Mad About You might have sharply focused on the relationship between Paul and Jamie Buchman, but those closest to the couple were integral to the show’s success. Paul and Jamie’s friends and family made regular appearances. Those appearances wove a rich tapestry of interconnected storylines that made the show special. Jamie’s best friend and former boss, Fran Devanow, portrayed by Leila Kenzle, was an important fixture in the original series. Jamie’s sister, Lisa Stemple, and Paul’s cousin, Ira Buchman, were equally important. Lis and Ira both returned for the 2019 reboot. Fran, however, was nowhere to be found. There was a good reason for that. Leila Kenzle retired from acting after Mad About You.

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will return to its normal two-hour live format on TNT and TBS. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute. The 2021 segment saluted 55 people because they had responsibility for 14 months instead of 12.
Among that group will certainly be previous SAG president Ed Asner, who was also a life achievement award recipient. That honorary award was also presented to Sidney Poitier and Betty White, who both died this past year.

When Greg Louganis, 57, first submitted his DNA to ancestry.com in late 2016—and confirmed the identity of his birth father, Fouvale Lutu — the Olympic diver never thought he’d find his birth mother as well.
“I didn’t realize I would pop up on other people’s pages as a relative,” says Louganis, who was given up for adoption at birth.
But in May, a woman reached out via ancestry.com and told him, “I think you might be my aunt’s son.”
On Mother’s Day he called his mom, retired medical assistant Cynthia Harris, 73, for the first time.

The Tribute Artist by Charles Busch Directed by Carl Andress 59E59 Theaters, NYC Through March 29, 2014 Towards the end of this uproarious farce by veteran playwright and actor Charles Busch, Mr. Busch--as Jimmy Nichols, a long-in-the-tooth “female impressionist tribute artist” (a/k/a unemployed drag performer)--delivers a line that in any other play, comedy or otherwise, would befuddle the audience due to its complete nonsense. Proclaimed in tones of voice that would, in an era long gone by, indicate the pronouncement of a grand life-transforming revelation, Jimmy declares “The more honest you are, the more people believe you.” Without a doubt, only Charles Busch could make such an utterance not only appear reasonable, but in the process bring the house down shrieking with laughter.
The Tribute Artist could be designated a sort of penultimate culmination of Charles Busch’s three-decade career. In many wondrous permutations over the years, Mr. Busch has honored,...

Conti is Gowan McGland, a creatively blocked Scottish poet who ekes out a day-to-day existence by exploiting the generosity of strangers in an affluent New England suburb. His trick is to recite his verse to various arts groups and women’s clubs, bedding other men’s wives, and, hell, even steal tips from waiters at expensive restaurants. It’s not much of a life, but that’s all he has, until he meets and falls for young co-ed Geneva Spofford (Kelly McGillis, The Innkeepers). While Geneva has strong feelings too, she has everything to lose from a relationship with a drunken deadbeat poet who’s unable to hold a job.

When Cynthia Harris was offered the role of Sylvia Buchman, the comic yenta mom on "Mad About You," an executive apologized to her. After all, Harris was best known for her BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) nominated performance as the alluring Wallis Simpson on the British mini-series "Edward and Mrs. Simpson." In his mind Sylvia was a comedown. But more important, he failed to understand that Harris liked playing diverse roles.Though Harris doesn't foresee tackling a Sylvia type again, she found her five seasons on the popular sitcom delightful. But then most of her career has been fun thanks largely to the range of parts she's tackled, not least the 42 dissimilar characters she's taken on with Tact/The Actors Company Theatre, a New York-based operation she co-founded 20 years ago. To this day Harris continues to serve as its co-artistic director. The company's central mission is to.
