Exclusive: Indie distributor and SVOD service Mubi is continuing its remarkable buying spree at Cannes 2021. The growing player has now taken rights from The Match Factory to Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Cannes Competition drama Memoria for Germany, Italy, Latin America and India.
Palme d’Or winner Weerasethakul is debuting his latest drama on the Croisette today. Tilda Swinton stars in the movie as Jessica a woman who travels from Scotland to Bogotá to visit her sister. Ever since being startled by a loud ‘bang’ at daybreak, she is unable to sleep. However, during her journey she befriends Agnes (Jeanne Balibar), an archaeologist studying human remains discovered within a tunnel under construction, and a fish scaler, Hernan (Elkin Diaz). As the day comes to a close, she is awakened to a sense of clarity.
Weerasethakul’s ninth feature is his first shoot outside his native Thailand.

Fan Bingbing stars as an emperor’s wife having her portrait painted in this artful yet inert period drama
This French-Chinese co-production about an earlier French-Chinese collaboration offers handsome pageantry amid its lavish recreation of 18th-century imperial court life, but it isn’t quite enough to compensate for a puttering narrative motor. Longtime Apichatpong Weerasethakul producer Charles de Meaux has turned director with a far eastern equivalent of Girl With a Pearl Earring – another decorous, ever so slightly sleepy matinee sit.
The film’s subject is Jean-Denis Attiret (played by Melvil Poupaud), a real-life French Jesuit missionary who spent half of his 60-odd years employed as the Chinese court painter. His trickiest commission, recalled here, came from the emperor’s bored wife (Fan Bingbing), thirsting to preserve an image that might turn her indifferent husband’s head.

As expected, Christopher Nolan’s keenly awaited “Tenet” topped the U.K. and Ireland box office over the past week, collecting £5,335,654 ($7.16 million), according to final numbers from Comscore.
Warner Bros. opened the late summer tentpole wide across 611 locations midweek. For many it was the first time they had returned to cinemas since they reopened after lockdown. Following a quiet start, collections picked up.
In second place, Disney holdover “Onward” gained 29%, collecting £185,028 from 454 sites. It now has a total of £6,657,744 from the territory.
However, if previews are included, the Disney release of “X-Men” universe property “The New Mutants” ranks second, collecting $296,233 from an unspecified number of U.K. screens on the Aug. 28-30 weekend, per boxofficemojo. Disney will open the film at more that 300 screens Sept. 4.
Vertigo U.K.’s “100% Wolf” gained 31% to collect £140,050 from 456 locations in its fifth week at cinemas.

The colors blend beautifully together, as do the exquisite sets and costumes, yet the East-meets-West historical drama The Lady in the Portrait (Le Portrait interdit) makes for a rather bland depiction of a French painter toiling in the imperial court of Qianlong Emperor, who ruled China throughout much of the 18th century.

Founder Karl Baumgartner is The Maestro of International Coproduction. He has been producing since 1991 and has at least two production companies, one of which is Pandora which goes back as a German distribution company to the 1950s and which with partner Reinhard Brundig is a partner in The Match Factory. In 1963 Baumie, as he is known to his friends, prebought Jarmisch's Down By Law which immediately put both Jarmisch and his producer Jim Stark into international play. - Whenever I watch my Charlie Chaplin films on disc it is the MK2 logo that I see before I pull out the title from the DVD shelf. A staple in the French cinema their library is filled with auteurs – including last year's Cannes presented Paranoid Park (Van Sant), Zhang Ke Jia's 24 City and Belge director Dominique Abel's Rumba. This year Mk2 bring Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos's Dog tooth and Mathias Gokalp's Nothing Personal in the sidebars and they have Abdellatif Kechiche's next (Black Venus) in production (the director gave us brilliant The Secret of the Grain in 2007/08) and they also have Patrice Chereau's long awaited film – Persecution starring names like Romain Duris and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Black Venus by Abdellatif Kechiche - Production Certified Copy by Abbas Kiarostami - Production Diamond 13 (Diamant 13) by Gilles Beat - Completed Inferno (L'enfer D'Henri Georges Clouzot) by Serge Bromberg
