For all the attention paid to acting races, the writing categories are equally competitive — if not more so. Among the contenders, there are two shows, one in drama and the other in the comedy category, with especially strong episodes worthy of consideration. The second season of FX’s “The Bear,” competing for the comedy trophy, overflowed with compelling storytelling, but only one episode, titled “Fishes,” was submitted. On the drama side, FX’s “Shōgun” was strong over the course of 10 episodes. However, the premiere, “Anjin,” is impossible to ignore.
Here, senior awards editor Clayton Davis and TV critic Alison Herman make the argument for each.

Louis C.K. is the subject of a new documentary titled Sorry/Not Sorry, which examines his comeback and gives a voice to the women who faced consequences after speaking out about his sexual misconduct. Watch the official trailer below.
Beyond going into how the comedian has bounced back from being accused of sexual misconduct by five women in 2017 and subsequently admitting the allegations were true, Sorry/Not Sorry gives space to Jen Kirkman, Abby Schachner, and Megan Koester to open up about their experiences with C.K.
In the trailer, Schachner engages in some dark humor, saying, “When I said I wanted to work with Louis C.K. I should have been more specific.”
Directed by Caroline Suh and Cara Mones, Sorry/Not Sorry also features interviews with the reporters who broke the story of C.K.’s misconduct — Melena Ryzik, Cara Buckley, and Jodi Kantor — alongside Comedy Cellar owner Noam Dworman, comedian Michael Ian Black,...

The Boys Season 4 reviews are coming out and the critics have a good opinion of the new season. However, the Rotten Tomatoes score might be a bummer for the penultimate season. The series saw its lowest Critics Score for a season yet with an 81% score as of writing. It is particularly concerning after the show’s third season scored the highest Tomatometer score in the series.

The Boys is one of the most popular superhero series in the world at this moment. The twisted take on the superhero genre, adapted from the comic book of the same name, became a major hit for Amazon Prime and a series that has pushed the boundaries of what can be shown on TV in more ways than one. After three successful seasons and a spin-off series, the fourth season of The Boys is coming back later this year, with the premiere scheduled for June 13, 2024, but some critics have already had the pleasure of seeing at least some of the scheduled episodes, and the first reactions are in. Based on what the initial reviews are claiming, the fourth season is more or less good, although the early scores are not as high as before.
As stated, the fourth season will officially air on Amazon Prime on June 13, 2024, and will consist of eight episodes,...

The Acolyte, Disney+’s newest Star Wars series, made an impressive debut with 4.8 million views on its first day. This premiere marks the streamer’s biggest series launch of 2024. To put this into perspective, Disney reported that it took five days for Ahsoka to reach 14 million views, averaging 2.8 million per day. In contrast, The Acolyte launched considerably stronger. Variety critic Alison Herman compared The Acolyte to both Andor and The Last Jedi for its bold approach to established lore. Her review highlighted the series’ action-packed scenes, mentioning it is propelled by plentiful action, much of it hand-to-hand combat...

“Tokyo Vice” — the crime drama that has run on Max for two seasons — has come to an end, at least for now.
The cancelation was confirmed Saturday at the PGA’s Produced By conference in Los Angeles during a panel discussion about the Ansel Elgort series and the Emmy-winning Max comedy “Hacks.” Max original programming chief Sarah Aubrey, along with “Tokyo Vice” creator and executive producer J.T. Rogers and director and executive producer Alan Poul, detailed the development of the series that was an elaborate production, much of it on the streets of Tokyo.
Aubrey characterized the decision to end after Season 2, which bowed in February, as something that was planned as a storytelling arc to allow the writers to build toward a clear end point. Rogers also characterized it as a mutual decision to support the storytelling.
“To know you’d have the two-season arc was really wonderful,” Rogers said.

Update: Though it initially appeared that “The Acolyte” may have had a stronger debut than 2023’s “Ahsoka,” Disney shared that the first episode of its latest Star Wars series reached 11.1 million views in its first five days — almost 3 million short of what “Ahsoka” achieved in the same amount of time. “The Acolyte” still represents Disney+’s biggest series premiere of 2024, however.
Previously: “The Acolyte,” Disney+’s newest Star Wars series, reached 4.8 million views in its first day of availability. This marks the streamer’s biggest series premiere of 2024, according to Disney.
An exact first-day viewership total isn’t available for “Ahsoka,” the most recent Star Wars series, though Disney did report that it took five days to reach 14 million views. That comes out to an average of 2.8 million viewers per day — 2 million below the launch of “The Acolyte,” though it’s likely that most of “Ahsoka’s” was concentrated in...

Disney’s latest Star Wars venture, ‘The Acolyte,’ stirred controversy well before its official debut. As most are aware, the series premiered on Disney+ on June 4, 2024, with two episodes. Now, critics and fans alike have the opportunity to weigh in on the highly-discussed show. As anticipated, critics have generally expressed satisfaction, though not overwhelmingly so, while fan reception remains notably critical, resulting in yet another polarizing addition to the Star Wars universe.
Even though critics have acknowledged that “The Acolyte” isn’t a top-tier Star Wars series after watching the initial episodes, they see significant potential in the show. Conversely, fans have labeled it as subpar, prompting speculation about whether this criticism stems from ideological review bombing or if critics harbor biases for unknown reasons.
To uncover the truth, we’ve watched the series and analyzed critics’ reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts an impressive 88% positive rating and is Certified Fresh.

Disney’s new Star Wars project, The Acolyte, quickly gained notoriety and was on track to become the most controversial Star Wars project of all time, even before its official premiere, as most of you will know by now. The series finally premiered on Disney+ on June 4, 2024, with two episodes, and the critics and fans will now finally be able to give their opinions on the talked-about series. As many expected, the critics are actually satisfied with the series, which has received mostly positive reviews, although not overwhelmingly like some other projects. On the other hand, the fans are – also as expected – very critical and we have, as it stands, another polarizing project in front of us.
And while even the critics have made it clear that The Acolyte is not the best Star Wars series out there, based on the first episodes, the series has a lot of potential.

As Paramount’s British series “A Gentleman in Moscow” hopes to break into the highly competitive limited series races, the show has submitted for 20 Primetime Emmys, including lead actor for star Ewan McGregor and supporting actress for Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
The eight-episode series follows an aristocrat, Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, who spends decades banished to an attic hotel room following the October Revolution after being sentenced to house arrest by a Bolshevik tribunal. Based on the 2016 novel by Amor Towles, the series was written by Ben Vanstone, who also serves as the executive producer and showrunner, and whose pilot episode titled “A Master of Circumstance” is submitted for consideration. The same episode will represent Sam Miller in the directing race, who has previously landed three Emmy bids: one for “Luther” in 2012 and two “I May Destroy You” in 2021.
The series received solid reviews from critics and boasted an impressive 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Will “The Gilded Age” find Emmys gold?
After its sophomore season, HBO’s historical drama “The Gilded Age” has entered the Emmy race with up to 37 nominations, Variety can exclusively reveal. This includes outstanding drama series, 15 main cast members and the season finale “In Terms of Winning and Losing,” which will represent director Michael Engler and scribe Julian Fellowes in their submissions.
The central couple, Bertha and George Russell, played by Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector, are contenders in the lead acting categories. Coon, an Emmy nominee for the third season of the anthology crime series “Fargo” in 2017, has a solid chance of picking up her second nom, competing against contenders Anna Sawai, Jennifer Aniston and Emma Stone. Already proving to be a big year for the actress, she could find herself in the Oscar race later this year for her remarkable performance in Azazel Jacobs’ family drama “His Three Daughters,...

Apple TV+ has canceled “Constellation” after one season.
The series starred Noomi Rapace as Jo, an astronaut who discovered that key pieces of her life seemed to be missing upon returning to Earth after a disaster in space, and set out on a quest to expose the truth about the hidden history of space travel and recover what she’d lost. Along with Rapace, the cast included James D’Arcy as Magnus, Julian Looman as Frederic, William Catlett as Paul, Barbara Sukowa as Irena and Rosie and Davina Coleman as Alice.
“Constellation” premiered in February and ran through March. “Shōgun” might be creating some drama at the Emmys.
Multiple industry insiders tell Variety that FX, the heavyweight contender in the Primetime Emmy race for outstanding limited or anthology series, is considering a bold move: shifting its submission for “Shōgun” to the drama series categories this year.
This strategic repositioning hints at the likely return of the protagonist, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (played by Hiroyuki Sanada). Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, the historical epic, celebrated for its intricate storytelling and marvelous world-building achievements, will now vie for accolades against heavy hitters like Netflix’s concluding saga “The Crown,” Apple’s intense office drama “The Morning Show,” and Prime Video’s gripping action video game adaptation “Fallout.”
FX declined to comment.

Clive Owen hopes to divide and conquer with his dual Emmy submissions this year.
With two competing limited series in the Emmys race, the star will be submitting his two acclaimed performances in AMC’s “Monsieur Spade” and Hulu’s “A Murder at the End of the World” in separate acting categories, Variety has learned exclusively.

Brie Larson won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Room” in 2016. Since then she has worked primarily in major franchises — appearing in “Avengers: Endgame” and a handful of other MCU projects as Captain Marvel and in the “Fast and Furious” film series. The actress hasn’t really found a project to show the talent she displayed in her tour de force performance in “Room” until now.
She stars in “Lessons in Chemistry,” the Apple TV+ show based on the novel of the same name by Bonnie Garmus. It follows Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a lab tech and chemist who uses her new job hosting a 1960s TV cooking show to educate housewives on scientific topics. The result is an entertaining period story in which Larson utilizes her distinct energy and impressive range to full effect. Larson injects Elizabeth with intelligence and heart but also zip, determination, and frustration in a well-rounded performance.

While Japanese actor cum martial artist Hiroyuki Sanada has been in multiple masterpieces before, probably none comes as close to the epic superhit dropping-soon series Shōgun. One of the most anticipated series of perhaps the entire decade, it is a historical drama set in the year 1600, based on the same name novel from 1975 by James Clavell.
FX’s Shōgun (2024)
What’s more, is that Shōgun has already earned a perfect 100% rating from critics on the Tomatometer and holds a whopping 9.4/10 score on IMDb as well. With a stunning rating as this and a storyline as brutal and violent as ever, fans are dubbing this series as the next and much better replacement for Game of Thrones.

Original “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto is once again making headlines for seemingly bashing the show’s fourth season, “True Detective: Night Country,” which was the first not to be created by Pizzolatto himself. “Night Country” hailed from Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes. Pizzolatto was still an executive producer on the show, but he distanced himself from “Night Country” during its run and generated significant backlash after reposting criticisms of the finale to his Instagram story.
Pizzolatto did not provide any personal commentary on the “True Detective: Night Country” finale. Instead, he chose to share negative reactions from other people who slammed the new season as “disrespectful and insulting” and a “hot mess.” He reposted several fans who were outraged with the finale and its “lazy, nonsensical” resolutions and claimed that Lopez had “butchered” his original writing given the connections between “Night Country” and the first season of “True Detective.

When Babe Paley meets Truman Capote for the first time in 1955 in the FX anthology series “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” it is the story of Ann Woodward that the famous writer tells in order to captivate her and her luminous friends. As Tom Hollander relishes one of Capote’s many rich monologues, we see Demi Moore as Woodward playing out two versions of the gruesome tale of the death of her husband – one in which she mistakenly shoots him, thinking he’s a burglar, the other in which she commits an act of intention homicide.
When, by the end of the premiere episode, Capote publishes his infamous excerpt from the unfinished novel “Answered Prayers” in “Esquire” in 1975, it is Woodward who takes her own life. While not one of the most prominent characters in the show, Woodward and her demise demonstrate the stakes of the feud at the heart of the series’ title.

Jon Stewart’s return to “The Daily Show” on Monday brought in 1.9 million viewers, marking the show’s biggest audience in more than five years.
Of those 1.9 million viewers, 930,000 tuned in via Comedy Central, while the rest were counted across simulcasts on CMT, Logo, MTV, MTV2, Paramount Network, Pop and TV Land. These figures come from Live + Same Day as reported by Nielsen.
It’s unsurprising that the episode would perform so well. “The Daily Show” has lacked any consistent presence since Trevor Noah exited as host at the end of 2022, and Stewart’s return to the post — which he left nearly a decade ago — adds a trusted voice back to the landscape of political commentary in a key election year, even if he’ll only be back at the desk on Mondays. “True Detective: Night Country” is the first season of the HBO anthology series not created by Nic Pizzolatto, who up until now had a writing credit on every episode across the show’s first three seasons. The show’s fourth season, “Night Country,” hails from Issa López, whose 2017 horror movie “Tigers Are Not Afraid” served as an industry breakthrough for the writer-director. López directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the new season.
While Pizzolatto is still an executive producer on the show, he has made it quite clear on social media amid “Night Country’s” run that he is not involved in any capacity with the fourth season of the show. He allegedly commented in since-deleted social media posts that some Season 4 plot points that connect to the show’s first season are “so stupid” and told one fan, “I certainly did not have any input on this story or anything else.

Donald Glover is the new Brad Pitt, at least when it comes to Prime Video’s eight-episode “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” series. Glover stars in and co-created the reimagining of Pitt’s 2005 action-comedy, which famously paired the A-list actor with Angelina Jolie.
“I’m not a big fan of remakes, so this was kind of a big deal to kind of take it on,” Glover told Entertainment Tonight at the show’s premiere. “Once I saw the original, I was like, ‘This is a good date movie.’ And I was like, ‘Maybe I could make a good date show out of it?’ Like, you know, something me and my wife could watch together.”
Glover confirmed that he “reached out to Brad” when he was first getting ready to take on their shared role of John Smith, but the Oscar winner did not have much wisdom to impart.

Christopher Nolan moderated a Q&a with Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie to discuss “The Curse,” the satirical comedy series starring Fielder and Emma Stone from Showtime and Paramount+, following a screening of the first episode. The “Oppenheimer” director said the show is “unlike anything I’ve ever seen on television before.”
“There are so few shows that come along that genuinely have no precedents,” Nolan said. “I mean, you’re going back to things like ‘Twin Peaks’ or ‘The Prisoner’ or Dennis Potter’s ‘Singing Detective’ — things like that. So you’re in an amazing space, and I can’t wait for audiences to catch up with the climax.”
Nolan also praised Fielder’s HBO series “The Rehearsal” and Safdie’s filmography with his brother Josh.

“True Detective: Night Country” showrunner Issa López took to X (formerly Twitter) the day after her season debuted on HBO and Max to urge fans to fight back against toxic trolls on Rotten Tomatoes. While the fourth season of the HBO crime series has earned glowing reviews (it boasts a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score from 73 reviews), there’s apparently a section of the fandom unhappy with the new direction of the show (the Rotten Tomatoes audience score is at 69%).
“So, if you liked last night’s [episode] of [‘True Detective: Night Country’], and have a Rotten Tomatoes account, maybe head over there and leave an audience review?” Lopez wrote to her followers. “The bros and hardcore fanboys of [Season 1] have made it a mission to drag the rating down, and it’s kind of sad, considering all the 5 star ones.”

Steve Martin recently took to Threads to defend stand-up comedian Jo Koy, who earned largely negative reviews for his gig hosting the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. Variety’s television critic Alison Herman wrote that Koy was “woefully unqualified” to be the host, while outlets such as Vanity Fair delivered even more scathing pans by calling the show a “near-total disaster.”
“I tip my hat to anyone who steps out on stage to host a live awards show,” wrote Martin, who is a hosting legend thanks to three stints emceeing the Academy Awards. “It’s a very difficult job and not for the squeamish. I know because I’m still throwing up from the last time I did it in 2010.”
Martin added, “So, congratulations to Jo Koy, who took on the toughest gig in show business, hit, missed, was light on his feet, and now has twenty minutes of new material for his stand up!

Jo Koy appeared on “GMA3: What You Need to Know” and reacted to the overwhelmingly negative reviews he received as the host of the 2024 Golden Globes. The comedian admitted that backlash to his hosting duties hurts a bit. Variety’s television critic Alison Herman panned Koy as “woefully unqualified” to be an awards show host.
“I had fun. You know, it was a moment that I’ll always remember,” Koy said the morning after the Globes. “It’s a tough room. It was a hard job, I’m not going to lie…I’d be lying if [I said] it doesn’t hurt. I hit a moment there where I was like, ‘Ah.’ Hosting is just a tough gig. Yes, I’m a stand-up comic but that hosting position it’s a different style. I kind of went in and did the writer’s thing. We had 10 days to write this monologue.

Almost three years to the day that “Fargo” wrapped its fourth installment, which starred Chris Rock and featured an acclaimed performance by future Oscar-nominee Jessie Buckley, its highly-anticipated fifth has finally arrived. Noah Hawley’s FX anthology series debuted almost a decade ago in 2014 and has been alternating between contemporary and period-set seasons. Since the last set of episodes took place in the 1950s and explored the war between Kansas City crime syndicates, the new season is set in 2019 and centers on Juno Temple’s character, whose happy home life conceals a dangerous past.
After its fourth installment failed to live up to the high expectations that the Emmy Award-winning series had previously set, this new season finds the show back as strong as ever. As of this writing, it has an 80 score on Metacritic, indicating “generally favorable” reviews. Even better, it has a perfect 100% freshness score on Rotten Tomatoes,...

Daniel Radcliffe almost made his directorial debut with the documentary “David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived,” about his “Harry Potter” stunt double who was left paralyzed after a tragic on-set accident.
At the London premiere of the HBO and Sky doc, Radcliffe Zoomed in from New York City — where he’s currently starring in the Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along” — for a Q&a with Holmes and director Dan Hartley, in which he revealed that he initially set out to helm the film himself.
“I had always wanted to do something about Dave because I wanted to share him with the world for the person that he is. And Dave’s natural humility meant that he was kind of unsure about that for a while — he wanted to make something broader about stunts in general. Brie Larson won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Room” in 2016 before landing the coveted role of Captain Marvel in the MCU. Since then, however, Larson has only really worked in major franchises — appearing in “Avengers: Endgame” and a handful of other MCU projects as well as featuring in the “Fast and Furious” film series. Larson hasn’t really found a project to show the talent she displayed in her tour de force performance in “Room.”
Until now with “Lessons in Chemistry.” The Apply TV+ show, which is streaming now, is based on the novel of the same name by Bonnie Garmus. It follows Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a lab tech and chemist who uses her new job hosting a 1960s TV cooking show to educate housewives on scientific topics. The result is an entertaining period story in which Larson utilizes her distinct energy and impressive range to full effect.

“Based on a True Story” has been renewed for Season 2 at Peacock.
The eight-episode first season of the dark comedy debuted on the streaming service in June. It starred Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina, Tom Bateman, Priscilla Quintana, Liana Liberato, Natalia Dyer, and more.
The show is a satire of the true crime genre with elements loosely inspired by real events. The official description of Season 1 states that it is about “Ava (Cuoco) and her husband Nathan (Messina), a down-on-their-luck couple, whose lives collide with an infamous serial killer terrorizing Los Angeles and seize a unique opportunity to capitalize on America’s obsession with true crime by making a podcast with the killer.”
Craig Rosenberg created the series and serves as showrunner and executive producer. Cuoco executive produces in addition to starring. Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan also executive produce via Aggregate Films, with Roxie Rodriguez of Aggregate and Melissa Blake co-executive producing.

Desean Terry, who portrayed former anchor Daniel Henderson on the first two seasons of Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show,” will not be part of Season 3. His contract was not picked up for the latest season of the show, Variety confirms.
On Thursday, the actor took to Instagram to share a video after receiving comments and questions about his whereabouts. While he didn’t mention the Apple TV+ series by name, Variety confirms that is what he is referring to.
“I did want to come on here and confirm for you all that no, you will not be seeing that character this season. I’m disappointed about it as well, but I’m really grateful that there are folks who reached out who felt seen by that role and narrative,” he says in the video, referencing the Black, gay anchor he portrayed. “I think in this moment of uncertainty in our union,...

The thing about “open secrets” is: Everyone knows what the secret is, but no one wants to acknowledge or talk about it. Not really, at least — if somebody’s peers and colleagues are all privy to some forbidden or socially unacceptable facts, and bringing it up forces them to reckon with some complicated feelings, then hey, why do we need to bring any of that up? For years, it was more or less an open secret within the comedy community that Louis C.K. had done things and said things that made female comedians feel uncomfortable.

“The Mary Tyler Moore Show” gave way to “Rhoda”; “Cheers” eventually brought us “Frasier.” Could the legacy of “And Just Like That” be the London-set dramedy “Samantha”?
Yes, it’s unlikely; a potential spinoff based on the ongoing adventures of Kim Cattrall’s character from “And Just Like That” and “Sex and the City” necessitates the participation of, well, Cattrall, who’s been very clear that her cameo on the “Ajlt” finale was a once-ever thing. But that cameo, too, once seemed unlikely-to-impossible, given the haze of bad feeling between Cattrall and her former castmates. And on “Samantha,” just like Frasier in Seattle, she’d get to make a whole new set of friends!
I’m being facetious, but only a little. I agree with my colleague Alison Herman that Samantha’s cameo was electric, and I’d go further: It provided a much-needed jolt for an episode of television that at times felt lugubrious.

As much as we like to try and predict the key Emmy races, some categories are more tough to figure out — and therefore, more interesting — than others. Outstanding drama series? Shhh, I think we have a pretty good hunch what’s going to win. This year’s acting categories have some obvious favorites. However, I would not be surprised by almost anything — particularly as performers have stopped campaigning in the wake of the SAG/AFTRA strike.
One of my favorite categories this year, however, is lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie. And here’s the top reason: This is the only acting category this year that features not a single previous Emmy winner among its nominees. As a matter of fact, half of them have never been nominated at all. Other categories come close. But lead actress in limited/anthology/movie is the only category where I can,...

Stephen Amell is clarifying his position.
Over the weekend, the “Heels” star appeared at Galaxycon in Raleigh, and he spoke about the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, sounding as though he was not supportive of the actors strike.

But now, Amell is setting out to affirm his support, indicating that his original comments were “misinterpreted.”

We all know soundbites can be taken out of context and I have too much respect for my fellow union members to not clarify the record.

Tom Holland isn’t letting bad reviews get in the way of promoting his critically-maligned Apple TV+ thriller series “The Crowded Room.” During a recent video interview with Unilad, Holland compared being in “The Crowded Room” to being a die-hard fan of England’s Tottenham Hotspur soccer team. In both cases, the Spider-Man actor has learned to be “very resilient.” Tottenham Hotspur has never won the Premiere League.
“I think being a Tottenham fan is somewhat like being in ‘The Crowded Room.’ It has taught me resilience,” Holland said. “Tottenham has never won anything and supporting them is incredibly difficult. It’s no secret my show has been so horribly reviewed, but I’m here today to promote the show and I’m still here. I’m very resilient. It’s a good quality.”

Tom Holland is clarifying recent remarks about taking a year-long acting break following the brutal filming of his Apple TV+ crime thriller series “The Crowded Room.” The “Spider-Man” star announced his acting break during an interview with “Extra” that hit online at the same time his new show was earning extremely negative reviews from television critics. Holland said on “Live With Kelly and Mark” that bad reviews had nothing to do with his decision to break from acting. The choice was made when “The Crowded Room” wrapped filming last year, meaning Holland is already months into his Hollywood hiatus.
“It’s so funny. Obviously, ‘The Crowded Room’ came out. We didn’t have very favorable reviews,” Holland said. “So the press story was that I have taken this year off because of the reviews. But I’m eight months into my year off. I’ve been chilling at home in London,...

“Beef” is shaping up to have a great year at this year’s Emmys. The searing, sizzling, sensational Netflix limited series is predicted to be nominated for at least five Emmys, according to our odds chart, but it could earn a whole lot more than that if key supporting players such as Joseph Lee get caught up in the sweep.
“Beef” follows Steven Yeun as Danny Cho and Ali Wong as Amy Lau — two people involved in an incident of road rage that they just can’t let go of. Over the course of the 10-episode series, the two get caught up in a deadly game of one-upmanship as they try to seek revenge and wreak havoc on each other’s lives, dragging themselves and those around them down along the way. One of those people is Lee’s George Nakai, Amy’s stay-at-home husband.

It’s (finally) official: Prime Video has greenlit Season 2 of “Citadel,” with Joe Russo set to direct the entire season.
The first season of the spy drama, which premiered in April, had a number of directors attached, including Jessica Yu and Newton Thomas Sigel as well as Anthony Russo and Joe Russo on unspecified episodes. On Season 2, however, it will be solely Joe Russo on directing duties, with David Weil returning as showrunner.
Prime Video has also revealed that its big-budget original — which stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and features Lesley Manville and Stanley Tucci — is its second most-watched new original series outside the U.S. behind “Rings of Power” and its fourth most-watched program worldwide.
All episodes of Season 1 will land on Prime Video on Friday. Meanwhile, the series premiere will be made free to stream without membership on both Prime Video and the ad-supported Freevee for a month in the U.

“Mrs. Davis” may be one of the most surprising and unconventional new series of the spring — and now it’s making a surprising and unconventional move in the Emmy race as well. As the Television Academy deadline for category submissions ends today, Peacock has decided to make a last-minute shift and move the series into the limited/anthology series categories.
Betty Gilpin stars in “Mrs. Davis” as Simone, a sometimes nun who takes on her nemesis, the artificial intelligence being known only as “Mrs. Davis,” and strikes a deal with the algorithm — which promises to shut down if Simone finds and destroys the holy grail. This exploration of faith and technology comes from executive producers Tara Hernandez (“The Big Bang Theory”) and Damon Lindelof (“The Leftovers”).

Warning: This story contains mild spoilers for “Beef,” available to watch on Netflix now.
Lee Sung Jin, the creator and showrunner of Netflix’s “Beef,” first worked with Steven Yeun and Ali Wong on the animated series “Tuca & Bertie.” But their latest collaboration sees the three reunite to craft a Netflix show along an A24 sensibility. “Beef,” which dropped on the streaming service on Apr. 6, traces the intersecting lives of Yeun’s Danny and Wong’s Amy after the two engage in a vitriolic road rage incident that sets both on a collision course to chaos. “Amy and Danny may differ in gender, class and career path, but they share a self-destructive nihilism that each seems to recognize in the other, even if they can’t articulate it,” writes Variety TV critic Alison Herman.

Twitter’s verification flag has changed once again, making legacy verified accounts and Twitter Blue subscribers virtually indistinguishable — and harder to publicly shame. The lumping together of blue checks comes days after Twitter CEO Elon Musk announced the company would begin phasing out “legacy” verified checkmarks beginning on April 1.
Before Sunday, if a user clicked on someone’s verified blue check, an information flag would appear. Those verified before Twitter Blue was released would display the words, “This account is verified because it’s notable in government, news, entertainment, or another designated category.

Most filmmakers get bit by the movie bug early in life. They walk out of "Star Wars," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," or "Jurassic Park," and, like getting off a great amusement park ride, are desperate to get back in line to relive the experience all over again. At some point, they have to go home. That's where the dreaming starts. They imagine the further adventures of their big screen heroes, and, eventually, craft whole universes of their own. Sure, they'd love to add their own chapter to the "Indiana Jones" films, but what they really want is to create their own Indiana Jones. As they get older and discover other genres like Westerns, musicals, and gangster flicks, they study their tropes and unavoidably put their own spin on them.
The best filmmakers are the ones who seek not to replicate their formative experiences, but to work within different genres on their own terms.
