It's a Disaster (2012)
Very Smart
It's difficult to give this movie a thorough review without giving anything away. But I'll say a few words.
The plot revolves around a weekly couples' brunch in a quiet American suburb - as some unknown event destroys the world. Realizing they'll have a few hours left to live - the couples' recollect the past, dream of the future, air their problems, and cope in unique ways.
I find it interesting the reviewers who gave this film a poor rating are the ones complaining it felt unfinished. Clearly they didn't pay attention. This movie is much smarter and more complete than it appears.
There's a few funny moments, very little "ha-ha" moments. This film is dark, cold and calculating. It's interesting and different. Personally, I'd think this film would work better as a theater production - so there's also that.
A New Wave (2006)
Worse than New Wave Music
I found this movie to be okay.
On paper, this movie has everything a person may want! Romance, comedy, drama. A bank robbery, a unique cast, great music and storytelling!
In reality, this movie ended up being mostly garbage, and I'll tell you why.
a) This is my biggest problem: The editing. This movie has by far the worst editing I've ever seen short of local-car-dealership commercials. The editing could've been done better by a deaf Parkinson's patient tapping away at iMovie with a a dead cat. There are scenes where two characters are talking to each other and you can see their lips moving and the audio/video isn't in sync because its clearly dubbed. Why was it dubbed? I don't know! Its English dubbing English! The voices were done in a studio elsewhere in certain scenes! Could they not find a boom-Mic?! They're not expensive; Jesus, even I own one! And i don't make films!
b) Andrew Keegan's performance lacked. It really didn't seem like he wanted to be a part of this project, and his acting was the equivalent of a skit performed by D.A.R.E. for schoolchildren. At least John Krasinksi showed some enthusiasm.
Yes, John Krasinski is the only reason I rented this flick, and its the only real reason worth watching. He's did a good, witty performance and he was the most three-dimensional character. Dean Edwards' character was quite thin, as was whats-her-face.
Final Word? If you're a fan of John Krasinski, this is worth your time. If not, don't even bother. The editing
Fast Track (2006)
A great flick, yet easily forgettable
You know, what I found most surprising about this film is how dark the humour ended up being. I didn't know what to expect when I first saw this, but I'm glad I did.
The performances were all good, and the best scenes involved the quirky, demented characters from Zach Braff's workplace. ESPECIALLY the guy with the hairpiece. His 'marital' counselling scene was effin' hysterical. Its great to see cameos by Paul Rudd and that guy that looks like Montel. After the first batch of laughs a third of way in, its all downhill. The amount of jokes said and seen become exponentially less as time passes.
Rent it. Don't buy it. You'd enjoy it, but soon forget it. If you want to see a better movie with Zach Braff, I'd recommend 'The Last Kiss'.
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Cheesy- yet entertaining
This movie felt like classic Sam Raimi directing, way more than the other 2 Spiderman movies. The movie had god-awful dialog and the acting was poor. Venom looked really cheesy, unless Topher Grace's head was showing. It didn't succeed in pulling 3 stories together (Harry Ozbourne, Venom and Sandman).
What this movie DID have, however, is humor. And plenty of it! There is a lot of really subtle comedy in this piece and its well worth your time to go look at it. It felt a LOT like evil-dead kind of funny, where its situational and the dialog is just cheesy enough for it to feel like a classic B-Cult flick. I guess what I'm trying to say is, you shouldn't look at this film in the perspective of a Hollywood blockbuster. You should look at this flick in the perspective of a classic Sam Raimi film and just loosen up.
That being said, I was very entertained by this movie. It was the first of the Spiderman- movies to actually look and feel like a comic book! It wasn't like watching a film-adaptation of a comic, it WAS the comic.
The action-scenes were really well done. They were cool, for lack of a better word. Especially to see Harry on a hover-board, fighting spider-man.
There was little character development, which is fine for characters like Peter and Mary Jane, because they're well established from the last two films.. but, characters like Eddy Brock suffer from it.
I wish they'd make a reference to Peter's professor the future Lizardman.
I don't think they should make a Fantastic 4 sequel (saw the preview in the theater).
So, in conclusion: Its funny, entertaining, Bruce Cambell is the best part. Its got terrible dialog, little character development, etc. If you're a big fan of Spiderman, you'd most likely get offended. If you're a really laid back moviegoer, it might be worth your time and money. I really enjoyed this film, even though it butchers the spider-man story..
The Fountain (2006)
One of the best films I have ever seen.
The Fountain is easily one of the best movies I have ever seen. After seeing Pi, and Reqiuem for a Dream, I had high hopes for Aranofsky's latest flick. And wow, what a film! To me, it no longer became a movie, and became a work of art I couldn't stop staring at. Also, Mansell's music = brilliant. The movie is easier understood after reading the graphic novel.
But, I cant critique a movie without saying what it could've improved upon.
So, what can it improve upon?
The characters backgrounds seemed a little thin. Hugh Jackman was a little over-dramatic at parts, which at times made it unconvincing. Ending was a tiny bit confusing. There was none of Aranofsky's signature 'Hip-Hop' montages. (Although, not a big problem because he makes up with plenty of stunning eye candy what he lacks in montages). I wish there would have been a little more gore. Some scenes should have been done in slow-motion.
Mm.. thats about it. Truthfully, this movie is perfect. And I can't stress enough how well the visuals go with the music. Very inspirational.
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)
Hands Down Funniest Movie Ever
I watch a lot of movies in my time. And a lot of television. Mostly, because I have no life. This is hands down... funnier than all of them.
The movie plot is simple. Borat comes to America to make a documentary, and in the process searches to marry Pamela Anderson. But Cohen is so funny. Now, I heard many, many people talking about how 'anti-semetical' this movie is- and how offensive it is to the Jewish race.
I'm Jewish myself, and as offensive as it was- the offense meant NOTHING. Why? Because Sasha Cohen (Borat) is Jewish in reality. And well, you're allowed to make fun of yourself. Granted, I'm also Russian, and therefore Borat's character becomes that much more relatable.
There's a naked fight scene, yes. It was funny.
The funniest parts of the movie has to do with Borat as a journalist. Not only does he mess with congressmen, but in the process he exposes them for being racist. How great is that?
Go see the film. If you hate it- it's okay. Only then do you have the right to not like it.
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006)
I'm almost as cool as Ron Burgandy..?
Ricky Bobby is good. Not anchorman-good, but good nonetheless.
The difference between this flick and Anchorman is that this film tries to be more serious. There's a lot of moral conflicts characters bust into, and a lot of philosophical jumble and several scenes were very depressing. This was very entertaining and I really hope Will Farrel will take on another similar role in the future.. Hopefully, the next movie will be funnier.
Don't get me wrong! This movie is chuck-full-of-laughs! Just, not nearly as many as Anchorman.
I'd definitely recommend it - just don't walk into the theatre thinking you'll be seeing a sequel to Anchorman.
The Break-Up (2006)
Very Average
I tell you, I really WANTED to enjoy this movie. I really did. But the whole first half of the film was deemed unenjoyable due to two obnoxious thirteen year olds sitting behind me and my girlfriend. They kept yelling things out the theater during quiet times of the film. At one point, they yelled "Bob Sagat!" during a serious part and killed the experience.
So at first, I told them to be quiet. I said this calmly like a gentleman would.
Time went by, and these two girls kept giggling and being obnoxious. Other people told them to be quiet, but they were farther away. I felt it was my duty to shut these girls up so the rest of the audience can watch in peace.
This time, I said "Shut the **** up, b****!!" That shut them up, although I didn't appear very gentleman-like to my girlfriend.
Time went by, and again these two obnoxious girls were at it again! So annoying, that I just said loudly for everyone to hear, "Wow! Sounds like someone WANTS to get raped." Heh, I didn't hear a peep out of them for the rest of the film. Which just happened to be the second half of it.
Needless to say, it wasn't a bad movie. I just didn't have a good viewing experience. But what can I say about the movie? It wasn't as funny as Wedding Crashers. I didn't laugh as much as when I did for Dodgeball. This just seemed like a very average Vince Vaugh flick.
I'm not saying this movie is bad, but its not great. Somehow, I expected more out of this because of how extremely funny Vince is in other films. It is apparently so, that Vince is the kind of actor who is extremely funny around other extremely funny people. I.E.: Will Farrel or Ben Stiller. He's okay alone. And Jennifer Aniston isn't the funniest 'friend'.
So, I give it a very average 5 of 10.
Le Cinquième Élément (1997)
Best sci flick of all time?
This is my favourite sci-fi action film. Granted, I don't think I can call the "Back to the future" series action films, but regardless its sci-fi. 5th Element, for lack of a better word, just owns. Bruce Willis does an impressive performance. And that red-headed girl (Don't remember her name at this second) is just gorgeous! At times, I found Chris Tucker to be annoying.
Anyways, the movie gives you everything you've ever wanted in a sci-fi flick.
"Sir, are you designated as human?" "No, Sir, I am a meat popsicle" Great lines. =)
Thumbsucker (2005)
Surprisingly good
I was at Blockbuster Video or whatever when I walked past this film. It had an array of colours on the DVD box so it kind of caught my eye. I noticed that it won all these awards and nominations, so I figured "What the hell" and rented it. I had no idea what to expect. I told myself not to look at the back of the DVD box, I wanted a surprise. And what a good surprise it was! This film has a great plot line with very well developed characters. Cobb is a character we can all relate to. Whether we are him, or knew a similar kid back in high school. That makes the movie experience personal.
This is the perfect indy-flick, in my opinion. It's worth watching.
King Kong (2005)
Peter Jackson, WHAT DID YOU DO!?
This movie is the biggest disappointment since the "Blair Witch Project" You get these amazing special effects, and beautiful lighting and this almost 300 Million Dollar Project...and still, I'd rather go see the original old school King Kong.
I'd have to give some props to Jack Black. He actually did a good job playing a serious role. Which was surprising. The other guy, who I can never remember his name, but he played the main character in "The Pianist" (Great Film), did a really good job too. And the guy who played the cook was fairly entertaining. The girl is terrible. Everyone else is terrible. The acting is awful.
The plot is not quite the original plot from King Kong. It was fairly true, but some scenes were horrid. In fact, Peter Jackson with a 300M budget could've made scenes better. But he didn't.
Tell me, something. A woman is hanging around in a night-gown in the middle of WINTER on the top of a skyscraper. Has anyone ever been to the top of a tall building like the Chrystler Building? I've been the top of several. Let me tell you, its windy as Hell. How could she hold onto any sort of railing?! She would've gotten frostbite and blown off the building. Not to mention, its winter. Why is she in a nightgown?
Kong didn't even raid her NYC apartment with his giant hand. That's a shame.
Now, I know what many people are thinking. "Giant Ape, that's fine. Dinosaurs trampling humans? That's fine too! But the nightgown in winter? THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE RANTING ABOUT?"
Yeah, I understands its a little dumb. But that's something that caught my eye and really annoyed me. This is a fantasy-plot line, but they should at least keep some sort of realism when it comes to physics and weather.
Also, the movie is too long for such a short plot. It hurt to stand up after the film. It also hurt to know I just wasted $9.75 and 3 hours of my life.
I'd suggest seeing something else. This is a big disappointment. Save your money. Or wait for the DVD and rent it for a dollar.
Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo (2005)
Much better than the original. Eddy is a riot
I must say, that most of the people who reviewed this movie are idiots. They don't understand one thing about the film: Its not meant to be an Oscar winning, golden globe nominated, academy award lover.
The movie seems to be a movie made by a bunch of guys getting together and having a good time. The plot is awful. The acting is terrible. The film is an insult to cinema. But thats why I loved it so much!
I've made movies with my friends similar to this. I can relate in so many ways.
The humor factor is great. It appears to me that you have to be a Dave-Chappelle style-of-humor fan to really enjoy this one. Or an Adam Sandler fan.
I can understand why most people hate it. Seriously tho, take that stick out of your... you know. See it with some friends. And see it high, perhaps. The movie is filled with twisted humor and jokes that are offensive. If you're a laid back high-school student, or a college ..guy- you'd love it with a passion
Much better than the original. 9 out of 10
Wolf Creek (2005)
This is a great film for some
I'm going to just break it down for the readers...
Pro: Really nice art-house style filming. Lots of fun little details. Sick, realistic torture scenes. Some of the best acting I've seen in cinema to date. Keeps you interested, at least the second half of the film. Believable killer.
Con: People with ADD will HATE it, because its really slow to start. Thin storyline. Slightly abrupt ending.
Conclusion: This film seems to be an "I love it" or "I hate it" film. There's little gray area. I, for one, loved this film. I believe artsy-cinema people will enjoy this film, while typical horror-movie, I'm-just-here-to-get-a-scare people will hate it.
For most people, Id suggest waiting for Hostel. For demented art-house lovers, see it.
