Since the Kickstarter campaign for the financing of a demo reel for the David Fincher movie adaptation of Eric Powell's comic book exceeded its goal last November the principal source of information released has been through the movie blog site accessible to all sponsors. Regular monthly updates have included glimpses of model sheets and other visuals in development for the project along with status updates on the progress of the demo reel over at Blur Studios. More recently, a segment of the reel featuring the 'animatic' version of a scene from the movie was posted at the end of July. Titled 'Meeting of the Mobs' it runs approximately two minutes in length and is listed as the sixteenth segment, presumably in the complete demo reel. Reference made by another participant may also have been made in the following Twitter post made by Southern California post-production studio...

Comic Con hasn’t been strictly superheroes in a long, long time. We have scoured the schedule for this year’s event and have pulled out the dark, the bloody, the monstrous, and the ghostly panels that look to be right up FEARnet readers’s alley.
Paranormal Passion Panel
Authors discuss the inclusion of romantic elements in their action-packed novels. Protagonists must battle the forces of evil while trying to keep the world (and often their lovers) safe from destruction. Maryelizabeth Hart of Mysterious Galaxy leads a discussion with Comic-Con special guest Christine Feehan (The Dark Series), Claudia Gray (Spellcaster), Aprilynne Pike (Earthbound), Lauren Kate (The Fallen Novels), Kendare Blake (Antigoddess), and Magnus Flyte (City of Dark Magic).

Before Veronica Mars got its massive movie Kickstarter, Goon creator Eric Powell used the service to help kickstart the big screen adaptation of his comic book into a feature film. We all can't wait to see it but we haven't heard much since the Kickstarter campaign, however things are apparently progressing. Powell explains that Clancy Brown and Paul Giamatti are still attached to the project saying, "Everyone who was originally attached is still attached."
The money raised from the Kickstarter campaign is being used to produce a rough early animatic version of the full feature film. Now Powell is working with producer David Fincher and Blur Studios to make it happen. BadTaste.it caught up with Powell at Cartoomics 2013 where they asked him about the film project, and although it's not really a big update he does say they are working on it, they have a script, and it's currently going through the storyboard process.

Eric Powell is "cautiously optimistic" about the future of a Goon film. The cartoonist has discussed the process of finding funding for a David Fincher-helmed project. Speaking to The Tennessean, he addressed the challenges of selling an adult animated film to the studios, especially one with no previous films it can be compared to. "They can't say, 'Oh, this is like Toy Story 2'," he said. "It's animated work that's not geared toward little kids. I don't (more)...

Lance Henriksen has a new project to unveil, and it's not what you might think. We spoke with him not about a new film or television show; he's now a comic book writer and is proud to announce his upcoming title To Hell You Ride. Co-writer Joseph Maddrey also joined our chat.
Henriksen and Maddrey collaborated previously and have reconnected for the supernatural comic book To Hell You Ride. "Joe Maddrey and I wrote a book together, my biography, and in it we got comic book artists to do drawings of some of my movies, whatever movie they wanted to do," Henriksen said. "Suddenly we were plugged into the comic book world with (Bill) Sienkiewicz and (Mike) Mignola and Tim Bradstreet and Eric Powell and Tim Mandrake. All these guys are the best in the business and they wanted to do the illustrations for the autobiography, and we didn't want...

So, remember when we interviewed Goon creator Eric Powell and posted the (Awesome) test footage for a possible Goon movie? That movie has a Kickstarter campaign for its story reel—an essential tool for pitching a film to studios—and it now only has four days left to be funded. Powell, David Fincher, and Blur Studios keep upping the donation incentives, providing everything from production art to t-shirts to a bundle of Goon comics for those of you not yet “in-the-know” about this fantastic indie series. It’s about an angsty thug bashing his way through a mythic era of history similar to the Great Depression… except with monsters. There’s even an issue dedicated to the Goon and his sidekick Frankie side-stepping prohibition with bathtub gin.
Plus, there are zombies. Lots of them. Did we mention that?

You wanna see a friggin' "Goon" movie? Then you better be ready to friggin' pay! Blur Studios has launched a Kickstarter campaign to get funding for their long awaited adaptation of Eric Powell's Dark Horse series, and our friends at MTV Geek have a big, long interview with the team's Tim Miller and Jeff Fowler all about their plans.
"The same reason it makes a great comic book is the same reason it would make a great film," Fowler tells MTV Geek. "There's nothing out there like it. Eric's world doesn't have any kind of parallel in comics or film."
Read the full interview with Miller and Fowler over here!

We here at Cinema Blend often talk of projects trapped in development hell, be it Ghostbusters IIIor the long awaited Janis Joplin biopic, but one that we find ourselves cheering on regularly is the comic book movie Deadpool. While the film has many pieces already in place - including a star (Ryan Reynolds), a script (written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese) and a director (Tim Miller) - 20th Century has never seemed to be 100% committed to it, despite loud fan outcry. When I spoke with producer Lauren Shuler Donner about the project in 2011, she told me that they would have an idea about its future by the end of the year. Obviously that time has come and pass, but apparently hope is still alive for the movie. Speaking on behalf of Blur Studios and answering fan's questions about the Kickstarter that just launched for the adaptation of Eric Powell...

Kickstarter, a fundraising site designed to help artists raise money for projects they can't afford, has been a fantastic resource for young filmmakers who have a great idea for a movie but lack the cash to get it done. Naturally it's a bit rarer to see professionals creating listings on the site, as studios are typically happy to give money to talented people with an established record, but apparently the animated comic book adaptation of Eric Powell's Goon hasn't been having the greatest luck in those circles, so it's going to the public. The project, which is being produced by David Fincher, has opened its own Kickstarter page in hopes of raising $400,000 by Sunday November 11th at 8:35am Est. In just a few hours the page has already gotten 561 backers and raised $34,662. The money will go towards the beginning of the filmmaking process and will allow the filmmakers...

In honor of the release of Christopher Golden's Joe Golem and the Drowning City in limited edition hardcover on October 3 and Baltimore: The Play, his collaboration with Mike Mignola, on November 21, Dark Horse editor Scott Allie interviewed the award-winning author for us.
Topics covered in the interview include Golden's interpretation of the term "dark fantasy," his upcoming project with True Blood author Charlaine Harris, vampires in our current culture, his influences, the scariest thing he's written, and Lots more. Check it out below, and look for more guest blogs from Scott Allie over the coming weeks.
Scott Allie: Can you explain “dark fantasy” to me?
Christopher Golden: The easy approach would be to say it's a merger of horror and fantasy, but that's not always true. For me, dark fantasy is fantasy in which nasty things happen. For people who've read my original novels, dark fantasy would be easy to recognize.

There are a number of popular amped up fairy tale projects out there right now. One need look no further than NBC's "Grimm" or ABC's "Once Upon a Time." However, Zenescope Entertainment's comic series Grimm Fairy Tales is about to take things to a whole new level.
"Metalocalypse" director Jon Schnepp is teaming with Titmouse Animation Studio, Benjamin Jackendoff and Zenescope to create an animated project based on the long running Grimm Fairy Tales comic book series. "Ben and I had done a couple of horror shorts over the last two years," Schnepp said. "He started working for a company called Zenescope and was like, 'Yo, dude, you've gotta check out this company. I had been doing 'Metalocalypse' for eight years and wanted to do something on my own that's like a Heavy Metal movie, so I started writing this horror anthology movie. Ben was like, 'You...

Pretty much the comic book Oscars, the 2012 nominations for the Eisner awards have been announced. There is quite are large showing from Marvel in the superhero department, not so much from DC. Surprising, considering the company’s high profile New 52 relaunch. Save for Jeff Lemire’s nomination for Best Writer, most of DC’s nomination are pre-relaunch, or from their Vertigo imprint which has been left untouched by the New 52. The nominations are usually as controversial as the Oscars, with books and whole companies being left out, much to fans, sometimes, anger and confusion.
A full list of the nominations are below, courtesy of Bleeding Cool, and the award will take place at this years San Diego Comic Con.

The ceremony is better known as the Eisner Awards which is now heading into its 24th year with some great talent in the running. One of the most loved titles in this year’s nominee list is Marvel’s Daredevil, picking up 6 nominations that include Best Continuing Series, Best Single Issue, Best Writer (Mark Waid), Best Cover Artist (Marcos Martin), and Best Penciller/Inker Team Marcos Martin, and Paolo Rivera/Joe Rivera). DC also scored some decent recognition with their iZombie Vertigo series, gathering 3 nominations (Cover Art, Coloring, Inker/Penciller) for the creative team.

After encountering a witch in the woods, Lula discovers what she believes to be a pretty rock, but in fact is a large egg. On her way home, the egg hatches, revealing giant monster which she names Chimichanga. The creature becomes fiercely loyal to Lula, trains with her,...

While the upcoming new broadcast season is unusually light on superpowered scheduling, Fox Television is helping to plug the gap by snapping up DC Comics property The Spectre.
Maybe not the first title to come to mind when asking what book should next make the jump to TV but, with Smallville ending and Wonder Woman failing before it began, DC is looking to regain its share of your couch-time.
According to Deadline, the show has a script commitment from the studio, tapping Brandon Camp (John Doe, Love Happens) for writing and producing duties and feature veteran Bill Gerber as an executive producer.
Possessing the resurrected spirit of a murdered cop, the Spectre serves as the avatar of vengeance, punishing the guilty and protecting the innocent. First appearing in 1940's More Fun Comics 52 - and co-created by Superman founding father Jerry Siegel - the character could offer a potentially dark and violent drama.

Worst comic read ever! Not that this was a surprise though, given that one of my rules for deciding if I should buy a new comic title is to see how many/how ‘big’ it’s variant covers are going to be. The more variant covers linked to an issue, the worse the read usually is. And Idw’s Godzilla variant campaign was epically huge!
Someone at Idw had a stroke of marketing genius when – probably looking at a production mock-up of the book and realizing they should burn it and never look back – they decided to do a variant cover for every shop that ordered 500 copies of the book. This being 495 more than any store would have ordered normally. Idw’s offer – if you order 500 copies of Godzilla #1, they would do a cover with your store being crushed, and the shop’s logo, launching out from amongst the rubble.

Idw Publishing announced that Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters Issue #1 sold out just a day after making its debut at comic book retail stores throughout North America. Written by Eric Powell and Tracy Marsh, with artwork by Phil Hester, the rapid sell-out marks a fantastically successful return for the giant fire-breathing lizard to comics.
To meet the continued demand and ensure fans everywhere have access to the comic, Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters #1 will be stomping its way back into stores in a ground-shaking second printing.
“We’re absolutely excited to see such a huge response to Godzilla: Kingdom Of Monsters,” said Ted Adams, Idw Chief Executive Officer. “We thought a sell-out for the first issue might be in the cards, but selling out in one day exceeded even our own lofty expectations. Last summer we got the early word that Lance Henriksen would be writing an autobiography of his iconic life and career with the help of Nightmare in Red White and Blue writer/producer Joe Maddrey, and now we finally know the title and who will be publishing it.
Not Bad for a Human (official site here) is the name of Henriksen's book, and it will be published in a limited edition by Steve Niles and Alex Lodermeier at Bloody Pulp Books this summer. It will feature illustrations by Bernie Wrightson, Eric Powell, Tim Bradstreet, Mike Mignola, Ashley Wood, Bill Sienkiewicz, and many others although the line-up may change slightly.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was a great gateway game, and a borderline gateway drug, for gamers and younglings alike who tended to treat fighting games passively. With a massive roster of beloved characters, frantic and absurd combo chains and watered down controls so that an amateur could take on anyone in the room, it has become one of the most widely beloved fighting games of them all, despite a house jazz ensemble score. It also became a necessary evil for fighting games over all; heinously imbalanced and shamelessly re-using sprites from older games. I don’t need to tell you, though, that ten years change a lot of things, and in a post-Street Fighter IV world, sprite pasting and forced crossovers simply won’t cut it. There are a lot of fighting fans and fighting games out there, and with plenty of changes, additions, subtractions and super-hyper-ultra-actions in this latest iteration,...

It has been far to long since Godzilla has stomped a comic city to smithereens. But thanks to Idw Publishing, The King of Monsters comes roaring back to comics in March. The team behind his triumphant return is "Goon" creator Eric Powell co-writing with Tracy Marsh and artist Phil Hester. In an interview with Cbr, we learn that in “Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters”, the world in which they come storming out to has never before encountered a threat like them. Marsh adds, “it’s about as prepared to handle the attacks as it was to handle September 11 or the earthquake in Haiti. The results are much the same as they were after those events—everything goes haywire. People are scared, hurt, dead, homeless, in need of resources they can’t get. But in 'Kingdom of Monsters,' it happens over and over. Snafu!” Powell goes on to tell...

Creator of The Goon Slams Marvel Editor Change; Offers Updates on Film
Eric Powell, the creator of the acclaimed Darkhorse comic, recently took to his Twitter account and let loose on Marvel's recent editor re-organization and how long it 'could' take to see a Goon movie. Alex Alonso has recently taken the role as Editor-in-Chief at Marvel Comics, replacing Joe Quesada. Powell has been a big supporter of creator owned comics and has recently reccomended his Twitter followers to go out and buy anything that isn't a superhero book. Commenting on the change of editors at Marvel, Powell humerously bashed the company, tweeting: "Big change at Marvel?! Ya mean they are gonna act like a real publisher and do diversified new content instead of whoring 50 yr old ideas?!" "Oops. My mistake. Hey, Marvel, ... From the window... to the walls... till the sweat drips down...

Back in October, we brought you the exclusive news that Godzilla was returning to comics — and he was bringing a whole mess of monsters with him. Today, Idw Publishing has revealed the creative team that will handle Godzilla's new adventures, and offered up a brand new cover image for the series.
Scripted by "Goon" creator Eric Powell and Tracy Marsh, the newly retitled "Godzilla: Monster World" will feature art by Phil Hester ("Green Arrow," "Firebreather") and painted covers by Powell and Alex Ross. According to Idw, the series unfolds in a world where "the monsters are a force of nature whose attacks can be no more predicted or rationalized than a lightning strike. There will be no clean-cut heroes with perfectly chiseled chins and capes billowing in the wind; only ordinary human beings struggling desperately to survive in a world gone mad."

Dark Horse pairs two of history's most notorious killers in a very unlikely comic book. Billy the Kid's Old Timey Oddities and the Ghastly Fiend imagines what would happen if Billy the Kid was never killed by Pat Garrett, and instead ended up in London with a traveling circus sideshow, investigating the Whitechapel killings. More after the jump. The final issue in the four-issue arc arrives December 15 with different covers from writers/artists Eric Powell and Kyle Hotz. Can't wait a month? Fangoria has an exclusive look at half a dozen pages from the book.

With Kevin Smith off filming Red State and leaving Hit Somebody on ice (see what I did there?), doors have been opened for the other hockey movement in development: Goon. Not to be confused with the animated movie based on the comic by Eric Powell, the film is based on the book "Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey" and already stars Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel, Alison Pill and Marc-Andre Grondin. Now they're adding one more to the bunch. THR reports that Liev Schreiber has joined the cast and will play Ross Reardon, a renowned brute on the ice. Set to start filming next week in Winnipeg, Canada, the project was written by Baruchel and Evan Goldberg and is being directed by Michael Dowse. If anything, this film has one really good thing going for it: there aren't a lot of films about hockey.

To say the New York Comic Con 2010 weekend was busy for your friendly neighborhood Splash Page editor could be a world-class understatement. Carey Mulligan and Meryl Streep go head to head again, while a troop of sky-diving nuns aren't enough to save Harmony Korine
At last month's Baftas all eyes were on Carey Mulligan, who was up for two awards: Leading Actress, which she won to rapturous applause, and Rising Star, which she lost to the shrug-shouldered Twilight star Kristen Stewart. Yet despite Stewart's victory (which she graciously – and correctly – attributed to the fanatical loyalty of the "Twi-Hards"), Mulligan was the real star of the evening, her presence sparking critical plaudits and paparazzi flashbulbs in equal measure. Right now, she seems set to become the UK's biggest screen export.
An Education (2009, E1, 12), which catapulted Mulligan to such prominence, is an agreeably old-fashioned affair – a coming-of-age tale about a brainy girl being led astray by a slick'n'sleazy older man. The setting, efficiently evoked by Danish director Lone Scherfig, is London in the all-but-swinging 60s.

Nora Ephron had already signed on to write and direct the movie that combined the story of Julia Child's start in the cooking profession with the emotional journey of blogger Julie Powell, when she ran into Meryl Streep at a Shakespeare in the Park performance. Ephron told Streep what she was working on, and Streep offered her best Julia Child impression: "Bon appétit!" Ephron knew her search was over. After reading the script, Streep called Ephron. "I thought it was absolutely beautiful," Streep recalls. "It made me cry, the idea that what you put in front of your family, that love, those connections between people, are the real important things." "Both stories were going to be about marriage and food, two things that go together in most people's lives," says Ephron. "When you're in the romantic comedy business, the movie ends when people say, 'Will you marry me?'...

I think it's a valid question. At this point, with the almost impossible to measure impact that the Charles Dickens story "A Christmas Carol" has had on Western culture, can you review the material anymore? Is it beyond review? After all, the story and the characters have been told, retold, parodied, absorbed, reconfigured, post-modernized, and retold again pretty much continuously since the story was first published. Is there a single long-running sitcom that didn't eventually get around to doing its own version of the story? For example, there's an amazing retelling of the story that Eric Powell did for The...

524 recipes. 365 days. 123 minutes. A 3 out of 5 star movie. Those are just some of the numbers that pertain to ‘Julie & Julia,’ Nora Ephron’s biopic/dramedy that has way of entertaining in fits and starts.
Presented in back-and-forth fashion, the film tells two true stories. One pertains to Julia Child, played by Meryl Streep, and her husband, Paul, played by Stanley Tucci. Paul works for the Us embassy, and, as soon as the couple arrives in Paris, he and his wife take to the culture, particularly the food. It’s the ’40s and ’50s, and Julia has yet to become the famed chef. This half of the film centers on her working on her first book, an encyclopedia-sized book of recipes that would eventually become Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
Intercut with this is the story of Julie Powell, played by Amy Adams. Julie is a frustrated secretary living in 2002 New York City.

Just like with famous chef Julia Child’s recipes, this film loves to smother itself up with butter, but just the right amount to make it tasty and satisfying.
If I made food like she did I'd squeal with delight too.
Now, I’m not saying that this film is in any way, shape or form edible, but once you see those delectable recipes that Julie Powell and Julia Child cook up on screen you’ll want to eat it up. Aside from that, the film has a purely balanced selection of comedy and drama as you teeter back and forth between Julie’s life in New York as she tries to finish up the recipes within the span of a year (and blogging it up) to Julia’s new life in Paris back in her prime as she finds a new passion in the kitchen. Despite the huge gap...
