In the final episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2, Azula’s lightning strike takes down Aang, nearly killing him. Before Azula could finish her job, Iroh facilitated the Gaang’s escape, allowing Katara to treat his wounds using her Waterbending skills. However, the Fire Nation believed that the last Airbender was gone for good this time. In the first episode of Season 3, Azula gives credit to Zuko for taking down Aang when they met their father Fire Lord Ozai.
Azula, voiced by Grey DeLisle, in the Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series
Avatar director Giancarlo Volpe revealed that it was Azula’s evil plan that motivated her to give Zuko the credit. Volpe shared that Azula was actually passing the blame as she knew about the possibility that Aang may reemerge after getting healed by Katara.

Avatar: The Last Airbender had its second live-action outing with Netflix, taking significant liberties that caused the show to deviate from the source material. One such difference from the source material introduced Azula very early in the story, at a time when she was nowhere to be found in the original.

While fans of the show are largely upset by the change, given that it changes the dynamic between the characters of Azula and Zuko and leaves them lesser for it, Zuko actor Dallas Liu was excited that the writers were able to pull off the rivalry depicted on screen between the siblings, without them having to interact.

Water, Earth, Fire, Air, New Showrunners. Netflix‘s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender will switch things up for its remaining seasons as Albert Kim steps down as the wildly entertaining elemental adventure showrunner. Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani will lead the show as executive producers in the future. Boylan and Raisani are well-versed in the world of Avatar after Boylan served as co-executive producer on Season 1. At the same time, Raisani was an executive producer, director, and VFX supervisor. Kim remains a part of the series as an executive producer for seasons two and three.
Kim’s exit stems from his getting the opportunity to develop more projects at Disney. Additionally, he’s boarding the second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians as an executive producer. The promotional material and trailers of the show impressed audiences and they were expecting great things from the series after M. Night Shyamalan’s dismal 2010 adaptation. Daniel Dae Kim is the reason why Avatar: The Last Airbender feels like a serious series rather than a mundane fantasy one. With Netflix bringing out the big guns, Daniel Dae Kim has been cast in the role of Fire Lord Ozai in Avatar: The Last Airbender, and boy are we scared!
Boasting a serious look, Dae Kim is everything that a real-life Fire Lord Ozai would possess. From having an incredible body to the perfect hair, what makes Daniel Dae Kim’s Ozai even more charming is that the actor was inspired by real-life politicians to play the role of the tyrant in the Netflix series!

Amid several backlashes that the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender faced, Elizabeth Yu was among the first to face early criticisms from fans. Particularly, fans claimed that physically the actor was far from resembling Azula in Nickelodeon’s animated action-adventure.

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender has been largely well-received. This is even though fans were initially hesitant because of how the previous live-action version has turned out. While there were many things to love, one thing stood out. Which is the casting of actors of color in the series as characters who have Asian and Indigenous heritage.
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Yet it seems not every fan request can be fulfilled for some faction of the huge fandom the mythos found the casting of Elizabeth Yu problematic. Starring as Princess Azula, an antagonist, fans thought she looked too young and innocent to be playing such a role. Yet Yu is unbothered and unfazed by the criticism.

But with the rising popularity of live-action series, there was hope that Netflix would bring out the best. After becoming popular worldwide, the cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender has been going around and doing interviews and questionnaires. During one such questionnaire, Fire Prince Zuko actor Dallas James Liu mentioned one character who would always be one step ahead of Zuko. The mentioned character is Uncle Iroh. Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” including the finale.
At the start of my Zoom interview with “Avatar: The Last Airbender” star Dallas Liu, I can’t help showing off a mug that pictures his character Zuko, voiced by Dante Basco in the original animated series. I expect a polite laugh or other acknowledgement of his cartoon namesake, but Liu surprises me:

Like “Avatar” showrunner Albert Kim, Liu knows Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko’s Nickelodeon series inside and out. “Lee from the tea shop” is a Season 2 reference — even this superfan had to think for a beat before remembering Zuko’s go-to fugitive alias — and just one example of how much care has gone into bringing the beloved series to life.

Albert Kim needs you to know that he is an “Avatar: The Last Airbender” superfan.
The writer and executive producer of Netflix’s live-action retelling of the Nickelodeon cartoon took on the role of showrunner after creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko exited the series — but he was already part of the writers room and a longtime “Avatar” fan before that.
“I did work with [Dimartino and Konietzko] for a short period, and we overlapped while we were here and I got along great with them,” Kim told IndieWire ahead of “Avatar”s February 22 premiere. “I was excited just as a fan to be able to dig in and ask my own nerdy fan questions about Zuko’s mom and who Aang’s parents might be, and all the fun stuff fans like to talk about.

Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series had created some very high expectations for anime fans. From the sneak peeks, cast announcements, and trailers, everything was going its way. On top of this, the disappointingly low standard set by the 2010 film, made fans believe that there was nowhere to go but up. Unfortunately, they were deeply mistaken.

Upon its release, audiences loved the series in its entirety, with it having very good ratings on platforms like IMDb. Despite this, critics had a completely different reaction. Horrified at what they saw, the series created a new low for just how bad an adaptation can be for them. So much so, that their reviews about it, alone, can stop it from getting another season.

All of Hollywood is looking for ways to reinvent successful stories, but what happens when the original is near-perfect? You have to reinvent the wheel while the prototype is still flourishing in the market, and the inventors watch from afar as their blueprints fall into new hands.
Such is the case with Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” a dramatic reimagining of the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon from Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko. Both creators exited the live-action series in 2020, citing creative differences that have lurked in the shadows while the highly-anticipated end product makes its way to the screen. Under the guidance of showrunner Albert Kim, this is not your Gran-Gran’s “Avatar,” with mixed results.
As the title suggests, the series centers on a figure called the Avatar, one who can master all four elements in a world where water, earth, fire, and air are pillars of culture spirituality,...

When Paul Sun-Hyung Lee stepped onto the set of Avatar: The Last Airbender, his first reaction was simple: “Just nerding out,” the actor, who plays Uncle Iroh tells Tudum. “I saw Sokka’s club, I saw Aang’s glider, the Pai Sho coin that Iroh has with the White Lotus on it….”
In fact, the number of hidden (and not-so-hidden) references in the live action series to the original animated version is “bountiful,” says Lee. Showrunner Albert Kim says that he and his team purposefully paid tribute: “There’s a lot of Easter eggs in the show that hopefully fans will have fun digging out.”
Elizabeth Yu, who plays Fire Nation princess Azula, told Netflix that she and her castmates couldn’t help but become megafans of the animated series while filming. “Everything we’ve done comes out of a true appreciation and respect for what this show means to fans,...

This post contains spoilers for "Avatar: The Last Airbender."
Can we get a yip-yip? After quite a long wait, the celebrated children's series "Avatar: The Last Airbender" has taken the massive leap from animation to live-action. Although mileage may vary on exactly how well Netflix pulled off this ambitious feat of adaptation, the characters that fans have known and loved have all been reimagined through the lens of a much more streamlined and straightforward version of the same story.
The debut season follows Aang (Gordon Cormier), the reincarnated Avatar and master of the four elements, as he struggles to come to grips with his disappearance from the world a hundred years prior. The stunning opening sequence of the premiere depicts this very event in all its tragic detail, beginning with Aang's reveal that he is the long-prophesied savior of the world and continuing through to the conquering Fire Nation's genocide of the airbenders.

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender has massive shoes to fill with its live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series, and the same is true for the actors tasked with bringing the show’s characters to life. Granted, the bar is likely close to the floor for live-action adaptations after M. Night Shyamalan’s infamous attempt in 2010, but nonetheless, fans expect a lot from whoever tries to adapt this story.
From familiar faces like Danny Pudi and Daniel Dae Kim to relative newcomers, here’s the cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender and where you’ve seen these actors before.

A big-budget live-action adaptation of a cult Nickelodeon animated fantasy series, the return of a sports docuseries that transformed the global appeal of Formula 1, a new animated feature written by the incomparable Charlie Kaufman, and another season of a reality dating show that inspires equal parts love and hate on social media are among the standout projects hitting Netflix in February.
Netflix’s big feature release this month is the animated film Orion and the Dark, which debuts Feb. 2. Written by Charlie Kaufman, the celebrated scribe behind Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Adaptation, the film is an adaptation of Emma Yarlett’s children’s book about an anxious kid who is scared of the dark. Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender trailer is slicing through the Oscars buzz today with a blade of wind and fire in its heart. The live-action adaptation of Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko’s beloved animated series is one of 2024’s most anticipated projects, and fans are finally getting an extended look at the upcoming Netflix series. Borrowing familiar beats from Nickelodeon‘s animated presentation, Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender trailer burns brightly with bold alterations to the material, distancing itself from the original and M. Night Shyamalan’s universally-panned live-action film.
Here’s the official description for Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender:

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender series isn’t the first time the iconic animated show has made the leap to live-action. M. Night Shyamalan previously adapted the series with The Last Airbender in 2010, but Avatar fans have been eager to forget that it even exists.
Albert Kim, the showrunner behind the upcoming Netflix series, told Entertainment Weekly that he has actively avoided watching Shyamalan’s Avatar movie. “I’ll tell you something, I never watched the Shyamalan movie,” Kim said. “There was a period of time where I thought I should watch it, but then I thought, I don’t really want those images in my head as I start to go forward with our version of this project. So I avoided it purposefully.“

When Netflix announced their live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, fans were thrilled to learn that original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino were involved. However, the Avatar creators exited the project in 2020 due to creative differences. “Many of you have been asking me for updates about the ‘Avatar’ live-action Netflix series,” Dimartino wrote in a blog post. “I can finally tell you that I am no longer involved with the project. In June of this year, after two years of development work, Bryan Konietzko and I made the difficult decision to leave the production.” The pair had signed on as executive producers and showrunners, but apparently “things did not go as we had hoped.“
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Avatar: The Last Airbender showrunner Albert Kim admitted that it was “absolutely” daunting to continue the series without creators Konietzko and Dimartino. “You’d have to be an...

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains some spoilers for “May December.”]
There’s one word to describe the past few months in rising star Elizabeth Yu’s acting career: “wild.” Spend a little time with the “May December” breakout on the phone, and she’ll invoke the term for everything from the response to the Todd Haynes film to her rapid-fire casting process to her first day on set, which literally saw her smack in between two acting legends in a scene that’s a strong contender for sequence of the year. Wild.
And she’s not wrong. While “May December,” in which Yu plays Mary Atherton-Yoo, one of three children belonging to embattled couple Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Julianne Moore) and Joe Yoo (Charles Melton), is only Yu’s second film role (the first was in Ray Romano’s 2022 effort “Somewhere in Queens”), she more than holds her own in the lauded feature.
