It is now over a year since Roberto Martinez, then in charge of Wigan Athletic, rejected the top job at Liverpool because he felt it wasn’t the right one for him.
At the time, the Reds were in a period of transition and were looking for a younger manager to replace Kenny Dalglish, with Martinez and Brendan Rodgers on the shortlist. Rodgers took on the role after Martinez rejected it, leaving the Spaniard to remain for a further season at the Dw Stadium. It later transpired that Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has persuaded Martinez to stay with the relegation strugglers rather than move to a team challenging for the top four.

Everton look to be the busiest of the Premier League clubs in the final minutes of the transfer window, as they look to tie up deals for three new signings.
According to reports coming from Sky Sports News, the Merseyside club are set to sign Manchester City’s England midfielder Gareth Barry, as the player has reportedly turned up at the club’s training ground.
And the club are also now finally coming close to a deal for Wigan midfielder James McCarthy, after Dave Whelan finally announced himself happy with the terms offered from the Toffees. The club will now thrash out terms for the player, ahead of unveiling the player after the deadline of 11pm passes.
The fee that Sky Sports are talking about is £13million, and the only sticking point is how the payment is broken down.

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has added to Everton’s transfer deadline day woes by announcing that their bid for in-demand midfielder James McCarthy was nowhere near their valuation for the player.
While it is unknown precisely how much the Toffees bid for the player, Whelan was disappointed with both the valuation and the method of payment Everton were hoping to utilise.
Whelan’s response make it clear that Wigan were expecting a large amount paid in full for their Irish international, yet former manager Roberto Martinez offered a lower bid paid in installments over four years.
Speaking to BBC Radio Five Live, Whelan was adamant that his club will not sell McCarthy for such a small amount paid in fractions. He said:
“Everton are not matching what we are looking for. We asked for a certain price from Everton for James McCarthy, and they have not come near it.

Wigan Athletic have signed Nick Powell on a season-long loan from Manchester United, according to the BBC.
Wigan owner Dave Whelan confirmed the deal, saying:
“We obviously had Tom Cleverley on loan and I think United were happy with the job we did with him, so it’s good news that we’ve got the lad.
The 19-year-old joined United from Crewe Alexandra in 2012 but made just two Premier League appearances for the club, and saw two more appearances in the Capital One Cup and Champions League later in the campaign.
Powell becomes the Latic’s eleventh summer arrival in what has been a busy transfer period for new manager Owen Coyle.
The same however cannot be said of United, who are still awaiting their first big signing as the transfer window ticks toward its final hour.
The Red Devils have been linked with moves for Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini...

Are Everton looking to replace Marouane Fellaini ahead of a potential move to Man Utd? According to the MailOnline, the Belgian midfielder is ready to hand in a transfer request to force through a deadline day move to Manchester, and Everton will be faced with a massive hole in the middle of their midfield if that goes through.
The Mail say that they are already making a move to bolster their midfield, whether that outgoing deal happens or not, as they have agreed a fee with Wigan for James McCarthy, and are currently locked in talks as to how the money is paid to the Championship club.
That deal would be worth £12.5million, after two lower bids were rejected, and McCarthy would join up with former manager Roberto Martinez, if the terms of payment can be hammered out. According to the report, Everton want to pay in smaller installments, but...

Everton manager Roberto Martinez is hoping to raid former club Everton for a forth time this summer by signing midfielder James McCarthy, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Having already lured Arouna Kone, Joel Robles and Antolin Alcaraz away from the Dw Stadium, the former Latics manager now wants to add the 22-year-old to his ranks at his new club.
Martinez, who has taken over at Goodison Park this summer following David Moyes’ departure to Manchester United, considers McCarthy crucial to his plans for a successful debut campaign next season.
The Express report that the Scotland international could cost at least £15 million despite having been signed from Scottish Championship side Hamilton Academical for £1 million four seasons ago.
Since then, McCarthy blossomed under Martinez at the Dw and has attracted interest from a number of leading Premier League sides, such as Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs are however reluctant to meet Wigan’s £20 million asking price.

Chelsea Football Club have announced on their official website the signing of forward Victor Moses from Wigan Athletic. The transfer fee has yet to be disclosed.
The 21-year-old winger’s final appearance for Wigan ironically came against Chelsea when the two sides squared off last Sunday at the Dw Stadium. The Blues came out 2-0 victors, but Moses did catch the eye with his wide-play. Though in truth Chelsea’s initial interest in Moses goes back months sooner with Latics chairman Dave Whelan confirming in June that his club had turned down a transfer bid from Chelsea.
The Nigerian international becomes the second new signing to arrive at Stamford Bridge this week after Marseille defender Cesar Azipilcueta also finally completed his move to London. Neither player will line-up today against Newcastle United as the Blues look to make it three wins out of three in the Premier League, kick-off time at 5.30pm on Espn.

Arsenal are ready to offload wantaway attacker Theo Walcott for £15 million, according to a report in The Daily Mail.
England’s Euro 2012 winger has told manager Arsene Wenger that he won’t commit his future to the Emirates unless Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie signs a contract extension. Both Walcott and Van Persie have just one one year left to run on their respective contracts and with Van Persie having declared last week that he won’t be signing a new deal, Walcott is likely to force Arsenal’s hands into selling the player for fear of losing him on a free next summer.
The 23-year-old is being courted heavily by Juventus and also by Chelsea and now looks certain to leave Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger has reportedly found a replacement for Theo Walcott who it’s claimed won’t sign an extension to his Arsenal deal that expires next summer. According to The Metro, Wigan’s Victor Moses has emerged as Wenger’s number one target to take the England Euro 2012 winger’s place in The Gunners side should the veteran French manager be forced to sell Walcott.
For months, Walcott’s future at Arsenal was said to hinge on whether Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie would commit to a long term extension at Arsenal. When the Dutch sensation and Pfa Player of the Year announced last week that he would not be signing a new contract at the Emirates, Walcott’s future at Arsenal is now looking increasingly uncertain.

In Chelsea’s attempt to part the Premier League waves, they look set to up their bid for Moses. Victor Moses, that is.
Wigan’s versatile attacker, now in the final year of his current contract at the Dw Stadium, is seen by new Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo as a vital piece of his Premier League jigsaw to elevate the Blues into challenging for the title once again. However it is becoming clear he will have to pay out more than the £3.5m he has so far offered if he’s to convince Dave Whelan and Roberto Martinez into selling their prized asset, especially as Moses’ former club Crystal Palace are reportedly due 20% of any transfer deal.
The Daily Mail reports today that Chelsea could be preparing a £10 million move to secure Moses’ services.

Chelsea have had a £10 million bid rejected for Wigan forward Victor Moses, according to Teamtalk.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has reportedly shown his resolve and isn’t willing to let his prized asset leave for Stamford Bridge without an astronomical offer despite Moses only having one year left to run on his contract at the Dw Stadium. In six months he would be able to discuss a free transfer to any other club and Wigan would lose him for no money next summer so rejecting the offer was a brave move by the chairman.
The 21-year-old former Crystal Palace forward has scored only eight league goals in three seasons at Wigan, though six of those did come last season and his overall performances have impressed Chelsea. They are in the market for some more attacking options after the departures of Nicolas Anelka, Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou over the past twelve months.

Rafael Benitez, Michael Laudrup, Andre Villas-Boas, Fabio Capello, Roy Keane, Ralf Rangnick, Alex McLeish and Juan Carlos Garrido. That is just a short list of experienced managers who are currently unemployed. Not for a second do I think that all of them would be available to a club with the financial constraints of West Brom.
With Chris Hughton taking the Norwich job, Steve Bruce going to Hull and Roberto Martinez’s loyalty to Dave Whelan making a mockery of all other manger – chairman relationships. Where exactly were West Brom supposed to look for a new manager?
“From the outset, we decided to pursue candidates who are renowned for their coaching ability and Steve was very much at the forefront of our thoughts because of the clubs he has worked at and the high regard he is held in within the game”.
Dan Ashworth, West Brom Technical Director, said that to the West Brom website.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is the bookies favourite to replace Kenny Dalglish as the next permanent manager of Liverpool football club.
British newspapers reported on Sunday that the 38-year-old Spaniard had “caught the eye” of American owners John Henry and Tom Werner after an impressive 2012 with Wigan and that they were preparing to make a move for the Latics boss after losing faith in Dalglish following a poor league campaign.
Bookies suggest Martinez is around 10/11 and 6/4 or 6/5 at most places to be the new Anfield boss.
Previously, Wigan chairman Dave Whelan admitted that he would give Martinez “his blessing” should a top European club make an approach for him.
Current second favourite for the job is another Spaniard, former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez, who has been out of work since he was sacked by Inter Milan in 2010. Benitez was Liverpool’s most successful manager of the modern era, winning the...

Save one man, Alex McLeish’s sacking did not surprise anybody when the axe finally fell on his tenure as Aston Villa boss today. While the ex-Rangers boss will claim injuries and tightening budgets were to blame, the fact is Aston Villa performed woefully short of expectations. Even with the sales of Ashley Young and Stewart Downing, Villa should never have flirted with relegation for so long.
McLeish just about managed to avoid taking down a second Birmingham club in succession, but it’s not all doom and gloom in the Holte End. Darren Bent, Richard Dunne and Shay Given are proven at Premiership level, and the one bright side of McLeish’s reign has been the promotion of some of Villa’s prodigious academy prospects. But who should Randy Lerner look to take over in the dugout?

Liverpool’s Us owners will make an approach for Wigan boss Roberto Martinez as their next permanent manager should they decide to part ways with Anfield legend Kenny Dalglish in the summer, according to The Daily Star.
The American owners John W Henry and Tom Werner have been “hugely impressed” with Martinez’s work as Wigan manager in the second half of this season and in keeping the Latics afloat for another year. They have admired his persistence in always keeping to his philosophy of possession play and attractive, high intensity football. Liverpool believe that with their players, the Spaniard could mould the Merseyside side club back into Champions League contention next season and he will be top of the list should they out Dalglish for a mid-table finish.
There’s also reports that Dalglish may step down as manager following today’s game at Swansea City after a miserable league campaign.

For a team lauded for their attractive playing style, and for having a manager among the brightest talents in the top division, Wigan have had an appalling start to this season, and will be looking for 2012 to offer more than their embarrassing third round exit from the Fa Cup at the hands of Paulo Dicanio’s Swindon Town.
