It’s a hit! A palpable hit! “Merrily We Roll Along” cleaned up at the 2024 Tony Awards, winning the coveted Best Revival of a Musical trophy. “Merrily” is now the fifth musical from composer Stephen Sondheim to win this revival category. That ties the record of Oscar Hammerstein II, who has also seen five of his tuners win this race, meaning that the works of these two theater legends have prevailed more than any other writers in this category.
Sondheim and Hammerstein haven’t picked up any actual Tony Awards themselves for these winning revivals. The Best Revival of a Musical Tony, like the other production categories, is awarded to a show’s producers.
Other Sondheim productions that have prevailed in Best Revival of a Musical category are “Into the Woods” (2002), “Assassins” (2004), and “Company” (for both the 2007 and 2022 productions). Additionally, the 1989 production of “Gypsy” starring Tyne Daly, won a combined...

Buckle up because the Summer movie season kicks into high gear with a brand-new installment of a big loud action franchise. This one goes back 29 years, so it’s a few decades behind the recent Furiosa which is the latest entry of a series that’s now 45 years old. Oddly this weekend’s big release marks only four years since the previous, the shortest turn-around time of the four. Yes, this makes for a quartet centered around a buddy-cop duo that’s well into middle age but still embraces a youthful moniker in Bad Boys: Ride Or Die.
As this adventure begins, detectives Mike Lowery (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are racking up the moving violations as they speed through the sun-baked streets of Miami. But they’re not in pursuit of a “perp”. No, it’s Mike’s wedding day, to his beautiful physical therapist Christine (Melanie Liburd...

After taking us into A Quiet Place in two box office hits (with a prequel arriving very soon), actor/director/writer John Krasinski now guides us into a fairy noisy place, namely the inner life and fantasies of children. And going from sci-fi thrills to whimsey is quite the “lane change”, one that could end in disaster if not properly planned. Luckily he’s crafted a story and has enlisted a talented cast in front of the camera and the microphone. Yes, this is perhaps the most ambitious cartoon/live-action feature since the pairing of private eye Eddie Valiant and Roger Rabbit. And since it uses computer-generated “beasties” (rather than the 2-D classic style), Krasinski is touting it as a “live-action Pixar flick” (quite a goal). And he’s really putting those tech wizards to work in showing us the often unseen children’s side-kick, the invisible friend, here shortened to If.

Rajkumar Hirani’s Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Dunki’ is a comedy-drama film based on ‘donkey flights’ (termed as ‘dunki’ in Punjabi), an illegal immigration activity used for unauthorized entry into countries like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This method has gained notoriety among migrants, particularly those from Indian states such as Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat. Apparently the title of the film only works as its curiosity factor, as the film has nothing much about the ‘Dunki’ business and touches just the surface!
‘Dunki’ marks Shah Rukh Khan’s maiden collaboration with Raj Kumar Hirani, who had (reportedly) earlier offered him roles in his films Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003) and 3 Idiots (2009) which Srk had rejected. Dunki is Taapsee Pannu’s first onscreen collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan whose Red Chillies Entertainment had earlier produced Taapsee starrer ‘Badla’.

On the heels of the Writers Guild of America’s tentative deal, ABC confirmed the season will premiere as originally scheduled.
Dancing With the Stars will samba onto fans’ screens as originally planned.
Following Sunday’s news that the Writers Guild of America has struck a tentative deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to end the 146-day-long writers’ strike, ABC confirmed on Monday that the ballroom competition will premiere as originally scheduled on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
The news marks a quick change from last week, when Et learned that ABC was putting in place plans to postpone Tuesday’s season 32 premiere amid the then-ongoing strike.

“The Color Purple” will compete at the Golden Globes in comedy/musical, Gold Derby can exclusively confirm.
Fantasia Barrino, who plays Celie, will be the sole lead acting contender. The film, scheduled to open Christmas Day, also stars Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Louis Gossett Jr., H.E.R., Ciara, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi and Halle Bailey.
The categorization, of course, is hardly a surprise, since the movie is an adaptation of the hit 2005 Broadway musical, which was based on Alice Walker‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and Steven Spielberg‘s 1985 film adaptation. The original musical received 11 Tony nominations, including Best Musical, and won Best Actress in a Musical for Lachanze. The 2015 revival won Best Revival of a Musical and Best Actress in a Musical for Cynthia Erivo, and earned a Best Featured Actress in a Musical bid for Brooks, who reprises her role as Sofia in the upcoming film.

Two true-life sports movies opening on the same weekend! Oh yeah, it was bound to happen but we’re taking a big detour (hmm), maybe even a U-turn from the video game F1 flick. For one thing. this one is set squarely in the past, before Pong was a staple, way back in the splashy 1970s, after a brief stop in the sensational ’60s. Oh, and this concerns the American pastime (as in hot dogs and apple pie), in the tradition of The Natural and The Rookie (with which it shares a star). Now the title doesn’t refer to the pitcher’s mound, but rather to the obstacles its focus must face (perhaps closer to a steep mountain). And since it’s also the last name of the family in this faith-based drama it’s simply The Hill.

Kohn’s Corner is a weekly column about the challenges and opportunities of sustaining American film culture.
After years of blockbuster production driven by prefabricated superhero fandom, the summer of Barbenheimer is an unexpected delight. “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” show the potential for festival-anointed auteurs to worm their way into popular culture with smart and innovative projects. With “Barbie” already crossing half a billion dollars at the global box office and “Oppenheimer” at a formidable $300 million, the joint success of these very different movies seems to be telling Hollywood… something.
The most obvious takeaway from Barbenheimer: Audiences want originality and invention, not endless sequels and variations on what came before. Ok, let’s assume most studio bosses grasp this fundamental point. There’s more to it that. These films speak to a broader set of values and opportunities for studios to consider as they develop more movies that fickle audiences will consider worth their time.

And the Summer of product adaptations and remakes continues! Last weekend Barbie just about blew the doors off the box office and the multiplex in a virtual tsunami of pink perfection. Hey, if a toy can revive the ticket sale doldrums, why not a flick based on a ride from the Disney theme parks? After all, those Caribbean Pirates spurred quite a profitable “tentpole” for the studio. But then there were costly flops like Tomorrowland and who remembers The Country Bears (maybe they just needed that “nose candy”). Well, this concept was exploited nearly twenty years ago, so this is also, technically, a remake (without any of the main human characters from the first time). Perhaps the modest success of the other remake a few months ago, The Little Mermaid, is lifting the “ahem” spirits of the mouse house. So, even though Halloween is months away, are filmgoers in the...

If the television universe had a better sense of poetry, Netflix’s three-part Bill Russell documentary and Showtime’s three-part Wilt Chamberlain documentary would have come out the same day. The Chamberlain doc would have gotten better ratings, but the Russell doc would have received better reviews, and then we would have discussed the relative merits of each type of success and come to the conclusion that judging either of them exclusively on that one measurement was reductive.
Instead, Sam Pollard’s Bill Russell: Legend premiered back in February, while Rob Ford and Christopher Dillon’s Goliath, about Chamberlain, will air through the rest of July on Showtime and associated platforms.
While the two documentaries about contenders for basketball greatest-of-all-time status are both solidly made examinations of their complicated subjects, neither is even the recent Goat when it comes to multi-parters about outspoken NBA centers. Steve James’ Bill Walton series for ESPN holds that crown.

In the short but exhilarating story of NewJeans, there’s one date that stands out above all the rest: July 22, 2022, the day they went from being unknown teens to one of the buzziest groups in the world. “I knew that it would be a date of excitement for the rest of my life,” says Minji, one of NewJeans’ five members. “I was so happy, and nervous, too.” Her fellow member Haerin remembers waiting for the video for their debut single, “Attention,” to drop: “All we could think about was the debut.

Spidey’s still got it. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” a sequel to Sony’s 2018 Oscar-winning “Into the Spider-Verse,” collected $120 million in its box office debut — a towering figure that’s more than triple the original’s opening weekend.
The first film, one of the intial cinematic introductions to the multiverse, started with a softer $34.4 million but turned into a word-of-mouth sensation during its theatrical run, which ended with $190 million in North America and $384 million globally. Now, thanks to the goodwill from “Into the Spider-Verse” and quality to match the hype, the follow-up film has managed to become a blockbuster from the jump. Already, “Across the Spider-Verse” has generated $208 million worldwide, including $88.1 million at the international box office. It cost $100 million.
“It’s really rare that sequels increase their box office,” says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. “Usually, the law of diminishing returns applies.”

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
With Amityville Vanishing Point unavailable to stream or buy in Canada, I’ve had to leap frog over it and go directly to 2016’s The Amityville Legacy (aka Amityville Toybox).
Co-written and co-directed by Dustin Ferguson and Mike Johnson (file away the former: he’ll return several times in the future), the 15th Amityville film is another low-budget, independent effort. All of the characters have the same first name as the actor playing them, and the performances are often amateurish. Namely the film’s visual aesthetic is flat and the audio quality is poor, particularly in early scenes set in cars. The plot recycles the events of both the original and the remake, with a father who goes mad and kills his family,...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we reassess the unsettled limited series races.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! If the first Monday in May is reserved for the Met Gala, I can only assume the first Friday in May is all about the 2023 limited series Emmy race. That classification is maybe the most chaotic of the main Emmys races this year — we’re long past the days of “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Mare of Easttown.” At the moment, according to our odds, “Monster,” “Black Bird,” “Beef,” “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” “White House Plumbers” and “Daisy Jones & the Six” make up the expected list of limited series nominees. Looking at that list, I’m left with one thought: Sure? I’m a flagship member of the “Fleishman...

Some of the biggest names of Broadway (and Hollywood) won’t be receiving those phone calls of congratulations today as this morning’s Tony Awards nominations included more than a few surprising — or, in some cases, not surprising — omissions.
Aaron Sorkin, whose rewritten book for the classic musical Camelot was not beloved by critics, didn’t get any Tony approval today. His revisions were extensive enough to make him eligible in the Best Book of a Musical category, but he is not among the nominees.
As for lead actors and actresses, Oscar Isaac and Rachel Brosnahan, the bold-name stars of The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window, were overlooked, as was The Piano Lesson‘s John David Washington and Pictures From Home‘s Nathan Lane. Marcel Spears, the star of the acclaimed Fat Ham, was not nominated, nor was Olivier Award winner Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi). Jefferson Mays, so...

In a Broadway season bursting at the seams with critically-acclaimed production — 38 musicals, plays, and revivals opened during the 2022-2023 eligibility window — it is no surprise that the 40 Tony Awards nominators caught theatre aficionados off guard with some of their choices.
In particular, two new plays exceeded our nominations expectations. Ahead of the announcement this morning, our official odds predicted only a single nomination for the Pulitzer Prize-winner “Cost of Living” for Katy Sullivan in Featured Actress — although many of our savvy editors and experts knew this would break through in Best Play. But few anticipated it would earn five bids, including Director for Jo Bonney, who ranked in 12th place with only 11 folks predicting her, Kara Young for Featured Actress in ninth place and David Zayas for Featured Actor in eighth place.

American Idol’s April 30 episode saw the reveal of the show’s top 10 contestants, and while some were thrilled with who went through, others were disappointed in the two contestants left behind. Regardless, the judges loved every performance. The contestants took on advice from former Idol star Adam Lambert, who has made quite a career for himself and credited the show for giving him his start. The singers sang rock and roll hits that fit their voice, with one contestant’s performance even making Luke Bryan cry.

All good things must come to an end.
After serving more than two decades as president of the National Association of Theatre Owners, John Fithian is departing the post on May 1 when he turns over the job to Michael P. O’Leary. He leaves on a high note as the box office shows signs of moving beyond the Covid-19 crisis after a number of fits and starts.
“One of the key themes that will emerge this week is optimism. Our industry is off to an incredible start in 2023. And why are we off to such a great start? Well, the explanation is a simple one: we have more movies to play,” Fithian said in his final state-of-the industry speech at CinemaCon, the marquee show hosted by NATO. “In 2022, we had 71 movies open on 2,000+ screens. This year, we will have more than 100, and new titles are being added at a steady place.

When “Summer of Soul” sold for $15 million out of the 2021 pandemic-virtual Sundance Film Festival, we saw the peak of the documentary boom. Questlove’s feature debut was a Sundance record, but it wasn’t alone; other Sundance docs like “Fire of Love” and “Flee” sold for high-seven figures.
Today, Sundance 2023 premiere “It’s Only Life After All,” which included its subjects the Indigo Girls performing at the festival’s Opening Night fundraiser, has yet to find a buyer. Ditto “Going Varsity in Mariachi,” “The Disappearance of Shere Hite,” or Doug Liman’s Brett Kavanaugh doc “Justice.”
Sundance also had documentaries that came with distribution, like Hulu’s “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” Amazon’s “Judy Blume Forever,” and Apple’s “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie.” However, if you’re looking for documentaries that aren’t based on high-recognition IP, or concepts that can’t be parceled into irresistible, cliff-hanging episodes — well,...

Udine Far East Film Festival is back with a record line-up to celebrate its 25th edition. 78 films, 14 countries, 9 world premieres – Golden Mulberry for Lifetime Achievement to Baisho Chieko – On the red carpet also Johnnie To, Watanabe Hirobumi and Jang Sun-woo.
If there are 78 films (record number!) and they come from 14 countries, it should certainly be emphasized that the line-up includes 15 women directors and 12 newcomers. In brief, the 2023 selection aims to restore great complexity more than ever of Asia. A selection that combines the recent past with today, seamlessly, among different communities, different expectations and choices of life, languages and dialects, politics, religions, habits, inclinations, beliefs, myths and legends and, last but not least, different gender identities. A selection that tells in real time how the cinematography of East and Southeast Asia have re-emerged from the sad period of the pandemic, not all in the same way, and not all with the same results.

Do you recall what kind of viewing was all the rage when most of us were stuck indoors during the big pandemic a couple of years ago? Well, aside from a fictional fable of a chess whiz, it was true crime streaming TV. Of course, many folks still love to binge these often multipart documentaries. And one has become a docudrama, about that Tiger King. A good number of them concern that thriller staple of the last three or four decades, the serial killer. So when did this “boogeyman” enter the zeitgeist? You could go all the way back to Jack the Ripper. Well, this new film is about his American cousin who was a terror of the early 1960s.
