Demonstrating the formidable strength of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” empire, the network has renewed “House of the Dragon” for Season 3, in advance of its Season 2 premiere on June 16.
The “Game of Thrones” spinoff series — co-created by Ryan Condal and “Thrones” author George R.R. Martin — has proven to be a fire-breathing hit for the network. The show enjoyed the biggest premiere audience ever for an original series for both HBO and HBO Max (now Max), and the first season averaged 29 million viewers an episode over linear and streaming. It was renewed for Season 2 just one week following its series premiere.
Based on author Martin’s “Game of Thrones” book “Fire & Blood,” “House of the Dragon” follows the Targaryen dynasty in the fictional continent of Westeros. It takes place nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and about 100 years after the Targaryens united the Seven Kingdoms.

House of the Dragon is right around the corner, and the world of Westeros is calling for you. The Game of Thrones prequel completed a successful premiere season in 2022 and will be returning soon for a second installment. However, George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire universe has a lot more in store…

Besides House of the Dragon, Martin’s books have churned out a number of Game of Thrones spinoffs, all in various stages of development. And his fans would be really happy to know that a spinoff based on an important part of Westerosi history is rumored to be back in the works as well. The tale of Princess Nymeria of Dorne.

Since the conclusion of Game of Thrones, HBO has been keen to keep the franchise alive with a variety of spinoff series, but not all of them will make it to the finish line. It was reported earlier this year that Ten Thousand Ships, a spinoff chronicling the journey of Princess Nymeria leading Rhoynar refugees to Dorne, had been shelved. However, George R.R. Martin says that the project is now back on with a new writer.
Martin wrote on his blog that Eboni Booth, who won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize last month for her play Primary Truth, is working on a new pilot script for Ten Thousand Ships. “She’s an amazingly talented young playwright, and a joy to work with; when not writing and producing her prize-winning plays on- and off-Broadway, she has been kept busy by me and HBO, working on a new pilot for Ten Thousand Ships,...

The overwhelming success of Game of Thrones predictably created a special kind of rush over at HBO. Countless screenwriters are trying their luck, rigorously penning and pitching their spin-off and prequel ideas, and George Martin and the HBO executives have to go through them all, turning down… Pretty much everything.
One promising spin-off that was previously canceled, however, might still sail!
HBO Turned Down Grrm-Approved Prequel
When it comes to Game of Thrones, the best spin-off ideas are often prequels. George Martin made sure to create vast and captivating history for Westeros and Essos, with many compelling and intriguing historical figures fans would love to see on their screens. Warrior-Queen Nymeria has always been one of them, and writer Brian Helgeland decided to adapt her story, 10,000 Ships, for a spin-off.
HBO didn’t pick up his idea, despite his having George Martin’s full support.

George R. R. Martin, creator of the “Game of Thrones” franchise, says there may be a new spinoff to look forward to.
In a blog post on Tuesday, the author and producer said that playwright Eboni Booth is “working on a new pilot” for “Ten Thousand Ships,” a series that screenwriter Bryan Helgeland recently said he’d been attached to before HBO scrapped the project. (HBO declined to comment on whether “Ten Thousand Ships” is in development.)
Congratulating Booth for her recent Pulitzer Prize win, Martin wrote, “She’s an amazingly talented young playwright, and a joy to work with; when not writing and producing her prize-winning plays on- and off-Broadway, she has been kept busy by me and HBO, working on a new pilot for Ten Thousand Ships, a Game Of Thrones spinoff about Nymeria and the Rhoynar. Look, if you've been paying even the slightest amount of attention to /Film's coverage of all the various "Game of Thrones" spinoffs and prequels in development over the last few years, then you know exactly how we have to open this article about a previously-canceled series that might be coming back to life. In the prescient words of House Greyjoy: "What is dead may never die, but rises again harder and stronger."
While those house words were referring to the act of, uh, intentionally drowning themselves to prove how Tough they are (the Greyjoys were a weird bunch), it still feels pretty relevant when it comes to an unexpected bit of news regarding "10,000 Ships." It was initially reported to be in the works back in 2021 with writer Amanda Segel attached and was intended to tackle a particularly interesting era of Westerosi history. As Game of Thrones fans prepare for the season two premiere of House of the Dragon this Sunday, saga creator George R.R. Martin is giving a promising update on a potential new series.
Martin revealed that the Princess Nymeria prequel Ten Thousand Ships is alive again and making progress under a new writer — Eboni Booth, who won a Pulitzer Prize in May for her play Primary Trust.
“She’s an amazingly talented young playwright, and a joy to work with; when not writing and producing her prize-winning plays on- and off-Broadway, she has been kept busy by me and HBO, working on a new pilot for Ten Thousand Ships, a Game of Thrones spinoff about Nymeria and the Rhoynar,” Martin wrote on his blog. “We’re all very excited about this one … though we’re still trying to figure out how we’re going to pay for 10,000 ships, 300 dragons and those giant turtles.

Remember how we recently reported that legendary writer Brian Helgeland pitched a Game of Thrones spin-off series to HBO, which was tentatively titled 10,000 Ships, and was supposed to be focused on Queen Nymeria, the warrior-queen of the Rhoynar? The idea was, as you might remember, rejected by HBO at the time, and based on everything, we criticized that as a bad move. Well… it seems now that it wasn’t the idea that was an issue but rather Helgeland, as George R.R. Martin himself confirmed that he is currently working on the pilot for a Game of Thrones spin-off series titled… you guessed it… 10,000 Ships!
This comes off as a rather strange piece of news, seeing what was revealed last month, but it seems that Queen Nymeria’s story will be ultimately presented to the fans, although we have yet to see how, as it obviously won’t be Helegeland’s original idea.

Film critic Justin Chang won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for criticism on Monday for varied and “richly evocative” work that telegraphs how Americans see movies now.
The New Yorker‘s current film critic won the prize on Monday for his 2023 work at the Los Angeles Times, where he worked until early 2024. Other nominees in the category included novelist and essayist Zadie Smith, who was nominated for her New York Review of Books review of the 2022 film Tar, and The New Yorker‘s theater critic Vinson Cunningham for a number of reviews that evinced “a formidable knowledge of the stage and the mechanics of performance along with canny observations on the human condition.”
During the 2024 ceremony, the late cultural critic Greg Tate — who wrote for The Village Voice and Rolling Stone — also received a special citation for his work. “His language, cribbed from literature, academia, popular culture and hip-hop was as...

Primary Trust, Eboni Booth’s play that was given an Off Broadway staging by Roundabout Theatre Company last summer, won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Drama today.
The play was described by the Pulitzer board as “A simple and elegantly crafted story of an emotionally damaged man who finds a new job, new friends and a new sense of worth, illustrating how small acts of kindness can change a person’s life and enrich an entire community.”
The critically acclaimed play follows Kenneth, a 38-year-old bookstore worker who, in the words of Roundabout’s synopsis, “spends his evenings sipping mai tais at the local tiki bar. When he’s suddenly laid off, Kenneth finally begins to face a world he’s long avoided – with transformative and even comical results.”
“This is the story of friendship,” Kenneth says in the play. “Of how I got a new job. A story of love and balance and time.

Nominations for the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced on Tuesday, April 23. The stars of the hit Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe, read off the nominees live from the Museum of Broadway.
Off-Broadway productions ultimately out-paced Broadway with this critics group. The new David Yazbek musical “Dead Outlaw” led the pack with nine nominations. It was followed by “The Connector,” another Off-Broadway musical, and “Stereophonic,” a lauded Broadway play, with seven nominations each.

Nominations for the 39th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were announced today by Amber Iman and George Abud, two stars of Broadway’s “Lempicka.” The Lortels honor outstanding achievement in Off-Broadway theater. The 2024 ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 5 at NYU Skirball Center. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf.
It’s common for productions to begin their life Off-Broadway before transferring to the Main Stem, so many of this year’s Tony Awards hopefuls are among the list of Lortel nominations. Chief among these contenders is “Hell’s Kitchen,” the semi-autobiographical musical from Alicia Keys. That tuner garnered five Lortel nominations. These include Best Musical, Best Choreography for Camille A. Brown, a Lead Performer bid for Maleah Joi Moon, and Featured Performer bids for Shoshana Bean and Kecia Lewis. All performance categories at the Lortel Awards are gender neutral.

Following a critically acclaimed Netflix adaptation, Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel The Queen’s Gambit is heading to Broadway. What’s more, the musical adaptation will feature music and lyrics written by Mitski.
In a statement, Mitski explained that she had been “a fan of the Netflix show, and an even greater fan of the original novel” before being approached for the musical, which was first reported to be in the works back in 2021.
“I was already determined to be a member of this team,” Mitski explained, but that determination only “grew tenfold” after meeting her collaborators, Eboni Booth and Whitney White. Mitski continued, “I absolutely had to be a part of this! I am ecstatic to get to work with all of these amazing creatives, who’ve each built beautiful and unique repertoires of their own.”

Academy Award singer and songwriter Mitski will pen the score to the stage adaptation of The Queen’s Gambit, which is currently in development.
In addition to Mitski, the creative team will include Eboni Booth, playwright of Primary Trust, which recently ran Off-Broadway starring William Jackson Harper, as the book writer. Whitney White, director of JaJa’s African Hair Braiding, currently running on Broadway, will direct.
Adrienne Warren (Tina, The Woman King) joins the producing team, alongside Mara Isaacs (Hadestown), Lawryn Lacroix and the previously announced Level Forward.
The musical adaptation, based on the 1983 novel that inspired the Netflix adaptation, was first announced in 2021. Details about the timeline for the musical’s world premiere production will be announced at a later date, according to the production.
The story follows chess prodigy Beth Harmon as she rises from playing chess in an orphanage to competing in the U.S. Open Championship and on the world stage.

Jess would like everyone to be comfortable. That means everyone, from her distant boss who doesn’t seem eager to develop Jess’s passion projects to the well-meaning waitress who casually tosses off a comment that’s perhaps not exactly racist, but certainly rooted in prejudiced thinking. She’d like her mother, whipsmart but not always aware of the weight of her words, to be comfortable. She’d like her ex-boyfriend, eager to please but not receptive to Jess’s wishes, to be comfortable. Her best friends, who have asked Jess to serve as a surrogate to their baby, she’d definitely like them to be comfortable, too. Jess? Her comfort comes second to everyone else, hell, maybe even third.

There’s a moment in Jeremy Hersh’s feature directorial debut The Surrogate where a heated argument devoid of any correct answers reaches the inevitable question: “Where do you draw the line?” It’s the corner in which we all find ourselves when forced to confront what Hersh calls “the gap between ideals and practical realities.” Because even if we refuse to create such barriers when thinking about topics in the abstract, we’re often very quick to erect them at the exact moment an issue concerns us personally. Maybe it will reveal the truth of our behind-closed-doors hypocrisy. Maybe it will expose us as a monster. Or, like in the case of Jess (Jasmine Batchelor), it will shine a light upon our righteousness. Humanity’s enduring fallibility will be confirmed either way.
And that’s a good thing. It’s through our imperfections that we remain human. It’s...

"We deserve to try and have a kid who's..." "perfect?" Monument Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled The Surrogate, which first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. There are many films all titled The Surrogate (including plenty of horror), this one is about a woman who agrees to be the surrogate mother for a gay couple. Twelve weeks into the pregnancy, a prenatal test comes back with unexpected results indicating the baby will have Down Syndrome, posing a moral dilemma and challenging the relationship between the three of them. The film stars Jasmine Batchelor as Jess, with Chris Perfetti, Sullivan Jones, Brooke Bloom, Eboni Booth, and William DeMeritt. This looks a bit similar to the German film 24 Weeks, also about the same moral dilemma with a pregnancy. Take a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jeremy Hersh's The Surrogate,...

Jagged Little Pill, Moulin Rouge!, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, Grand Horizons, Mary-Louise Parker and Jonathan Groff are among this year’s Outer Critics Circle Awards recipients, a collection of Broadway and Off Broadway recipients that make up the organization’s first-ever slate of multiple honorees.
With the Tony Awards remaining a mere possibility this year, the 70th Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards took an unusual approach to an unusual, pandemic-shortened theater season: In lieu of selecting traditional nominees with one winner from each category, the Occ named five honorees in each of its technical categories and up to six honorees in acting categories. Four artists received the annual John Gassner Award this season, commemorating works by new American playwrights.
