The BBC has pulled a University Challenge Christmas special episode from its festive schedule following complaints by two disabled contestants.
According to BBC News, one blind and one neurodivergent contestant took part in the episode – which features teams of distinguished alumni who compete on behalf of their former universities – but it won’t air following grievances over a lack of audio description and subtitles. The contestants have not been named.
One of the contestants was quoted by BBC News saying the experience was “distressing” and the other “overwhelming and overstimulating.” The first said they were told one minute before the show that there would be no audio description and “your captain will instead have to explain everything,” according to the BBC News article, while the second claimed a request for subtitles made in advance was turned down.

Is Richard Osman’s House of Games the perfect teatime quiz show? It’s certainly in contention. Silly, funny and warm, it makes very good company. The armchairs exude a sense of convivial relaxation. There are no flashing-lights podiums or tense burden of cash prizes, making it a wholly gentler experience than, say, The Chase. It keeps the same four contestants all week long, meaning that the kind of rapport other quiz shows try to manufacture in rapid-fire Q&As with the host can naturally develop. The personalities and relationships are almost as important as the rounds and questions, and it’s all done with a sense of humour – from the deliberately naff 1970s gameshow-style fondue sets and carriage clock prizes, to the enjoyable silliness behind almost every round.
To celebrate the new series airing now on weekdays at 6pm on BBC Two, here are a few fun titbits about the show.

As the world continues to discuss the Succession series finale, Brian Cox is sharing heartfelt thoughts about his time playing Logan Roy for HBO’s Emmy-winning drama.
The actor, who debuted as the Roy patriarch in the premiere episode that aired in June 2018, took to his Instagram Stories on Monday to express his appreciation for the show’s cast and crew. After four seasons, Succession signed off the evening prior with no shortage of memorable moments.
“We have now come to the end,” Cox wrote. “And what has been, in my career, certainly the greatest work experience ever. The harmony between cast and crew was truly amazing. It was on [its] way to become a great series but the Love and commitment from crew to cast and writers, made it memorable.”
He continued, “I would like to thank all of us in the making and creating of this show from the very bottom of my heart.

Brian Cox has shared his thoughts on the decision to kill off his Succession character Logan Roy in the third episode of the currently airing fourth season, admitting that he thinks it came “too early.” “[Succession creator Jesse Armstrong] decided to make Logan die, I think ultimately too early,” Cox said in an interview with Amol Rajan Interviews (per Deadline), which is set to air on BBC2 in the U.K. on Thursday (May 25) night. “I mean, he’d made him die in the third episode… It was an odd feeling.” The Emmy-winning actor said he initially looked at it “wrongly, as a form of rejection,” but that he “was fine with it ultimately” even if he did “feel a bit rejected.” “I felt a little bit, ‘Oh, all the work I’ve done. And finally I’m going to end up as a New Yorker on a carpet of a plane’,” he added.

Brian Cox said on Wednesday that he felt “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong killed off the HBO show’s fearsome patriarch Logan Roy “too early.”
Logan’s death, while anticipated, came in the third episode of the HBO drama’s fourth and final season — much earlier than many viewers expected.
In a BBC Two interview with Amol Rajan, Cox said, “I was fine with it, ultimately, but I did feel a little bit rejected. You know, I felt a little bit like all the work I’ve done [is being overlooked] and finally I’m going to, you know, end up as an ear on a carpet of a plane.”
It was “ultimately too early” Cox said of his character’s demise, which he would have preferred to happen in the fifth or sixth episode. Despite his shortened run on the season, HBO will still submit him as Lead Actor at the upcoming Emmy Awards.

The series finale of Succession is just a few days away. The story of the Roy dynasty will conclude, but that story came to an end for one character several weeks ago. While speaking with BBC’s Amol Rajan (via Deadline), Brian Cox commented on the surprise death of his character Logan Roy near the beginning of the final season of Succession.
Brian Cox feels as though Logan’s death was “ultimately too early,” and that it might have been more appropriate for that departure to happen later in the season. “I was fine with it ultimately, but I did feel a little bit rejected,” Cox said. “You know, I felt a little bit like all the work I’ve done and finally I’m going to, you know, end up as an ear on a carpet of a plane.”

Succession star Brian Cox has given his take on the monumental decision to kill off his patriarch character Logan Roy in the third episode of this year’s final season.
It was “ultimately too early,” Cox will tell tonight’s Amol Rajan Interviews, with the star saying it would have been more appropriate for his iconic character to die in the fifth or sixth episode of HBO’s smash. The interview will air tonight on BBC Two.

Cox is giving one of his first big interviews since his character’s shock death, which surprised Succession fans all over the world.

Brian Cox says the death of the Roy family patriarch during the final season of Succession came too soon.
The Emmy-nominated actor shared his view on the show’s choice to deliver Logan Roy’s long-awaited death during the third episode of season four of the hit HBO show while speaking to BBC News’ Amol Rajan ahead of Succession’s finale.
While Cox acquiesces that Logan’s death happened in “a pretty brilliant way,” he said he saw it “wrongly” as a form of rejection. He also suggested that it would have made more sense to do it later in the season, during either the fifth or sixth episode.

Exclusive: The BBC has apologized after broadcasting a documentary in which presenter Amol Rajan is filmed in the back of a taxi not wearing a seatbelt.
The documentary, How to Crack the Class Ceiling, was broadcast in December last year and, around 11 minutes in, features Rajan delivering a piece to camera from the back of a cab.
The presenter can be clearly seen not wearing a seatbelt, which is against the law in the UK when the safety device is available.
The BBC said: “In the course of making this programme the presenter was filmed travelling by cab without using a seatbelt. This was a mistake for which we apologise.”
Rajan appears to be traveling through London in the clip. The Metropolitan Police website states that people can be fined up to £500 ($606) for not wearing a seatbelt.
The police force has been contacted for comment. Rajan has also been contacted for comment.

Netflix’s Harry & Meghan doc series is officially here and debate is already raging over whether the Royal Family were shown the series prior to launch, and how or if they will respond.
The family claim they were not asked for comment on the hotly-anticipated six-parter, BBC Royal Correspondent Jonny Dymond told the BBC’s Today this morning, but the first episode, which dropped at 8 a.m. GMT (12 a.m. Pst), starts with the disclaimer: “Members of the Royal Family declined to comment on the content within this series.”
It adds: “This is a first-hand account of Harry and Meghan’s story told with never before seen personal archive. All interviews were completed by August 2022.”
Rumors were swirling this week over whether the Royal Family had seen the show following the release of two trailers, in which Harry spoke of “the pain and suffering of women” marrying into the Royal...

“Monty Python” star John Cleese is set to host a regular show on right-wing news channel Gb News next year.
The 82-year-old actor revealed his new project on BBC Radio 4’s popular “Today” program on Monday morning. “I was approached and I didn’t know who they were,” said Cleese of Gb News, which set up shop in Britain in 2021. “I don’t know much about modern television because I’ve pretty much given up on it — I mean, English television. Then, I met one or two of the people concerned and had a dinner with them and I liked them very much.
“What they said was, ‘People say it’s a right-wing channel, but it’s a free speech channel,’” explained Cleese, who is working on the show with political satirist and comedian Andrew Doyle.

U.K. TV giant ITV said the fact that Netflix and Disney+ are preparing advertising tiers could expand the broader ad market and “is kind of about how powerful TV is,” CEO Carolyn McCall said on Tuesday in London. “We will have to monitor very carefully,” she added though.
Speaking at the Royal Television Society (Rts) London Convention 2022, the exec noted that “they could be complementary to our audience.” So, ITV will “deliver a mass audience,” while Netflix could be more of an “add-on” for marketers to their key TV ad buys when looking for more younger audiences.
McCall discussed ITV’s commercial and business challenges, competition from global streaming giants and the upcoming launch of streamer Itvx during an on-stage conversation with BBC journalist Amol Rajan.

ITV chief executive Carolyn McCall defended the network’s morning show anchors Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby over allegations that they skipped a five-mile long queue to see Queen Elizabeth II lying in state two weeks ago.
Ever since Schofield and Willoughby, who host “This Morning” were seen on the live-feed of the lying-in-state, walking through Westminster Hall via the VIP line, the duo have been the subject of much criticism, particularly on social media. A petition titled ‘Axe Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby from TV’ has amassed over 75,000 signatures.
Speaking at the Royal Television Society (Rts) annual convention in London on Tuesday afternoon, McCall defended Schofield and Willoughby and said that ITV had even contacted Domino’s Pizza U.K. to complain about a light-hearted tweet the pizza company had posted poking fun at the controversy.
“What exactly did Holly and Phil do wrong?” asked BBC journalist Amol Rajan, who was interviewing McCall on stage.

The BBC will get a bigger percentage of its growing revenue from its U.K. commercial business in the future, but the license fee will remain the biggest source of income, Tim Davie, director general of the U.K. public broadcaster, told a TV industry event in London on Tuesday.
He also shared that he and his team would continue to look at possibly closing down some BBC services over time amid questions over future funding. He hinted that foreign-language news services could be cut if the government doesn’t help with increased financing, saying that the BBC World Service is a trusted news service, but key questions will be who will fund it in the future, what offers to continue and how to distribute them.

BBC director general Tim Davie robustly defended the corporation’s license fee model at the Royal Television Society (Rts) convention on Tuesday afternoon, saying “I think the license fee is there to beat.”
The license fee is a mandatory fee every household that watches live television on any service or network must pay annually. It is currently £159 (171) per year.
“There are loads of funding solutions you could get,” Davie said after being grilled by BBC journalist Amol Rajan. “My view is if I can’t, as editor-in-chief, act independently and impartially, then the BBC is over. Final thing is, I think you cannot separate funding model from editorial, intent and delivery.”
Davie also argue that the model was sustainable. “We can deliver the vast majority of households paying for a licence fee because they get good value from it,” he said.

The BBC has this weekend removed a lesson on its educational platform BBC Bitesize following protests that it promoted the views of an “extreme anti-abortion group.”
Health experts had complained that the religious studies revision guide listed arguments against abortion, included the term “pro-life” rather than “anti-abortion” and featured a group campaigning for the banning of abortion in Britain, which has a record of promoting misinformation about pain felt by foetuses and a procedure known as “abortion reversal.”
The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (Spuc) recently celebrated the decision by the US Supreme Court to overturn Roe v Wade, bringing to an end the constitutional right to abortion of American women.
The group was described on the BBC’s platform as a “pro-life” charity that “advocates for the rights of unborn children,” promotes “the sanctity of human life” and “supports individuals and families through pregnancy.” No pro-choice organisations were mentioned.

The BBC has been pulled into the controversy following the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade, after one of its news presenters used a controversial term on air.
Today presenter Amol Rajan used the term “pro-life” twice on air to describe anti-abortion campaigners.
During the flagship BBC radio news programme, Rajan eschewed the BBC News style guide which advises journalists to use the term “anti-abortion rather than pro-life” in a discussion about the ruling’s repercussions, and used the latter description in a discussion with the BBC’s North America editor Sarah Smith:
“As you say, Sarah, this is not the end but the end of the beginning. Because for the pro-life groups, for the pro-life coalition, who have been campaigning for this for many, many years, since Roe v Wade actually, they’re very ambitious, aren’t they, there’s a lot more that they want to achieve.
