Biopics have been a dependable way for filmmakers to deliver a powerful story. There is always a set template attached with the biopics though. It’s either a rags to riches story or a cautionary tale about someone who fell from glory because of their vices. Which is the more interesting one? I feel the latter and yet there is a great warmth about an inspiring story where someone crossed great obstacles and tasted success. The new film The Hill is based on the life of baseball star Rickey Hill. With full access to all the intricate details about his life, this biopic has enough material to craft an inspiring story around his legacy. Rickey was born with a degenerative spine ailment and yet went on to be known as the ‘hardest hitter’ in baseball. He was a prodigy, but his career was cut short by his physical challenges. Overcoming...

In its second weekend in theaters, MGM and director Emma Seligman’s teen comedy Bottoms broke into the top ten films for the weekend (no. 7) on 715 screens, a major North America expansion from a 10-theater opening last week. An estimated $3 million gross for the three days, and $3.6 million for the four-day Labor Day holiday means the film will continue to expand, with about 1,200 screens planned for next weekend.
Estimated cume to date is $4.3+ million for the $11.3 million-budget title produced by Elizabeth Banks, Max Handelman and Alison Small. It’s holding a 95% Fresh rating from critics and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes with exit polling continuing strong in week two as it ventured outside the coasts, with organic social buzz and young audiences driving ticket sales.

Emma Seligman’s Bottoms is looking at an estimated weekend gross of $516k on ten screens with a possible leading $51,625 per-theater average for the raunchy, teenage high school girl take on Fight Club.
That’s a win for MGM, its Orion Pictures label and Brownstone Productions, producers on the modestly budgeted ($11.3 million) film written by Seligman and Rachel Sennott. The film skews young and was backed by edgy marketing — ingredients, although never surefire, behind the biggest post-Covid indie film breakouts.
Sunday’s final tally will determine if Bottoms nabs the highest per-screen average post-pandemic on ten or more screens. A24’s Everything Everywhere All At Opened to $50,131 at 10 locations in March of 2022. National Cinema Day, unspooling today, is a wildcard with attendance up but box office dollars limited by $4 tickets and seats available.

It’s an unusual theatrical weekend as the second National Cinema Day rolls out Sunday with $4 tickets for all shows and formats at participating theaters — the bulk of the nation’s circuits big and small. The event was announced Monday with a dedicated clip of new openings, recent returning (The Super Mario Bros. Movie) and re-releases.
Angelika said all its theaters in New York Washington, D.C., California, Virginia and Texas are leaning in, and throwing in $4 sodas of any size. Cinergy Dine-In Cinemas, with nine locations in Texas, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Illinois, will offer small popcorns and sodas for $4. Concession discounts are up each theater owner.

Two true-life sports movies opening on the same weekend! Oh yeah, it was bound to happen but we’re taking a big detour (hmm), maybe even a U-turn from the video game F1 flick. For one thing. this one is set squarely in the past, before Pong was a staple, way back in the splashy 1970s, after a brief stop in the sensational ’60s. Oh, and this concerns the American pastime (as in hot dogs and apple pie), in the tradition of The Natural and The Rookie (with which it shares a star). Now the title doesn’t refer to the pitcher’s mound, but rather to the obstacles its focus must face (perhaps closer to a steep mountain). And since it’s also the last name of the family in this faith-based drama it’s simply The Hill.

Chicago – Catching a young actor in an early career stride is like catching lightning in a bottle. Colin Ford has such a breakthrough role portraying Rickey Hill, a Texas ballplayer who is battling a degenerative disease that may not give him enough time to fulfill his major league dreams. The film is aptly titled “The Hill.”
Rickey Hill wears leg braces as a child due to a degenerative spinal disease, but enjoys playing baseball. His strict pastor father (Dennis Quaid) dissuades his son from the sport, wanting to shield him from further injuries. But despite all odds, the older Rickey (Colin Ford) becomes a baseball “phenom.” When he begins to be scouted for the major leagues, the father and son are still divided, but Rickey Hill won’t give up.

It’s long been said that religion and politics don’t mix. But religion and sports, that’s another story, especially at the movies. The Hill, telling the inspirational true-life story of baseball player Rickey Hill — don’t feel ignorant if you haven’t heard of him; most people seeing the film won’t have either — feels perfectly engineered to appeal to both sports fans and religious folk, especially in those parts of the country so quaintly described as “the heartland.” Basically substituting baseball for dancing, the film plays like an updated version of Footloose, with Dennis Quaid replacing John Lithgow as the disapproving pastor.
When we’re first introduced to Rickey, he’s a young boy growing up impoverished in rural Texas, with braces on his legs because of a degenerative spinal disease. That doesn’t stop him from pursuing his deepest love, namely hitting balls with a bat,...

After two dismal weekends at the box office, any chance of things recovering for the last weekend of August doesn’t seem likely, although one daring movie (and this year’s “National Cinema Day“) will try to make an impact. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
On Sunday, August 27, many North American theaters will be offering $4 movie tickets in hopes of keeping the burst of movie attendance thanks to “Barbenheimer” going into September. It will be hard to tell what sort of effect it has this year, because studio estimates on Sunday might not be able to account for any bump from National Cinema Day.
With that in mind, Sony is releasing the racing movie “Gran Turismo,” which isn’t based on the Sony Playstation driving simulator as much as it tells the true story of Jann Mardenborough, as played by Archie Madekwe (“Midsommar”), a gamer whose...

Briarcliff Entertainment has released the first trailer for The Hill.
Growing up impoverished in small-town Texas, young Rickey Hill shows an extraordinary ability for hitting a baseball, despite being burdened by leg braces from a degenerative spinal disease.
His stern, pastor father (Dennis Quaid) discourages Rickey from playing baseball to protect him from injury, and to have him follow in his footsteps and become a preacher.
As a young man, Rickey (Colin Ford) becomes a baseball phenomenon. His desire to participate in a try-out for a legendary major league scout divides the family and threatens Rickey’s dream of playing professional baseball.
Based on a true story, The Hill is directed by Jeff Celentano and also stars Joelle Carter, country music singer and songwriter Randy Houser, Golden Globe nominee Bonnie Bedelia, and Scott Glenn.
The Hill opens in theaters August 25, 2023.

One that will stand the test of time like Blindside, Rudy, Field of Dreams and The Natural. Dennis was the first and only person I thought of for the lead role upon reading the script,” said Celentano. “There’s no doubt in my mind that he has the ability to play a loving, caring father while at the same time a staunch, powerful man – all the qualities needed to bring Pastor Hill’s character to life.”
“Since the 1970s in particular, the sports film has gained increasing recognition as one of the most important and popular genres in contemporary cinema,” added Quaid. “I couldn’t be more excited about this project. This film will no doubt further validate the power of American social mobility and show that in America you can choose to be what you want.”
Quaid is an Emmy nominee and two-time Golden Globe nominee best known on the film side for turns in Yours, Mine & Ours, In Good Company, The Day After Tomorrow, Cold Creek Manor, Far from Heaven, The Rookie, Wyatt Earp, Postcards from the Edge and other titles.
The actor’s recent TV credits include Netflix’s Merry Happy Whatever, Amazon’s Goliath and Fortitude, and Crackle’s The Art of More.
He’ll next appear in Alex Ranarivelo’s Born a Champion, Julio Quintana’s Blue Miracle, Andrew and Jon Erwin’s American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story, Ray Giarratana’s The Tiger Rising, Sean McNamara’s Reagan, in which he’ll play the actor-turned president, and more.
Quaid is represented by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
The film will tell the true story of Rickey Hill, a kid who overcame his physical disability to play professional baseball. Given the complexities Rickey faced in his relationship with his father, his is a story about more than just athletics. It’s also a story about family, and what one young man can do to follow his dream.
Quaid will portray Rickey’s father, Pastor Hill, an instinctively protective man who doesn’t want his son to go out into the world to pursue his dream, fearing that he’ll get ridiculed for his disability. Ultimately, Hill’s tough exterior is broken as Rickey grows up and proves his natural ability.
Jeff Celentano is directing the film, cast by Rick Montgomery (Green Book), which will go before cameras in Georgia in November.
He’s also producing alongside Warren Ostergard, with Matthew Dwyer, Michael Hollingsworth, Michael Blubaugh and Rickey Hill serving as exec producers.

Cruising the edge of sets like a shark in shallow water, still photographer Ron P. Jaffe has spent a career using his stealthiness to capture the perfect shot. Sharing tales from times past as he sits in the serenity of his Playa del Rey home, he describes taking pictures on many of the crime movies, comedies and dramatic television series made in Hollywood during the past 30 years.
As a “stillman” — industry jargon for his profession — he has photographed everything from actors and on-set action to sets and props, and even provided the pictures for 30-foot-wide promotional billboards.
Jaffe was raised in Montgomery, Ala., after World War II. As a schoolkid, his grades were average, but he enjoyed the high school darkroom and worked on yearbook photography. He qualified for prelaw at Cal State Los Angeles in 1969 but chose to attend UCLA instead. He quit after the first day of lectures,...

Two of my favourite Full Moon flicks, Dollman and Demonic Toys, have been given the Blu-ray treatment by the folks at 88 Films. Already owning the pair on DVD we take a look at these new releases to see how they compare and if the new Blus are worthy of an upgrade…
Dollman
Stars: Tim Thomerson, Jackie Earle Haley, Kamala Lopez, Humberto Ortiz, Nicholas Guest, Judd Omen, Frank Collison | Written by Chris Roghair | Directed by Albert Pyun
Former funnyman, turned TV stalwart, turned action star, Tim Thomerson had already made a name for himself in the Empire Pictures/Full Moon franchise Trancers before spoofing the very same character and his take no crap persona in Dollman for one of my favourite directors, Albert Pyun.
Brick Bardo (Thomerson) is a traveller from outer space who is forced to land on Earth. Though regular sized on his home planet, he is doll-sized here on Earth,...

"If I Only Had Raw Brain" was a really powerful and emotional episode of Being Human.
If you don't mind my saying so, it was raw. Characters were opening up and letting go and accepting and it was beautiful and frightening at the same time. We may be watching a show about monsters, but they are better at being human than most people I know.
The opening scene between Josh and Aidan showed a side to the latter I hadn't seen for a very long time. I can't recall a time when he was so cold. To him, it was no big deal that he turned against the entire species to which his best friend and his fiancee belonged, if only he had named Pete as forbidden fruit, as well. That's not Aidan - or is it? Have I really been so blind to what he really is because he...

This Friday, January 4th, Texas Chainsaw 3D is set to tear apart audiences everywhere courtesy of Lionsgate. The direct sequel to Tobe Hooper's original 1974 classic reunites many franchise vets and newcomers, including the newest chainsaw-wielding maniac of cinema, Dan Yeager.
During a recent press day, Dread Central sat down with Yeager to discuss his approach to Leatherface for Texas Chainsaw 3D and also heard more from the actor about the challenges of bringing a character to life while being stuck behind a mask. Yeager also discussed how this sequel celebrates and pays tribute to Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre more so than any of the other sequels and how he landed the iconic role.
Read on for our exclusive interview with Yeager below, and look for more on Texas Chainsaw 3 all week!
Dread Central: Was there any nervousness on your part to step into the shoes of Leatherface for Texas Chainsaw 3D?...

The Puppet Master series is very dear to my heart. Discovering the films many years ago as a teenager browsing the shelves of my local video store, I have grown up with the franchise, following it through thick and thin, good and bad… I’ve owned every iteration of the films on rental VHS, sell-thru VHS, DVD and now, thanks to the good folks at 88 Films, on Blu-ray.
Following the release of the original Puppet Master back in August, 88 Films are following up with the two immediate sequels, Puppet Master 2, which expanded the roster of puppets with one of my favourites, Torch, and Puppet Master 3: Toulon’s Revenge, which many consider to be the pinnacle of the series and which has since spawned two related sequels of its own in the recent “puppets vs. nazis” flicks Puppet Master: Axis of Evil and Puppet Master X: Axis Rising (which...

Lovers of bad cinema are a masochistic breed. We ask ourselves a fundamental question, why watch a bad movie when we could watch a good one instead? The answer: it’s a giddy thrill seeing so many people work together to create an epic failure. We delight in the hilarious incongruity between ambition and execution in the worst of the worst film has to offer. And sometimes, as we dig through the morass of wretchedness, we unearth a rare gem of a film that has gone full circle and completed the journey from being plain old bad to so-bad-it’s good. This we call Fine Cheese.
Isn’t creating a film that inspires laughs and entertains despite its total failure as art a kind of artistry? The answer is no. But — what the heck, I invite you to kill some time with me and sample a specimen of gourmet fromage: American Ninja 2: The Confrontation.

Leatherface - Dan Yeager How did you land the part? I met Carl Mazzocone a few years ago. We became friends through a mutual love of boats and building stuff. I met John Luessenhop at Carl's Christmas party last year. He thought I was menacingly perfect for the role (so he said). I guess they talked about it and hatched the scheme right there. What was the auditioning process like? Carl knows a guy I studied acting with named Jeff Celentano, a great actor and director. Jeff thought I'd be good in the role, but it wasn't until they saw me on stage as 'Erbert The 'Orrible Ogre that Carl was convinced. I think Carl and John both were a little surprised by the depth I was able to bring to the character. I hope the audience will like it. To prepare for the role of the original...

With winning performances by William Petersen and Michael Wincott as two Atlantic City, N.J., tough guys with an interest in the same woman, "Gunshy" is an engaging ride as long as one doesn't take it too seriously.
Unveiled at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, director Jeff Celentano's second feature is a leisurely gangster drama pitched at mature audiences not requiring continual gunplay, but getting attention in the theatrical marketplace is an iffy prospect. The film's snappy title and the rep of screenwriter Larry Gross ("48 HRS.", "This World, Then the Fireworks") will help.
An investigative journalist on the outs with his editor, Jake (Petersen) catches his wife in bed with another man and knows it's time to get out of town. He slinks off to the Jersey Shore and hits the booze, where fate brings him in contact with likable thug Frankie (Wincott) and his girlfriend Melissa (Diane Lane).
With nothing to lose and seemingly looking for a new profession or an end to his misery, Jake joins Frankie as he makes his rounds and meets the ruthless Irish mobster (Michael Byrne) who calls the shots. Much nicer is Melissa, and both she and Frankie bond with Jake in an unique romantic triangle.
Potentially serious complications ensue when it becomes apparent that Jake is not just along for the adrenalin rush that comes with shaking down restaurant owners and other deadbeats in trouble with the Irishman. He finds the love and attention he needs, but he plays the dangerous game of pursuing Melissa under the nose of the unsuspecting Frankie.
When it comes to light that Jake has a hidden agenda the film almost comes apart, but once again the performances, production values and Celentano's direction keep one intrigued even as credibility takes a backseat.
Lane makes the most of her meaty role as a nice girl, who does not play the guys off each other in the usual tradition of femme fatales but follows her heart. The first-rate supporting cast includes Kevin Gage, Eric Schaeffer and Meat Loaf.
