No resleeves this time – we must bid adieu to Netflix’s Altered Carbon. Actually, it was time to bid adieu to Altered Carbon months ago. According to reports, the streaming service called time on the pricey sci-fi drama series all the way back in April, but news of the show’s cancellation didn’t reach any of us until now, for reasons best known to Netflix.
Unlike Netflix’s recent choice to drop sophomore seasons of both The Society and I Am Not Ok With This, the decision not to pursue a potential third season of Laeta Kalogridis’ cyberpunk adaptation had nothing to do with pandemic logistics, Deadline confirms. It was just a standard case of ye olde “viewership vs. cost renewal review process” for Altered Carbon, which is arguably less comforting for fans of the series.

Netflix has canceled its science-fiction series “Altered Carbon” after two seasons.
The series featured both Joel Kinnaman and Anthony Mackie as the lead character, Takeshi Kovacs. It was based on Richard K. Morgan’s novel of the same name, which took place in a society where the human mind has been digitized, thus giving people the ability to upload their mind into new bodies (referred to as “sleeves”).
Kinnaman played the character in season and Mackie took over for season two. In Morgan’s book series, Kovacs’ story spans hundreds of years, many different bodies and planets.

“Altered Carbon” has been canceled at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.
The second season of the sci-fi series aired on the streaming service back in February, while the first season aired in 2018. An anime special titled “Resleeved,” which was set before the events of Season 1, was released in 2019.
The series was based on the novel of the same name by Richard K. Morgan. It followed the adventures of interstellar warrior Takeshi Kovacs, who was played by Joel Kinnaman in Season 1 and by Anthony Mackie in Season 2. According to an individual with knowledge of the decision, the decision to cancel the show was made due to Netflix’s traditional approach of cost versus viewership of a series.
Last week, it was announced that Netflix had pulled the plug on both “The Society” and “I’m Not Okay With This” due to budgetary issues surrounding increased health and safety costs related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The German family drama, now in post-production, will star Sinje Irslinger, Til Schweiger and Heike Makatsch in the lead roles. Berlin-based sales outfit Picture Tree International has picked up the international rights to André Erkau’s family drama God You’re Such a Prick. The director’s latest cinematic endeavour was Happy Burnout (2016), a comedy revolving around an unemployed man diagnosed with burn-out syndrome, and starring Torben Liebrecht, Kostja Ullmann and Anke Engelke in the lead roles. The news about Picture Tree International’s acquisition was first reported by Variety. The script of God You’re Such a Prick, penned by Tommy Wosch and Katja Kittendorf, centres on a 16-year-old girl called Stefanie (Sinje Irslinger), whose world is turned upside down when she finds out she has terminal cancer right before a school graduation trip to Paris. When Stefanie’s parents (Til Schweiger and Heike Makatsch) decide that she should stay home instead,...
Takeshi Kovacs can’t smile. That’s just a fact or, better put, a defining facet of “Altered Carbon’s” lead character. After watching the first 10 hours of Netflix’s sci-fi adaptation — about a future where a person’s brain can be digitized into a portable “stack,” and then swapped into a new body to achieve immortality — it was clear the 300-year-old Envoy played (mostly) by Joel Kinnaman can fight well, shoot even better, and have remarkably nimble sex for a three-times-over centenarian.
But following that first season, my own digitized stack can only produce images of an angry Kinnaman, a sad Kinnaman, and, the most popular version, a confused Kinnaman, who’s blank face offers only the faintest hint of curiosity. The actor known for similarly hard-edged action roles in “Robocop” and “Suicide Squad” could dutifully perform Kovacs’ functions, just like his military-trained interstellar warrior, but he cannot smile.

Spoiler Alert: Do not keep reading if you have not yet watched Season 2 of “Altered Carbon,” streaming now on Netflix.
“Altered Carbon” Season 2 sees Anthony Mackie take over the role of Takashi Kovacs, the so-called Last Envoy.
In the new season, Kovacs is on an intergalactic hunt for revolutionary leader Quellcrist Falconer (Renée Elise Goldsberry), his mentor and lover. He eventually finds her on Harlan’s World, Kovacs’ home planet and a principal source of the alloy used to make the stacks that make re-sleeving possible. Season 2 showrunner Alison Schapker tells Variety that it was her and her team’s goal to craft a Kovacs that was significantly different from the Season 1 character, who was played by Joel Kinnaman.
“I feel like the Kovacs in Season 1 was more that noir hero who had seen it all and had no s—s left to give,” she says. “In Season 2, he’s...

This spoiler-free review is based on the first three episodes of Altered Carbon season 2 but contains spoilers for season 1.
Altered Carbon pulled out all the stops in season one, introducing viewers to a cyberpunk world ruled by wealthy nigh-immortals and others who, for a price, can digitally transfer their consciousness into new bodies. But with the audience’s cynical proxy embodied by Joel Kinnaman as Takeshi Kovacs, a soldier from a previous era who is awakened to defend the powerful, viewers might be wondering what will happen now that the characters in season one are either dead or have been forced to take on different “sleeves” with new actors embodying them?

Lela Loren has already lined up her return to the small screen.
The former Power actress will play Danica Harlan in the second season of Altered Carbon.
Netflix has confirmed that her casting was kept under wraps, and the actress has already filmed all of her scenes in Vancouver, British Columbia.
It's not surprising that the news was kept quiet, especially when you consider that Loren exited her series regular role on Power on Sunday.

MGM has released the final trailer for Oscar Isaac's great looking thriller Operation Finale. The story centers on the real-life event of a spy who is brought in to hunt and capture a Nazi war criminal named Adolf Eichmann who was hiding out in Argentina in the 1960s. He was one of Hitler's deadliest lieutenants.
Isaac (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) stars as Peter Malkin, "the Mossad member and head of a group of Israeli spies who took him down. Eichmann (Ben Kingsley) had murdered Malkin’s sister and her children and was the organizer of the transport of Jews to concentration camps in Europe. He escaped to Austria and then to Argentina after WWII."
Like the first trailer, this one does a great job of building the intensity and also offer up new details on how the story is going to play out.

MGM has released the final trailer for Operation Finale; the story of how a Mossad agent captures the Nazi officer, Adolf Eichmann.
The film is based on the team that hunted down and captured Adolf Eichmann, one of the major architects of the Holocaust. Eichmann organised the transport of Jews from countries all over Europe to concentration camps where millions were murdered. After the war, he fled to his home country of Austria and then moved to Argentina. He was finally brought to Israel on his capture to face crimes against humanity and the Jewish people. He was sentenced to hang and was executed in 1962, unrepentant all the way to the grave.
Directed by Chris Weitz, the film stars Oscar Isaac, Ben Kingsley, Lior Raz, Melanie Laurent, Nick Kroll, Joe Alwyn, Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Aronov, Ohad Knoller, Greg Hill, Torben Liebrecht, Mike Hernandez, Greta Scacchi and Pêpê Rapazote.

“We’re all animals,” says Sir Ben Kingsley’s Adolf Eichmann in this intense trailer for Operation Finale. “Some of us just have bigger teeth than others.”
So it goes in director Chris Weitz’s thriller about the Israeli “catch and extract” operation in Argentina to bring to justice the chief architect of Hitler’s Holocaust.
This trailer – the last look at the thriller before MGM releases the film in theaters on Wednesday, August 29 – highlights, among other aspects of the movie, the psychological battle of wills between Kingsley’s Eichmann and Oscar Isaac’s Peter Malkin, one of the Israeli agents tasked with capturing the Nazi.
In exchanges that recall the evil mind games from classics like The Silence of the Lambs and The Exorcist, Eichmann, sounding like evil incarnate, tells Isaac’s agent, “My job was simple: save the country I love from being destroyed. Is your job any different?...

Exclusive: MGM’s Operation Finale, which follows a team of secret agents in their pursuit of Holocaust Nazi architect Adolf Eichmann 15 years after World War II, is moving up from its Sept. 14 opening to August 29, the Wednesday before the four-day Labor Day stretch.
We hear the film tested quite well in the mid 80s in the top two boxes in a Los Angeles-area screening, but tested through the roof in the high 90s elsewhere in the country. Labor Day is a prime time when upscale and older audiences head to the cinema, and with Operation Finale‘s new date, it gives the Chris Weitz-directed movie a jump on the crowded fall awards season competition.
Other notable adult-oriented pics that launched over Labor Day include The Constant Gardener ($33.5M domestic, plus four Oscar noms and a best supporting actress win for Rachel Weisz), George Clooney thriller The American ($35.6M), John Hillcoat...

MGM has released their first trailer for Operation Finale, a post-World War II period thriller staring Ben Kingsley and Oscar Isaac. Kingsley plays Adolf Eichmann who, as described in the trailer as “Hitler’s deadliest lieutenant,” was personally responsible for overseeing the transportation and subsequent murder of millions of innocent Jews during the Holocaust. Taking place after the conclusion of World War II, the film tells the incredible true story of Israel’s intelligence service – the Mossad – and their plan to “catch and extract” the fleeing Eichmann from Argentina. Isaac plays Mossad operative Peter Malkin who’s assigned to execute said operation – and he feels the weight of mission as he’s warned in the trailer: “If you succeed, for the first time in our history, we will judge our executioner. If you fail, he escapes justice, perhaps forever. I beg of you, do not fail.”

Oscar Isaac chases down one of the architects of the Holocaust in MGM’s first trailer for “Operation Finale,” the historical drama about the capture of Adolf Eichmann.
The trailer opens with Eichmann, played by Ben Kingsley, supervising the mass murder of hundreds of concentration camp prisoners, then defending his actions in a voiceover.
“You have no interest in what I have to say,” he says. “Unless it confirms what you think you already know. My job was simple: save the country I love from being destroyed. Is your job any different?”
Chris Weitz directs the drama from Matthew Orton’s screenplay about the capture of Eichmann, who organized the transport of Jews from all over Europe to concentration camps, where an estimated 6 million people were killed. When World War II was ending, Eichmann fled to his home country of Austria and then moved to Argentina. Eichmann was captured in Argentina in 1960 by the Mossad,...

“My job was simple,” says the man heard here in this new trailer for MGM’s Operation Finale. “Save the country I loved from being destroyed.” Self-justifying to the end, that man is Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi logistical mastermind responsible for the deaths of millions of Jews in concentration camps.
Portrayed by Ben Kingsley, Eichmann is seen in flashbacks to World War II and years later in Argentina, where he’s hunted by a team that includes Mossad agent Peter Malkin (Oscar Isaac). Operation Finale traces Malkin’s 1960 attempts to deliver Eichmann to the world’s justice.
“If you fail,” Malkin is told, “he escapes justice, perhaps forever. I beg you do not fail.”
The thriller also stars Lior Raz, Melanie Laurent, Nick Kroll, Joe Alwyn, Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Aronov, Ohad Knoller, Greg Hill, Torben Liebrecht, Mike Hernandez, Greta Scacchi and Pêpê Rapazote.
Chris Weitz directs from Matthew Orton’s script.

Altered Carbon season 2 will return to Netflix with a couple of notable changes to cast and crew, and we've kept tabs on the latest news.
Although Altered Carbon season 2 was never part of the plan for showrunner Laeta Kalogridis or Netflix, the network went ahead and renewed the series anyway: not surprising given its critical success here on Den of Geek and elsewhere. Although the next Richard K. Morgan book in the series might be of too large a scale to be adapted the way the first Takeshi Kovacs novel was, there are plenty of other planets in the settled worlds for the series to explore if that's the direction Kalogridis chooses to go.
