Stars like Tom Hanks and Harrison Ford are being rendered younger digitally but voices in the industry express concern about where we might be heading
Craggy, grey-haired and 80 years old, Harrison Ford might seem a bit old to don his brown Fedora-style hat or crack his whip as Indiana Jones. But a trailer for his upcoming film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny offers a flashback to Indy in his swashbuckling glory days.
“That is my actual face at that age,” the actor explained on CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “They have this artificial intelligence (AI) programme. It can go through every foot of film that Lucasfilm owns because I did a bunch of movies for them and they have all this footage including film that wasn’t printed: stock. They could mine it from where the light is coming from, the expression. But that’s my actual face.

Ke Huy Quan is up for a Short Round series if the chance ever comes around. With the upcoming movie Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny set to shut the book on the main series, spinoff ideas are starting to generate. The 51-year-old actor was recently seen in the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once. He even reconnected with Harrison Ford, aka Indiana Jones, at a convention not long ago. The love for the character in Temple of Doom has lasted for decades now. A reunion isn’t going to happen, as the next Indiana Jones movie is the last.

Ke Huy Quan accepted the award for best supporting actor with a powerful speech at the Golden Globes on Jan. 10. The actor was honored for his role in "Everything Everywhere All at Once," and he gave a special shout-out to Steven Spielberg, who gave him his first big role in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom."
"I was raised to never forget where I came from, and to always remember who gave me my first opportunity. I am so happy to see Steven Spielberg here tonight," he said. "When I started my career as a child actor in 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,' I felt so very lucky to have been chosen," he said. However, in later years, his career slowed. One thing a lot of Harrison Ford fans have picked up on over the years is that the actor never seemed to care that much about "Star Wars." He's said on multiple occasions that he'd been pushing for his character Han Solo to die long before they finally took him out in "The Force Awakens." Whereas Ford has always seemed fiercely protective over his star role as Indiana Jones, he's never seemed to care quite as much about the scroundrel that made him a household name.
But although Ford's feelings towards the franchise may be complicated, his feelings towards "The Empire Strikes Back" are surprisingly straightforward. "It's the first time I've ever seen anything I've done that I'm happy with," the actor said, according to the 2002 biography "The Films of Harrison Ford." A big part of what made his performance work was his easygoing relationship with the new director, Irvin Kershner,...

Mutt Williams, the motorcycle-riding, greaser son of Indiana Jones, was introduced in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The audience’s reaction to the character wasn’t overly kind, but it was clear the movie was setting Mutt up to be a major part of the franchise. Flash forward fifteen years, and Mutt Williams is nowhere to be found in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Although it’s been confirmed that Mutt Williams won’t be making an appearance in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, director James Mangold has promised that audiences will “find out what happened” to the character. Something about going back to his home planet? Mangold wouldn’t say anything more, but there must be some fans of the character who are anxious to find out what happened to ol’ Mutt.

Indiana Jones has been doing this whole "Action hero archaeologist" thing for a long, long time. In that span, he's squared off against some of the greatest powers and fiercest villains the world has ever seen. Next year, however, the rugged adventurer might just come up against his most dangerous threat yet: internet rumors.
Someone light a candle for the endlessly patient director James Mangold, please. Ever since signing on to the franchise film that would eventually be revealed as "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," the "Walk the Line" and "Logan" filmmaker and the project overall have come under a relentless barrage of internet ire fueled by some of the worst members of modern fandom these days. If Marvel fatigue is real, it isn’t manifesting itself in Fandango’s “most anticipated movies of 2023” survey. Among the 5,000 Fandango users polled, the most anticipated films coming next year are “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and the Sony-produced Marvel sequel “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
The hope is that an overall increase in theatrical releases in 2023 will help close the gap between the current overall domestic box office for the late 2010s. The overall box office is down around 43 from the last few pre-covid years, and there were around 45 fewer theatrical releases compared to 2019.
Among those polled by the movie ticketing company, 99 were excited to see new movies in theaters, 97 pledged to attend more often compared to 2022 and 72 wanted to see more movies in IMAX and other premium large-format auditoriums.

When James Mangold signed on to direct the next Indiana Jones movie, he knew the job would come with absurd expectations. Pressure is part-and-parcel with any tentpole property. Still, Indiana Jones is one of cinema’s most beloved adventurers, and fans are likely to eat anyone alive who fails the character on any level. Especially after the disastrous fourth film in the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Still, Mangold is only about to take rumors about his new movie seriously if they threaten the project’s integrity and the efforts of his hard-working cast and crew. Hence the director’s latest tweet dispels rumors about reshoots, alternative endings, and more.
“So I took a b-day break from trolls. But it seems I gotta once again say.. We’re not shooting & never shot any new scenes or “alt endings.” Our film is 99 finished, getting rated by MPAA & VFX being completed.

James Mangold returned to Twitter after a short break to once again battle “Indiana Jones” trolls. Mangold, director of “Indiana Jones 5,” officially titled “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” previously shut down claims that his movie hands over the role of Indiana Jones to Harrison Ford’s new co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Mangold is now shutting down more lies, including claims that he had to shoot new scenes and alternate endings for the movie.
“So I took a [birthday] break from trolls. But it seems I gotta once again say…We’re not shooting and never shot any new scenes or ‘alternate endings,'” Mangold wrote on Twitter. “Our film is 99 finished, getting rated by MPAA and VFX being completed. Happy Holidays!”
When one follower called “bullshit” and said all Disney films shoot alternative scenes, Mangold responded, “Well, Anthony, it is so kind of you to call me bullshit but...

Here we are: somehow it’s December already, 2022 has flown by at Mach 10 speed, and it’s already time to tot up the very best movies of the year. It’s been a doozy – with picturehouses back open and in full swing, massive blockbusters sweeping across screens and into our eyeballs, and all kinds of cinematic surprises winning our hearts. It’s been the year of the multiverse, both in the MCU and beyond. It’s been a year of searing social commentary, delivered in the form of gripping crowdpleasers. It’s been a year of auteurs taking on gigantic budgets and doing fascinating things with them. And it’s been a year of comebacks – not just from Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, but the cinema itself. As Vin Diesel perhaps said it best: “The movies.”

Not only the Communist Party and its prominent team of antiques experts Plum Blossom Five is after the jade head of the Bodhisattva statue damaged in the big temple fire in 1910 when the head was severed from the body and vanished, but also some of China’s most dangerous art-dealing gangs. According to the (film) history books, the priceless treasure of Wu Zetian Mingtang in the Tang Dynasty was lost overseas only to re-appear in 1992 in form of a perfectly done copy which one person only was able to uncover as a fake. But, where is a perfectly executed copy, there also must be the original, and the chase it begins.

Dreams are scary. In The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg puts his own childhood up on the big screen, through the Dream Factory, with the help many of his regular collaborators, screenwriter Tony Kushner, John Williams and Janusz Kaminski among others. His story starts from his parents taking him as a young child, Sam, to the movies to see The Greatest Story Ever Told. It then follows the Spielberg, er, Fabelman clan as they move slowly westward from New Jersey to California via Arizona as Mr. Fabelman’s career as an electrical engineer grows in leaps and bounds along with the nascent computer industry, and Sam makes his way onto the CBS Studio...

As the "Star Wars" galaxy continues to expand, so does the sheer volume of characters that inhabit it. It seems like everyone has appeared in a "Star Wars" project of some kind, or at least auditioned for one. The franchise has become a pretty formidable incubator for lesser-known talent for this very reason. So many actors have been "discovered" through an appearance in a "Star Wars" film, whether they be relative unknowns or craft-focused character actors. Nowadays, it seems like it's less a question of whether someone will join that galaxy far, far away, but when.
Casting for something as huge as "Star Wars," however, is always going to be tricky. The franchise needs actors with star power for sure, but the more they can "disappear" into the world, the better. Fortunately, there are still so many underrated actors out there that could really bring something new to "Star Wars.

Though it received a Best Picture nomination at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022, Guillermo del Toro's re-adaptation of the William Lindsay Gresham novel "Nightmare Alley" hit theaters the same day as "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and was overshadowed by that movie's juggernaut success amid the pandemic. It makes the most of those shadows, though, filling them with smoke and "the poetry of disillusionment and existentialism," as del Toro has called it. This is a movie that lives at the carnival, where you're less likely to see any spider-men and more likely to see a woman with a spider's body warning children about the sins of lust and pride.
Co-written by Kim Morgan, the del Toro version of "Nightmare Alley" takes its cues from Gresham's book and was not intended as a remake of the black-and-white 1947 adaptation starring Tyrone Power. However, that movie is a classic and it's worth...

Doctor Who Series 13 Episode 5 Review
Warning: this Doctor Who review contains spoilers.
If there’s one thing you can say about Flux, it’s that no two episodes have felt quite the same. For better or worse, each chapter has worked to establish its own tone and tempo, which has helped add to the sense of scale the story possesses. It also means members of the audience will appreciate some episodes more than others, depending on which flavour of Doctor Who they prefer. A selection box rather than a king-sized Toblerone, in other words.
This week, we’ve gone from the creeping horror of Weeping Angels in misty Devon to an Indiana Jones-style, globetrotting adventure that’s heavy on banter and physical comedy. The breakneck pace, unfortunately, means that there’s little or no attention given to wrapping up some dangling plot points from last week’s episode and...

This Red Notice article contains spoilers.
Ostensibly, Red Notice is an action-adventure heist film that capitalizes on the star power of its lead actors to carry a fairly formulaic but fun storyline. In fact, it has become the trademark of director Rawson Marshall Thurber and his movie lineup starring Dwayne Johnson, which includes 2018’s Skyscraper and 2016’s Central Intelligence. But it’s the battle between the rival thieves played by Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds that really heightens the derivative nature of the film by posing a subliminal question: did Wonder Woman just kick Deadpool’s ass?
It’s an academic question that could be discussed ad nauseam outside of the context of Red Notice, of course. Deadpool is invincible and Wonder Woman — at least in the DC Extended Universe — is an immortal demi-god, so that debate could go on indefinitely. But Gadot’s character of the Bishop definitely wiped...

Lifting its title from Interpol’s most-wanted list, “Dodgeball” director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s twisty treasure-hunt lark “Red Notice” blurs the lines between good guys and bad guys, and instead focuses on which of two notorious art thieves is better at breaking the law: sarcastic master forger Nolan Booth (a reliably whiny Ryan Reynolds) or his upscale nemesis, known only as “the Bishop” (a more wine-and-diney Gal Gadot).
Their goal is to collect three ornamental orbs — worth some $300 million, but only as a set — originally gifted from Anthony to Cleopatra, then scattered to the corners of the globe. While Booth and the Bishop ricochet around the world, engaging in what amounts to a high-stakes Easter egg hunt, criminal profiler John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) tries to bring them in, making for a fun, fast-paced and frequently amusing divertissement. In viewing the film today, I was impressed how well it has held up over time. The movie packs a great deal into its modest 66-minute running time. Alright kiddies, time to gather around the fireplace for another magical fairy tale. Oh, scratch that, this is a movie so you’d need to gather not around but at the local movie theatre or multiplex. And one more thing, this story’s similar to a bedtime tale, but it’s really not for the “wee folk” (unless you want them to cease slumbering for a long time). Now, it is set in a faraway, but very real, land though it may seem that it’s on the edge of the “Twilight Zone”, or perhaps “Castle Rock”. Oh but there are some cuddly animals in the story which is certainly reflected in its simple title, Lamb.

This past summer, it was announced that Scott Snyder's Best Jackett Press is teaming up with comiXology for eight new comic book series that will be released digitally as comiXology Originals before eventually being published by Dark Horse Books. As part of their autumnal celebration that's turning October into "Scottober," three of those eight comic book series—Night of the Ghoul (created by Snyder and Francesco Francavilla), We Have Demons (created by Snyder and Greg Capullo), and Clear (created by Snyder and Francis Manapul)—will premiere in the weeks leading up to Halloween.
I recently had the chance to catch up with Snyder to talk about the creative freedom of teaming up with ComiXology, the natural gateway between reading comics digitally before buying them physically, and collaborating with different co-creators on his eclectic set of new comic book series, including Night of the Ghoul and We Have Demons.

This film exploring the ideas of Dr Phil Kennedy, who had an electrode implanted in his brain, throws up interesting prospects for the human future
Dr Phil Kennedy is regarded by many as the Indiana Jones of neuroscience: a Limerick-born doctor who became a bioengineering trailblazer, making people excited – and then nervous – by the way he worked outside the system. Then finally, sensationally, he experimented on himself by having an electrode implanted inside his brain in a Belize clinic that specialises in medical tourism.
Kennedy did this to measure the ways in which brainwaves can be harnessed to external computing capacity, helping people with locked-in syndrome or Als, for example, although what was specifically achieved by implant surgery on himself isn’t clear. This brief documentary is a partial introduction to the man and his work and it seeks to rescue Kennedy from his wacky reputation, to downplay the maverick...

Beneath the briny, where Davy Jones’ Locker is home to the bodies of thousands of dead sailors who lost their lives on the high seas, there be treasure. Frank Wild (Stanley Tucci) has never let go of his boyhood dreams of roaming the world turning up buried jewels and ships’ figureheads and letting pieces of eight run through his light fingers, although he has come up with some distinctly adult ploys to make that possible. Are they legal? Perhaps extra-legal would be the right expression. Think black ops. At the very least, there are some shady characters involved, the kinds of people captured by long lenses in police investigations.

(Welcome to ...And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)If adventure has a name, it must be Indiana Jones. And if Indiana Jones appears in a fifth movie, it must be called "Indiana Jones 5." Ok, Ok, you got me: the fifth film will almost certainly get a subtitle that follows the traditional "Indiana Jones and the [Insert Noun Here]" naming convention. As of this writing, though, the film is still being referred to as "Indiana Jones 5." Let's break down what we know about the sequel so far.

Transatlantic production label El Estudio has acquired the rights to author Fernando Gamboa’s hit novel “The Last Crypt,” and will work with powerhouse Spanish showrunner and “The Ministry of Time” creator Javier Olivares to develop the book into a high-end TV series, executive produced by Eulogio Romero (“Mitos y leyendas”).
“The Last Crypt,” the first in a three-book series, kicks off when diver Ulises Vidal discovers a small bronze bell buried in a coral reef near the Honduran island of Utila. With help from medieval history professor Eduardo Castillo, they learn that the bell is a Templar artifact, an impossibility unless all the history books are wrong and the Templars did in fact cross the Atlantic centuries before Columbus set off from the Spanish port of Palos de la Frontera in 1492.
With hopes of finding the fabled Templar’s treasure, the two join forces with Mexican archaeologist Cassandra Brooks...

The selections at this year’s North Bend Film Festival were (as usual) pretty great, but for me, Dash Shaw’s Cryptozoo was one of the biggest surprises of the fest. Full disclosure—I wasn’t really into it for the first 15 minutes. I didn’t dig the animation style and the opening sequence features two stoners who stumble up to a gigantic fence, climb it, find a unicorn, and then have the gall to touch it.
But then, we get into the story and it unfolds into something so much more magical and profound than I had expected. The animation grows more complex and detailed, taking on beautiful and deep colors. It’s a little psychedelic and a bit of an adventure story. Sometimes you really need to dig into a film to get its full impact, and this was one of those times for me. I was thrilled...

But we decided to announce it as a 32 crore film to hype it as a mega budget film. What stupidity! Even though the film managed to collect the actual budget it was regarded as average! Learnt not to lie whatever the odds are!” he tweeted. The 2010 film Aayirathil Oruvan starring Parthiban, Karthi, Andrea Jermiah and Reema Sen, despite being considered a box office failure and opening to mixed reviews, remains a cult film in the eyes of ardent fans of the filmmaker. This Beckett article contains spoilers.
You could be forgiven, going into the new Netflix thriller, Beckett, for expecting a vibe not dissimilar to John David Washington’s last big movie, Tenet. Like Tenet, Beckett is a conspiracy thriller about someone who finds themselves out of their depth, with chase scenes and gunplay aplenty, and Netflix probably doesn’t mind you making those associations when you’re choosing what to watch. But while Tenet was a film that very much harked back to classic Bond movies, Beckett’s inspirations are quite a bit older.
Watching Beckett feels a lot like watching an old Alfred Hitchcock suspense thriller. The plot, a tourist has a car accident and stumbles into a deadly conspiracy, is pure Hitchock, reminiscent of films such as The 39 Steps or The Man Who Knew Too Much. Even the soundtrack is full of jarring strings that don’t sound too...

Set to a wonderfully colourful, culturally rich backdrop of Korean heritage sites, “Collectors” should have the tools to be a uniquely interesting, original adventure film. It will certainly be a hit with festival goers, but despite boasting a flashy, showy script and charismatic cast, Park Jung-bae’s directorial debut fails in standing out from a clustered crowd of similar genre flicks, and veers too close to western counterparts such as “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in how it is packaged.
“Collectors” is screening at Fantasia Film Festival
At the heart of the movie is Kang Dong-gu (Lee Je-hoon), an expert in tomb raiding and money hungry individual. Harbouring the surprising skill of being able to track an artefact’s location through tasting soil, he finds himself a wanted man by both the authorities and shady businessmen after stealing a rare golden Buddha statue. Mainly, though, he finds himself the target...

Blame Johnny Depp.
I mean, listen, feel free to blame the actor for any number of things, if you want. But specifically, in terms of riot-act reading, let’s go back to 2003, when Mr. Depp slapped on a head scarf, trotted out his best Keef Richards wobble and slur, and turned what felt like a Disney Hail-Mary I.P. cash-in into a cash cow. No one expected a movie based on an amusement park ride based on creaky, age-old seafaring stories to give birth to a popular franchise; no one...

In “Jungle Cruise,” a Disney adventure that demonstrates how basing a movie on a theme-park ride may now be a more natural occurence than adapting it from a novel, Emily Blunt plays Dr. Lily Houghton, a London researcher-explorer who’s as fearless, in her demure way, as Indiana Jones, and Dwayne Johnson is Frank Wolff, the friendly huckster of a river-boat captain who ferries her down the Amazon at the height of World War I.
He wears a hat just like the one Humphrey Bogart wore in “The African Queen,” and she wears pants — which, of course, were an early adaptation of Katharine Hepburn’s. For anyone old enough, or old-movie-centered enough, to care (which is maybe five percent of this movie’s prospective audience), the banter between these two could be said to evoke Bogart and Hepburn — or, at least, Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in “Romancing the Stone.

It’s no secret at this point: Warner Bros’ upcoming Flash movie will not only be a showcase for Ezra Miller’s speedy Barry Allen but for a few other titans of the DC universe. As previously reported, the multiverse-spanning adventure will introduce the Dceu’s very own Supergirl, played by Sasha Calle, as well as see the return of both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as Batman. Yeah, it’s a very big movie — perhaps the most consequential DC big-screen event since 2017’s Justice League brought the world’s greatest heroes together for the first time.
Affleck’s return to the cape and cowl would be a big enough headline, especially after he initially bowed out of the role after attempts to write and direct his own Batman solo adventure, a movie now being helmed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson. But Keaton’s return is huge news.

Photo: ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark'/Paramount Pictures On June 12, 1981, an action-adventure film that featured Harrison Ford as the title character was released in theaters. It became a commercial success and won over audiences. This film was none other than ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’. 40 years later, the film has paved the way for multimedia franchises dominating the box office. The Premise and Production ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ is a film directed by Steven Spielberg. The story was written by George Lucas. For the role of Indiana Jones, Lucas originally wanted an unknown actor to portray the title character. At first, Tom Selleck was hired to portray the whip-wielding character but was unable to portray the character due to contractual obligations with his role on the television show, ‘Magnum P.I.’, so he backed out. Ultimately, Ford was chosen. Spielberg believed he fit the role after watching his performance...

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), the adventurous archeologist and my favorite Nazi puncher of all time, is back in a gorgeous 4K Blu-ray set with a ridiculous amount of extras fit for a legend. As they're filming the fifth version right now, I wonder, though, if this set will be upgraded with that film down the line, whether sooner or later. Still, it's a privilege to have this set to review. I probably don't have to repeat the plots of all four films, and there's been an on-and-off debate about which film in the series is best, so argue among yourselves; I'll be here simply enjoying the films. I do have to say that Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark...

A fedora never looks as cool as it does when it’s atop Harrison Ford’s head in Indiana Jones. Now, someone will own the iconic hat from the second film, Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom, after bidding $375,000 in an auction held by The Prop Store. Nearly as trusty as Jones’ whip, his fedora became a wardrobe…...
