Ariyon Bakare had his carry-on luggage packed and ready to travel from his London home to Prague where the second season of Amazon Prime TV show “Carnival Row” is filming. Then, the actor, who plays Darius, received the call that filming had abruptly stopped because of Covid-19. “I have no idea when we will start again,” says Bakare.
Elsewhere, writer-director and “Riot Club” actor Aki Omoshaybi was excited his directorial debut, “Real,” which had its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival was gearing up for release in British cinemas.
“We were going to release it in November last year, but because that’s a busy time for awards movies, we postponed it to April. We were booking with programmers and putting money into advertising,” he says.
Now, that cinema release — which was essential to streaming and ancillary deals — doesn’t look promising.

Close, directed by Vicky Jewson, is one of latest slug action thrillers from Netflix. Jewson’s film stars Noomi Rapace as counter-terrorism expert Sam who, after a brutal job, decides to scale back and begin working as a bodyguard for young naive heiress Zoe played by Sophie Nélisse. Things go sideways after an attempted kidnapping and the two go on the run in a foreign country with no allies, trying to survive.
Close is about as generic and predictable as any direct-to-video that you’ll come across in your local supermarket bargain bin. Echoing that of extravagant low-budget and low-brow ’90s action films, the narrative on offer is still somehow saturated to...

"Let's get one thing straight - I no longer work for you. From now on, you do as I say." Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for a gritty action film titled Close, which will be premiering on Netflix in just a few weeks. Described as an "adrenaline-pumping action thriller", written and directed by Vicky Jewson, the film is about a bodyguard assigned to protect a young woman who is handed the keys to her father's business. When things go wrong and they end up kidnapped, they both must learn to fight back and escape in order to make it home alive. Noomi Rapace stars as Sam, with a cast including Sophie Nélisse, Indira Varma, Eoin Macken, Charley Palmer Rothwell, Akin Gazi, Huw Parmenter, and George Georgiou. This looks like an intense action flick, but also looks cliche with all the usual tropes. Still might be worth a watch.

"This is a story about the path I chose..." Studiocanal UK has released a new full-length official trailer for the film Yardie, the feature directorial debut of actor Idris Elba. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and went on to play at the Berlin Film Festival as well. The first teaser trailer dropped earlier this year, but this full trailer gives us a better look. Elba's Yardie, based on the novel by Victor Headley, is about a young Jamaican boy who moves to London in the 80s and gets involved in gang war in Hackney. Aml Ameen stars as D, and the full cast includes Everaldo Creary, Stephen Graham, Mark Rhino Smith, Akin Gazi, Fraser James, Deepak Anand, Naomi Ackie, and Shantol Jackson. The film looks better than it is, unfortunately, since the reviews from the festivals haven't been great. I'm glad Idris Elba is getting into directing to tell stories like this,...

"It's time to let go... Choose the right path, son." Get your first look at the directorial debut of English actor Idris Elba, titled Yardie. This film premiered at both the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals, and should hit theaters later this year, even though there still isn't any news on a Us distribution deal. Elba's Yardie, based on the novel by Victor Headley, is about a young Jamaican boy who moves to London in the 80s and gets involved in gang war in Hackney. Aml Ameen stars as D, and the cast includes Everaldo Creary, Stephen Graham, Mark Rhino Smith, Akin Gazi, Fraser James, Deepak Anand, Naomi Ackie, and Shantol Jackson. I wish I could say this is a great film and everyone should watch it when it comes out, but I just saw it at the Berlin Film Festival, and it's no good. It has some seriously bad...

The Cut
Director: Fatih Akin
Writer: Fatih Akin
Producers: Fatih Akin, Karl Baumgartner, Reinhard Brundig, Fabienne Vonier
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Tahar Rahim, George Georgiou, Akin Gazi
It’s when he worked within his working trilogy that Fatih Akin has provided us with his deepest, thematically most daring material to date. With the promise of a Tahar Rahim embodying the spirit of a muted, Sergio Leone character type, there are more than enough reasons to believe that The Cut will make us forget about his messy, 2009 comedy Soul Kitchen.
Gist: Final installment in his Love, Death and the Devil trilogy, will focus on the devil — that is, the evil inherent in mankind.
Release Date: Following in the shoes of The Edge of Heaven, this could find itself in the Main Comp at the Cannes Film Festival.

Black Gold is in UK cinemas now. We loved the movie and you can see our review of it here. The movie has a fabulous cast and our friend James Kleinmann got to chat with many of them including Mark Strong, Antonio Banderas and Tahar Rahim in these great interviews for the movie. He also got to chat with Director Jean-Jacques Annaud who you’ll know from previous works such as Enemy at the Gates, and Seven Years in Tibet.
During the interviews, we get to hear from some of the fabulous male side of the cast who talk about what first attracted them to the movie, some of the challenges they had to overcome and what it was like filming a movie based on such a topical subject. They also all talk about the traditional way in which the movie was shot and working with such a fabulous cast.

In return and according to the tribal customs of the time, Nesib will .adopt.- or take hostage- Amar.s two boys Saleeh (Akin Gazi) and Auda (Tahar Rahim); a guarantee that neither man can invade the other. Years later, Saleeh and Auda have grown into young men.

Here’s the new UK poster for Black Gold which stars Tahar Rahim, Mark Strong, Antonio Banderas, Riz Ahmed, Freida Pinto and is directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. Black Gold tells the tale of two fierce Arabian leaders during the early days of the oil boom in Middle East. If you missed our review from the Doha Film Festival last year, have a read here. Suffice it to say that we liked it a lot.

English actor known for lightweight parts plays dual role as dictator's heir and his body double in The Devil's Double
You may think of Dominic Cooper as, to use his own phrase, someone usually seen "prancing around in a frock and spandex".
But the actor known for lighthearted parts in Mamma Mia! and Tamara Drewe – as well as his breakthrough role in The History Boys – has now turned his hand to something rather different.
In his latest film, he plays both Saddam Hussein's murderous son Uday and his appallingly treated body double, Latif Yahia. The often bloody, violent film provoked a number of walkouts at its premiere at the Berlin film festival. But what is seen on screen only hints at the true extent of the stomach-churning horrors committed by Uday, according to Latif.
The film shows Uday's unspeakable appetites – for picking up and debauching schoolgirls, and for raping...
