While I'll never understand the failure of Born To Fight star Dan Chupong to really catch on as a martial arts leading man - I've always found him enormously charismatic myself - it would appear that those awaiting the rise of a new fight hero in Thailand may have their man with the arrivial of real life muay thai fighter Buakaw Banchamek in the lead of upcoming historical epic Legend Of The Broken Sword Warrior. The latest from Bang Rajan actor Bin Bunluerit, Broken Sword stars Banchamek as Thongdee - a real life military leader who rose up from the streets via the fighting ring to become a hero to his people. Historical accuracy? I have no idea how much of that there is but...

The last time Dan Chupong starred for director Panna Rittikrai it was for Born To Fight, a film that - other than stuntman Chupong - was populated almost entirely with national level Thai athletes across a variety of disciplines including, yes, the national soccer team. Most of the footie themed stunts in Born To Fight, though, were executed using CGI which clearly did not sit quite right with Rittikrai because he's going back to the combat soccer arena in the upcoming Vengeance Of An Assassin and this time it's all real. How do you pull of something like this on the big screen? Handily enough for us there's a new behind the scenes reel from the film that shows us. It's one hell of a goofy...

Though the now sadly departed action maestro Panna Rittikrai was best known as a fight choreographer thanks to his long history with Ong Bak star Tony Jaa his skill set actually ran far deeper than that and I would suggest that as good as his martial arts work was, Rittikrai's true genius lay in his ability to stage and execute long take action sequences. Need an example? Go back to Born To Fight and check out the over-the-shoulder perspective based assault sequence of Dan Chupong making his way through the village with a shotgun ... it's one of the best video game inspired perspective sequences ever captured on film. And it's this part of Rittikrai's repertoire being explored in a pair of new promo videos for...

Panna Rittikrai, the action choreographer who brought us Tony Jaa and Jeejaa Yanin has sadly passed away at the age of 53. It was said Panna was suffering from a long illness, which he sadly did not come through. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this sad time.
Panna had some great movies under his belt as choreographer, he brought the world Tony Jaa (Ong Bak movies) and more recently Tom Yum Goong 2. Also we seen Jeeja Yanin come through in the movie Chocolate and Dan Chupong (Born To Fight).
Panna started off by forming his own 20 man stunt team and was driven by watching movies from Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. In an interview he once said “When the audience realises that the stunt-work is real — that they’re not special effects — they’ll regard it not only as spectacle but as something more high-impact,...

It’s not a good idea to give Tony Jaa anything sacred or precious. Chances are someone is just going to steal it, kill it, or cook it. “Ong Bak” director Prachya Pinkaew’s “Tom Yum Goong 2″ (aka “The Protector 2″) finds the hero from the original film searching for a missing elephant one more time. Here’s hoping he has better luck this time around. In addition to Jaa, the upcoming sequel features Petchtai Wongkamlao, Marrese Crump, JeeJa Yanin, Dan Chupong, Rhatha Phongam, and RZA. I’m particularly excited about JeeJa Yanin’s involvement with the flick. I could literally watch that girl kick phone books for 90 minutes. Do people still use phone books? Never mind. I feel old. Check out this synopsis: Kham is the last in long line of guards who once watched over the King of Thailand’s war elephants. Traditionally, only the perfect elephants could successfully help defend the throne.

Panna Rittikrai and Dan Chupong are getting back together. Best known as the mentor to and fight choreographer for Tony Jaa, Rittikrai had a long career as a screen fighter and director himself, the man plying his trade in a string of ultra low budget grinders never seen anywhere outside of Thailand until Jaa vaulted him to fame. And so when Rittikrai was given the first real budget of his career in 2004 to direct Born To Fight - a remake of one of his own earlier titles - nobody thought that much of it. It was, among other things, simply a gesture of respect from producers Sahamongkol, a thank you to the veteran performer who had groomed and prepared Tony Jaa to become by...

Heads up fans of Tony Jaa: There are rumblings on several fronts from the upcoming Tom Yum Goong 2.Up first is the new artwork, which you see to the left. It may seem a minor note but it's worth pointing out that Jaa is the only one featured on the new poster, which is a change from the earlier art which also featured co-star Jija Yanin prominently. I take this as a sign that the footage is turning out well and Yanin - along with Born To Fight star Dan Chupong, who is also in here - is no longer considered necessary to market and sell the film. This is a good ting for fans hoping for a Jaa rebound.Second? Due to production delays the...

It’s been a while since we seen Thai international superstar Tony Jaa, best known for his work on the groundbreaking Ong Bak films & 2005′s Tom Yum Goong or The Protector in the west. So why the hold up, as of May 28th 2010 Jaa had left the film industry & was ordained as a Buddhist monk. After his 2011 return, Jaa started production re – teaming up with action director Prachya Pinkaew. This is his third film along side him and fans worldwide are expecting big things from this film.
So why was the first material scrapped for the movie? When it was 40% of the way through production at present? Tony Jaa during production was to get married, which held back production, then there were rumors flying about the material wasn’t good enough, so they wanted to re-shoot the movie again. The third, and most-recent, Ong-Bak film came out in 2010, featuring Tony Jaa as the resurrected warrior Tien defends his village from the vicious Bhuti Sangkha (Dan Chupong). Could a fourth Ong-Bak movie be in the works? Perhaps, though you have to filter through some truths before you unearth a nugget of speculation. Here.s what we know for sure. A 3D, side-scrolling Ong-Bak video game is in development, and Kan Supabanpot, general manager at the Thai developer Studio Hive, sat down with PlayStation Lifestyle to spill details. He said that users will be playing as an unnamed character portrayed by Jaa, and that the seasoned fighter and his stunt team were .heavily involved. in the design of the game.s action sequences and fight moves. Back in April (here), it was announced that Tony Jaa would be returning to Thai films in The Protector 2, after his “retirement”. It’s beginning to look like The Protector 2 just might be the end-all-be-all of ass-kicking movies, with the cast of martial artists director Prachya Pinkaew is lining up for the film, which will be in 3D. Joining Jaa, is Chocolate‘s Jija Yanin of course, and newly added to the cast are: Dan Chupong (Dynamite Warrior, Ong Bak 3), Kazu Tang (Bko: Bangkok Knockout) and American martial artist Marrese Crump (RZA’s The Man With The Iron Fists).
No word on the plot. The film is expected to be out in Thailand sometime in mid-2012.

If you're going to make a martial arts film and you don't have the budget of a grandiose Chinese epic like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or Hero to take advantage of, there's a way to make up for it: get silly. It worked for Jackie Chan more than a few times, and it looks like it's going to work for Muay Thai Giant as well. The story of a seven foot man who goes into a Hulk-like martial arts rage when he eats the spicy Thai food "somtum", Muay Thai Fighter is too ridiculous not to enjoy. With that said, you're in luck, because we're giving away a copy to one lucky reader. Hit the jump to find out how you can win.
Here's the official synopsis:
While on holiday in Pattaya seven foot gentle giant Barney Emerald is drugged and robbed of all his personal possessions including his passport.

Action fans were salivating at the thought of modern masters Dan Chupong and Tony Jaa facing off, but that particular fight is a bit of a let-down, especially coming after an excellent scene in which Jaa actually enlists the aid of elephants in fighting off an army of Chupong's followers.

The Eagle
The Stars: Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, Donald Sutherland
The Plot: In Roman-ruled Britain, a young Roman soldier endeavors to honor his father’s memory by finding his lost legion’s golden emblem.
The Buzz: It didn’t blow me away, but the trailer for The Eagle did make me want to check this one out in the theater. The cinematography and filming locales of The Eagle look to be fantastic. The score in the trailer was fairly derivative; standard music to augment the excitement and adventure that such a film promises.

I love Tony Jaa. He's a goddamn dynamo. When Jackie Chan lost his balls to the same kiddie grinder that claimed Eddie Murphy and Ice Cube, I fretted that there'd be a lack of a does-his-own-stunts acrobatic martial artist. And along came Jaa. Watching him flip around and smash things with his elbows and knees, careening off temple walls and marketplace stalls like Tinkerbell on meth, it's a motherfucking joy to behold. But somewhere between Ong Bak: the Thai Warrior and this film, he burned out in a big fucking way. The slip started under extreme pressure during the filming of the second film, which I despite a confubbling plot I adored, merely because Jaa ended the film kicking the shit out of All The Ninjas. All one hundred thousand. But in the latest installment, Jaa's lost prince warrior is beaten and broken, and infused with the noble spirit of Buddha,...

Since his arrival on the martial arts scene doubling for Robin Shou in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Tony Jaa (born Panom Worawit) has made a lasting impression. Legend has it he attracted serious interest from the director Prachya Pinkaew (The Protector) purely on the merits of his demo reel, and Pinkaew was so impressed that he created 2003’s Ong-bak to showcase Jaa’s abilities. Worawit rebranded himself Tony Jaa with a view to taking his unique blend of action in an international direction. It became Jaa’s breakout film — although sometimes criticized as simply showing off — featuring his inventive moves done without wires or the assistance of CGI, which led to inevitable comparisons to Bruce Lee and attracted considerable international attention.

[In a move that should surprise nobody Magnolia Pictures have just acquired Us rights to this one.]
Ladies and gentlemen, Panna Rittikrai is a crazy person. The Thai martial artist, director and stunt coordinator rose to international prominence with the success of Ong Bak, a film he choreographed for his then largely unknown protege Tony Jaa. But for literally decades before Ong Bak Rittikrai was one of the hardest working men in the biz, starring in and directing ultra low budget action films in which he laid his - and his stunt crew's - bodies on the line with a string of ridiculous, ultra dangerous stunts with seemingly no safety nets. That nobody has been killed on a Rittikrai film - that I know of - is an absolute miracle.
Rittikra has largely stayed behind the scenes since Ong Bak, his one big directorial effort in the years since being Dan Chupong star vehicle Born To Fight, a film that put the spotlight on one of Rittikrai's favored stunt performers.

Ong Bak 3
Stars: Tony Jaa, Saranyu Wonggrajang, Primrata Dechudom, Petchai Wongkamlao, Nirutti Sirijanya, Supakorn ‘Tok’ Kijusuwan, Dan Chupong | Written and Directed by Tony Jaa & Panna Rittikrai
The original Ong Bak remains one of those martial arts films that persistently leave a massive smile on my face during and after watching it. The set pieces are simply sublime and the sheer athleticism of Tony Jaa, who did All of his own stunts, is truly remarkable. Keep your Jackie Chan or your Jet Li, Tony Jaa is a bad ass and is nothing but a joy to watch leapfrogging around the screen screaming for 2 hours. However, the latest offering Ong Bak 3 follows on from a rather mediocre prequel and it is a film that didn’t really need making. The story is basic, but as you would expect there are some gravity defying and spine crunching acrobatics that prevent you from completely zoning out.

Ong Bak 3 – teaser trailer
Directed by: Tony Jaa
Starring: Tony Jaa, Dan Chupong, Kessarin Ektawatkul
Rating: R
Release Date: January 14, 2011
Trailer Score: 4/10
My Thoughts: I’ll do a lot of things in the name of martial arts flicks. No, seriously, I even took a class in college on kung fu movies, but there are some times when a line must be drawn. Even as a huge fan of the first Ong Bak and Tony Jaa’s incredible skills as a martial artists, Ong Bak 3 holds little to no appeal. Hell, even with the second one when they tried to make Tony Jaa’s character into some profound being, I wasn’t buying it. I’m just hoping that this will have enough action to make it worthwhile, but judging from this teaser trailer, I’m still a little worried. I don’t know who they’re trying to...

Tony Jaa stars, writes and directs "Ong Bak 3" from Magnolia Pictures. The actioner opens on December 3rd (On Demand) and theatrically from January 14th next year. Picking up at the cliffhanger ending where Ong Bak 2 leaves off, Jaa ramps up the epic supernatural elements of the previous film, while still maintaining the trademark bone-crunching action that the series is known for. This time he must face his ultimate enemy: a fierce supernatural warrior named “Demon Crow,” played by fellow martial arts sensation Dan Chupong (Dynamite Warrior). Eagerly anticipated by martial arts aficionados for some time, the matchup of Jaa and Chupong is explosive.

Tony Jaa is back! Yes, the man who jumps through barbed wire hoops feet first and can scale walls like Spider-Man returns to our screens with Ong Bak 3. He’s wrote the script, directed it and will probably “write the theme tune, sing the theme tune”. Okay, maybe not.

Tony Jaa's Ong Bak 3 is a train wreck, frankly, but it's now a train wreck with a trailer that casts it in the best possible light. Heck, the new Us trailer for the film is so good that it actually made me wonder briefly if I'd gotten things wrong when I first saw the picture (I got over that quickly) and it managed to do that without including Dan Chupong in any significant way. Which is impressive since Chupong has all the best bits in the movie.

Tien is brought back to life with the help from Pim (Primrata Dechudom) as well as Mhen (Petchai Wongkamlao) and the Kana Khone villagers. Deep into the meditation taught by Phra Bua (Nirutti Sirijanya), Tien finally is able to achieve ‘Nathayut’. A third poster for upcoming martial arts prequel-sequel Ong Bak 3 has hit the web (via Yahoo), boasting a somewhat more meditative Tony Jaa than previous offerings. After the goofiness of the first instalment gave way to the grandiose of the second, Ong Bak 3 looks set to keep things fresh with a supernatural twist – just look at the poster’s ’3′.
Tony Jaa returns in front and behind the camera for another dose of Muay Thai badassery, this film taking place before the first film but after the second. Cue synopsis:

Ong Bak was released in 2003 and was a hit with audiences in Thailand and The West and also received mostly favourable reviews from critics. A sequel was announced (although the film ultimately became a sort of prequel) and was released in 2008. This was another box office success although critics were less enamoured with Ong Bak 2.
Ong Bak 3 picks the story of Tien (Tony Jaa) from Ong Bak 2 and opens with him in chains. He is then tortured for what feels like an incredibly long time before spending an even longer time recovering from this torture. Although a little unclear in the film it actually seems like Tien dies and is then reborn. This torture and subsequent rebirth is most likely inspired by Jaa’s interests in Buddhism but it also brings to mind the version of a particular story brought to film by Mel Gibson.

Tony Jaa’s “Ong Bak 3″ hasn’t exactly gotten a lot of rave reviews, but that hasn’t stopped Magnet Releasing (the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures) from acquiring the film for domestic release. Given Jaa’s popularity among action fans, that seems like a no-brainer. “Ong Bak 3″ is scheduled for limited release in theaters sometime in January 2011. The third and final film in the “Ong Bak” franchise returns star, director, and writer Tony Jaa, this time facing off against a supernatural warrior named Demon Crow (played by fellow Thai martial artist Dan Chupong). Much stuntman-wrecking and bone-crunching action ensues. Trailer below:...

Fantastic Fest is also adding it to their “Rolling Roadshow” list, which prides itself on an immersive experience for seeing the film (e.g. the classic On the Waterfront projected on a New Jersey pier).
