Sally Potter To Re-Release 2009 Feature ‘Rage’ As Series Of Instagram Posts To Mark 15th Anniversary
British filmmaker Sally Potter has set plans to re-release her 2009 feature Rage, starring Riz Ahmed, Lily Cole, Jude Law, and Judi Dench, as a series of posts on Instagram, to mark the film’s 15th anniversary.
Potter has said the movie will unravel over several “real-time” posts across seven days, starting February 23.
The film also stars Patrick J Adams, Jacob Cedergren, John Leguizamo, Eddie Izzard, David Oyelowo, Dianne Wiest, Steve Buscemi, Adriana Barraza, Simon Abkarian and Bob Balaban. The original concept in 2009 was for the film to be watched on smartphones. The synopsis reads: Michelangelo, an unseen schoolboy armed only with a mobile phone, goes behind the scenes at a New York fashion show for seven days in which an accident on the catwalk turns into a murder investigation, and his interviews with key players become a bitterly funny expose of an industry in crisis.

These formed the basis of Truffaut’s later book Alfred Hitchcock: A Definitive Study (1967). At Hitchcock’s instigation, the interviews were recorded by a sound engineer at Universal.
In total, the interviews lasted around 27 hours.
“It is going to be a film about film-making,” Jones said of the feature doc. “It is about the practice of film-making as a translation of emotion into images.”

Broken English
This review was written for the theatrical release of "Broken English".
NEW YORK -- Parker Posey again proves her necessity to the indie film world with her complicated performance in Zoe Cassavetes' feature debut. Demonstrating that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, the screenwriter-director has delivered a well-observed film boasting highly realistic performances and dialogue, if not plot elements. But it's Posey's fascinating portrayal of a thirtysomething Manhattan single woman looking for love that lifts the film above its "Sex and the City" predictabilities.
Posey plays Nora Wilder, who smoothly handles customer relations at a posh boutique hotel catering to the rich, famous and difficult. Still single -- a fact that she is constantly reminded of by her nagging mother (Gena Rowlands) -- Nora looks on with admiration at the seemingly perfect marriage of her best friend, Audrey (Drea de Matteo), and her adoring director husband (Tim Guinee).
The difficulties of singlehood are well-demonstrated by a couple of episodes. In the first, Nora succumbs to the charm of a famous actor (Justin Theroux) only to discover that the self-obsessed lout is dating his current co-star. In the second, she goes on a blind date -- set up by her mother, no less -- that proves disastrous when the ex of the man (Josh Hamilton) suddenly shows up.
Ready to give up, Nora then meets a handsome and perfect Frenchman, Julien (Melvil Poupaud), who boasts a sexy accent to go along with his perfectly angled fedora. Just as the relationship is staring to jell, however, he goes back home to Paris, with Nora eventually following in an impulsive attempt to continue the relationship.
The film is ultimately more effective in isolated scenes than with its overall narrative, which becomes particularly ineffective with the Parisian interlude and the highly contrived ending. But those scenes, depicting the poignancy of someone desperately looking for emotional as well as physical connection, provide equal measures of emotion and humor, and Posey is superbly equipped to handle them. Her complicated performance provides the film with a depth not always present in the script.

Vox3 betting on Alson's 'Bookie'
Vox3, the company behind the Nicole Kidman starrer Fur, has picked up the rights to Peter Alson's memoir Confessions of an Ivy League Bookie. Alson and David Greenwald are writing the screenplay, which Greenwald will direct. Jonathan Kesselman will produce under his newly formed production banner the Worldwide Media Conspiracy, along with Vox3 principals Andrew Fierberg, Christina Weiss Lurie and Steven Shainberg. Bookie centers on Alson when he was a down-and-out Harvard graduate who gets his real education while working as a bookie in Greenwich Village.

The Next Big Thing
A combination romantic comedy and satire of the New York art scene, "The Next Big Thing" doesn't live up to its title. Squandering a potentially juicy subject for ridicule, the film simply doesn't have the wit necessary to do it justice, relying instead on obvious jokes and stereotypical characterizations. Theatrical prospects look iffy, but the plethora of cast members familiar from television should ensure a decent life on video and cable.
The story revolves around the plight of struggling artist Gus Bishop (Chris Eigeman), whose girlfriend (Marin Hinkle) is about to walk out on him thanks to his inability to sell a single painting. On his way to a meeting with an important Manhattan art dealer (Farley Granger, making a welcome return to the screen and looking terrific), Gus gets mugged, and the crook promptly breaks into Gus' apartment and steals, among other things, one of his paintings.
When the crook, Deech (Jamie Harris), manages to pawn off the canvas on his landlord by claiming that the artist is a famous, reclusive Vietnam vet and victim of abuse, an idea is hatched. Deech and a reluctant Gus enter into a partnership with the idea of selling Gus' paintings at a premium, claiming they're the work of "Geoffrey Buonardi". Yes, this is the kind of comedy in which a funny name is lifted from a bottle of spaghetti sauce.
Naturally, the works of Buonardi become an art world sensation, commanding thousands of dollars and creating great interest in the unseen artist. This leads to the inevitable complications, involving a gorgeous art critic (Connie Britton) on whom Gus has a serious crush and a rapacious collector (Janet Zarish) with a tendency to bed the artists whose work she's interested in. Making things even worse are Gus' greedy girlfriend and a nosy private investigator (Mike Starr), who both want in on the action.
While the film's central conceit is serviceable, it hasn't been handled with any inventiveness, and the dialogue and characterizations rarely rise above the level of cliche. It's too bad, because several members of the cast have demonstrated in earlier efforts that they're clearly capable of garnering laughs. Eigeman, veteran of several Whit Stillman films and the ABC comedy series "It's Like, You Know ...", has great deadpan timing, but it's used to little effect here. The charming Britton and Hinkle are similarly wasted, and even normally reliable scene stealers like Starr seem uninspired.
