Guy Maddin’s sophomore feature, Archangel, takes place in a fantastical crossroads of history, in a hamlet in Russia so remote that the twin shocks of World War I and the Bolshevik Revolution have only just reached town limits in 1919. Its plot—of a love triangle between a traumatized WWI veteran (Kyle McCulloch), the woman (Kathy Marykuca) he believes is his dead wife, and her own amnesiac husband (Ari Cohen)—offers something of a précis of narrative tropes and themes that would pervade Maddin’s cinema. There’s the juxtaposition of archaic film form with more risqué sexual exhibition, the slipperiness of memory, and a notion of projection heavily indebted to Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo.
Nonetheless, Archangel feels more like a repository of references to the cinema of a hundred years ago than something fully imbued with Maddin’s signature idiosyncrasy. Verohnka, for one, habitually wears a spiky, chintzy crown...

First nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the Oscars with the 2012 film “The Gatekeepers,” director Dror Moreh could return to the awards race 10 years later with “The Corridors of Power.” The new film from Showtime combines in-depth interviews with rare archival footage and CGI animations to examine how American leaders have responded to reports of genocide, war crimes and mass atrocities after the fall of the Soviet Union.
Among those interviewed are five figures who served as Secretary of State: James Baker, Madeleine Albright, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton. In his review for The Washington Post, Michael O’Sullivan describes the effectiveness of the interviews: “The discussions that take place on camera, in tastefully appointed suites, are frank and often offer fascinating insights into these dilemmas. But it is the sharply jarring — and dismayingly repetitive — footage of carnage that will stay with you long after the echoes of the...

Nearly 30 years after the vengeful spirit first haunted the big screen in 1992, the Candyman is back.
Serving as a “spiritual sequel” to the original supernatural slasher of the same name, Nia DaCosta’s “Candyman” — written by recent horror darling Jordan Peele — was met with mostly positive reviews.
Read some highlights of what critics are saying below:
Variety’s Owen Gleiberman:
But now “Candyman” has been remade, by the director Nia DaCosta, and what she has done is to make a horror movie that has its share of enthralling shocks, but one that’s rooted in a richer meditation on the social terror of the Candyman fable. The new “Candyman” references the plot of the original as a sinister fanfare of shadow puppets, as if to say, “That was mythology. This is reality.” It’s less a “slasher film” than a drama with a slasher in the middle of it.

AdoptAClassroom.org, the award-winning national non-profit organization that helps students and teachers get the materials they need to learn and achieve in the classroom, has teamed up for the fifth consecutive year with Burlington Stores, the national retailer delivering amazing deals to customers every time they shop.
Now through August 9th, customers are encouraged to donate a $1 or more at check out to support teachers and students within their store community and nationwide. Funds collected at Burlington’s more than 780 stores nationwide will help to offset the money teachers spend out of their own pockets on supplies for their classroom each school year.
Approximately 96 percent of teachers purchase school supplies using their own money, spending $750 a year on average, ensuring their students have the necessary items to be successful. Remote learning brought on by Covid-19 presented its own challenges and added expenses with 59 percent of teachers reporting students needing technology so they can learn remotely.

“The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard,” a sequel to the 2017 action comedy “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” is gunning for the top spot on U.S. box office charts.
That shouldn’t be a difficult feat, considering the Lionsgate film is this weekend’s only new nationwide release. “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard,” starring Salma Hayek, Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, is opening in 3,000 North American theaters on Wednesday and is projected to make $15 million through Sunday.
As one of the few exclusively theatrical releases, the film will be another interesting test case as the movie business recovers from the pandemic. “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” is the first comedy to be released on the big screen since the onset of Covid-19. The genre has increasingly fallen out of favor with moviegoers as superhero adventures and suspenseful thrillers rise in popularity.

Hey, Marvel Movie fans. The huge, new Marvel "Avengers: Endgame" movie officially hit theaters nationwide today, April 26, 2019, and a lot of the reviews are in from the top movie critics in the country. After skimming over a few of them, I can already see that most of them are quite positive. It got an overall 77 out of a possible 100 score over on the Metacritic.com site. In this article, we're going to reveal what a few of the top critics had to say. To get things started, Michael O'Sullivan from the Washington Post gave it a perfect 100 score, and he said Endgame is about acceptance and moving on. He stated, "If “Infinity War” was about failure, “Endgame” is, ironically, all about acceptance and moving on. After 11 long years, the Infinity Saga is finally, fulfillingly over. There is no post-credit scene. But oh, what a going-away party these old friends have thrown for themselves.
