Tessa Ía, who broke out heading “After Lucía,” Michel Franco’s Cannes winning first feature, is set to star in “Hyperballad,” which offers what is proving one of the most potent mixtures in cutting-edge Latin American film: Genre, ambition, and a first-feature young woman director.
Directed by Alejandra Villalba García, “Hyperballad” (“Hiperbalada”) is lead produced by Hiperbalada, a production house lead by Villalba Garcñia and pic producer Carlos Paz.
It is co-produced by Mexico’s Piano, behind some of the boldest Mexican movies of recent years, such as the Alfonso Cuarón endorsed “We are the Flesh.” Its cosmopolitan co-production credits run from “Triangle of Sadness” to “Annette” and “Memoria.” Piano’s Julio Chavezmontes will also produce “Hyperballad.”
Sharpening the project’s contempo edge, “Hyperballad” portrays the digital world’s angst, psychosis and “phantasmagoria,” in producer Paz’s word.

Exclusive: Starzplay has cast Tessa Ía (De Brutas), Martín Saracho (Who Killed Sara?), and Lizeth Selene (Rebelde) as the leads for the Spanish-language dramedy series Yellow (w/t). Production officially kicked off on the project in Mexico City on Thursday.

Tessa Ia may come from a prominent family in the entertainment world, but that isn’t what she’s relying on. It’s her talent that has given her a career of her own and she’s excited to show the world what else she can do. Tessa is best-known for her role in the Mexican film, After Lucia, for which she was nominated for a Young Artist Award. Although most her work has been in Mexican productions, she was introduced to American viewers through her role in the Netflix series, Narcos: Mexico. After spending three seasons in Colombia, Netflix’s drug trafficking drama is heading to Mexico. Narcos: Mexico will feature new characters including roles played by Michael Pena and Diego Luna.
Netflix unveiled the first look at Pena and Luna’s characters today. Luna (right) is set to play Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo but he goes by only one name: Felix. He is the leader of the Guadalajara cartel, one of the biggest narcos in the history of Mexico and the founder of the modern Mexican drug trade. Quiet but bold, inscrutable but sharp-minded, to all appearances he is a benevolent leader, loyal to his friends, associates, and employees…but his ambition comes before all else.
Pena (above) will play Kiki Camarena, a family man and an undercover DEA agent who garnered valuable intel through a series of informants around Félix and his newly minted Guadalajara cartel, but found he had...

Michel Franco has built a reputation as an actor’s director, with his films featuring no shortage of unforgettable lead performances. Tim Roth’s creepy leading turn in Chronic comes to mind, as well as Tessa Ia in the underseen, worthy After Lucia. The central character in Franco’s latest film, April’s Daughter (Las Hijas De Abril), is April, the mother from hell, played by Emma Suárez. While she reached new attention with Pedro Almodóvar’s Julieta, her latest role confirms we’ll be hearing her name much more in the coming years.
April’s decision to visit her daughters in Puerto Vallarta takes both of them by surprise. Clara (Joanna Larequi) is quiet, depressed, and overweight, and her mom isn’t shy in telling her that either, even making her take laxatives to start a weight loss “program.” Her 17-year-old sister, Valeria (Ana Valeria Becerril), had an unexpected,...

★★★★☆ Unfathomably overlooked for UK theatrical exhibition, Mexican director Michel Franco's Cannes 2012 hit After Lucia (Después de Lucía) finally makes its way onto DVD this week through StudioCanal. Undeniably tough, yet one of the finest films made on the subject of teenage bullying seen in recent years, Franco's harrowing second feature is a sobering study on coercion and 'group-think', as a young girl's newly-acquired friendship group savagely turn on her following a drunken fumble with a handsome classmate. Featuring a standout turn from Tessa Ia, there's now no excuse for missing this brilliant drama.
Following the tragic death of his wife Lucia in a car accident, barrel-chested professional chef Roberto (Hernán Mendoza) and his 17-year-old daughter, Alejandra (the outstanding Ia), pack their things and move away for a fresh start in an unfamiliar city. Fast & Furious 6 on DVD is too much of a dubiously good thing, but Curzon Home Cinema's classics are well worth streaming
There was a time when two-hour-plus films were the preserve of languorous art cinema and porridgey Richard Attenborough-style biopics. Nowadays that's still true – though you can add the cheerfully petrol-brained Fast & Furious franchise to the list. Clocking in at 135 minutes, the rather ironically titled Fast & Furious 6 (Universal, 12) is the longest and most extravagantly ridiculous entry in a series you would expect to have started cutting some corners after 12 years. While you have to commend departing director Justin Lin for the generous abundance of steel-on-steel showdowns in this mostly London-set excursion for the now familiar band of speed freaks, the film may be too much of a dubiously good thing.
As much as its expertly choreographed action has been conceived for the big screen, Fast & Furious 6...

After Lucia
Written and directed by Michel Franco
Mexico/France, 2012
Following the death of his wife, Roberto (Hernán Mendoza) moves to Mexico City for a new beginning with his daughter Alejandra (Tessa Ia). Both struggle with the loss of Lucia in different ways, though both privately. A chef, Roberto occupies most of his time with the imminent launch of a new restaurant, drastically reducing possible time spent with his teenage daughter, widening the gap between them following a tragedy that, by all accounts suggested by the film, is still extremely recent.
Though they keep their suffering silent from each other, both Alejandra and her father are prone to lying in order to conceal their pain. One such example is how Roberto fails to tell his daughter about the abandoning of her mother’s car, in a long single take that opens the film, instead suggesting he has sold the vehicle...

Amir here. This year’s foreign language film race at the Oscars is so unusually packed with auteur names and festival successes that the typically middle-brow branch will really have to try hard not to get things right. Among this wealth of possibilities, one of the titles we haven’t heard much about is Mexico’s submission, After Lucia. I recently had the chance to watch the film and I was blown away by it. So much so that it now sits at the number one spot on my favourites of 2012.
It’s a confidently directed, outrageously frank study of bullying in the schools of Mexico through the experience of a teenager named Alejandra (brilliantly played by newcomer Tessa Ia). The richly conceived film reveals much while saying very little. Economically filmed and sharply edited, After Lucia is a devastating experience but an absolutely vital one. Yet, it’s too...

Title: After Lucia Director: Michel Franco Starring: Tessa Ia, Hernán Mendoza, Gonzalo Vega Jr. Bullying is becoming something of a trending topic within the past few years. From viral videos to documentaries, we have been reminded constantly of the dangers of bullying. It has always been a problem; it’s only now that anyone has taken notice. We’ve seen it done in T.V. shows and movies, but the difference is that while it was being shown, it’s never been explored in any detail. It was far easier to gloss over the issue than to deal with it honestly. Director Michel Franco’s film After Lucia attempts to cover this topic in such a [ Read More ]

★★★★☆ Screening at this year's London Film Festival is After Lucía (Después de Lucía, 2012), Mexico's official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar at next year's Academy Awards and Michel Franco's deeply harrowing follow-up to Daniel & Ana (2009). Franco's latest is a captivating, if not quite tortuous expose of school-yard bullying, told with horrifying intensity through the camera's unflinching gaze. Following the death of her mother, Alejandra (Tessa Ia) and her father (Hernan Mendoza) move to Mexico in order to begin a fresh new life. Starting a new school can be difficult for any child - yet Alejandra fits in instantly, even ingratiated to the 'popular' sect.

This trio will be joined by a trio of gems that recently premiered at Tiff in: Maja Miloš’ Clip, Gabriela Pichler’s Eat Sleep Die and Tobias Lindholm’s A Hijacking. The ladies have killed the fashion at the 65th annual Cannes Film Festival. Since last week, we’ve seen plunging necklines, cocktail dresses, minis and back-baring gowns. We’ve even seen a sexy pantsuit or two. The styles are split down the middle between short dresses and full-length gowns, with a handful of ladies opting for trains that recall the looks of silver-screen sirens. Celebs like Cassie, Tessa Ia, and Isabelle Huppert chose a more leggy look, with Cassie taking the sexy route while Tessa looked more pretty and prim. On the other hand, Rita Ora chose a ’50s Hollywood all-white gown and Kelly Brook chose to shine in a body-hugging full-length dress. New Bond girl Berenice Marlohe caught our eye with her shiny gold number, too. Check out which celebs kept it short and which of the ladies chose length at Cannes.

Charlize Theron on the reassembly line.

I think everybody likes a good Wtf movie — remember "Memento"? But director Guillermo Arriaga, who specializes in this sort of thing as a screenwriter ("Babel," "21 Grams"), has scrambled the narrative of "The Burning Plain," his first feature, to no very interesting purpose. It's a beautifully made film, with a couple of arresting performances; but it's so solemn it almost puts itself to sleep, and so pointlessly disjointed you kind of wish it would take a nap.
There's a nice tingle of inscrutability right at the beginning, when we meet Sylvia (Charlize Theron), the manager of a sleek cliff-top restaurant on the Oregon coast. Sylvia is clearly dragging around a heavy burden of woe, which she attempts to lighten by sleeping with any man who comes within hailing distance, and occasionally by gouging her thigh with jagged stones.
