The trailer for The CW’s new procedural introduces Victoria and Darby Spencer who are, despite the show’s title, definitely not sisters. The Spencer Sisters stars Lea Thompson (Back to the Future) as Victoria, a bestselling author and mom of Darby. Both mother and daughter share an interest in solving crimes, and together they take on cases that stump the police.
Episode one, “The Scholar’s Snafu,” will air on October 4, 2023. New season one episodes arrive on Wednesdays at 9pm Et/Pt.
Joining Lea Thompson and Stacey Farber in what’s described as a “female-led, lighthearted procedural” are:
Thomas Antony Olajide (Learn To Swim) as Zane Graham, Darby’s high school best friend and local cop. Edward Ruttle (Arctic Air) as Dr. Lucas Collins, Darby’s high school flame. Husein Madhavji (Saving Hope) as Alastair Dhumal, Victoria’s It Consultant (a.k.a. hacker). Ayesha Mansur Gonsalves (Sort Of) as Sarita Stark,...

The network has picked up The Spencer Sisters, a Canadian drama starring Caroline in the City star Lea Thompson and Superman & Lois’ Stacey Farber, for its fall lineup.
It is the latest Canadian series that it has acquired, this time from eOne, as the Nexstar-owned company’s scripted strategy becomes a little clearer.
The Spencer Sisters, which aired its first 10-part earlier this year on CTV (see trailer below), follows a mother and daughter duo who team up to start a private detective agency. It pairs mystery novelist Victoria Spencer (Thompson) and her daughter Darby Spencer (Farber) who are mistaken as sisters as they tackle puzzling cases.

An episode of Canadian drama “Nurses” that aired on NBC earlier this month has been pulled from the broadcaster’s digital platforms following backlash over the installment’s storyline about an Orthodox Jewish patient refusing a bone graft from a potentially “Arab” or female donor, a spokesperson for the network tells TheWrap.
“The writers of this scene check all the boxes of ignorance and pernicious negative stereotypes, right down to the name of the patient, Israel – pious and all,” the Simon Wiesenthal Center said in a statement earlier Wednesday. “In one scene, NBC has insulted and demonized religious Jews and Judaism. Overreaction? Orthodox Jews are targeted for violent hate crimes — in the city of New York, Jews are number one target of hate crimes in U.S.. This is no slip of the tongue. It was a vile, cheap attack masquerading as TV drama. What’s NBC going to do about it?...

The Canadian import boom continues after NBC on Tuesday said it has picked up the medical drama Nurses.
The network acquired U.S. rights to the hospital drama from eOne and Icf Films. It will add the show, which features Riverdale’s Tiera Skovbye, to its primetime lineup in December.
It marks the latest Canadian show to be picked up by a U.S. network following deals for fellow medical drama Transplant, also with NBC, and procedural Coroner, which was picked up by the CW, as networks continue to look for already produced English-language content to deal with the fallout that Covid-19 has had on production schedules.
Nurses, originally commissioned by Canada’s Global TV, was one of a number of Canadian shows highlighted by Deadline back in May that was expected to be picked up by a U.S. network.

Canadian legal drama series Burden of Truth and Diggstown will be back for another go-round.
CBC has renewed Burden of Truth for a fourth season, with production to begin in Winnipeg, Manitoba, later this summer. Diggstown has been renewed for a third season with shooting set to begin in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in early 2021.
“Both Burden of Truth and Diggstown look at the legal world through a distinct lens by highlighting systemic corruption, injustice and discrimination in the legal system, including anti-Indigenous and anti-Black racism,” said Sally Catto, General Manager of Entertainment, Factual & Sports at CBC. “These two series offer a unique take on the traditional crime procedural, and continue to engage audiences across the country each season with strong performances and original storylines.”

Suspense drama series Ransom, which has aired on CBS in the U.S., Global in Canada and TF1 in France, will not be getting a fourth season. The series’ team announced the end of the show to fans Wednesday.
“We’re joyful & lucky to have shared these past three seasons with you,” the post on the series’ official Twitter account reads. “Unfortunately, we have to bid the CriRes team farewell. We loved telling stories about strong, smart characters resolving conflicts with words instead of violence.”
For CBS, Ransom was a low-cost acquisition, which the network had been using to keep the lights on Saturdays. According to sources, it was the producers’ decision to end the series over funding issues.

“Ransom” has been canceled after a three-season run on CBS in the U.S. and Global in Canada.
“We’re joyful & lucky to have shared these past three seasons with you,” the show’s official Twitter account wrote Wednesday. “Unfortunately, we have to bid the CriRes team farewell. We loved telling stories about strong, smart characters resolving conflicts with words instead of violence. Thank you for watching.”
An individual with knowledge of the situation tells TheWrap the cancellation did not come from CBS, and was due to the fact the producers behind “Ransom” — which is an internationally co-produced series — made the decision not to go forward with the show due to a lack of funding.

In an unusual move, Entertainment One plans to share TV pilot scripts for two Wattpad stories it’s adapting as series with the most passionate fans of the original tales — bringing them into the development process.
Under its partnership with Wattpad, the Toronto-based production and media company is developing shows based on dystopian drama “The Numbered” by Mj Gary and time-travel romance “Kairos” by Leigh Heasley. EOne moved forward on the pair of projects after looking at dozens of potential candidates, flagged in batches of 10 per month by Wattpad out of the 500 million-plus stories on the story-sharing community. Those were culled based on eOne’s criteria centered around Ya and sci-fi genres and female-driven dramas.
To adapt the stories, eOne is bringing in its own scriptwriters — which is a standard Hollywood practice. For “The Numbered,” it has tapped Sabrina Nouadir and the company is looking to line up a writer for “Kairos.

Just ahead of its fall season rollout, which launches tonight, the CW is already looking ahead, announcing its 2019 summer programming lineup. It features six original series — one new and five returning — including three acquired dramas, as the CW has renewed all of its summer 2018 series. It is one of the CW’s biggest slates of original shows specifically designated for the off-season. The network has acquired British action drama Bulletproof from Sky Vision and ordered second seasons of legal drama Burden of Truth, starring Kristin Kreuk, and fantasy-adventure series The Outpost. The CW has also ordered new seasons of the hit magic series Penn & Teller: Fool Us and Masters Of Illusion, and the classic improv comedy Whose Line Is It Anyway? all set for premiere in summer 2019. Premiere dates and times will be announced later.
Bulletproof, from Vertigo Films and Company Pictures, follows two undercover cops, Bishop and Pike as they chase down hardened criminals in London’s East End. Pike is an aspirational family man, the son of a decorated police officer who is determined to follow in his father’s footsteps, but not be in his shadow. Meanwhile, Bishop grew up in care homes and on the streets, and never knew his father. Despite these differences Bishop and Pike are bonded by the same moral code and work brilliantly well together even when the chemistry between them looks set to explode.
Allan Niblo Michele Buck Judy Counihan Nick Love Noel Clarke, and Ashley Walters executive produce. The series was co-funded by Sky’s distribution arm, Sky Vision, who control international rights.
Burden Of Truth, starring Kristin Kreuk, is a serialized investigative drama about life-altering legal cases. IFC Films and Entertainment One produces in association with Eagle Vision Inc. with executive producers Ilana Frank, Adam Pettle, Jocelyn Hamilton, Linda Pope and Kristin Kreuk.
Created by Kynan Griffin and Jason Faller, The Outpost, a fantasy-adventure series from Electric Entertainment and Arrowstorm Entertainment, executive producers Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner, follows Talon (Jessica Green), the lone survivor of a race called the “Blackbloods.” In a lawless fortress on the edge of the civilized world, Talon must learn to master her supernatural powers, and ally with a Queen who has been in hiding to defend the world against a fanatical religious dictator. Jake Stormoen, Imogen Waterhouse and Anand Desai-Barochia alsp star.
The Outpost also is executive produced by Electric Entertainment’s team of Marc Roskin and Rachel Olschan-Wilson and by Arrowstorm Entertainment’s team of Jason Faller and Kynan Griffin, the team behind the cult favorite Mythica films. Jennifer Griffin of Arrowstorm Entertainment is also producing.
Penn & Teller: Fool Us is a one-hour competition series celebrating magic and featuring the legendary duo Penn & Teller. Hosted by actress Alyson Hannigan (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), the series is created and executive produced by Penn Jillette, Teller, Peter Adam Golden and Andrew Golder in association with 1/17 Productions and September Films (part of Dcd Media).
Hosted by actor Dean Cain (Supergirl), Masters of Illusion features amazing magic performed by cutting-edge illusionists and escape artists, and performers in each episode displaying skills ranging from perplexing interactive mind magic to hilarious comedy routines. The series hails from Associated Television International with executive producers David McKenzie, Gay Blackstone, David Martin and Al Schwartz, along with co-executive producer Jim Romanovich.
Whose Line Is It Anyway?, based on the hit UK format and hosted by comedian Aisha Tyler, features cast members Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady and Colin Mochrie. Along with a special guest comedian in each episode, the cast members put their comedic skills to the test through a series of spontaneous improv games. Series creators Dan Patterson and Mark Leveson executive produce with Jimmy Mulville, Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady and Colin Mochrie. Kristin Kreuk is coming home.
The former “Smallville” and “Beauty and the Beast” star will return to The CW this summer, as the network has acquired the U.S. rights to the 10-episode Canadian legal drama “Burden of Truth” from Entertainment One. Created by Brad Simpson, the series is the latest addition to The CW’s growing slate of original programming for the summer 2018 season.
“Burden of Truth,” which premiered in January on the CBC, stars Kreuk as a big city lawyer who returns to her hometown to take on what she thinks is a simple case, only to find herself in a fight for justice for a group of sick girls. The series also stars Peter Mooney (“Rookie Blue”), Alex Carter (“NCIS”), Benjamin Ayres (“Saving Hope”), Nicola Correia-Damude (“Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments”), Meegwun Fairbrother (“Hemlock Grove”) and newcomer Star Slade.

Most viewers will know Shenae Grimes-Beech as Annie, the girl next door in Beverly Hills spin–off 90210 or youngster Darcy Edwards on Degrassi: The Next Generation. But she tells Deadline that her latest role, playing a street-smart cop with a messy personal life in procedural The Detail allows her to stop being typecast and marks the next chapter of her acting career.
The Detail is one of the hot titles for international producer and distributor Entertainment One (eOne) at Mip TV, which kicks off this weekend and the company will be hoping that the show travels around the world with the same success as other North American procedurals.
