Full disclosure. Many years ago, I worked at the Disney Channel at the time producers were casting a revival of the kids show “The Mickey Mouse Club.” I don’t know who did the selection of the cast members, but among the then-unknown pre-teens they chose were Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Keri Russell and a gawky 13 year-old Canadian kid named Ryan Gosling. What a cast! All have gone on to great success as adults, but Gosling especially chose his own path to become one of the most respected film actors working today.
In the course of such films as “Half Nelson,” “Blue Valentine, ” and “The Big Short,” Gosling has been nominated for two Academy Awards and four Screen Actors Guild Awards. He has also been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards, which includes a win for his performance in the Damien Chazelle musical “La La Land.”

Aliya salutes one of Hollywood's most suave and talented actors - the great Louis Jourdan...
Traditionally Hollywood works in boxes. It finds a box, and then it places an actor in it. The box of the French lover has been filled by quite a few stars over the years: Charles Boyer, Maurice Chevalier, Yves Montand, Pepe Le Pew, Alain Delon, and even Gerard Depardieu for one moment in the madly entertaining Green Card.
Louis Jourdan was the most classically handsome of these actors (yes, even more debonair than the skunk). He had a smile that the camera loved and a way of cocking his head and crossing his legs that exuded style. Most well known for Vincent Minnelli’s chocolate-box love affair with France, Gigi, he brought a sense of humour to the film that kept it fresh, but it was a retread of his standard role.

London, Feb 21: Ryan Gosling, whose Beckham-like face and breath-taking pecs made grown women take to the streets in protest when Bradley Cooper stole the Sexiest Man Alive title from him, has revealed he needed guidance on how to pull women in 'Crazy, Stupid, Love'.
The Canadian actor divulged that while preparing for his role as a serial seducer Jacob Palmer in the comedy, he did a lot of research on what women desire in men, by reading books and men's magazines.
"I don't want to disappoint you, but it's not really like the film," the Sun quoted him as saying.
"I just tried to follow all the rules that men's.

This insightful comedy about the hopelessness of love is every inch a ‘fashion film’, both in terms of narrative and thanks to costume designer Dayna Pink’s enviable parade of menswear trends and elegant suiting.
Crazy, Stupid, Love (directed by Glenn Ficara and John Requa) stars Steve Carell as Cal Weaver, a middle aged man who has forgotten how to be a man and Ryan Gosling as Jacob Palmer, a bar culture player who helps Cal regain his self respect. Clothes in the film are prioritised over the man. They denote what we wear reflects how we evolve. Or in the case of Cal during the very first scene, how we devolve and are generally the last to notice. As the opening cuts from one couple playing footsie to another,...

DVD Playhouse—November 2011
By Allen Gardner
Tree Of Life (20th Century Fox) Terrence Malick’s latest effort is both the best film of 2011 and the finest work of his (arguably) mixed, but often masterly canon. A series of vignettes, mostly set in 1950s Texas, capture the memory of a man (Sean Penn) in present-day New York who looks back on his life, and his parents’ (Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain) troubled marriage, when word of his younger brother’s suicide reaches him. Almost indescribable beyond that, except to say no other film in history so perfectly evokes the magic and mystery of the human memory, which both crystalizes (and sometimes idealizes) the past. Like Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, this is a challenging, polarizing work that you must let wash over you. If you go along for the ride, you’re in for a unique, rewarding cinematic experience. Also available on Blu-ray disc.

Crazy Stupid Love Blu-ray Warner Home Entertainment 2011/Rated PG-13 /Running Time 118 Mins List Price: $35.99 – Available November 1, 2011 Crazy Stupid Love is one of those romantic comedies that sneaks up on you delivering surprise after surprise and the method in which the film pulls them off is rather welcome. Steve Carell's had very few film that have enabled him to demonstrate his ability to juggle comedy with drama, playing characters in painful and very human situations, with the right injections of humor. It should come as no surprise that after the disaster that was Date Night, he's found something right up his alley, especially since he serves as one of the film's producers. Carrell is bumbling boring dad Cal, whose wife Emily (Julianne Moore) suddenly reveals an extramarital affair and wants a divorce. Faced to come to terms with his new single life, Cal's un-smoothness brings the comedy straight to life,...

At one point in the ensemble romantic comedy "Crazy, Stupid, Love.", Emma Stone's character has hooked up with Ryan Gosling's, and she asks the ridiculously ripped actor to take off his shirt. "Those are Photoshopped!" she gasps as she stares wide-eyed at his abs.
Gosling's body is not artificially enhanced, but her comment can be applied to the movie in general, because the polished stars exude an effortless chemistry that makes you less likely to notice the script blemishes and plot contrivances that would make this just another rom-com with a lesser cast.
Like in "Date Night," another hit starring Steve Carell, "Crazy, Stupid, Love." opens with Cal Weaver (Carell) having a dull dinner at an expensive restaurant with his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore). But whereas the couple in "Date Night" seemed complacent with their shared lack of excitement, Emily drops the bomb that she wants a divorce in lieu of dessert.

Oh, another rom-com I hear you yell? Oh, and it has the 40 year old virgin in it as well does it? Well it must be a rom-com then? I think it’s a little bit disingenuous to label Crazy, Stupid, Love as a stereotypical rom-com. And whys that I hear you ask? Because it is so much more than your standard, brain dead, join the dots romantic comedy. Telling the story of Cal Weaver (Steve Carrell) and his marriage, which has fallen apart due to a bit of extra curricular physical activity on his wife's (Julianne Moore) behalf. Cal finds himself meeting Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling) who, shall we say is the ultimate playa, and Palmer takes Cal under his wing. From there, Palmer teaches Cal the tricks of the trade as it were. A wardrobe change or ten later, coupled with a new haircut, Cal is starting to pull in the ladies quite successfully,...

Ryan Gosling is the hottest property in Hollywood right now. This week alone he’s in cinemas with this quirky post-modern rom-com and Nicholas Winding Refn’s arthouse actioner ‘Drive’. Luckily in this outing he has a solid ensemble cast to take some of the weight from his broad, muscular shoulders (sorry, man crush kicking in).
The story centres on Cal Weaver (Steve Carell). A 40-something man with a steady job, a happy family and a stable world. Of course, in cinema such worlds don’t last long.
Within 10 minutes his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), has confessed to an extramarital affair and demanded a divorce. With his world exploding around him, Cal consigns himself to a small bachelor pad and a lonely new life. That is, until he bumps into womaniser extraordinaire Jacob Palmer (Gosling) in a bar.
The man has a system, and boy does it work.

A report published this week suggests films showing smoking should automatically be classified 18
The big story
This week a report published by the medical journal Thorax recommended that all films including a scene in which a character smokes should automatically be classified as 18, regardless of any other content.
The report, produced by the UK Centre for Tobacco Contol Studies, was compiled from a survey of 5,000 teenagers who were asked if they had seen 50 films randomly selected from 366 box-office hits between 2001 and 2005. When the viewing preferences of the adolescents were compared to their smoking habits it was found that those exposed to puff-heavy plotlines were 73% more likely to have tried a cigarette and nearly 50% more likely to take up smoking in the longer term.
"More than half the films shown in the UK that contain smoking are rated 15 or below, so children and young teenagers are clearly exposed," said Dr Andrea...

Critics single out memorable performances by Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell in this 'crazy smart film.'

Although the summer season is packed with big, noisy, CGI-enhanced blockbusters, studio executives are wise to the fact that not everyone wants to see flashy, action-heavy films, so they smartly offer up counter-programming in the form of romantic comedies. This week's star-studded "Crazy, Stupid, Love." is a perfect example, underscored by its 74 percent "fresh" rating at Rotten Tomatoes.
The film revolves around Cal Weaver (Steve Carell), whose wife (Julianne Moore) has recently announced her infidelity (the "other man" is played by Kevin Bacon) and requested a divorce. Cal takes his sorrows to a singles' bar, where he's adopted by local ladies' man Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling). Jacob educates Cal in the new ways of wooing the ladies, and although Cal picks up some decent skills,...

Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell in Crazy, Stupid, Love
Photo: Warner Bros. Is it a comedy? A romance? A drama? I'd call Crazy, Stupid, Love a mixture of all three, which isn't a bad thing, but the confused nature of the narrative shows directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (I Love You Phillip Morris) were just as indecisive as the title.
As a comedy there is a lot to laugh about. As a drama there are some solid performances. As a romance... eh, it's not really all that romantic, though the Dirty Dancing moment is pretty great. And, as a movie, it's a blurred mixture of one thing, then another, that ultimately stumbles in the third act en route to running about 20 minutes too long.
I Crazy, Stupid, Love, Steve Carell plays Cal Weaver, a man that doesn't realize he's become a bit of a bore. His marriage has become...

Watching a smart romantic comedy like .Crazy, Stupid, Love. in a summer filled with fighting giant robots, magical boy wizards, and avenging superheroes is like drinking a tall, cool glass of lemonade during sweltering heat.
Written by Dan Fogelman, the guy who gave us the Disney/Pixar .Cars. movies, and directed by Glen Ficarra and John Requa (.Bad Santa,. .I Love You Phillip Morris.), .Crazy, Stupid, Love. is witty, charming, and oddly uplifting. You will be soul-searching long after the movie is finished. .Crazy, Stupid, Love. is this year.s .Little Miss Sunshine..
The film is decidedly farcical in nature and the talented cast is more than game to dish out every absurd and preposterous narrative arc to full effect. There.s an important major plot twist near the end and if you have seen the movie already please do not spoil it by your earnest revelation.

I can indeed confirm that this week’s romantic/comedy/drama Crazy, Stupid, Love. lives up to all the buzz it has garnered. It has strong characters, with a well-toned script by Dan Fogelman. Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who helmed the severely underseen I Love You Phillip Morris and scripted Bad Santa, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, John Carroll Lynch, Marisa Tomei, Kevin Bacon, Jonah Bobo, Analeigh Tipton, and Josh Groban. In anticipation of release, Warner Bros. has released three new short trailer, one for each element in the title. They actually feature quite a bit of new footage. Check them out below via Apple.

Hello class! It’s your nerd with the word Melissa here, with a very special lesson plan. So, take a seat while I break it down for you.
Let’s face it… dating sucks! Sure, when we meet that special someone who makes our knees weak, and sends our caged stomach insects (butterflies, duh!) into a frenzy, it can be incredible…
But add the amount of times that you’ve had your heart broken by someone who once made you giggly, multiply that with the number of cheesy pick-up lines that you’ve had to encounter, and then factor in all of the times that you have had to endure a friends tales of epic failure in the romance department and that equals stupid! If you had a hard time following my equation, don’t worry. You can enter to win tickets to an advanced screening of Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Back in April, we got a look at Steve Carell's first post-'Office' project when the trailer for 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' debuted. There was nothing groundbreaking about it -- it looked like your typical romantic comedy, and we still stand by that. But the studio just released the official poster for the film, and it's pretty hard not to giggle at the goofy/dumbfounded look on Steve Carell's face as he stares down Marisa Tomei.
The movie follows Cal Weaver (Carell) who finds out that his wife Emily (Julianne Moore) has been cheating on him, so he elicits the help of ladies man Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling) to help teach him some tips for picking up girls.
