Showtime has been going through downsizing and recalibration since the November ouster of longtime CEO David Nevins and the premium network’s inclusion in Paramount Media Networks President Chris McCarthy’s portfolio. There have been layoffs, series cancellations and an executive restructuring as McCarthy articulated the plans for the network, which will soon be rebranded as Paramount+ with Showtime. They include multiple TV universes built around some of Showtime’s biggest series, including multiple Dexter and Billions offshoots.
During the Morgan Stanley conference Wednesday, Paramount CEO Bob Bakish addressed the strategy and indicated that other Showtime series could be revisited too.
“We’re leaning into our Showtime franchises,” he said. “You could think of the slate as smaller, which will be less expensive, but also really giving the people what they want, which is more Showtime, maybe more Dexter, maybe more Ray Donovan, and really leaning into that.”

Paramount Global will raise the monthly subscription price for its rebranded streaming service Paramount+ with Showtime in the third quarter of 2023, executives said on an earnings conference call on Thursday after reporting fourth-quarter results that saw Paramount+ post strong subscriber gains in the fourth quarter thanks to such hit content as Top Gun: Maverick.
“We all know streaming represents incredible value for consumers and the Paramount Plus offering is far from the industry price leader. We are on the value end of the pricing spectrum. And so in 2023, we will raise prices both for Paramount Plus Premium and Essential, both in the U.S., and select international markets,” CEO Bob Bakish said on the call.

Paramount Global ended 2022 with more than 77 million streaming subscribers, the company said; nearly 56 million of those came from Paramount+. That means the core streamer added 9.9 million subs in the final quarter of the year, a record.
Unfortunately, overall operating income plummeted 93 percent in the fourth quarter to just 182 million (down from 2.664 billion in Q4 2021). Wall Street forecast the company would report fourth-quarter earnings of 24 cents per share on 8.16 billion in revenue. Paramount posted adjusted earnings of 8 cents per share on 8.131 billion in revenue, missing both benchmarks. Without those adjustments, Paramount Global swung to a loss.
Streaming revenue rose 30 percent, but expenses increased 25 percent. Movies had a similar, but more favorable, trajectory: Revenue was up 35 percent, but expenses increased 22 percent. Both revenue and expenses decreased by single digits in linear television, where advertising sales saw the most significant decline.

Only 10 episodes of The Gordita Chronicles were produced before HBO Max canceled the comedy last summer amid a pullback on live-action kids and family programming. But at least creator Claudia Forestieri felt good knowing that new viewers could still find the show on the streamer.
“I got several DMs from people who saw it in-flight on American Airlines, where a few episodes are still available, and they ended up finishing the season on HBO Max,” Forestieri told Deadline.
But the consolation prize of keeping the show on the platform was short-lived: less than five months after The Gordita Chronicles was canceled, all 10 episodes were removed as part of a library purge that impacted dozens of programs on HBO Max.
At least Forestieri wasn’t alone in getting the boot. In the last few months, scores of shows have been yanked from various platforms, including Westworld, Raised By Wolves, The Time Traveler’s Wife,...

MTV Entertainment Studios and Showtime’s creative leadership teams are merging, with four more executives being laid off as the latter company’s upcoming consolidation with Paramount+ looms. Nina L. Now, Netflix and Showtime didn’t literally trade the shows for each other, but negotiations for the placement of both shows were apparently occurring parallel to each other, with news happening to break on the same day. “Ripley,” which was first ordered to series in September 2019 and stars Andrew Scott, has reportedly begun post-production on its eight-episode season. “Uncoupled” starring Neil Patrick Harris premiered its first season last July, and was canceled by Netflix last month.
Sources at Netflix confirmed to IndieWire that “Ripley” will premiere on the streamer. Sources at Showtime confirmed to IndieWire that “Uncoupled” has been picked up at the network.

“Uncoupled,” the romantic dramedy starring Neil Patrick Harris, has been revived by Showtime after being axed by Netflix last month in yet another move indicative of the premium network’s new strategy for original series.
News of the move comes after it was announced earlier on Friday that “Ripley,” the highly anticipated drama starring Andrew Scott, was in the final stages of moving to Netflix. Also recently, the completed first season of “Three Women,” with Shailene Woodley, was being eyed for a pickup at Starz after Showtime pulled the plug.

A long-gestating Showtime series based on Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels will no longer air on Showtime.
The drama, titled Ripley and starring Andrew Scott as the title character, is instead set to land at Netflix, pending details of a deal being finalized. The change comes as Showtime is set to merge with Paramount+ and will refocus on building out franchises of its most successful series, including Billions and Dexter.
Reps for Showtime and Netflix declined to comment.
Showtime gave Ripley a series order in 2019, with Oscar winner Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List, HBO’s The Night Of) writing and directing all eight episodes. Scott plays Tom Ripley, a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York who’s hired by a wealthy man to go to Italy and try to convince his vagabond son, Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn), to return home. Three Women has a new home. Starz has picked up the drama following Showtime's cancellation, per THR. Episodes had already been filmed when decided to shelve the series last month.
When Paramount Global's Chris McCarthy took over the reins at Showtime and other channels, he announced plans to focus on turning the channel's popular shows into global franchises. Several underperforming shows were dropped. The channel will become Paramount+ With Showtime and this week announced new series related to Dexter and Billions are in the works.
Starring Shailene Woodley, DeWanda Wise, Betty Gilpin, Gabrielle Creevy, Blair Underwood, and John Patrick Amedori, the Three Women series is based on the book by Lisa Taddeo. The series tells the story of a group of women looking to radically change their lives.

He’s received eight Oscar nominations – including the rare Pawd – and won twice: as supporting actor for “Syriana” (2006) and as a producer on Best Picture victor “Argo” (2013). But George Clooney has never taken home an Emmy statuette, unless you count his special Bob Hope Humanitarian Award in 2010 (which we don’t).
However, Clooney will now have another prime opportunity to be honored with the announcement that Showtime has given a straight-to-series order to the political thriller series “The Department,” with Clooney attached to direct and executive produce along with partner Grant Heslov through their Smokehouse Pictures banner. Three years ago, an adaptation of Lisa Taddeo’s novel Three Women ignited a bidding war before landing at Showtime with what sources say at the time was one of the biggest deals the premium cable network had ever made. Today, the drama starring Shailene Woodley that was eyed for a 2022 debut jumped to rival network Starz as Showtime — now part of Chris McCarthy’s sprawling purview at Paramount Global — pivots toward the Yellowstone franchise model that has driven viewers to Paramount+.
In a Jan. 30 memo to staff outlining a rebranding of the pay cable network to “Paramount+ With Showtime,” McCarthy (who oversees Paramount Network, MTV and Comedy Central, among others) pointed to “turning our hit shows into global hit franchises” and integrating the brand’s content into the premium tier of Paramount+ With Showtime. George Clooney will be venturing behind the camera once again to take the helm of Showtime’s political thriller series ‘The Department.’
Based on the series ‘The Bureau,’ “it will follow in the great tradition of ‘Homeland,’ one of the most successful and brand-defining shows at Showtime,” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime and Paramount Media. “Just as ‘Homeland’ elevated global espionage to new heights, ‘The Department’ will take viewers even deeper into a world of intrigue and subterfuge with complicated characters who struggle with their own demons as they fight existential threats to the nation and the world.”
The show centres on “the daily life and missions of agents within France’s principal external security service. It focuses on the ‘Bureau of Legends,’ responsible for training and handling deep-cover agents on long-term missions in areas with French interests. Days after Showtime cut bait on the already completed series “Three Women” starring Shailene Woodley, Starz has swooped in to acquire and rescue the show, as first reported in THR. However, an individual with knowledge told IndieWire that negotiations for the rights to the show were still underway.
THR also reported that “Three Women,” which is based on the book by Lisa Taddeo, was also shopped to HBO and Amazon before it landed at Starz.
Starz had no comment.
Though it’s already finished principal production, Showtime followed a trend that began with “Batgirl,” in which streamers and networks cut their losses and take tax write-offs for already completed or in-the-works projects. Should a deal close, “Three Women” would add to Starz’s previously rescuing the upcoming second season of “Minx,” which first premiered on HBO last year. That show was produced by Starz’s parent company, Lionsgate TV.

Showtime’s loss is Starz’s gain.
Lionsgate-backed premium cabler Starz is rescuing Three Women, the Shailene Woodley-fronted drama that Showtime dropped following Chris McCarthy’s arrival at the network. Sources say the series was shopped to multiple outlets, including HBO and Amazon, before landing at Starz.
Reps for Starz declined comment.
Paramount Global-owned Showtime originally snagged rights to the book in 2019 following a fierce bidding war. Showtime, then under David Nevins’ oversight, handed out a straight-to-series order to the drama which was eyed to premiere in 2022.
Following Nevins’ departure from Paramount Global, McCarthy was given oversight of Showtime and last week announced a rebranding of the network to Paramount+ With Showtime with an emphasis on franchises. Those plans were further revealed Monday with multiple Dexter and Billions offshoots in various stages of development.

Last week, it was said that Showtime wouldn’t be ordering another season of the Dexter revival Dexter: New Blood – which made a lot of sense, given what happened in the season finale. Clyde Phillips, who served as showrunner on the first four seasons of Dexter and on Dexter: New Blood, said he would be interested in working on a show called Harrison, which would follow the story of Dexter’s son… and now People reports that Phillips is going to have the chance to tell a story that revolves around Harrison. But apparently the show isn’t going to be called Harrison. Instead, it’s being referred to as “a new version” of Dexter: New Blood. So Dexter: New Blood will continue after all, with the new season set to depict the ongoing emergence of Dexter’s son Harrison.

Dexter: New Blood may have ended with Dexter Morgan’s death, but the idea of Michael C. Hall’s character will return to TV screens soon enough. Hall’s involvement in Showtime’s planned New Blood Season 2 and the prequel series Origins isn’t confirmed yet. But the network has shared some details about the second season of New Blood and the serial killer’s prequel story. Here’s what we know about the next season of Dexter: New Blood and the prequel series Dexter: Origins.

Showtime’s taking a deep dive into the world of Dexter, the serial killer who kills serial killers, with an origin series and more of Dexter: New Blood. The origin story, currently titled Dexter: Origins but that may change, will examine Dexter Morgan’s backstory.
Per Showtime: “Dexter: Origins will dramatize young Dexter Morgan at the outset of his transition into the avenging serial killer he would become. Set in the Miami that was a hotbed of real serial killers of his time, the show will begin as Dexter graduates college to join Miami Metro, where he meets younger versions of many of the characters we came to know in the original Dexter. And, of course, the show will also focus on Dexter’s family, including a very-much-alive Harry and a very formidable, teenage Deb.”

As an actor, you can count on George Clooney to deliver the goods -- whether that means flashing that legendary, mischievous smile of his, or buttoning down the charm to play a more conflicted and possibly amoral character. As a director, however, you can never be too sure which Clooney you're going to get. There's the one who gave us the fascinating "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and the riveting "Good Night, and Good Luck." Then there's the one behind the political thriller "The Ides of March" and the apocalyptic survival drama "The Midnight Sky," both of which have their merits but are hurt by weak stories. Finally, we have the Clooney who helmed stuff like "The Monuments Men" and "Suburbicon," which are baffling misfires given the wealth of talent involved in making them.

There’s drama back at the ranch.
Matthew McConaughey is in talks with Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan for a spinoff series, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The negotiations are described as ongoing with no deal yet struck, but the idea is for the Interstellar actor to lead a new series set within the Yellowstone universe.
The news comes as Deadline reports that Paramount Network may be moving to end its franchise-leader Yellowstone early due to scheduling battles with star Kevin Costner.
Costner reportedly demanded to only work for a single week on the second half of season five, which is returning this summer. The first half of the season aired its midseason finale Jan. 1. The episode set up a potentially deadly battle ahead between Costner’s character and his son, played by Wes Bentley.

When Showtime becomes Paramount+ With Showtime, the service will hone in on some of its established franchises.
Showtime boss Chris McCarthy spoke to The Wall Street Journal about the future, and there are some big swings.
For one, the Billions franchise is becoming a universe with spinoffs titled Millions and Trillions.
That's the working title for those shows, and unless Showtime wants to cause some confusion, they will probably change it if the shows reach the production stage.
There are -- reportedly -- four spinoffs in the works for Billions. If most of those shows make it on the air, they will effectively become the Power universe of Showtime.
Starz has had plenty of success by expanding the Power universe, but it's a bit hard to believe that Billions could reach the same success.
The good news is that Billions co-creators Brian Koppelman and David Levien are on board to bring this universe to life.

Last week, we heard that Showtime was considering ordering a prequel series to their popular show Dexter, which finished its eight season initial run back in 2013, then recently came back for a new season (called Dexter: New Blood) that appeared to wrap it up for good. Now Showtime has taken the prequel series a step beyond consideration – The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that they have gone ahead and ordered the series.
Clyde Phillips, who served as showrunner on the first four seasons of Dexter and returned to the job for Dexter: New Blood, will be overseeing the Dexter franchise for the network. Yes, they’re talking franchise now. The prequel series isn’t the only Dexter-related project they expect to be working on in the near future. Other possibilities include “spinoffs that trace the back stories of some of the show’s most iconic characters. This includes John Lithgow’s memorable Trinity Killer.

Spinoffs of “Billions” and “Dexter” are being planned at Showtime as the premium cabler rebrands to Paramount+ With Showtime and reconfigures its programming.

Chris McCarthy, the Paramount Global exec who was handed oversight of Showtime last year, is doubling down on his franchise plans for the premium cable network.
The exec who is credited with growing Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone franchise for the streamer is expanding two of Showtime’s prized dramas — Dexter and Billions — with multiple offshoots in the works, sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter.
The linear cable network is developing as many as four series connected to the Billions franchises — including Millions and Trillions — from exec producers Brian Koppelman and David Levien. The Billions co-creators have been in business with an overall deal at Showtime since 2019 and the finance drama now ranks as the cabler’s longest-running scripted original series.

Showtime has said, “Mais oui!” to a straight-to-series order for an adaptation of the hit French spy drama Le Bureau des Légendes, with George Clooney on board to executive-produce as well as direct.
Created by Eric Rochant and airing for five seasons from April 2015 to 2020, Le Bureau centered on the daily life and missions of agents within France’s principal external security service — the “Bureau of Legends” — who are responsible for training and handling deep-cover agents on long-term missions in areas with French interests. Living under false identities for years, these agents’ missions are to identify and recruit good intelligence sources.

Showtime, er, Paramount+ with Showtime, is facing a major overhaul. The Paramount Global-owned premium-cable channel is shifting its focus to franchises, which is in turn bringing about some very questionable names beyond just the platform itself. Among the plans is to turn “Billions” into a universe with spinoffs working-titled — wait for it — “Millions” and “Trillions.”
Much like the new name for Showtime itself, we feel obligated to point out that this is not a joke. The Wall Street Journal, via an interview with Showtime boss Chris McCarthy, first reported the plans for the new Showtime. A spokesperson for McCarthy confirmed the news of all the series ordered and planned, which also includes another “Billions” spinoff set in Miami (and possibly even a fourth “Billions” spinoff) and a “Dexter” prequel series, for IndieWire.
The South Florida-set “Billions” spinoff sounds like it will have a crypto-currency angle. Another potential series in the franchise has a London setting.

Days after Showtime, which is currently merging with Paramount+, pulled multiple titles from their platform, the streaming service has followed suit.
Jordan Peelee’s “The Twilight Zone,” which aired for two seasons between 2019 and 2020 before being canceled, has been removed, along with all three seasons of “The Real World: Homecoming.” Other projects no longer available include “Coyote,” “No Activity,” “Guilty Party” and “The Harper House.”
“The Real World: Homecoming,” which launched in 2021 with the New York cast, returned for two more seasons, reuniting the casts of Los Angeles and New Orleans. The Bunim/Murray Productions and MTV Entertainment Studios produced project was well-received by critics and no cancelation announcement has been made.
On Jan. 30, Showtime removed multiple titles, including “American Gigolo” and “Let the Right One In,” both of which were not renewed for a second season, both seasons of Jim Carrey’s “Kidding,” and solo seasons of “American Rust,...
