Are Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott the Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro of queer indie cinema? That remains to be seen, but their second feature "Bottoms" definitely has the potential to be the sleeper hit of August. "Bottoms" is about Pj (Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri), two lesbian high school seniors desperate to get laid before college. So, they start a women's self-defense club, hoping to hook up with the cheerleaders who join.
Distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the film employed a staggered rollout. It opened in just 10 locations across the U.S. on August 25, 2023, taking in $516 thousand, enjoying a boost from great buzz (read /Film's review here) and discounted $4 tickets on August 27, aka National Cinema Day.
A week later, it opened wide across 715 theaters, and its momentum hasn't dissipated. Though "The Equalizer 3" was the box office king of Labor Day Weekend, "Bottoms" looks to make a healthy gross too...

We kicked off August discussing the ins and outs of the photography industry in the American giallo Eyes of Laura Mars before getting serious with a discussion on the afterlife and religion in queer director Alejandro Amenábar‘s The Others. Now we’re somewhere in between drama and comedy with writer/director Emma Seligman‘s raucous comedy slash anxiety-driven Jewish horror film, Shiva Baby.
In the film, Rachel Sennott stars as Danielle, a young woman who is secretly doing sex work on the side of her College degree. As the film opens, Danielle is meeting with her married lover Max (Danny Deferrari) before heading to a Shiva, a week of Jewish mourning, where she meets her parents Debbie (Polly Draper) and Joel (Fred Melamed).
Danielle’s lies about her financial status and career plans quickly begin to surface when Max arrives with his wife Kim (Dianna Agron) and baby in tow.

Cillian Murphy is J. Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer, written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan. Courtesy of Universal
“Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds” is the famous quote from the Bhagavad Gita that physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer spoke upon witnessing the first denotation of a nuclear device, as the world entered the new era of nuclear weapons. Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s epic drama about Oppenheimer, his work on the Manhattan Project, and his treatment after the war. The biographical drama starts like a historical thriller and ends like a profound warning to the world, all set against the sweep of history that changed the world.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, Nolan’s epic film in fact opens with a reminder of that myth of the man who stole...

Christopher Nolan kicked off Universal’s CinemaCon presentation today in Las Vegas, taking the stage to talk about his thriller Oppenheimer, which releases in July. Cillian Murphy stars as the titular J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist whose work on the Manhattan Project led to the creation of the atomic bomb.
“I’m here with a story in the story of J Robert Oppenheimer,” Nolan said. “I know of no more dramatic tale with higher stakes, twists and turns and ethical dilemmas. … The finest minds in the country were in a desperate race against the Nazis to harness the power of the atom in World War II. Picture those same minds realizing the possibility that they might set fire to the entire world, yet they went ahead and pushed the button. I wanted to be there and see what that might be like.”

HBO is developing a comedy set in the world of a sugar baby – where an older person dates a younger person with the promise of money and gifts.
Sugar comes from Canadian filmmaker Emma Seligman and Adam McKay and his Hyperobject Industries production company.
The half-hour project follows a young woman in New York who balances her neurotic Jewish family with her life as a college sugar baby.
It is timely given the news about a certain Congressman from a certain southern state.
Seligman will write and direct the pilot and will exec produce alongside McKay and Hyperobject Industries’ Betsy Koch. Shiva Baby producers Lizzie Shapiro, Kieran Altman, and Katie Schiller will co-produce.
Seligman is behind Shiva Baby, which was a SXSW short film that she adapted into a feature film starring Rachel Sennott, Polly Draper, Dianna Agron, Molly Gordon, Fred Melamed and Danny Deferrari. The film was released by Utopia on April.

From its double-entendre title to the hilarious sightgag of a closing scene, Emma Seligman’s debut feature, Shiva Baby, is universal in its uncomfortable awkwardness and specific in how it chooses to bathe in it. Adapted and expanded from her NYU thesis short, Seligman’s film follows Danielle (Rachel Sennott), a young Jewish New Yorker who has taken to sex work to solidify her funds. After concluding a session with a client, Max (Danny Deferrari), Danielle heads to Flatbush to meet up with her parents (Polly Draper and Fred Melamed) and attend the shiva of a family friend. If your first film is like your first-born child, then the adage would hold that it takes a village to make a movie. Especially when you’re fresh out of film school, just 24 years old, and working on a tight indie budget. From the outside, Emma Seligman’s “Shiva Baby” employs many hallmarks of independent film: It’s set in one day, shot in a single location, and features a breakout performance from a relative newcomer, comedian Rachel Sennott. But behind the scenes, there were other forces unique to indie film: A network of women — producers, actresses, and fellow filmmakers — supporting Seligman at every step.

Writer-director Emma Seligman brings her feature Shiva Baby to theaters and Tvod starting today — and it is quite a comedic ride.
Released by Utopia, Shiva Baby follows a young woman who is trying to keep the different versions of herself in order when she runs into her sugar daddy and her ex-girlfriend at a shiva with her parents.
Let’s elaborate on all of that.
Danielle (Rachel Sennott) is a college student on the verge of graduation. She has a sugar daddy Max (Danny Deferrari) that pays her on a regular basis. One day, after rushing from her sugar daddy to her neurotic parents’ family shiva, she is given the third degree by various estranged relatives about her appearance and lack of post-grad plans. Meanwhile, her ex-girlfriend, Maya (Molly Gordon) is getting all the praise because she got into law school.
Things take even more of a turn when her...

“I love Zoom because I always get a little peek of everyone’s home,” says Shiva Baby star Rachell Sennott at the start of our recent video interview, gesturing to the wall behind her. “It’s, like, bland — just wall. I feel like it’s so much weirder when it’s literally what I have right now, where it’s just neutral, because then it’s like, ‘What are you hiding? What’s over there?’” Within just a few seconds of Zoom chatting, Sennott’s wry, razor-sharp but also delightfully self-deprecating personality as both an actor and comedian comes through. That personality has helped make her a legitimate star on Instagram and Twitter, and now onscreen, as well.

"You are flirting with everyone here... Chugging wine...!" Utopia has revealed the second official trailer, a "naughty" red band one, for the acclaimed indie comedy titled Shiva Baby, which premiered at last year's Toronto Film Festival and was one of the big breakouts from the fest. The film marks the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Emma Seligman, who channels her own personal experiences in life to make this an authentically hilarious comedy. College student Danielle must cover her tracks when she unexpectedly runs into her sugar daddy at a "shiva" (a Jewish tradition of seven days' mourning for the dead)—along with her parents, ex-girlfriend and family friends also in attendance. That sounds mortifying. Rachel Sennott stars in this as Danielle, with Molly Gordon, Polly Draper, Danny Deferrari, Fred Melamed, and Dianna Agron. This looks like it's going to be extra raunchy and extra funny – and reviews confirm it's worthwhile.

Utopia has released the first trailer for “Shiva Baby,” an absurd Jewish comedy about a college student who runs into both her sugar daddy and her ex-girlfriend at a family funeral. “Shiva Baby” marks the feature directorial debut of writer/director Emma Seligman, who developed the feature from a short by the same name, which was her NYU thesis film. “Shiva Baby” premiered at the 2020 SXSW Film Festival to largely positive reviews, including by this critic, who wrote: “Bearing a likeness to the early work of Jill Soloway and Jennifer Westfeldt, “Shiva Baby” blends a claustrophobic Jewish humor with a sexy premise to deliver a lively debut.”
“Shiva Baby” follows chaotic bisexual Danielle (comedian Rachel Sennott), who arrives late to a Jewish funeral, also called a shiva, after a stressful morning trying to extract payment from her sugar daddy Max (Danny Deferrari). Polly Draper and Fred Melamed are pitch perfect as Danielle’s parents,...

A selection at TIFF and SXSW, Emma Seligman’s Shiva Baby was a major hit on the festival circuit last fall as we named it one of our favorite features. Starring Rachel Sennott, Molly Gordon, Dianna Agron, Danny Deferrari, Polly Draper, and Fred Melamed, the film follows a young woman who struggles to keep up different versions of herself when she runs into her sugar daddy and her ex-girlfriend at a shiva with her parents. Now set for an April 2 release in theaters and digitally via Utopia, the first trailer and poster have arrived.

Arthouse streaming service Mubi has snapped up rights to Toronto International Film Festival title “Shiva Baby” for the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, India, Turkey and Latin America.
Written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Emma Seligman, “Shiva Baby” follows a young bisexual Jewish woman at a shiva — a mourning tradition in the Jewish community — at which she must confront her over-achieving ex-girlfriend as well as her sugar daddy, his girlfriend and their baby.
Utopia Media boarded the film ahead of its Toronto premiere.
“Shiva Baby” — which began life as a short written and directed by Seligman while studying film at New York University — screened in the narrative feature competition at SXSW, and received its public premiere at last month’s TIFF. Variety critic Tomris Laffly said of the movie, “Think of this late-coming-of-age farce as a funny ‘Krisha’ or the indoor apocalypse that takes place in ‘Mother!’ — but with broken glass objects,...

In writer-director Emma Seligman’s hilarious, sneakily eruptive debut feature “Shiva Baby,” the acerbic Danielle is many things: an East Coast college senior majoring in gender studies; a young, bisexual Jewish woman; a sugar baby testing out the transactional powers of her sexuality. That last slice of her identity is a leap, but it’s the one we get to encounter first. In the film’s opening moments, Danielle’s fake whimpers draw near, soon resolving into an orgasm that sounds as cringingly phony as her moans. She gets dressed hastily at the end of the tryst, accepting an expensive bracelet and a wad of cash for her time from the older, generous Max (Danny Deferrari).
Despite the awkwardness in the air, the play between Danielle’s sarcastic edge and Max’s disheveled ease suggests they’ve done this before. She lies about needing the money to put herself through law school.

It is apropos that Emma Seligman’s Shiva Baby is screening in the Toronto International Film Festival’s Discovery platform. It is a discovery, in every sense: the discovery of a new comic voice behind the camera, the discovery of a note-perfect star in lead actor Rachel Sennott, and the discovery of a viewing experience that is at once hilarious, awkward, uncomfortable, and unforgettable. Shiva Baby is a blast of energy and from its first moment to its last Seligman finds the right balance. There is genuine suspense, if not horror; the score, by Ariel Marx, could just as easily fit a summer camp slasher flick. But the greatest feeling for the audience––after discomfort––is excitement.

This acerbic feature, adapted from the short of the same name expands on the original with further complications, but the aesthetic of this chamber-piece remains equally grounded and squeamishly uncomfortable over the course of a socially excruciating afternoon. Uncomfortable in the best way of course, as the very selfish college grad Danielle (Rachel Sennott) is introduced climaxing at her sugar daddy Max’s (Danny Deferrari) studio apartment. She receives a call soon after from her mother urging her to come to a shiva (a sort of Jewish after-party for a funeral). The question of ‘who died’ is an afterthought for this narcissist, so self-absorbed that lying comes naturally. Danielle leaves Max with a fake excuse, but lingers long enough to collect her stipend from him, savings...

Shiva Baby kicks off with an unpersuasive orgasm. "Yeah, Daddy," Danielle (Rachel Sennott) intones, the lack of conviction in her voice telegraphing the transactional nature of the coupling. Indeed, the "daddy" here is of the "sugar" variety — a suavely scruffy 30-something (Danny Deferrari) named Max, whom the NYU student is sleeping with for cash in this impressive feature debut from Emma Seligman.

Richard Dreyfuss was able to see some redemption for infamous fraud mastermind Bernie Madoff – but he doesn't give that benefit of the doubt to all his characters.
During his appearance on Good Morning America Wednesday, Dreyfuss was quick to qualify that his eponymous character in the new ABC miniseries is "the second most despicable man [in modern history] because I've already played Dick Cheney."
That zing aside, Dreyfuss gave insights on his process of channeling Madoff – and the surprising empathy he gained for the imprisoned fraudster, now 77, who orchestrated the largest Ponzi scheme ever by an individual and is currently serving a 150-year prison sentence.
