Fewer films by female directors were selected for this year’s programme
Fewer female feature directors were selected for this year’s Locarno programme compared to the 2022 edition according to figures presented by artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro at an event held by the Swiss Women’s Audiovisual Network (Swan).
The event was held to mark the fifth anniversary of Locarno’s signing of the Programming Pledge for Parity and Inclusion in Cinema Festivals. In August 2018, Locarno became the first A-category festival after Cannes to make a commitment to ensure greater gender equality and inclusion in its programming.

Finland’s leading film festival Love & Anarchy is ready to celebrate its 35th edition, free of Covid restrictions and finally able to focus on the films and the audience, says executive director Anna Möttölä in Helsinki. But it has been a bittersweet time, marked by the loss of Jean-Luc Godard and Lina Wertmüller back in December, whose 1973 film gave the event its name.
While Wertmüller will be celebrated with a screening of “Seven Beauties,” another tragedy is on the team’s mind: the sudden death of Charlbi Dean, the star of Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner – and the festival’s opening film – “Triangle of Sadness.”
“It will be a memorial screening,” says artistic director Pekka Lanerva. Dean’s co-star, Zlatko Burić, is expected to attend.

Giona A. Nazzaro was today appointed as the new Artistic Director of Switzerland’s historic Locarno Film Festival. He will be tasked with trying to bounce back the event, one of the key European summer film fests, from a pandemic-disrupted year in 2020.
Deadline got on the phone with Nazzaro, who joins from his role at the Venice Film Festival sidebar Critics’ Week, to hear about his plans for Locarno’s 74th edition in August 2021. He says re-opening the iconic Piazza Grande – said to be the largest open-air screening room in the world – will be a top priority after it was closed this year, but notes the team are game-planning for potential further disruption. Nazzaro also tells us about his love for American movies such as The Fast And The Furious franchise, and why he thinks the streaming services are “integral” to the international industry.
Deadline: Let me start by saying congratulations on the new gig.

With today’s anxiously awaited announcement of the first wave of films for the 43rd annual Toronto International Film Festival, the first serious footprint on the upcoming Oscar season has been made.
Even though the September 6-16 event comes after Venice and Telluride a week earlier, Tiff is enormously influential in terms of helping to set the table for a slew of awards contenders, and if this initial list of 17 Galas and 30 Special Presentations is any indication, the season appears to be promising a lot of films dealing with heavy family issues, humanist dramas, political and hot-button issue movies and highly personal films like If Beale Street Could Talk, Barry Jenkins’ first effort since the Oscar-winning Moonlight. There’s not a whole lot of lighter fare on tap — so far at least.

The National Union of Italian Film Critics has revealed its picks for the Venice Critics’ Week section it organizes parallel to the Venice Film Festival. Seven debut features have been set this year in competition for the Audience Award. Each will also be eligible for the Lion of the Future Luigi De Laurentiis Award that’s handed out at the main prize ceremony and goes to a first film from across all sections. It comes with a $100K purse.
Opening the section out of competition this year is Indian fantasy pic Tumbbad from Eros International and directors Rahi Anil Barve and Adesh Prasad, while closing duties belong to Tunisian horror movie Dachra from Abdelhamid Bouchnak. Other highlights include Sudanese comedy A Kasha; Syrian war documentary Still Recording; Montenegro’s first entry You Have The Night; and experimental horror pic M, the debut by Finnish pop star Anna Eriksson that’s...
