The Menu (2022)
The Menu (2022)
The Menu is a 2022 film by Mark Mylod.
On a remote island, an enigmatic chef (Ralph Fiennes) invites guests to an opulent meal. Among the guests is a young woman (Anya Taylor-Joy), who has arrived with her boyfriend (Nicholas Hoult) and quickly realizes that there is more behind the facade of the extravagant restaurant than meets the eye...
Mark Mylod, who previously worked mainly in series, wants to scare us with "The Menu" - and he succeeds. In a classy restaurant, more or less select guests dine on exquisite dishes. Isolated on an island, culinary arts are celebrated, almost ritualistically and solemnly. What the guests do not suspect at first, however, becomes clear over the course of the menu: They are not meant to survive this evening. The menu follows a deadly dramaturgy. The maître, who has won every gastronomic award, played coolly and sinisterly by Ralph Fiennes, takes his guests to task, who also represent the art audience as such. "The Menu" is not another "eat the rich" film, but rather the film is an expression of a radical conception of art.
May December (2023)
May December (2023)
May December is a 2023 film by Todd Haynes.
After their relationship dominated the gossip tabloids two decades ago, Gracie (Julianne Moore) and Joe (Charles Melton) now lead a seemingly perfect life with a house and garden. But their domestic idyll is thrown into disarray when famous television actress Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) comes to their small community to research her upcoming role as Gracie. The more Elizabeth creeps into Gracie and Joe's everyday lives, the more the uncomfortable realities of her scandal resurface and cause long-suppressed emotions to resurface.
Todd Haynes is a master of sophisticated melodrama who radically questions our perception and understanding of truth. In "May December", Natalie Portman plays the actress Elizabeth, who is faced with a special challenge: she is to play a woman who, in her mid-thirties, had a relationship with a 13-year-old boy, became pregnant by him, went to prison and later married him and started a family with him. The couple still lives in the same place, and now Elizabeth visits them so that she can study her role and understand this strange woman (Julianne Moore) and this unusual relationship. But who is actually playing whom here? Who is manipulating whom? "May December" is both a film and a film review, and Todd Haynes provides his theory of acting.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Oppenheimer(2023)
Oppenheimer is a film by Christopher Nolan from 2023.
With "Oppenheimer", Christopher Nolan presents a biopic that sets standards. This film vibrates for 181 minutes to show the multifaceted character J. Robert Oppenheimer from several perspectives. Nolan jumps wildly back and forth in time, an impressive star ensemble fits into the aesthetic, which consists primarily of close-ups. Nolan focuses on two topics in particular: 1. What responsibility do scientists have? 2. What relationship does the state have with its citizens - and vice versa? The father of the atom bomb appears in this film in all his conflict, but is not a cinematic monument, not a psychological drama, nor do we experience a celebration of the cult of genius, rather this film throws us back into the present again and again. At the same time, "Oppenheimer" is a highly intelligent reflection on the medium of film and the gaze of the camera.
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Killers of the Flower Moon 2023
Killers of the Flower Moon is a 2023 film by Martin Scorsese.
The USA in the 1920s: A lot of oil was found in the territory of the Osage Nation in the state of Oklahoma, which is why the indigenous peoples of North America living there have become very wealthy. But the white settlers are also after the black gold, especially the influential rancher William Hale (Robert De Niro) and his nephew Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), who is married to the Osage Mollie (Lily Gladstone). There are suddenly more and more deaths among the members of the Osage tribe, which seem to be somehow connected to the coveted oil drilling rights. This triggers a large-scale investigation by a completely new police unit - the FBI. Tom White (Jesse Plemons), a former Texas Ranger and old-school law enforcement officer, leads the investigation for the new federal agency and stumbles into a hornet's nest of corruption and murder...
Martin Scorsese gives us the devastating psychological profile not only of a few killers, but of an entire society that, with the greatest self-confidence and without any sense of guilt, believes it is simply taking back what is naturally and God-given to it anyway. Instead of guessing in typical true crime fashion who the perpetrators really are, "Killers Of The Flower Moon" turns out to be an indictment of the - probably not only historical - circumstances, driven by the honest fury of its creator. Scorsese not only tells the story of exploited indigenous people, but also a lot about the fictional exploitation that can be transferred to our society today.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
Dune: Part Two 2024
Dune Part Two is a film by Denis Villeneuve from 2024.
DUNE: PART TWO" tells the story of the mythical journey of Paul Atreides, who, with the help of Chani and the Fremen, embarks on a campaign of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Young Paul is faced with the choice between the love of his life and the fate of the entire universe. But he must try by all means to prevent a terrible future - a future that no one but him can foresee.
Denis Villeneuve returns with extremely impressive images: "Dune: Part Two" is a monumental film that largely rejects the usual blockbuster spectacle and instead reflects almost contemplatively on power and domination. This long-awaited film is therefore a multi-layered commentary on our (geopolitical) present, in which the voices of reason are hardly heard anymore. Villeneuve leads us to a dead end, or rather: we suddenly slide into an abyss - and it is no longer so easy to determine how this could have happened.

Dune 2021
Dune is a 2021 film by Denis Villeneuve. Dune (2021)
A noble family becomes embroiled in a war for control of the galaxy's most valuable asset, while their legacy is plagued by visions of a dark future.
Frank Herbert's book was long considered unfilmable, and the history of those who have made futile attempts is long. But now Villeneuve proves that the literary source material can be structured and modified for the screen into a very unique work of art. The fabulous actors help in this: Timothée #Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan #Skarsgard, Zendaya and many other stars manage to draw nuanced characters and not disappear in the inhospitable but extremely imposing environment, but develop an impressive presence. The main focus is on a topic that is transferable to our world: raw material extraction with simultaneous dependence,
The Beekeeper (2024)
The Beekeeper 2024
The Beekeeper is a film by David Ayer from 2024.
In THE BEEKEEPER, a man's merciless campaign of revenge becomes a national affair after it turns out that he is a former employee of a powerful and secret organization called the "Beekeepers".
Ruthless action cinema of the classic kind with Jason Statham, who finds his old strength again here. With this film, David Ayer presents a straightforward action film that, with elements of conspiracy and political thriller, represents an atypical mixture for the genre. But he stages his villains in such a way that exactly the right buttons have to be pushed in the viewer to elicit certain reactions.
Bones and All (2022)
Bones and All 2022
Bones and all is a 2022 film by Luca Guadagnino
The genre hybrid, which includes horror, western, road movie and coming-of-age elements, tells one of the most unusual romances in the entire history of film: Maren (Taylor Russell) and Lee (Timothée Chalamet) are Eaters, which means that they eat people. After her father leaves her and she now wanders the world alone, Maren finds out that there are more Eaters than she thought. There will be scary encounters over the course of her trip through the States, but a very close relationship with Lee, who is also wandering through the country, is also developing. In "Bones And All", two lost souls meet, whom Guadagnino places in melancholic expanses. But what does the Eater metaphor stand for? Drug addiction? Recognition? No one knows.
Poor Things (2023)
Poor Things 2023
Poor Things is a 2023 film directed by Giorgos Lanthimos
The Greek director Giorgos Lanthimos succeeds where Greta Gerwig could not: "Poor Things" is an intelligent, beautiful feminist film that does not stop at a critique of the patriarchy, but derives a universal message from it. We see Emma Stone in her most difficult role to date, which she masters brilliantly: Bella Baxter is the creation of Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), an extraordinary child-woman, because although her body is that of an adult woman, her brain is that of an infant. Bella will emancipate herself from this intricate situation and find her own way of accessing the world.
Civil War (2024)
Civil War 2024
Civil War is a film by Alex Garland from 2024.
A team of journalists tries to get from New York to the capital during a civil war to conduct an interview with the president.
After "Men", "Ex machina" and "Devs", Alex Garland takes a completely different path: "Civil War" is a war film and a road movie - but the story is not set in a country that is already ravaged by civil war, but the action takes place in the USA in the near future. Many critics are disappointed with "Civil War" because they were hoping for an analysis of the American present, but Alex Garland is concerned with fundamental things: he philosophizes about the nature of war photography and praises it highly.

Exciting drama with a routine story, in which a convincing acting Jean Claude van Damme gives his character profile. "The Bouncer" is always very close to its protagonist, which is mainly thanks to the excellent camera work and gives insights into the various milieus.

S. Craig Zahler once again questions the fragile meaning of ancient models of masculinity.
The film is convincing with its great actors and recognizable soundtrack, which ends in a brutal finale, but the way there stands in its way with some superfluous dialogue scenes.

Brawl in Cell Block 99. (2017)
Brute prison film in Grindhouse style with a surprising, convincing acting Vince Vaughn who has never been seen in such a role. The story is well told where you never know what will happen next, even if with a few seemingly unnecessary scenes that don't add any value to the plot. Still a great film that just savored and enjoyed its scenes of violence in the last third.

Bone Tomahawk. (2015)
Classic western with elements of the cannibal horror genre, with which S. Graig Zahler makes his film debut. Atmospherically densely staged, the film scores above all with its detailed character narrative
and a relentless finale, but slows itself down with some unnecessary dialogue sequences.

Predictable genre film that addresses critical issues but does not elaborate on them. Instead, the film tries to artificially build up tension with cut action while the actors try to give their clichéd roles a bit of a profile.
