The seventeenth Fantastic Fest will feature 21 world premieres, 14 North American premieres, and 21 U.S. premieres. Festival Director Lisa Dreyer says,
It’s been far too long since we’ve all been able to gather together and celebrate film the Fantastic Fest way. Fantastic Fest will be making its long-awaited return to in-person festival events in Austin this September, and per usual, the lineup is heavy on delightfully bizarre horror films from around the world.
In addition to the impeccable selection of genre fare the festival has come to be known for, the lineup also features several Cannes favorites that are sure to be players throughout the fall festival season. Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winning “Triangle of Sadness” will make its U.S. premiere, closing out the festival. The U.S. premiere of Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave” is also headed to Fantastic Fest, and the director will be in attendance to accept a lifetime achievement award for his mind-bending body of work, which includes films like “Oldboy” and “The Handmaiden.”

For years, Fantastic Fest, the annual genre film festival in Austin, Texas, has been one of the best kept secrets on the festival circuit. Taking place at one theater (the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar), it’s an endlessly delightful cornucopia of exploding heads, talking animals and deviant sex (sometimes all in the same movie). This year’s festival features 21 world premieres, 14 North American premieres and 21 U.S. premieres, with a mixture of mainstream fare (Paramount’s new horror movie “Smile” will have its premiere at the festival) and the endearingly esoteric.
The festival will once again take over the Alamo Drafthouse from Sept. 22-29 and on the web via a virtual Ff@Home experience from Sept. 29-Oct. 4.
Among the many delights of this year’s festival include the opening night premiere of “Smile,” the U.S. premiere of Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave,” with the closing night film being “Triangle of Sadness,...

Filmax has acquired international rights to “Amazing Elisa,” the newest title from Spanish director and fantastic festival name-stay Sadrac González-Perellón.
The Barcelona-based boutique studio will screen a promo of “Amazing Elisa” during this week’s 2021 Ventana Sur market.
The pick-up sees Filmax returning, this time as just as a sales agent, to the auteur genre fare which built it a global reputation from the turn of the century with breakout hits such as 1999’s “The Nameless” and 2007’s “[Rec].”
Spanish-language genre fare has returned to market favor after “The Platform” bowed on Netflix last-year, becoming the U.S. streaming giant’s most-watched foreign-language movie.
Returning González-Perellón to the mix of fantasy and family dynamics which won him a BiFan Grand Jury Prize for 2017 genre thriller “Black Hollow Cage,” “Amazing Elisa” follows the story of Elisa, a 12-year-old girl who, after the tragic death of her mother, must convince her father that...

Quick takes from the 25th Raindance Film Festival, with public screenings in London through October 1st, 2017.
Black Hollow Cage
Thirteen-year-old Alice (Lowena McDonell) lives alone with her father (Julian Nicholson) in a striking modernist house in the middle of the woods. She is getting used to her new bionic arm and believes that their dog is actually her dead mother, though Dad insists this is not the case. (What Dad actually believes about the voice synthesizer the dog wears around her neck, which appears to be speaking the dog’s thoughts [the voice of Lucy Tillett], is not something Alice ever asks him. Maybe in this apparently future world, people’s pets talk to them as a matter of course.) And then two very young strangers, siblings Erika (Haydée Lysander) and Paul (Marc Puiggener) — she is badly beaten up, and he is mute — appear out of nowhere and disrupt Alice’s existence. Oh, and there...

Co-directors Sadrac González and Sonia Escolano might something quite unique on their hands. Below are some sweet new stills and a trailer for their film, The Vampire in the Hole, which was made for $1.00. Yes, you heard that right. One f’ing dollar. I hear ya, “I bet it’s shit,” you say. Well, does this look like crap?
Thought so. Looks sweet. Here’s the plot: “Vampirism is a newly discovered viral illness whose initial stages spread as quickly as the flu. May has just turned seventeen and has become infected. She is the only vampire in her family and her neighborhood, and as such, her life changes dramatically. In her daily surroundings she is now seen as a monster; kids throw stones at her and she is bullied at work. However, May tries to adapt by following the rules and norms set by the government on infected citizens...

Losaga Films and co-directors Sadrac González and Sonia Escolano apparently worked out a deal with everyone who donated their time and equipment to the project that they would be compensated down the road when the film makes a profit. How could it not?
Check out the new trailer below.

We're all well acquainted with micro-budget filmmaking around here. Thus far the film with the most minimalist of a budget was the indie zombie sensation Colin. That's about to change as we expose you to The Vampire in the Hole made for just a single dollar.

Even more surprising? The flick actually looks really good. Check out the trailer, some stills, artwork, a clip, and even the first five minutes below. For more head on over to Undead Backbrain. Thanks to DC reader Avery for the heads-up!
