There’s an abundance of treats offered by director Matthew Warchus’ staging of A Christmas Carol – like Andrea Martin dressed as a Victorian caroler mingling with the audience at Broadway Lyceum Theatre, handing out Clementines and cookies before curtain – but perhaps the best is the revelation that the Dickens chestnut can still inspire such a vibrant, compassionate and timely telling.
Adapted by playwright Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), and starring Campbell Scott as Scrooge, Martin and Lachanze as the Ghosts of Christmas Past and Present, respectively, this Carol (with different casts) has become something of a holiday tradition at London’s Old Vic. Andrea Martin and Lachanze will join the previously announced Campbell Scott in this holiday season’s Broadway production of A Christmas Carol, an adaptation of the Dickens classic by playwright Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and director Matthew Warchus (Matilda The Musical).
Martin will play the Ghost of Christmas Past, while Lachanze will portray the Ghost of Christmas Present (and pull double duty as Mrs. Fezziwig).
Complete casting for the production was announced today. A Christmas Carol begins previews at the Lyceum Theatre on Thursday, Nov. 7, with opening night set for Wednesday, Nov. 20. The strictly limited engagement runs through Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020.
The holiday show will mark Martin’s first Broadway appearance since she was forced to pull out of Taylor Mac’s Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus this past march following a home accident that left her with four broken ribs.
In addition to Martin, Lachanze and Scott (who plays Scrooge), the production will feature Erica Dorfler as Mrs. Cratchit; Dashiell Eaves (A Behanding in Spokane) as Bob Cratchit; Hannah Elless as Jess; Brandon Gill (Holler if Ya Hear Me) as Fred; Evan Harrington as Fezziwig; Chris Hoch as Father/Marley; Sarah Hunt (The Last Ship) as Belle; Matthew Labanca as Nicholas; Alex Nee (Once) as Ferdy; Dan Piering, in his Broadway debut, as Young Ebenezer/George; and Rachel Prather (The Band’s Visit) as Little Fan. Off Broadway Korean-pop musical “Kpop” topped the nominations for the 2018 Lucille Lortel Awards, snagging nine nominations for the annual awards for Off Broadway fare.
“Kpop,” which Ars Nova (“Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812”) produced in association with Ma-Yi Theater Company and Woodshed Collective, led a list of musical nominees that also included “Bella: An American Tall Tale” (six nominations) and “The Lucky Ones” (five.) The top-nominated play was “Mary Jane” (six nominations), the Amy Herzog play that premiered at New York Theatre Workshop in a staging that starred Carrie Coon (who’s nominated for an acting award).
Special awards will be given to Eve Ensler, for the lifetime achievement award; Michael Friedman, the late composer who will be inducted into the Lortel’s Playwrights’ Sidewalk; and Wp Theater, for body of work.
