Spoiler Alert: This story contains details of tonight’s Blue Bloods Season 9 finale.
“It’s a wonderful experience to have a long run at a character where you’re allowed to do a character-driven show, and I think that’s why we’re all so hooked into it,” says Tom Selleck on why he thinks that Blue Bloods is so successful and why there’s a lot more to come for the CBS drama.
With the long awaited wedding of youngest Reagan son Jamie (Will Estes) and his patrol partner, Eddie Janko (Vanessa Ray ) culminating tonight’s Season 9 “Something Blue” finale, one of the most consistently watched shows on television shifted both the dynamic and the focus without missing a beat.
Like every good season finale, tonight’s Blue Bloods ended with a wedding, but it was unsteady walk down the aisle, literally and figuratively at times in the Kevin Wade executive produced show.

America, as we know, is a rabidly divided nation. But when it comes to dramatising the cultural/ideological chasm, the blockbuster era of Hollywood comedy was way ahead of the curve. Town versus gown. The slobs versus the squares. The by-the-book straight-arrow cop versus his reckless, crazy-ass, trash-the-rules partner. Or, just two years ago in Daddy’s Home, Will Ferrell as the agonisingly polite and “evolved” milquetoast stepfather Brad Whitaker versus Mark Wahlberg as the proudly macho and non-coddling divorced delinquent Dusty Mayron, who set out to prove to Brad that “real” dads don’t cry.
The battle played out in predictably pat, occasionally funny ways. And though that should mean, in theory, that there isn’t much ground left for the sequel to cover, Daddy’s Home 2, a boisterously formulaic and designed-by-committee holiday comedy, enjoys a certain leg up in timing. It arrives at a moment when the crackling...

When Hollywood screenwriter Brian Burns wrote Daddy's Home based on his own real-life experiences as a stepdad, he never anticipated comedic legend Will Ferrell playing him in the film. "I'm such a huge Will Ferrell fan," Burns tells People. "One of my first dates with my wife Kelly was to see Elf and I can remember coming out of that movie and my dream was to write a Will Ferrell movie. So to get to do that was already a dream come true. I never planned on writing a Will Ferrell movie where he's playing me, so that was sort of surreal.

Despite going up some pretty stiff competition, Daddy’s Home made an impressive start to its box office tenure when it was released on Christmas Day. Its opening weekend haul of $43.2 million was substantially more than projected, and it only came in second to the box office juggernaut that is Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But does this success mean that a Daddy’s Home 2 is on the way? Well, if it is actually greenlit, co-writer and director Sean Anders admitted that they’d have to go back to the drawing board with their ideas because it certainly wasn’t planned. I had the chance to speak to Daddy’s Home writers Sean Anders, Brian Burns, and John Morris earlier this month, and they revealed that a particular scene at the end of the comedy wasn’t meant to allude to a ...

That’s His Boy: Anders Brings Us Broken Homes for the Holidays with Flaccid Comedy
Chances are, you might not have been expecting much from Sean Anders’ latest directorial effort, Daddy’s Home, a PG-13 reunion of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg following 2010’s decently regarded The Other Guys. Why the film studio chose Christmas weekend to blight theaters with this ungainly misfire of clichéd masculinity seems to be someone’s idea of what constitutes as ‘counterprograming’ to court the film’s main demographic, which would be folks who enjoyed other Anders titles, such as the Adam Sandler flick That’s My Boy (2012) and Horrible Bosses 2 (2014). In fact, one would expect Sandler to pop up here considering the utter weariness of Anders’ screenplay, co-written by John Morris and Brian Burns. Instead, Ferrell and Wahlberg depend on their own worst tendencies in this agonizingly superficial and ultimately offensive film which...

Will Ferrell is one of the most well-regarded comedic actors in the business, but critics seem to agree that his latest project, “Daddy’s Home,” doesn’t even come close to matching his best. The film currently suffers a 22 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with only 12 of the 50 critics counted giving it a positive review. Though some agreed the film had some high points, most took issue with its awkward juxtaposition of raunchy humor and kid-friendly story. TheWrap’s Alonso Duralde agreed, placing the bulk of the blame on director Sean Anders (“That’s My Boy,” “Horrible Bosses 2”) and co-writers Brian Burns.

Just a few years ago, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg surprised audiences with their rapturous chemistry, when they teamed up in the hilarious comedy "The Other Guys." Leaving fans like myself wanting more, it was just a matter of time before we would see them pair up in yet another comedy. That opportunity presented itself, when the script for 'Daddy's Home" came Will's way. The characters in the film had Will and Mark written all over them, which is precisely why Will thought Mark would be perfect for the other "dad" part in the film. It was also apparent at the recent NYC press conference for the film, that the two have a genuine, trusting friendship off-screen, which resonates onscreen and affirms why Mark follow's Will's guidance in being open and taking risks in comedy. Not that he needs much help, as Mark appears to be quite natural and comfortable in a comedy setting.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before – Daddy’s Home features Will Ferrell as a too-nice, overly idealistic stepfather who must compete with Mark Wahlberg’s rugged, motorcycle-riding biological father for his new family’s love. Ferrell is the straight man, Wahlberg shows off his abs a lot, and wacky hi-jinx ensue that cause both men to go a little a lot insane.
You’ve seen both leading men play mirroring characters in previous films, and based on the trailers, you know exactly what to expect when these daddies come home this holiday season. For some, this bland comedic regurgitation will be perfectly fine, but for those who are growing tired of watching a squeaky-clean Will Ferrell get his ass kicked, you’ll see every joke coming from a mile away. Familiarity – it’s hard to avoid these days.

CBS is getting in on crime. Only a day after news broke that CBS is developing a police procedural from Brian Burns, Deadline reports the network is developing another crime drama with female lead.
Titled Smoke & Mirrors, the show follows a "mysterious detective in the Lapd Robbery Homicide Division, a contemporary Houdini-like character who uses her knowledge of deception and misdirection to solve seemingly impossible crimes committed by criminal masterminds."
The pilot comes from Marc Webb, executive producer of CBS' Limitless and The CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and writer Dave Kalstein.

After their onscreen partnership in the Adam McKay comedy The Other Guys, Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell are back together and are battling it out for dad of the year in the first trailer for Daddy’s Home. Sean Anders and John Morris (who wrote Horrible Bosses 2 and Dumb and Dumber To) are the directors, and the film is written by Brian Burns (who worked in the writers’ room of Entourage and Blue Bloods). Mark Wahlberg is the ‘divorced guy’ making things very difficult for Will Ferrell’s character, who just wants to be a good dad to his step-children. While their chemistry worked in The Other Guys, it’ll be interesting to see how they work together as rivals. But from what the trailer gives us,...
