping ghosts complete their unfinished business but utterly incapable of making his own life better. Season two will include special guest stars James Franco (who just signed on to star in Hulu’s upcoming adaptation of a Stephen King novel), Danny DeVito, Fred Armisen, Michael Ian Black, Zach Levi, Gilbert Gottfried, Finn Wittrock, and Jim Norton.
When Deadbeat debuted back in April 2014, we noted how Kevin’s lazy behavior and appearance appeals to the binge-watching, pot-smoking crowd. It seems appropriate, then, that Hulu has opted to release Deadbeat season two on 4/20, a day renowned for marijuana smoking. The teaser and key art...

A stoner and a slacker, Kevin “Pac” Pacalioglu has trouble paying rent, but on the plus side, he has the awesome ability to communicate with ghosts. Tyler Labine stars in Deadbeat, a Hulu original series that debuted last year with a stellar 10-episode season. Channeling his excellent horror comedy performances in Tucker & Dale vs. Evil and Reaper, Labine makes for a delightfully unconventional ghost whisperer who will be joined by an interesting lineup of guest stars in the sophomore season that's slated to premiere in April.
Deadline reports that James Franco, Danny DeVito, Fred Armisen, Michael Ian Black, Gilbert Gottfried, Jim Norton, Zachary Levi and Finn Wittrock play guest starring roles in Deadbeat’s second season. TVLine revealed in January that Levi plays the ghost of Abraham Lincoln in the ninth episode of season two, but it's uncertain at this time who the other guest actors play, though you can...

A stoner and a slacker, Kevin “Pac” Pacalioglu has trouble paying rent, yet has the awesome ability to communicate with ghosts. Tyler Labine stars in Deadbeat, a Hulu original series. With Lionsgate releasing Season 1 of the show on DVD (plus Digital) exclusively at Target this week, I had a chance to chat with Tyler about Deadbeat, the status of the Tucker & Dale vs. Evil sequel, and more.
Kevin “Pac” Pacalioglu has the impressive ability to see and talk with ghosts, and he’s also a stoner and a bit of a slacker. What attracted you to playing this unique take on a medium?
Tyler Labine: The role came to me as an offer through Dakota Pictures, who produced it. They sent me the first four scripts to give me an idea of what the show was going to be like. I think they had eight written. After reading the first four,...

Nearly a year ago, Netflix put out it’s first (of hopefully) many original horror titles with Hemlock Grove. While it was received with much polarity, Hulu is now gracing us with their own original genre title Deadbeat and it is a whole different animal. Deadbeat is a multi-camera horror comedy from Cody Heller and Brett Konner, two of the main writers of the FX dark comedy Wilfred. The ten episode series tells the story of Kevin Pacalioglu (or Pac), played by Tyler Labine (Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Reaper), a stoner medium who is consistently behind on his rent and best friends with his drug dealer, conveniently named Roofie (Brandon T. Jackson). The central plot of the show focuses on Pacalioglu discovering that his long time crush and rumored celebrity medium Camomile White (played by Cat Deeley) is a fraud and the fallout from the discovery.

Web series tend to fall into one of two categories: shows that try to copy the existing network standards and content that attempts to carve out its own identity online. Hulu's latest, "Deadbeat," falls heavily in line with the former, presenting itself as a network-friendly TV show hosted by a web site. With an intriguing premise -- a lazy, lovable medium earns just enough money solving clients' ghost-related issues to skate through life -- the half-hour comedy could have been pitched to one of the many cable networks looking for original content, but there are subtle touches a shade too lackadaisical for primetime, namely in its willingness to break conformity while remaining grounded deep within it. Though occasionally charming in its listless demeanor, "Deadbeat" has the pacing and tonal issues of a pilot -- which would be acceptable if they weren't scattered over a full season. Creators and head writers...

The final event of SXSW's brand new Episodic section did not disappoint, as Hulu's upcoming web series "Deadbeat" showed promise at its Tuesday afternoon screening. Starring Tyler Labine ("Tucker & Dale vs. Evil"), Brandon T. Jackson ("Tropic Thunder") and Cat Deely ("So You Think You Can Dance"), the half-hour comedy follows a stoner who helps New Yorkers solve their ghost-related issues. "I think we're almost getting to the point where the difference between online television and traditional television, that conversation is probably going to be dated in a couple years," said series co-creator Brett Konner ("Wilfred") at the post-screening Q&A. "I don't think people are going to distinguish them."The Vimeo Theater was at about half capacity for the screening, which consisted of only the show's first, half-hour episode. That most likely speaks to timing and competition more than anything else, but "Deadbeat" was nonetheless met with more silence from its onlookers than.

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

Former Reaper co-star Tyler Labine has signed on as the lead of another supernatural comedic series, Hulu‘s 10-episode original comedy Deadbeat. The project, produced by Lionsgate TV, centers on Kevin Pacalioglu (Labine), an unfiltered-yet-endearing, perennial underdog who constantly struggles with his weight and scrapes by as a medium-for-hire, using his only skill– the ability to communicate with ghosts. He helps New York’s ghosts settle their unfinished business. Written and executive produced by Brett Konner and Cody Heller (Wilfred), directed and executive produced by Troy Miller (Arrested Development) and also executive produced by Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner of Brad Pitt’s Plan B, Deadbeat has begun production in New York. Labine is with CAA, Pye, The Characters and attorney Jamie Mandelbaum. In what is its biggest content deal since it was taken off the auction block, Hulu has partnered with BBC Worldwide North America to bring some iconic TV shows to the service. The deal will bring some 144 titles to Hulu in the first year; many will be accessible via subscription service Hulu Plus. In all, there are more than 2,000 episodes with a few hundred available from this week. The non-exclusive arrangement follows the July announcement that Hulu owners Disney, 21st Century Fox, and Comcast would not sell the company and instead would supply $750M to accelerate its growth. In an effort to push back against competitors Netflix and Amazon, Hulu has partnered, for the first time, with Lionsgate to co-produce Deadbeat, a supernatural comedy from co-creators Cody Heller and Brett Konner. If this new series is anything like Reaper in terms of its quality, we might have a real contender on our hands. The supernatural genre can be a little uninteresting, no matter how crazy the plot twists are. But if you inject just the right amount of comedy to it, you can have something truly magnificent. Some of the best episodes of Supernatural have had a deep root in comedy.
That being said, there’s a lot of power backing Deadbeat, so I’m thinking there are others who feel there’s a great amount of potential in this series. According to THR, Deadbeat was given a 10-episode order and will be produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment.

Wilfred: 2×10 – Questions
Stars: Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Dorian Brown | Written by Cody Heller, Brett Konner | Directed by Randall Einhorn
**Spoilers Lie Beyond Here**
Midway through this week’s episode, the dream photographer in Ryan’s “vision quest” asks him a very important question, “Why so cryptic?” It’s a good question, honestly. We see some many things happen in the course of Ryan’s life that are cryptic, and he’s never looked inside himself and asked some basic questions. Why was his closet door boarded up at the end of last season’s finale, “Identity?” Or just a few weeks ago, why he felt an earthquake happen, and yet when he went outside, there was nary a sign of the quake in sight. We all get challenged like our Ryan Newman, and while we look deep down in ourselves to find the reasons why, it seems he never has … until now.
