Stop HATING great art
20 April 2024
Yes - I've read some of the hate-mail toward this 1996 release, and conclude ... SHAME on y'all.

A film should be judged by its content and overall production - NOT the subject matter.

Elizabeth Berkley who broke ground as Jessie Spano in the hit teen sitcom 'Saved By the Bell', stars here as Nomi Malone; a former drug addict/prostitute from the east (wild guessing, based on her evasive background) following the alleged death of her parents. To battle uphill grinds in hitching rides toward L. A then Vegas, to pursue her dream as a top dancing showgirl (think Christina in 'Burlesque'). Getting burned by jerks, along the way. Which truly speaks of the exploitive treatment many women faced with misogyny. Treated as low life sex workers while fighting for their place legitimately as an artist/dancer. Something Berkley pulls off believably with deep intensity as a woman tired of the bull**** Similar to 'Striptease' in taken seriously as a woman and professional.

Gina Gershon deliciously plays Cristal Connors, a tuitive aged exotic dancer, still burning the moves in her 30--something tired loins, as star of the Stardust marquee "GODDESS'. That features class-A Broadway type dancers, in stylish erotic nudity. Shining her celeb status as much as her ego and talent can deliver gracefully. Kyle McLaughlin is somewhat believable in his role as Zach Carey, the proprietor of the Stardust Hotel, pursuing Nomi as his up-in-coming star understudy to Cristal, whom will at some point "retire" from the spot, as age catches up with her flexibility.

The rest of the supporting cast and dancers are reasonably well. Portraying the back scenes of strip joints. Some critiqued as 'too much tit and a**'. But what did they expect? Leave it to Beaver? It's called SHOWGIRLS for a reason. And is well produced for it's time.

Elizabeth Berkley deserves praise for her honest efforts in creating Nomi as she was meant to be portrayed. In a role that challenged her horizons as an actress and dancer.

Very entertaining teen sex comedy - with Johnny Depp
6 April 2024
First time I saw this gem was on HBO late-night as a young Teen. The title itself alluring with Leslie Easterbrook in the credits, whom I came to love as the busty funny Sgt. Callahan in the 'Police Academy' franchise. And Victor Elizondo - Another screen gem who went on to major hits as the head of security in 'The Princess Diaries' and 'Pretty Woman' fan favorite.

One of those crazy but 'clean' teen romp cineflex's you stay up late at night to watch - loving every minute of the fun T & A entertainment.

Seeing Johnny Depp in his pre-90210, Scissorhands, and Crybaby stardom is interesting. Holding his own here as Jack opposite Rob Morrow's Ben; the virginal hottie of the two girl-crazed nuttiness in this fun-packed sex romp. Backed by an interesting supporting cast of Tony Azito (The Pirates of Penzance) Dody Goodman (Grease) and Andrew (Dice) Clay before he made it big in the comedy circuit.

This film works because it brings teenage horndog rampage along with good vibes and times.

Terrific Dangerfield Comedy
17 March 2024
I'm pretty sure the low rater naysayers were drunk when they downvoted this film, because it's HILARIOUS.

Dangerfield, at one of his finest BEST performances, as Chesterfield. The hapless sales executive, desperately seeking promotion to VIP, by getting socked into coaching a girls soccer team, sponsored by his company. Co-starring the unfathomable Jackee', whom I really didn't care for in "227" with her whiney 'mareweeeee'. But really shines here in her sassy finest as asst. Coach Julie, leading a girls team to the championships.

Some have found the 'cross dressing' of a boy serving on the girls team, to bring them to the championship as "offensive". But give us a break. It's comedy and in good taste. Since classics like Mel Brooks did nothing differently in some of his comedy greats like 'History of the World' and 'Blazing Saddles'. People just need to lighten up and get a life.

This was great clean comedy at its finest, considering Dangerfield didn't always deliver stellar at his live performances. A much better funny film actor.

Nice spin-off from 70s Show
3 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
What an absolute joy to see some old faces resurrected in this newer version, with Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp, back as now grandparents Red and Kitty Forman. Living in the same family Bungalow as That '70s Show. With plenty of guest appearances from the old cast including Laura Prepon and Topher Grace, who are now parents to teen daughter Leia, who remarkably carries many traits of both her parents.

Making moments even more enjoyable, as she weighs and balances between her small group of eclectic friends who all bear remarkable personality and otherwise resemblances to the old cast of teens including the absent Steven Hyde (Danny Masterson)

Sure it doesn't have quite the same 'kick' as that of That' 70s Show cast. But it doesn't have to be a copycat, as the new kids are equally cute,, cunning, and funny. Bringing more modern-ish adventures to the plate. With Red still up to his old 'foot in your ass' threats, while Kitty man's her kitchen with parental authority like before. The two of them still equally in love all these years.

Memorable 80s Teen Romp
21 March 2023
I swear the 1-star raters were on acid as this movie is a GEM.

First rented on VHS back in the day, assuming it another teen sex comedy, because of the opening 'newlywed' sequence at the famed 'Paradise Motel'. But the fun had only started.

It's a totally engaging, though somewhat campy teen romp with the usual high school gang, parties, virgins, peer pressure, hunks, cuties, etc. As Sam's folks buy the famed Paradise Motel off the strip, as a new living investment. Sam making new friends after the kids "discover" the family business with hotshot Mick (Krantz), the high school jock and ladies-man, taking advantage by 'renting' rooms for his sweet-teen romps. Long as Sam's father doesn't find out.

Enter Laura, Mick's on/off again love-quest who takes mature interest in Sam, with issues of her own. Trying to ease out Mick and his other girlfriends while befriending Sam, who finally confronts Mick on his otherwise 'promiscuous' quests. 'Winning' squeaky clean Laura at the end. As they head out for a burger. Totally clean risque fun that is worth the watch.

Lame as lame does
15 March 2023
There was high hope when this series premiered on FOX-17. Starring Jamie Walter's in the lead as Alex, the shows promising hearthrob.

Well the bus stopped there as a total lame production, with songs that would've been laughed off American Idol after a second verse.

Co-starring Cheryl Pollack as his appending sax-playing love interest, just didn't work. Total bomb chemistry, next to bare acting. Including the supporting cast.

Lord knows how its signature, 'How do you talk to an angel' stayed on the billboard charts. As cringeworthy flat and uninspiring as it was. No surprise the show never caught on with fans.

Very fun and entertaining
20 February 2023
Okay IMDB... where are these so-called low 3 star reviews... Because I'M not seeing them.

This movie is hysterical if you're a comedy fan. Dolly and The Stallion play off each other brilliantly, as the glamorous country performer and the roughneck taxi driver. Which typically would be a headshaker, if ever was. But both are first-rate actors with great screen chemistry.

The songs are catchy, the script decent. You can't not toe-tap at the end when 'Nick' performs his groundbreaking rockabilly 'solo', joined in time by Parton as his "teacher". Farnsworth is legend as her kindly father. And each moment of trying to "morph" NYC Nick into a country star, is laugh-a-minute priceless.

Buy the soundtrack.

Jaw-dropping disappointing...
15 February 2023
I highly anticipated this, considering I'd missed it growing up (more like wasn't 'allowed' to watch it as a child, because it was an all-black cast) Well... I didn't miss out on much. Talk about atrocious.

The critics' input about Ross's performance with dead-on. Portraying an alleged "grown up" Dorothy, clearly past her prime in the horrible afro wig, for any youthful school teacher. Plastic acting, alongside the dance moves. Even Cecily Tyson could have pulled off Dorothy better. Ross didn't do it for me, nor the movie.

The rest of the cast, including Michael Jackson, proved fitting in their roles. Considering this was a Motown version of the original film and score. The singing and dance moves acceptable, for most the older players including. Russell and Pryor. But I did not dig. Mabel King's Wicked Witch companying Dorothy, in any of their moments, considering the songs and lyrics just didn't flow. And don't get me started on The Wizard, as I barely got through them reaching Oz.

Just an awful script, with mediocre songs and dancing. A wrong director hired for the project. And terrible miscasting with Ross as DOROTHY. In a landmark that should have proved farer than Godspell (another dated train wreck)

Haven't laughed this hard in ages
8 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't get what the sad reviews are about.

If you're expecting another raw raunchy gore-fest, so typical of Zombie films. Then you're bound for disappointment.

This is COMEDY.

Watching the previews on Hulu and Pluto TV streaming, we knew it was a winner.

How delightful to see something so opposite from Zombie's typical gore work. Best known for his string of gruesome features (House of the 1000 Corpses, Devil's Rejects, Lords of Salem etc.)

His first attempt in producing great comedy. We haven't laughed this hard in ages. Hello Mel Brooks meets the Wayans Bros.

Basically kicking off with in Transylvania's 'underground' rock arena ... 'entertainer' Hermann meeting - and falling for - the lovely Lily... How The Munster's got started. Essentially leaving the homeland for life in the States. And hopefully 'blend in' with American culture.

The tail end, paying homage to the classic '60s TV sitcom.

The stellar cast includes his wife Sherry Moon Zombie as Lily Munster in a role she's perfectly suited. Hermann, who's cornball humor at times fall flat. Paying perfect homage to the original TV Hermann, who at times annoyed the snot out of father-in-law Grandpaw. The remaining cast also don't disappoint.

A few faces I was vaguely familiar. But no-less wonderfully skilled actors in their respective roles, including Igor. And great cameo appearances from such legends as Elvira herself, Cassandra Knapp.

Excellent lighting, special effects, costuming, and script that flows as it's supposed to. Zombie has truly impressed with this turn of genre. Can't wait to see what his next comedy will be.

Way Overrated for its Time
15 November 2022
The first time I watched this as a kid growing up in the 1980s with HBO, I didn't get it. Malcolm McDowell (Time After Time) starring as this weird dude, with weird friends who run all over England or what, creating havoc. Like an opposing Monty Python team.

Rewatching today as an adult, I found myself bored, fast forwarding some areas, because it's so poorly written and directed. Though I' respected Kubrick's work in 'The Shining" and 'Eyes Wide Shut' But this one's a mess. Whatever happened with the script. The hooligans are all over the place, making no sense except for the shenanigans they appear to "get away with" outside of the clearly dumb title. McDowells character chained whatnot to a chair, forced to watch some appalling footage with toothpicks or what forcing his eyes open. Gruesome to some. But eye rolling for me. Did not improve the film either way.

Absolutely Love It
5 November 2022
So sorry the haters down on this show. It's awesome.

Most revamps and remakes don't work. But this one does.

So Rosanne isn't part of it anymore. Who cares. She wasn't funny. But bored us to tears with her crass sarcasm. Goodman and Metcalf were way funnier. And still deliver the magic, along with Gilbert and Gorensen. And the supporting cast are equally great. Love that they integrated LGBT issues including the workplace.

Good writing... and bringing Katey Sagal on-board as Dan's new wife Louise. Along with Jay Ferguson as Dar's love interest. Just brings new magic to the show.

A big giant yes.

Fairly decent forgotten flick
22 September 2022
Okay it's not Revenge of the Nerds, Clint Eastwood's biker gang, or The Goonies. But it does have redeeming moments. Less than a screwball comedy. More like dry. But at least the lead players are good.

Everyone loved 'The Bull' (Tony Rosato). Who kind of reminds you of Bobcat Goldwaite with his notorious mumbling of lines. But in a far less comical manner. Bean is the Esai Morales, second-in-command tough guy 'interpreting' for The Bull. And Patti D'Arbanville shines here, as Bull's woman. Who soon grows bored with his childish antics, and falls for the nice guy. Played of course, by a very young film (and TV) veteran Michael Biehn, of 'The Magnificent Seven', 'Terminator', 'Tombstone' and other box office hits. Booted from military school, back to his hometown. Which has gone overrun by biker gang misfits. Falling for their head girl (D'Arbanville).

The script falls short in some places. But is otherwise, a decent movie night entertainment.

Delightful romantic comedy
4 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know what others here were low rating about this movie not being funny. Guess they weren't from the time.

This indeed is a lost classic I remember watching on HBO back in the late 80s, when John Malkovich was a sort-of up-in-coming film star, who'd later portray (and get nominated for) Lennie in 'Of Mice and Men'

It starts out on a Quigley note, with Frankie Stone (Magnuson) as a self-supporting public relations proprietor, called to "represent" a human-like Android "Ulysses" created by robotics scientist, Jeff Peters (also Malkovich) to mimic humanlike emotions etc. So that it can 'schmooze' with Frankie, and essentially win over Congress - to earn funding for their lab expansion, and sending him out into deep space.

Unfortunately, 'Ulysses' finds himself falling for Frankie. And all comical hell breaks loose after he breaks out of the lab, and then follows her home. Erupting a mayhem of entertaining mishaps at the mall, in public, and Frankie's home with her best friend, Trish (Headley) An neurotic oversexed married/divorcee "recovering" from her on-again/off-again tumulus marriage to a "cheating"' hunky soap star.

The entire movie from start to finish is fun and entertaining. There are no 'laugh-out-loud' moments, because there's not supposed to be. It's a romantic-comedy. And anyone who knows anything about romantic comedies knows that there are lots of cute moments alongside chuckles, and maybe a few outer laughs in-between telling the story. Which this movie absolutely does. And quite well.

One of the greater highlights is the wedding of Frankie's kid sister, toward the end of the movie, which 'reveals Ulysses' real identity, following a swimming pool mishap.

Magnuson replicates a very young Shirley MacLaine, as the sassy but professional P. R. monger boss-lady, while Malkovich doesn't overshadow her with this ever candor performance as both Dr. Peters and Ulysses. And Headley and (Polly) Bergen are both superb in their supporting roles as Frankie's best friend Trish, and doting mother, Estelle.

Terrible episode ... Epic fail
27 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is by far the worst episode in the entire series. We forced ourselves to watch it just to see what happened with the aliens.

Poor Direction: The action splits badly between present day 'alien impregnation' of four college kids, and the 1950s Route 66 phenomena.

Poor Casting: Mike Vogel nowhere even remotely resembles the late President John F. Kennedy (They seriously couldn't find a more look-alike actor?)

Poor Writing: Most of the Presidential roundtable discussions are terribly formatted and lame (with the exception of the floating demon alien)

AHS has always delivered quality - which is why it remains a leading horror franchise. We can (somewhat) forgive for THIS poor execution.

Funny at start - but then failed
21 August 2022
I'm all about reality type TV comedy (The Office etc) If it's FUNNY At least this series started out that way. But then halfway through first season it just flatlined. The humor was no longer humor - but an obnoxious, unfunny female principal overshadowing much of the action, to the point of boor-fest.

I found myself fast-fwd through all the bore, to the actual humor content between the staff and an occasional student interaction. Shaking my head as to why the writing suddenly changed.

Grease 2 (1982)

Not bad... for a 1982 sequel
13 July 2022
Ironic how some film addicts gave this a bad rating, as they obviously don't appreciate great musical comedy.

I totally didn't get why friends who saw it at the cinema said it sucked. Just because Travolta and Olivia weren't in it... No, they'd graduated at the end of Grease... like the others.

Well I'd rented it on VHS and enjoyed it very much. This time around, we have Sandy's younger cousin Michael falling for Pink Lady Stephanie. Who's almost over her dead 'romance' with T-Bird leader Johnny. Who incidentally falls for 2nd Pink Lady, Paulette. Stephanie's equally hot, sassy co-leader.

The songs are cute and catchy, like "Reproduction", "Cool Rider", and everyone's favorite, "Girl for All Seasons " And a few teachers get in on the act, with Mr Stuart singing a few parts in "Reproduction" which didn't happen in the first one.

I got a kick out of Johnny comically misquoting the menstruation quip as 'mental-stration'. And the cute way he and Paulette totally dig each other, with the hot flirting thing. They had more chemistry than he and Stephanie together.

The pairing of Louis and Sharon was cute and sexy. Him dawning that adorable combat helmet in "Do it for Our Country " Alongside other fun and playful moments.

As others stated, it's a sequel. And some sequels don't necessarily follow an original. Characters can change. Directors change, etc. What should matter here, is the score and the cast. Which were entertaining and fun. Hence, a musical comedy.

John Travolta didn't repeat his Danny Zuko... we get Adrian Zmed, whom I had a big crush on in 'T. J. Hooker' An equally built, hunky, cool, lady-swinging, and brassy leader of the T-Birds...AND a decent singing voice. With Pfeiffer rolling it as Stephanie...the new Pink Lady 'Rizzo'. Who's sharp, sassy, and fit.... as a Pink Lady leader should be.

The rest of the T-Birds and Pink Ladies suit their roles well And most of them hold a decent note.

It's a Yes with me.

The Siege at Ruby Ridge (1996 TV Movie)
8/10
Another Government Screw-up that Blamed the Victim
9 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The movie itself is a must-see. The content, questionable.

When this first released as a TV movie in 1995, it failed to make sense to me why the feds were picking on, and then killing a rural family.... until I watched it later as an adult.

Here's Randy Weaver (Quaid) and his wife (Dern) with their young, growing family. Moving out to countryland USA Idaho, to build a private life for themselves... away from government and politics. Like any rural, live-off-the-land folk.

They have their religious beliefs (that most others wouldn't care for, nor support) the same as any great American family. Beliefs that are protected under the Constitution of our land, and the Bill of Rights. That is, until Randy becomes friends, and barely surface involved with a local militia-elect and white-power community. Despite that there's no actual depiction of any real violence occurring.

Yes, Vickie Weaver becomes a whacked out idealistic fundamentalist, with Randy and young family in-tow. Turning their kids into weapon-wielding soldiers at home-guard. But that's neither here or there. They bared right to practice their faith, in their own community, or in comfort of their home. Without political pushback or threats. They didn't deserve how the government moved in, and then turned on them - as though they were common anti-law violent fugitives. Everything just went sideways, and then turned into a full-blown war, they didn't see coming. Yes, Randy was guilty, like his neighbors, of harboring extreme weapons that would cause potential harm. But this government crack-down depiction went well over the top.

No, government agents aren't perfect. Far from it. Despite their extensive military training. So, how they reacted to this event was beyond criminal. Attempting to cover up a malicious act, that wasn't happening, in the direct shooting a 14-yr old boy, and the family dog, as potential threats, when they were just out tracking a deer. Then, the idiot command blowing everything out of proportion in accusation of the Weavers plotting gun violence, when they weren't - later attempting a 'cut deal' with a holed up Randy, in surrender.

I just sat, shaking my head, as the whole scene unfolded. Crying with the family, as Vickie got killed by a careless sniper. The courtroom drama itself, almost unfolded in lotacracy. With the officials attempting feign of blame, when they knew they were guilty of committing a heinous wrongful act of ill-constitution against an innocent family, who were rightly bearing arms, to hunt game on their own land. More bottom line of how clumsy and careless the government can be, against certain citizens and their alienable rights.

Not a Great TV Version
22 June 2022
I'm all too familiar with the classic Carol Burnett 1964, playing Winifred. And the 1994 Broadway version with Sarah Jessica Parker. What I think we weren't 'prepared' for, is this 2005 televised rendition with Tommy Smothers. It absolutely didn't stack up to either of its predecessors. Ullmann performed decently....in a role strictly designed for a 20-something ingenue... they seriously couldn't find a more age-appropriate actress? And Burnett held her own as the aging, acidic Queen Aggravaine. But Morrison and Deschanel were horribly misused in their full talents, as Harry and Larkin. As their iconic 'in a little while' duet was so lamely executed, I wanted to fire the choreographer/ or the director.

The rest of the performance was clearly mixed reviews considering the mediocre choreography, and direction. Which one could only attribute to a very second-rate middle school show. Absolutely little Disney magic or prestige.

The Magic Lost
19 April 2022
Hey - I loved The Brady's as much as anyone during my youth (mostly reruns, as I was an 80s kid).

And the show was very entertaining. Watching the kids grow up into teenagers. Then head off to college (or wherever). But this TV movie seems so forced, unfortunately. Starting out lame with Mike and Carol churning away on exercise bikes, talking about the upcoming holidays. What to buy for each other etc. When Alice pays a surprise visit. And thereon... it's nothing but humdrum boorish script of few laughs, and unmemorable moment. Lame attitudes with each of the adult children over family stuff. Like each actor was offered extra incentive for yet "another BRADY thing". Not at all the "magic" that kept audiences captivated during the original TV series run.

Welcome Back, Kotter (1975–1979)
5/10
Reality 70s in its Somewhat Finest
22 March 2022
I was a baby when this show debuted. So I only recalled bits and pieces of the so-called 'sweat hogs' gang; as they were unaffectinately termed. Travolta's, Vinnie Barbarino, leading the pack of yesterday punk delinquents.

Watching it today, it totally reflects the dawning 70s, in its heyday. Created by its frontrunner---former stand-up, Gabe Kaplan, as the hapless Kotter. A good-hearted teacher trying to pay it forward, from his own teenage 'Sweat hog' days. With his attractive, ever-faithful, supportive wife Julie, in tow. Trouble is ... most of the gang are way too old to be realistic teenage punks. Being Travolta and Horshack were almost 21, and looked it. While Epstein was nearly 22. And some of the humor falls horribly flat in places, when its intended to be LOL funny. Like the 'rubberhose' jokes, that honestly, went stank, after a while. And other moments created as 'one ins' between Kotter and the hogs, that sadly just hit the wall dead. A memorable show, that indeed launched super stardom careers for Travolta and Strassman. Who went on to Saturday Night Fever, M*A*S*H, and Honey I Shrunk the Kids fame.

Too poorly produced to be "scary"
24 February 2022
The only real 'ghost story' here is the poor direction. Nothing even remotely scary about this utter trainwreck. Just say "lame".

Director Rosenburg obviously didn't know a thing about directing or producing a horror film, because the atmosphere is plain lame. There are no dramatic eerie moments. No real setup. No gut-grabbing suspense. Just a sad run-on script of cliche' dialogue depositing very little action.

There are supposedly "things" present that are creeping the family, but nothing that materializes, and no perpetual suspense that should leave your skin crawling like a great ghost story. Just fake theater blood pouring from the manufactured holes in the wall, horribly edited effects, and a painted red room with a tar pit. ... or was that Texas T that George fell into? It's a tough call.

No common sense from Kathy at the end, waiting an eternity for George to return to the van, in a torrential storm, instead hopping in the driver's seat, and turning the van around to find him.

The special effects just overall don't work. Like forced efforts to fill a 2-hr length horror film that doesn't work. Including an entire screenplay that is plain junk. Fakery at its best, despite the decent efforts of Brolin, Kidder, and the Rod Steiger.

Absolute Slush

Bill Cosby was always a gifted comedian who made audiences laugh with his stories of fatherhood. But a movie star, he isn't. This film released around the same time as the blockbuster 'Ghost' (Patrick Swayze) and was immediately labeled a rip-off, due it's similar title. But that's where it ended. Very bad acting, poor direction, weak script, and no humor. Total box office tank that lasted maybe a week.

Not one of Zombies Best
22 November 2021
The first time I watched this on years back on streaming, I grew bored and irritated after just 20 minutes, with Sheri Moon who couldn't act to save her soul. But later decided to give it a second go.

Texas Chainsaw it is not. Nor anywhere near the fright factor or cutting intensity of those murderous psychopaths. But don't get me wrong. Moseley, Haig, Forsythe, and Easterbrook, kill it in their roles. I've always liked and respected most of their film work. Moseley can rock just about any gruesome role you throw his way.

The script and production themselves, left some consideration. With a typical small town killing/murder spree in rural Texas. Deadly violent shootouts, and plenty of draining F-bombs with somewhat empty dialogue between the core characters.
