The Writers Guild of America has set a strike authorization vote to begin on April 11.
While this marks the first step toward a potential writers strike, with this process requiring a certain amount of notification for members and time to take the vote, a work stoppage would not actually be able to begin until the current contract expires May 1. The WGA began contract talks with Hollywood’s largest employers on March 20.
The sides were expected to take a two-week break starting today, but industry sources say there is likely to be some communication this week between guild negotiatators and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
The WGA had been expected to call for a strike authorization vote, which is a necessary layer of approval from members before guild leaders can all for a widespread strike. According to the guild’s charter, members need a certain amount of notice...

The Writers Guild is taking its first step toward a potential industry strike.
The union has set a strike authorization vote, with online polls opening April 11 at 8:30 p.m. and closing April 17 at 12 p.m., the guild announced to members on Monday. While a strike authorization vote does not ensure a writers strike will occur, it does gauge members’ willingness to cease work if the union deems a strike necessary. If a large portion of members supports a potential strike, that could improve writers’ leverage in their ongoing talks with the studios and streamers. As such, the guild was widely expected to call the vote at some point during a round of negotiations that many members consider pivotal for shoring up the future of their profession.

Dave “Lil Dicky” Burd returns to television with season 3 of his Fxx/Hulu series Dave. This season, Lil Dicky is on tour a quest for love and gets into plenty of genital-joke-filled shenanigans along the way. Featuring an incredibly talented cast and team of creatives behind the scenes who give the storytelling dimension, Dave Season 3 gets a 4.5 star review. Here’s what made the third season of the rapper’s Fxx series excellent.
‘Dave’ Season 3 is excellent | Showbiz Cheat Sheet ‘Dave’ cast reverts back to the basics in season 3
Season 1 of Dave was about Burd’s initial viral success and his quest to achieve long-lasting fame. In season 2, that fame quickly went to the rapper’s head. As a result, fame compromised some of the most important relationships in his life, especially his girlfriend Ally (Taylor Misiak).
Dave Season 3 strikes a balance between the versions of Lil Dicky we saw in the first two seasons.

Netflix has renewed its comedy Mo for a second season — but it will also be the show’s last.
Ending after two seasons is by design: The second installment will wrap up Palestinian refugee Mo Najjar’s (co-creator and star Mo Amer) journey to gain asylum in Houston.
“I’m thankful to continue to tell a universal story of struggle that relates to so many refugees and millions of underrepresented humans trying to be seen around the globe, and to be able to bring the people who loved and rooted for Mo Najjar along for the ride as we close this chapter of his story,” Amer said in a statement.
Mo, which Amer co-created with Ramy Youssef, premiered in August 2022 to widespread critical praise. Above all else, Mo allows [the title character] to just be himself — and it’s that self-assured voice that makes the series such a treat to watch,” The Hollywood Reporter critic Angie Han wrote.

Netflix has released the official trailer for “Mo,” the upcoming A24-produced comedy series from executive producers and creator Mohammed “Mo” Amer and Ramy Youssef. The series reunites Youssef with A24 after his Emmy-nominated work on the Hulu series “Ramy,” while bringing the comedy creator to Netflix for the first time. The series, which drops on the streaming platform August 24, is based on Amer’s own experiences as a Palestinian refugee growing up in Texas.
In “Mo,” Mo Najjar (Amer) straddles the line between two cultures, three languages and a ton of Bs as a Palestinian refugee constantly living one step away from asylum and on the path to U.S. citizenship. His family — including his resilient and spiritual mother, sister and older brother — flee to Houston, Texas. The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

“Dave” has been renewed for Season 3 at FX.
The show, based on the rise of hip-hop star Lil Dicky, stars Dave Burd as himself, as well as GaTa, Andrew Santino, Taylor Misiak, Travis Bennett and Christine Ko.
The show’s second season debuted last summer on Fxx, focusing on the aftermath of Dave’s relationship with Ally (Misiak) and conflicts with his hype man and creative partner GaTa, whose real-life struggle with bipolar disorder is portrayed on screen.
Season 2 ended on a high note, with GaTa joining Lil Dicky on stage at the VMAs for a euphoric duet of the song “We Good.”
Burd told Variety that he cast GaTa as himself in part because their relationship is “borderline impossible to replicate,” and he was “extremely confident” GaTa would be able to nail the humor of the series.

In the hourlong set he discusses pandemic politics, the stock market, the spread of Arab culture in the West — including hookah, hummus and the proliferations of bidets — cursing in Arabic, having two homes but no land, the need for greater civility and neighborliness and more. The Writers Guild of America Awards were handed during a virtual ceremony on Sunday, March 21. But don’t base your Oscar predictions on these kudos. Every year a slew of Oscar-nominated scripts are deemed ineligible for consideration here due to guild guidelines. Indeed, over the past 12 years only 80 of the Writers Guild of America Awards nominees have numbered among the 120 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Scroll down for the 2021 Writers Guild of America Awards winners list.
Our odds predict that “Nomadland” will win Best Adapted Screenplay winner at the Oscars but it was not allowed to compete at the WGA Awards. Neither was another Oscar contender in that category: “The Father.” The guild did match the academy three-for-five in this category, with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “One Night in Miami” and “The White Tiger” competing at both. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” round out the guild nominees.

The Writers Guild of America has rolled out what it’s touting as an enhanced online staffing and development platform to connect writers directly with showrunners, producers, and executives — aimed partly at members who don’t have agents.
The guild’s announcement about the year-old WGA Platform was notable in that it did not mention agents. It’s the latest in a long line of do-it-yourself initiatives for its members, many who were forced to fire their agents a year ago. Thursday’s message underlines the contention by guild leaders: Agents are not essential for members to obtain work.
The WGA Platform was launched in the wake of guild leaders telling their 15,000 members on April 12, 2019, that they were required to fire their agents if the agents had not agreed to WGA bans on packaging fees and affiliate production. The WGA West has debuted an enhanced online staffing and development platform to connect writers directly with showrunners, producers, and executives. The revamped WGA Platform features upgraded capabilities and an improved user experience to help writers find jobs. The guild sees it as a valuable tool to help writers get jobs, especially for those who have been without agents for the past year because of the WGA’s ongoing dispute with the major talent agencies.
“We started working on these enhancements well before the Covid-19 pandemic turned our industry upside down,” said Luvh Rakhe, a member of the guild’s board of directors. “The upgraded Platform will be a resource for members to stay connected even as we must physically separate. Down the road, we hope this contributes to the industry’s recovery because the work of writers will be critical to that.”

Leaders of the Writers Guild of America have told members that they may need to extend to current contract beyond its current May 1 expiration due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Members received the message on Tuesday afternoon, a day after Variety reported that the WGA was evaluating its options for conducting contract talks with Hollywood’s major studios that were to have started on March 23. The Writers Guild of America on Friday tapped more than 30 members to serve on the guild’s negotiating committee for the upcoming contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
The current three-year collective bargaining agreement, which covers most of the work done by WGA writers, is set to expire on May 1, 2020.
The looming contract negotiations have been a source of much anxiety in Hollywood as fears of a potential strike have bubbled in recent months. The negotiations are especially interesting for the WGA, which is still in a stand off with Hollywood talent agencies over how they are represented and the packaging fees agents collect for bundling talent together for networks and studios.

With Hollywood already fearing a strike, the Writers Guild of America has appointed more than two dozen members to serve on its negotiating committee for upcoming negotiations on its master contract.
The current three-year deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) expires on May 1. The guild’s seven-month standoff with agencies has heightened worries that the WGA will go on strike after the contract expires.
The WGA is required to seek approval of its “pattern of demands” before meeting with the companies. WGA West executive director David Young, who orchestrated the bitter 2007-08 strike, will serve as chief negotiator. Michele Mulroney, Shawn Ryan and Betsy Thomas are the co-chairs.

Oscar-winning screenwriter Tom Schulman has issued a strong endorsement for David Goodman for re-election as president of the Writers Guild of America West.
In an email to WGA West members Wednesday, Schulman took issue with the claim by the opposition Writers Forward Together slate that they have never seen the Guild so divided. He noted that more than 7,000 members voted in March to support the leadership’s Code of Conduct to ban agency packaging fees and affiliate ownership, while around 300 opposed.
“In my 33 years as a Guild member, I’ve never seen anything close to 7,000 members turn out to vote on anything,” he said. “Far from divided, we have unprecedented solidarity.”
Schulman won an Academy Award for “Dead Poets Society” and has credits on “Welcome to Mooseport” and “What About Bob.” He was vice president of the WGA West from 2009-2011, and served on the board of directors from 2005-...

Oscar-winning screenwriter Callie Khouri has issued a strong endorsement for David Goodman for re-election as president of the Writers Guild of America West.
“I have been a member of the WGA for twenty-nine years,” Khouri said in a email to members. “I’ve seen us win some and lose some. But after all these years I know one thing for sure; nothing makes a writer more vulnerable than a weak and fractured union. I am voting for experience, strength and unity.”
Khouri won an Academy Award for “Thelma & Louise” and created “Nashville,” which ran for six seasons. She said in the email Monday that the Writers Forward Together slate lacks the experience to lead. That slate, headed by Phyllis Nagy, is running on a platform that highlights the need for the WGA to resume negotiations with the major agencies. Ballots went out Aug. 29 to about 10,000 members with results announced Sept.

‘Thelma & Louise’ Scribe Callie Khouri Urges Writers To Re-Elect WGA West President David A. Goodman
With one week to go before WGA West ballots are counted, Oscar-winning screenwriter Callie Khouri is urging writers to re-elect the guild’s current leadership and “stand together” to win the WGA’s five-month battle with Hollywood’s talent agencies.
Khouri, who won the Oscar for Thelma & Louise, said in an email blast to the guild’s members Monday that the Forward Together opposition candidates – led by presidential candidate Phyllis Nagy – don’t have the experience needed to bring the agency campaign to a successful conclusion.
“I have served two terms on the board and on one negotiating committee, and I know from firsthand experience the level of research, preparation, and strategic planning required of the leadership and staff in a campaign like this one,” she wrote in support of WGA West president David A. Goodman and his team of running mates. “I take the writers of the Forward...

Candidates for the WGA West’s board of directors are almost evenly divided between those who want to stay the course and those who want a course correction in the guild’s ongoing fight with Hollywood’s talent agencies. All 17 candidates vying for eight open seats on the board make reasoned, and often elegant, arguments to support their positions. Mostly, they differ on tactics, not on goals, and all say they want what’s best for the union and its members.
With negotiations looming next year for a new film and TV contract, both sides of the debate are also concerned about the effects the agency campaign will have on those talks – whether it will leave the guild more united, or bitterly divided.
Here is a sampling of their views, as outlined in their official campaign statements. First we look at the running mates of WGA West president David A. Goodman,...

WGA West board member Luvh Rakhe has offered a history lesson on the power of solidarity – and the price that unions pay when they’re divided during strikes and collective actions.
Rakhe, who’s running for re-election as a supporter of the guild’s stance in its ongoing battle with Hollywood’s talent agencies, argues that writers should learn from Nick Counter, the late-president of management’s AMPTP, which he reunified in 1982 after the contentious breakup of the old Association of Motion Picture & Television Producers when Paramount and Universal split to form their own Alliance.
“Having been on the board for four years and the negotiating committee in 2017, I want to share a few lessons I’ve learned about how our collective power works,” Rakhe wrote today in a posting on the Medium social media platform. “I’ll start with an inspirational quote from Nick Counter, founder of the AMPTP.
