Carlos Santana’s definition of magic is simple: “Magic is when you command the elements to capture people’s hearts,” he says in the trailer for the forthcoming documentary Carlos. The film, which is set for a general theatrical release on Sept. 29, shows that the legendary musician doesn’t just believe in magic — he creates it.

The life of Robbie Robertson — who died Wednesday morning after a long illness — can neatly be divided into everything that happened before The Last Waltz and everything that happened afterward. The 1976 all-star concert at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom marked the end of his career with the Band, the end of his years as a touring musician, and the start of life as an elder statesman of rock.
He went out by throwing one of the biggest concerts in rock history featuring Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Neil Diamond,...

From 1965 to 1975, San Francisco saw the rise of the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Sly and the Family Stone, Janis Joplin, Big Brother & the Holding Company, Steve Miller, Santana, Moby Grape and more. A new two-part docuseries, San Francisco Sounds: A Place, examines this decade that propelled Bay Area musicians into the national scene.
The documentary is directed by Alison Ellwood and Anoosh Tertzakian, and comes from the same team behind the three-time Emmy-nominated documentary Laurel Canyon: A Place in Time including Jigsaw Productions, The Kennedy/Marshall Company, Amblin Television, and Jeff Pollack.

In 1976, Martin Scorsese prepared to film The Last Waltz, a concert film about Canadian group The Band that featured artists like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell. Things were going well until intermission when Dylan announced that he no longer wanted to be in the film. As Warner Bros. had only agreed to finance the movie if Dylan was in it, the news was catastrophic to Scorsese.
Martin Scorsese was not happy with Bob Dylan while filming ‘The Last Waltz’
The Band’s farewell concert, The Last Waltz, became the subject of a Scorsese film. The documentary showed the group’s impact and welcomed artists like Muddy Waters, Van Morrison, and Eric Clapton to perform with them. The big draw for Warner Bros., though, was Dylan. They agreed to pay for the film if Dylan appeared in it.
For the first half of the concert, all went to plan.

Long before Live Nation, Clear Channel, Ticketmaster, Stubhub, service fees, gold-circle seats, and anything that even resembles the live music industry as we know it today, there was Ron Delsener. The 87-year-old concert promoter has been booking shows in New York City going all the way back to the summer of 1964, when he brought the Beatles to Forest Hills Tennis Stadium for two nights. (Tickets were $5.50 plus a 45-cent federal tax.)
In the decades that followed, Delsener grew into the undisputed live music kingpin of New York, booking thousands upon...

“Carlos” has one of the best openings I’ve ever seen — or heard — in a music documentary. We hear Carlos Santana, waxing philosophical and wise (as he’s prone to do). Intercut with his words, at throbbing intervals of about 20 seconds (and at top volume), are the iconic organ-and-bass notes — Bom Bom!…Bom Bom! — that open “Oye Como Va,” the 1971 hit by Santana. I’ll confess that “Oye Como Va” is one of those classic-rock radio staples I feel like I’ve heard more times in my life than I ever need to. (Sort of like “Moondance” and “Tempted” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again.”) Yet “Carlos,” instead of assaulting you with the song, severs those four notes from it (Bom Bom!…Bom Bom!) and blows them up into a piece of pop art, like a Warhol sound painting. It asks us to hear the magic of what Carlos Santana...

There is a reason for the Carlos Santana documentary, “Carlos,” to take its title not from the guitar legend’s last name and that of his eponymous band. The film, which received a gala world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, focuses more on Santana’s biographical details recounted previously in his 2014 memoir, “The Universal Tone,” than his illustrious career. Of course, music is inseparable from the life of a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer born into a musical family, but the documentary is more about wrestling with success, spirituality, addiction and childhood trauma from sexual abuse.
Filmmaker Rudy Valdez unfurls a chronological narrative, from Santana’s formative years in Tijuana, Mexico, to his triumphant 1999 “Supernatural” album, employing archives of photos, concert footage, talk-show appearances, home videos and a few newly conducted interviews, including a roundtable of Santana’s immediate family members. But amid the narrative progression Valdez has occasionally...

Documentary studio Xtr and Crooked Highways are teaming up on “Merch!”
The upcoming documentary will look at the origin and impact of music merchandise through the stories of pivotal musicians, designers, fans, and entrepreneurs who helped commodify artists. The non-fiction feature will trace the history of these products, starting with the first Elvis Presley concert t-shirt. That continued with the psychedelic tie-dyed look popularized by the Grateful Dead and the skull-heavy iconography of Metallica and Megadeth. It extends to the present day, when artists like Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Harry Styles and Billie Eilish continue to mint money through imagery, posters, clothes and more.
“Merch!” will feature archival footage and will tell the story of the late merchandising legend, Dell Furano, as well as his brother Dave Furano, who co-founded Winterland Productions with Bill Graham. They witnessed merchandise transform from niche products for die-hard concert-goers to a massive revenue stream...
