Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992)
very mean and undeserved reviews
It's crazy how people go mad picky on old classics and try to humiliate an iconic legacy, then flood similar recent movies with positive reviews just cause they're hip and on netflix. I swear if netflix made this same movie today and used modern cgi fx the rating would be no less than 7/10.
I really enjoyed the recent Hellraiser remake as I enjoy most recent horror movies from the 2020s. The thing is, what makes them enjoyable is that they draw many things from these older movies, which get fricking blasted with negative reviews.
I do understand how Hellraiser 2 and 3 are disappointing compared to the first movie, I see how the disappointment could turn fans into haters BUT!!! Hellraiser 1 is a once in a lifetime experience, it was an absolute masterpiece. I find it arrogant to pretend the franchise should keep the same level of the original, it'd be great, but also a miracle! (only the godfather and a few others managed, and they're the exception!!)
M3GAN (2022)
Not bad for a 1h42m tiktok
This movie is literally the latest Chucky combined with Annabelle, minus the horror parts. The sort of "sci-fi" approach is very lazy and uninspired, makes you wonder if ChatGPT wrote this movie. The only honest thing about this movie is that it has been promoted with such a basic and underwhelming strategy I knew exactly what to expect, still I can't really grasp how this is a James Wan movie -especially after Malignant, which wasn't perfect but a very tasteful effort nevertheless.
Maybe, since this is a kids' movie, they could have sold the idea to Disney Pixar. I'm sure that style would have been much more consistent with the plot.
12 Kilometers (2016)
Would make a nice TV series
1. The concept of "sound of the earth" is really cool and interesting, a tv series could definitely be based off this. It's a shame, but also an opportunity, that the viewer is left wanting more of it. It's a bit like the old myth of the sirens/mermaids luring sailors to their death with their singing. In 12KM's case this idea is brought to the next level, not only this sound can influence people's will-power, but it can mutate their cells genetically and it also has a physical manifestation: a black liquid/goo.
2. Which leads me to point 2. I have been extremely frustrated by the 2 recent Venom movies. They could have benefitted so much from a similar cosmic horror perspective! As some fans might remember, venom symbiotes react to sound as well. Unlike the black goo from 12KM they are afraid of certain frequencies; but if that is the case, wouldn't it be possible that there could be a sound that might empower them? 12KM would make such a thrilling origin story tv series for Venom. Not only it would sell a lot, but it would become a psychological and cosmic horror classic!
I'm sorry Mike if this review sounds in any way superficial, but I did really enjoy your work and I'm sure it can e developed in so many creative and amazing ways.
X (2022)
too mildto be edgy/trash and too cringe to be captivating
Old lady from the Shining is sexually frustrated and angry at random people? It sounds like a dreadful plot -and it is. Casting for a couple characters is good and the premise had potential, but the movie generally feels lazy and is underwhelming. I also felt uncomfortable with the cringe portrayal of women as sex-hungry irrational beings, not cause I'm left-leaning or something it just seems very forced (so to fit the exploitation theme and compensate for the lack of effort in actually producing a decent exploitation flick).
There are a few fun scenes though, so maybe have a watch.
Sleepers (1996)
great actors
First half of the movie: frick this is gonna be a classic
second half of the movie: never mind it's boooooringgg.
Btw, the famous actors do really good, but the less famous ones.... ouch :/
Terrifier (2016)
Somewhere between 5 and 8
As everyone else wrote, David Howard Thornton gives a chilling performance, almost anticipating Joaquin Phoenix's Joker. I think Art is a solid character and it might easily become a contemporary classic. The thing is, it's hard to present such a good concept because it needs a very good presentation too! ...And the movie is not that good in many ways. Most characters are poorly characterized. Setting the whole movie in a dark garage makes it boring. Sound effects are not very on point and events seem to occur randomly, with a very weak narrative.
With that said, I give the first half of the movie a solid 8.5 and I strongly recommend watching Terrifier because the one big pro finally outweighs the cons.
The Forever Purge (2021)
Very good first half, then it gets progressively more generic
I'm a big fan of the series, rated all of them 7 -which is worth an 8 compared to this one. The concept is hard to criticize because it introduces a new twist to the saga, that maybe a part of the audience needed. It is properly introduced and contextualized in the first half of the movie, which is very enjoyable and entertaining.
When it gets slightly past it, the movie loses personality and that "purge flavor" dissolves and it becomes a generic action/guerrilla one. Unlike the other movies from the series, the climax towards the end is chaotic and not engaging. Even the villains' looks and attitudes are progressively less edgy.
I get it that maybe it's a choice they made, to get the picture closer to reality and further from the franchise aesthetic. The probably thought it'd make it more haunting, since it reflects actual racial tensions and a still unresolved issue of violence and discrimination. I think the political strenght of the franchise, though, lies exactly in the edgy mannerisms, situations, charachter design and dialogues (that were more present in the first half). To make a Purge movie realistic to the extent of making it generic may weaken its message, instead of reinforcing it.
Old (2021)
You really get the feel of time passing by...
And regret getting older by the minute as this boring and predictable movie goes on with barely nothing happening -except for some small and underwhelming dramatic frictions between poorly developed characters.
I would recommend Blumhouse's Fantasy Island, very similar plot, not a top-notch movie as well, but at least they do something to keep you looking at the screen.
Lord of War (2005)
Man I was expecting more
Nicolas Cage is over skilled for the role. The movie's a sort of 2005 Wolf of Wall Street. It's an expression of a certain style of moviemaking that was popular at the time. What was quirky back then now looks clunky and all we are left with is an amazing Cage delivering very little of his full potential.
The Broken (2008)
Zulawski, anyone?
To all the intellectuals praising this movie as if it was fine wine, I recommend watching Possession (1981). Not only it is an obvious influence to this movie that most reviewers didn't get, but it digs way deeper and in a more sophisticated way into the eeriness of creepy doppelgangers undermining our own identities and close relationships.
This movie isn't bad bad, I'll give you that, but come on it's either the product of little effort or lack of natural talent.
Red State (2011)
frick let me just say
The police killed more hostages than the cult wtf.
Wolf Creek (2005)
not gore, not "torture porn", just intense
I read the reviews about this movie before watching it and they scared me and made me more anxious than the film did! These guys and critics probably haven't seen many European or British horror movies - and come one Saw is more gore than this, even 80s slashers are.
This movie is very scary and shocking because of the raw interactions between characters and the fact that it brings an alternative, fresher and somehow more realistic perspective on the genre. Sound quality and soundtrack are also on point. It's one of the best recent horror movies that is actually unfunnily, unpolitically and unapologetically scary.
Dave (2020)
Delete season 2
Season 1 was stunning, it was close to perfect. I watched the first 2 episodes of season 2 as soon as they were out and they weren't much but quite ok - if that was the standard for the rest of the season it would have been tolerable.
Now I'm at episode 8, drained of all enthusiasm and soo mad for the bad quality of the show. I think I hate myself for hoping it might eventually still get better by the last episode. Cause it's clear it won't.
The Voices (2014)
The concept deserves 8 stars, the making maybe 6
Definitely watch it, very original and smart take on the horror genre. I don't think it's much of a dark comedy, and having hilarious predicaments is part of the genius writing and the depth of the movie.
Carrie (2013)
One can't simply "remake" Carrie
I'm ashamed I watched the whole thing.
DePalma's work is iconic. "Carrie" was a contemporary pre-raphaelite painting in motion. This other movie is a soulless teen horror. The production is good but whoever did the casting for this remake probably ruined the movie on purpose: the characters are dull to a ridiculous extent and the chemistry between them is artificial in a cringy way. This movie lacks all that made Carrie a cult movie.
Thank God they have been able to put Julianne Moore in it, which is the only reason it might make sense to withstand this act of vandalism.
One last note: whoever picks which movie "deserves" the remake treatment, should aim lower. Maybe pick something that wasn't too great in the first place and make it better- like they did with The Town That Dreaded Sundown (probably the best horror remake ever?)
...E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà (1981)
Don't believe the haters
"The truth, as the light, makes blind." Albert Camus
This movie is a conceived as a great visual experience, it raises multiple questions on the relationship between seeing what you do not understand, or accept, and then not being able to see it anymore once you understand it. I strongly suggest watching it since it's one of those movies composed by cult scenes only, the aesthetics are so forward looking I still can't believe it's from 1981. Most of the time it looks like it's from the 90s.
Of course, don't expect big 2020 CGI level of special fx, but still there were scenes that made me make faces!
Devs (2020)
Worth watching but weird acting and sleepy parts
Compared to many other tv shows it's great, but the weird acting can be annoying every now and then. Also, the music parts in slow motion made me sleepy and the parts that are supposed to be fun/laughable don't really work that much.
Nonetheless I recommend it, since the rest (mystery, sci-fi, action elements) is quite enjoyable.
Panic Room (2002)
great movie (now a classic) that could have ended differently
Why does the guy throw all the movey away!!!! it doesnt make sense
The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
watch it!!!
I honestly don't get the negative reviews, a perfect movie for its genre! It's also nicely acted and edited, I can't think about anything to complain about really.
Astral (2018)
watch insidious
I was expecting a smart, watered down version of insidious with an astral projection focus but damn this is next level of watered down. Nothing exciting or interesting about the plot, I wonder why I kept watching. I won't spoil anything but it only gets worse (= more boring) so pause it from the beginning if you're not feeling it.
A Dark Song (2016)
Watch it
It's very pleasant to watch and digest, raises questions on spirituality and explore the human dimensions of pain and weakness. I wouldn't say it's a proper "horror" movie, more like a movie on ceremonial magic and how it seems to relate to certain emotional needs.
Possessor (2020)
Very smart and very violent Sci-Fi
A portrait of the present: Big corporations and companies tear families apart and turn humans into beasts. Stunning visual essay, perhaps too violent - but in this case it serves the purpose.
Vacancy (2007)
Actually pretty great
I'm not rating it more than 7 cause I feel like it's a movie with very simple premises and it doesn't aim to either state-of-the-art aesthetics nor a life changing underlying message. For it's own purposes this is definitely a 9!
Caché (2005)
Not my cup of tea...
The movie is great and everything, but it is soaked in social commentary. At the end of the movie I felt questioned, intrigued and intellectually stimulated - as much as I felt drained, like when you finish watching a documentary. It's definitely a fine piece of cinematography, but totally the opposite of what anyone reading the plot would expect! Do not watch it if you're looking for a mystery/thriller/horror/action movie
Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010)
More like this please!
Unique and not for everyone, still an objectively beautiful and well crafted work. There should be more of this genre! Totally recommend Mandy by the same director - which was a 10/10 for me.
