Netflix has a strong Emmy hand to play this TV awards season, positioning the seventh season of its flagship anthology series “Black Mirror” for a major awards run — and this time, the dystopian drama might be among its most formidable contenders yet.
Confirmed exclusively to Variety, the streamer is submitting three standout performances for lead acting honors in the limited or anthology series or TV movie categories: Paul Giamatti for the melancholic and moving “Eulogy,” and Chris O’Dowd and Rashida Jones for their resonant turns in the sociopolitical two-hander “Common People.” It’s a bold push that signals high hopes for a season already being hailed as a return to form — and possibly the series’ strongest outing since its Emmy-winning heyday.
Giamatti’s performance as Phillip, a solitary man navigating grief through digital means in “Eulogy,” has generated both tears and buzz. The 46-minute episode explores the ethics of AI-driven memorials,...

That’s a question on the minds of many fans these days, thanks to a mysterious new photo making the rounds on social media.

Much of the Emmy conversation around Adolescence's acting chances has centered around Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper, as they play the two key characters in the harrowing project. However, Gold Derby is now predicting that five total performers will receive nominations this year.
The four-episode crime drama is created and written by Graham and Jack Thorne, and stars Graham as Eddie Miller, the father of Cooper's 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is arrested for allegedly stabbing a classmate to death. Each episode is directed by Philip Barantini and filmed in a single take as viewers learn more about Jamie's crime from the viewpoints of the police, his psychiatrist, and his family.
Also expected to nab Emmy nominations for the cast are Ashley Walters as Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe, Erin Doherty as child psychologist Briony Ariston, and Christine Tremarco as Jamie's mother and Eddie's wife, Manda Miller. Cooper and Doherty are...

[This story contains spoilers from the Black Mirror season seven sequel “USS Callister: Into Infinity.”]
Making Black Mirror‘s first-ever sequel was a wild ride. Jimmi Simpson, one of almost all of the returning actors who came back for the season seven episode, likens it to “an artistic battalion.”
“It was chaotic, but everybody was up for it,” he says of returning to play his character, Walton, who is now running tech company Infinity in “USS Callister: Into Infinity” after the death of former CEO Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons) in the first film. The 90-minute sequel — which was at first set to be a series — reunited Simpson with co-star Cristin Milioti and gave him the chance to act opposite her not only in the real world but also as their in-game characters (who Simpson describes as his Caveman Walton and Spaceman Walton) as they voyage on another adventure to save themselves inside the immersive game.

Netflix is no longer reporting number of subscribers on a quarterly basis. But it’s still motoring with a hot growth engine, delivering financial results for the first quarter of 2025 that topped Wall Street expectations.
The industry-leading subscription streamer reported Q1 revenue of $10.54 billion, up 12.5%, and earnings per share of $6.61 (compared with $5.28 a year prior). Operating margin was 31.7%, up from 28.1% in Q1 of 2024. It’s the first quarter Netflix will stop disclosing subscriber counts, a longtime metric investors have used to gauge its growth, as the company wants to focus the narrative on financials and user engagement.
On average, Wall Street analysts expected $10.51 billion in revenue and earnings of $5.66 per share, according to Lseg Data & Analytics.

Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror is one of the most loved contemporary series. Set in the near future, the techno-thriller anthology introduces a different technological marvel in each episode, and explores profound philosophical questions and themes with technology as the centre. One of its most celebrated episodes is the season 4 episode ‘USS Callister.’
A parody of and a tribute to Star Trek, the USS Callister sees an in-universe, multiplayer, role-playing game called Infinity, created by the episode’s central character, Robert Daly, played by Jesse Plemons, who uses the VR game to take revenge on his co-workers. The makers of the episode also ideated a spin-off series on the same.

Black Mirror has been one of Netflix's major successes since it first shattered screens in 2011. Fourteen years and seven seasons later, the British anthology series still finds new ways to shock and awe its audience and bring them all the feels.
A brief introduction: I love science fiction. I devoured Isaac Asimov's robot stories as a kid. When the anthology The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume One 1929-1964 was first published in 1970, I was enthralled. Television science fiction wasn't quite as good, but it wasn't bad, either. Star Trek is often considered the gold standard of Sf on TV, but nothing compares to The Twilight Zone.
There were science fiction shows before The Twilight Zone, and we've seen more than a few since. It's been rebooted several times, but not even the amazing Jordan Peele matched the original series for its overall quality and (admittedly occasional) sheer brilliance.

Black Mirror has been a hit since its 2011 release, exploring various genres and possibilities beyond day-to-day life. The series has just returned with Season 7.
Black Mirror comes from Charlie Brooker, who brought the series back to its roots in Season 7 after a short detour with Season 6. The series is contemporaneous, criticizing many current themes, including capitalism, technology, and the healthcare industry, but it also brings a sequel to the beloved USS Callister. Black Mirror failed to debut at the top of the charts and had a weaker debut than Season 6, per Tudum.
Black Mirror premiered on Apr. 10 on Netflix, and had two days to make an impression for the week between Apr. 7 and 13. In its short time, the series debuted in fourth place with 7.1 million views and 43.7 million hours viewed. Black Mirror Season 7 debuted in the Top 10 in 71 countries in its first week, including the U.S.

"Black Mirror" season 7 recently arrived on Netflix, and it brought with it another batch of twisted sci-fi tales. Perhaps most important of all, it finally delivered a sequel to the fan-favorite episode "USS Callister" from season 4, something many viewers have waited a long time to see. That's certainly good news. But at one time, there was talk of doing an entire spin-off series based on that episode. So, what happened? We finally have an answer.
Talk of a "USS Callister" spin-off series first emerged in 2018, with the episode's director, Toby Haynes, explaining that he'd had conversations about it. However, there have been few updates since then. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Haynes, who returned to direct the season 7 sequel episode, "USS Callister: Into Infinity," offered some background on how the spin-off started to come together behind the scenes before it ultimately fell apart:

Cristin Milioti has had a busy year. Just two weeks after wrapping her role as Sofia Falcone in The Penguin, she flew to London to film the new Black Mirror movie, USS Callister: Into Infinity. It was a fast switch between two very different but very dark characters.
“I was in like a little bit of a fugue state when I got there,” Milioti said with a laugh about how quickly she moved from one set to the next. “Two weeks was a quick turnaround!”
Playing Sofia Falcone, a crime boss in the Batman spinoff series The Penguin, was a big deal for Milioti. Even though she has now moved on to Black Mirror, fans keep asking if she will return for season two of The Penguin.
“I get asked a lot and my answer is always the same — but it is the most genuine answer, which is that I would love nothing more,...

While you wait for Season 7 ofBlack Mirror, which premieres on Netflix April 10, catch a glimpse at the compelling stories ahead in these first-look photos and episode synopses.
Creator, writer, and showrunner Charlie Brooker previously teased what to expect, telling Tudum that the upcoming season was “a little bit Og Black Mirror.” New episodes are “back to basics in many ways,” he added. “They’re all sci-fi stories, but there’s definitely some horrifying things that occur, but maybe not in an overt horror movie way. There’s definitely some disturbing content in it.”
The forthcoming installment will feature a sequel to the Season 4 opener “USS Callister,” with Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson, and Billy Magnussen returning to the mix. But they’re not the only familiar faces set to reappear this season.

[This story contains spoilers from Black Mirror season seven sequel “USS Callister: Into Infinity.”]
Cristin Milioti had just finished playing Sofia Falcone in The Penguin when she teleported back to the USS Callister spaceship for the Black Mirror sequel, “USS Callister: Into Infinity.”
The new season seven episode — which runs 90 minutes — was conceived by Netflix series creator-writer Charlie Brooker years ago. After first taking format as a spinoff series, the follow-up eventually became the film that is now streaming when plans changed amid the Hollywood strikes in 2023. Director Toby Haynes and nearly all of the cast returned for the sequel, which follows Milioti’s character, Nanette Cole, both in real life and inside Infinity, the immersive video game where she and her crew were unknowingly digitally cloned by the first episode’s villain Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons), the CEO of Infinity.
Of course, the world of her Batman super-villain and her USS Callister hero are quite different.

The seventh season of the anthology series Black Mirror dropped onto the Netflix streaming service earlier this month – and among its six episodes, for the first time in Black Mirror history, there was a sequel! The season 7 episode USS Callister: Into Infinity is a follow-up to the popular season 4 episode USS Callister, and Toby Haynes, who directed both of the USS Callister episodes, has revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he’s hoping to make this a trilogy!
Created and written by Charlie Brooker, Black Mirror is an anthology series that taps into our collective unease with the modern world, with each stand-alone episode a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia leading to an unforgettable – and sometimes unsettling – conclusion. ‘Black Mirror’ Sequel “USS Callister: Into Infinity” Was Initially a Series. Now It May Be a Trilogy

[This story contains spoilers from Black Mirror season seven sequel “USS Callister: Into Infinity.”]
After the first “USS Callister” released with the fourth season of Black Mirror in late 2017, director Toby Haynes told creator Charlie Brooker they had just made the best pilot for a space series. Brooker was initially hesitant to discuss spinoff potential for the extended 90-minute saga (which went on to win four Emmys), but it wasn’t long before the future of “Callister” began to look bright.
“They first talked to me about doing a season of ‘Callister’ back when I was doing Andor,” Haynes tells The Hollywood Reporter of the yearslong journey to bring “Callister” back to Netflix screens. Brooker initially shared with Haynes ideas for a “Callister” series, but after the Hollywood strikes in 2023 derailed production plans, Brooker and executive producer Jessica Rhoades quite literally aligned the planets of their star-studded ensemble and tranformed their follow-up into another 90-minute feature,...

Back in 2022, audiences took a journey through the dark, twisted, and hopeless streets of a reimagined Gotham City. While there are always big expectations behind any project involving the Caped Crusader, few could've imagined just how much of a masterpiece Matt Reeves' The Batman would be. Robert Pattinson's portrayal of the character was simply spot on, the narrative was filled with many twists and turns impossible to predict, and The Riddler was a great antagonist, even when he's a very difficult villain to adapt on the big screen. To say anticipation was at an all-time high to see more of these characters would be an understatement. Thankfully, fans got exactly what they wanted.
The Penguin HBO miniseries picked things up right where the movie left off. Lauren LeFranc crafted a dark and violent project that perfectly shines the spotlight on Cristin Milioti's Sofia Falcone and Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot.

Netflix’s new medical series has been out for nearly two weeks now, and after debuting with poor scores from critics and audiences from Rotten Tomatoes, it has still been a win for the platform. Despite ratings of 46% from audiences and 52% from critics on the aggregate site, Pulse remains one of the most popular shows on Netflix, sitting at #4 on the streamer’s top TV chart. The show follows the personal and professional lives of doctors, nurses, and other staff at a busy Miami trauma center with a hurricane closing in. Pulse was written and created for television by Zoe Robyn, and it stars Willa Fitzgerald (Strange Darling), Jessie T. Usher (The Boys), Colin Woodell (The Continental), Jack Bannon (Pennyworth), and Jessy Yates (Law & Order: Svu).

Somewhere deep in Netflix HQ, there’s a boardroom that now smells faintly of champagne and profit. A room where someone just circled Episode 6 on a whiteboard, underlined it twice, and wrote “Franchise Potential?” in red marker like their bonus depended on it.

This article contains spoilers for "Black Mirror" season 7, episode 6 -- "USS Callister: Into Infinity"
When Netflix ordered "Black Mirror" season 7 with a sequel to one of the show's best episodes -- the season 4 opener, "USS Callister" -- fans of Charlie Brooker's dystopian sci-fi anthology perked up their ears. When the first trailer for the pitch-black show's newest season dropped, glimpses of high-octane shootouts and both versions of Nanette (Cristin Milioti) meeting face to face were more than enough to further intrigue the fandom. Now, "USS Callister: Into Infinity" is actually here, and it brings us one particularly big surprise: Jesse Plemons' villainous Robert Daly is back, and he's worse than ever.
The original "USS Callister" outdid the classic "The Twilight Zone" episode "It's a Good Life" by giving it a high tech twist. Daly is introduced as the chief technology officer of Callister, a company behind the online game "Infinity.

Jimmi Simpson is stepping back into the role of Walton for Black Mirror's "USS Callister — Into Infinity," the highly anticipated sequel to the Emmy-winning episode that originally aired in 2017. Simpson says this new chapter isn’t just a continuation — it’s essential.
“It makes everything more interesting and more pertinent,” he tells Gold Derby.
The sequel reunites Simpson with costar Cristin Milioti and director Toby Haynes, nearly a decade after the original episode debuted. Despite the nine-year gap, Simpson says slipping back into the role felt effortless.
“It was like the gang was back together,” he shares. “Just a little bit older.”
Before being cast in "USS Callister," Simpson, best known for his role on HBO's Westworld, was already a die-hard fan of the Charlie Brooker-created anthology series and could hardly believe it when he landed the role of Walton.

When it was first announced, The Penguin was set to be a one-season spin-off that would further explore the Gotham City established by Matt Reevesin The Batman. At the end of the film, Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) has been assassinated, which leaves a massive space open for the city’s other aspiring crime lords to step in. Picking up shortly after the events of the film, The Penguin sees Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) do everything in his power to claim that open seat, and shows him facing off against other rising bosses like Cristin Milioti’s Sofia and Clancy Brown’s Sal — often to explosive outcomes. By the time the miniseries celebrated its finale, the title was a hit with fans and critics alike, holding an 85% approval rating with the former and a 95% approval rating with the latter on Rotten Tomatoes. In the months since its November bow, audiences have...

The world of Black Mirror is back. The screens are darker, the stories more poignant, and the questions more uncomfortable than ever. As we head into this new season, a name appears behind the curtain once again. A familiar name. The same man who has been wreaking havoc on our minds for the past ten years. Yes, Black Mirror Season 7 is Charlie Brooker’s masterpiece once again.
Season 7 brings new fears. New realities. A reflection of the world we live in and the horror we’re heading into. Each episode is like a window. But one that doesn’t look out of, but one that stares back at you. Charlie Brooker isn’t just the creator of Black Mirror.
He’s a cultural alarm bell. A man who turns anxiety into art. Who shows us our true selves through screens, through satire, and terrifying shadows.

Season 7 of Black Mirror dropped April 10 on Netflix after a two-year break. English showrunner Charlie Brooker wrote or cowrote all of the episodes, as usual. He's a five-time Emmy winner for writing and producing "San Junipero" in 2017, writing and producing "USS Callister" in 2018, and producing "Bandersnatch" in 2019. He received a sixth career Emmy nomination last year for writing "Joan Is Awful," but lost to Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer).
Speaking of "Bandersnatch" and "USS Callister," Season 7 marks the first time Black Mirror has revisited previous storylines in the form of cameo and a sequel, respectively. Will Poulter's computer programmer character Colin Ritman was featured in the interactive "Bandersnatch" and now returns with a small role in "Plaything." Meanwhile, "USS Callister: Into Infinity" is a full-on sequel to the original outer space installment, with Cristin Milioti and Jimmi Simpson reprising their crew members of the titular starship.

Black Mirror season 7 is one of the most buzzy seasons the anthology series has had in a long time. With two sequels to acclaimed prior entries and a cast list that includes plenty of recognizable names, this season had the potential to be an absolute knockout — something we haven’t had from Black Mirror in quite a while.
One of the things that will stand out to fans about season 7 of Black Mirror is that it has much less of a horror focus than past seasons. Of this season’s episodes, three are dramas, one is action, one is a thriller, and only one (Plaything) could really be described as straight horror. Perhaps series creator Charlie Brooker took the criticisms of season 6 having too much horror and not enough sci-fi to heart.
As a whole, this season was mostly very strong. The concepts of all six episodes are incredibly intriguing,...
