We have just received word from ground zero at Fantastic Fest that John Hyams, director of the recent Universal Solider films Regeneration and Day of Reckoning, will direct the upcoming remake of the cult film Maniac Cop. Innocent people are being brutally murdered on the streets of New York City by a uniformed police officer. As the death toll rises and City Hall attempts a cover-up, Frank McCrae heads the investigation. A young cop, Jack Forrest, finds himself under arrest as the chief suspect, having been the victim of a set-up by the real killer and a mysterious woman phone-caller. Forrest, his girlfriend Theresa, and McCrae set out to solve the puzzle before the Maniac Cop can strike again. (IMDb summary for the original film)There has not been...

“You have the right to remain silent…forever!” was the tagline of 1988′s Maniac Cop, which starred horror genre favorites Bruce Campbell and Tom Atkins. In director William Lustig’s horror-crime flick, even the most law-abiding citizen wasn’t safe from being targeted by a New York City serial killer in a police officer’s uniform. Now a new cop-themed tagline may be on the horizon for Maniac Cop fans, as the remake of Lustig’s film looks to be picking up steam.
According to ScreenDaily, Ed Brubaker (who worked on the Captain America and Fatale comic book series) has written the script for the Maniac Cop remake. Picked up by the production company Wild Bunch, the remake already has two recognizable producers, and a director will be announced:
“The production is spearheaded by Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn, who is producing alongside William Lustig, director of the original, and Wild Bunch.

“Shooting Cordell is only good for getting his attention!”
Director William Lustig’s Maniac Cop 2 (1990) picked up right where Maniac Cop (1988) left off and did a great job of continuing the chaos. Both films even had the same tag line: “You have the right to remain silent . . . Forever!” The sequel has badge-wearing wacko Matt Cordell (Robert Z’dar), the crazed, murderous “Maniac Cop” of the first film (now even more monstrously disfigured after a brutal stay in prison) teaming up with Turkel (Leo Rossi), a crazed degenerate serial killer on ‘a crusade against the whores of the world’, who likes to murder strippers. They’re up against frenzied, chain smoking NYPD detective Sean McKinney (movie veteran Robert Davi), who is just one step ahead of a nervous breakdown and feisty police psychologist Susan Riley (the gorgeous Claudia Christian). Sean McKinney’s nerves don’t get much relief when officers...

Maniac Cop director William Lustig and writer Larry Cohen are working on a new Maniac Cop movie, with Drive‘s Nicolas Winding Refn expected to come on board as a producer. While talking to Daily Grindhouse, Larry Cohen had the following to say:
“It’s going to be more a prequel than anything else, I am really excited to come back to this world especially since Nick is going to be a part of it… Nick (Winding Refn) has been talking to us about it for a while now and I had an idea that would work so we’re going to do it.”
The article said that the movie would still keep the feel of the first three film, but will have a bigger budget. While the project is moving forward, William Lustig mentioned that the project isn’t 100% signed off on at this time. For those of you...

“Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn is a hot commodity right now, and from all appearances he’s having a damn fine time of it, doing whatever the hell he wants. His next film is a modern, Muay-Thai western (“Only God Forgives”), followed by remake of “Logan’s Run”. Now he’s throwing his weight behind a remake of “Maniac Cop”. That’s right, I said “Maniac Cop”. Yes, That “Maniac Cop”. Refn would serve as a producer and join a team that includes Larry Cohen and William Lustig, the writer and director, respectively, of the 1988 original. For those of you who don’t remember, here’s a refresher about the first film in the “Maniac Cop” franchise (there were three): Innocent people are being brutally murdered on the streets of New York City by a uniformed police officer. As the death toll rises, Detective Frank McCrae heads the investigation.

William Lustig’s late 80’s “horror” film, written by Larry Cohen, is now out on DVD/BluRay courtesy of the fine folks at Synapse Films. The blurb on the Blu-ray case claims Maniac Cop is regarded as a classic of the genre, but is it? I would be hard pressed to even call it a horror movie, but more of an action/thriller/revenge film.
The film concerns itself with Jack Forrest (Bruce Campbell) a young police officer with marital troubles who becomes the prime suspect in his wife’s murder. But it gets worse…people have reported seeing a rogue cop attacking and murdering people, and naturally our hero is put on the top of the suspect list for those crimes as well.
Of course, the real solution can’t be this simple, so it’s up to detective Frank McCrae (Tom Atkins) and Forrest’s associate Theresa Mallory...

You have the right to remain silent… forever! It should surprise no one that Larry Cohen came up with the tag line above before a single word of his script for Maniac Cop was written. It’s beyond perfect, and it sums up the attitude behind the film pretty damn well. Director William Lustig had been best known for his Joe Spinell slasher, Maniac, so Cohen worked his magic and scripted this film with a similar sounding title but a more blackly comic tone. The result is a genre “classic” that spawned two sequels of varying quality and remains an entertaining slice of horror cinema. Arrow Video in the UK released Maniac Cop to Blu-ray last month, and we gave it a test drive below. The Movie: A madman in blue is stalking the streets of New York City and killing seemingly ordinary citizens. Is he a rogue cop or a maniac dressed up to look like...

I have to admit, I’d never watched Maniac Cop before settling in to review it; in fact I received it by mistake one morning (there are enough Stu’s and Ste’s currently writing for WhatCulture! that we’re easy enough to mix up). It had only been at the front of my mind for a few hours before a friend brought it up as one of his favourite movies and so it was with a sense of fateful intrigue that I entered into the experience. One of the latest offerings from cult label Arrow Video, prized for their re-touches of old classics, Maniac Cop (directed by b-movie specialist William Lustig) comes back from the dead with a shiny new HD overhaul.
It’s got that special brand of eighties title, the kind that does exactly what it says on the tin – I’ll give...

We are huge fans of Synapse Films at Destroy the Brain. Don May Jr. and his assorted bunch of film misfits really cater to genre fans with quality releases.
