Apple TV+ breakout hit Severance left the waffles behind and celebrated its 14 Emmy nominations on Sunday at Nobu, where the streamer hosted an oceanside For Your Consideration event with some of the cast and crew.
The show, which follows a team of office workers whose memories have been surgically divided between their work and personal lives, has quickly become known for the quirky underground world and reward system it has created, as executive producers Ben Stiller and Dan Erickson point to the “Waffle Party” and “Music Dance Experience” as two aspects that they’ve gotten a particular reaction to from fans.
“I love the reaction when people say like, ‘That’s not what I thought a waffle party would be,'” Stiller told The Hollywood Reporter at the event. “I never had a preconception of what a waffle party actually is — I guess...

“I wrote the very first version of the pilot while I was working at a door factory,” revealed “Severance” creator Dan Erickson at a special Emmys FYC event on Sunday night. “It was the first job I could find when I first moved to L.A. It was off of a Craigslist post. I started to hate my life so intensely that the idea of the show just came out.”
Feelings of discontent or hating anything seemed to be completely severed at the gathering inside Nobu Malibu, cheekily referred to as a “Lumon Corporate Retreat.” Waves crashed onto the sandy beach below as guests including PGA members, industry insiders, entertainers and select media enjoyed caviar, champagne and Japanese cuisine. The darkly sinister, yet whimsical soundtrack composed by Emmy nominee Theodore Shapiro set the tone.

The Apple TV+ series Severance earned a total of 14 Emmy nominations including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Writing For a Drama Series (Dan Erickson), Outstanding Production Design, Outstanding Music Composition (Theodore Shapiro) and Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series (Ben Stiller).
From all the accolades, it’s surprising that the project took years to come to fruition, as did finding the perfect tone for the show which was born after assembling the perfect group of creatives who trusted their instincts along the way.

Many sci-fi series require building a world from scratch, but “Severance” had more than one. The show, created by Dan Erickson and guided to fruition by director Ben Stiller, revolves around office workers who undergo a surgical procedure that allows them to separate their personal and professional lives. During the day, Mark (Adam Scott) and his co-workers undergo a bland, cryptic grind at the mysterious Lumon Industries, while their outside selves endure more familiar routines after hours. This dichotomy demanded precise visual signifiers to situate viewers in the dueling settings.
For production designer Jeremy Hindle, it presented the unique challenge of building out environments even if they didn’t always show every detail.
“The show is taking advantage of the unique way you can design a space,” Hindle told IndieWire. “The camera only has to reveal bits and pieces of it at a time. You don’t need the whole...

“In Mrs. Selvig’s house, you see a little bit of a sampler on the wall when she’s spying on Mark across the way,” reveals Andrew Baseman, the set decorator for “Severance” on AppleTV+. “It says something like ‘We must be cut to heal,’ and that was a little something that Dan Erickson wrote. I said, ‘We need some curisms…that if a nosey neighbor peered into the windows it wouldn’t tip off too much. I did it as a needlepoint sampler. Ben [Stiller] liked it so much that he moved it from the kitchen wall to the dining room wall right next to the window. That’s one of my favorite pieces.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)
Like Best Costume Design, this award rarely corresponds with Best Picture. Before “The Shape of Water” prevailed in both categories in 2018, the last to line-up was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Often, the winner of this race hasn’t even been nominated for the top prize, as was the case with “Memoirs of a Geisha...

While “The Trial of Chicago 7” is earning critical acclaim for writer/director Aaron Sorkin and his all-star cast led by Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne, it is also being singled out for its attention to detail in capturing the look of the late 1960s. And that praise could well translate into recognition from three key branches of the academy: costume designers, hairstylists and makeup artists, and production designers.
The production designer for the film is Shane Valentino, the set decorator is Andrew Baseman, the costumer is Susan Lyall and the hair and makeup teams were headed by Nathan J. Busch II and Louise McCarthy. While none of them have been nominated at the Oscars or their respective guilds, Valentino did receive a BAFTA nomination for Best Production Design in 2016 for “Nocturnal Animals” (lost to “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”) and Busch was Emmy-nominated for Best Hairstyling for a Single-Camera...

The awards shows will continue until morale improves. Next up in the season that never truly ends are the Critics’ Choice Awards, which air on The CW tonight at 7:00 p.m. Est. Fox Searchlight’s “The Favourite,” directed by rising art-house star Yorgos Lanthimos, led the field of film nominees for the 24th annual Critics’ Choice Awards, the Broadcast Film Critics Assn. announced Monday. The period comedy, a biting send-up of the court of Queen Anne, received 14 nominations including best picture, director, actress (Olivia Colman), supporting actress (Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz), best comedy and a host of craft category mentions.
A few paces behind was Disney’s “Black Panther” with 12 nominations and Universal’s “First Man” with 10. Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” Warner Bros.’ “A Star Is Born” and Annapurna’s “Vice” each earned nine nominations. Netflix’s “Roma” scored eight nominations while Universal’s “Green Book” picked up seven.
Those films joined Focus’ “BlacKkKlansman” and Annapurna’s “If Beale Street Could Talk” in the best picture field, historically a prognosticative snapshot of the motion picture Academy’s ultimate lineup.
