Mysterio is set to make his big-screen debut next week, but he might have appeared earlier. Here's the story behind Raimi's ditched sequel
Spider-Man: Far From Home is swinging into theaters on July 2, finally introducing classic nemesis – or is he? – Mysterio (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) to the big screen. But if everything had gone to plan with Sam Raimi's fourth Spider-Man movie, the character might not have had to wait this long for his cinematic debut.
Sam Raimi’s Tobey Maguire-starring Spider-Man series wasn’t always intended to finish where it did. Despite not-particularly-glowing reviews, Spider-Man 3 made a massive $890 million at the global box office – a very strong total for a solo superhero film, even by modern standards – and talk quickly turned to a sequel. Spider-Man 4 seemed a very likely prospect at the time, and many of us were hoping that Raimi could...

Earlier this week, Marvel Comics caused a bit of a tizzy when they posted a singular image of the number “4” created by spider webbing. This had many fans thinking that Marvel was going to turn the abandoned idea for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 movie into a comic book. But the next day, they posted […]

Fans were insanely excited earlier this week when rumors and speculation abound that Marvel Comics was set to release a comic book adaptation of Sam Raimi’s unproduced “Spider-Man 4” film. However, that was quickly debunked the next day, when the ‘4’ tweet was replaced with a ‘3’ signaling that the image was the beginning of a countdown and less of a clue. And now that the countdown is over, we know what the actual story is and it involves a filmmaker.

If you’re a Spider-Man fan, then there’s a very good chance you’ve been taken on an emotional rollercoaster ride in the past few days. Long story short, Marvel posted the number “4” formed out of webs on their Twitter page over the weekend, thereby forcing True Believers to think that a comic book based on Sam Raimi’s canned Spider-Man 4 movie was in the works. Well, either that or a possible Future Foundation reunion.
To the chagrin of many, it wasn’t long before those hopes were dashed when a “3,” a “2” and a “1” followed on subsequent days, thus revealing we were enduring a countdown of some sort. Though the speculation was fun while it lasted, someone needs to tell the House of Ideas that nobody starts a countdown at “4.”

If you’re a True Believer with access to the internet, then there’s a good chance you got caught up in the Spider-Man 4 hoopla that went down in the past few days.
To briefly reiterate, fans went into a frenzy over the weekend when Marvel posted the numeral “4” on their Twitter account – only it was formed out of webs. This, of course, caused countless folks to ponder the possibility of the House of Ideas publishing a comic book based on Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 movie that never was. It also didn’t help matters when legendary artist Alex Ross shared a piece of his own related to the beloved film trilogy.
Well, it looks like we can probably put those hopes to bed – and likely any of those related to a Future Foundation reunion – because that “4” we spoke of was merely the beginning of a countdown. Since then,...

Update: Marvel denies rumor (see below). The original article follows…
With “Spider-Man: Far From Home” just weeks away from hitting theaters, it’s hard to imagine what it was like before Marvel Studios and Sony teamed up to bring fans what is becoming the definitive ‘Spider-Man’ series. However, back in 2002, filmmaker Sam Raimi and his star Tobey Maguire not only were the first to bring Spider-Man to the big screen, but also helped launch the current era of superhero films.

Marvel Entertainment sent comic book fans into a tizzy June 16 after posting a cryptic image depicting a spider web in the shape of the number four. The image created a stir on social media as Marvel fans took the graphic to be a tease that Sam Raimi’s once-in-development “Spider-Man 4” might finally see the light of day as a comic book. Marvel Entertainment has not confirmed anything about the image, further stoking rumors online.
While 20th Century Fox released “X-Men” in 2000, it’s usually Sam Raimi and Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man” in 2002 that’s given credit for kicking off the comic book movie boom of the 21st century. The film, starring Tobey Maguire as the web-slinging superhero and Kirsten Dunst as love interest Mary Jane Watson, broke the opening weekend box office record at the time with $114 million. “Spider-Man” ended its run with $821 million worldwide, and Raimi and his cast...

If you’re an avid reader of comic books, then there’s a good chance you’ve read a media tie-in at some point – and no, I’m not talking about adaptations for existing movies. In recent years, we’ve seen TV shows like Smallville, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The X-Files continue their sagas in the medium we love.
On a similar note, we’ve seen the surface scratched when it comes to films that never were. Though Frank Miller was credited as a writer on RoboCop 2, his original screenplay didn’t exactly find itself adapted. Luckily, it was produced as a comic down the line. Conversely, Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash brought us a crossover sequel of epic proportions.
The reason I’m bringing this up is because Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 has once again become a topic for discussion. In case you hadn’t heard,...

As cool as it was to see Spider-Man in his black suit, battling Venom both physically and mentally, we have Spider-Man 3 to thank for Sam Raimi’s fourth outing never seeing the light of day. Tobey Maguire’s Spidey was supposed to go up against Mysterio and Lizard, but Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland’s web-slingers have faced or will face off against them instead.
Here’s some good news for those fans who were curious to see what Spider-Man 4 would’ve looked like though: you might not have to wait much longer.
Marvel artist Alex Ross posted a teaser on his Twitter page recently. Seen below, it shows a very familiar duo from the first Spider-Man trilogy and came with the caption: #SaturdayThoughts #saturdaymorning #Saturday #spiderman movie art @salcomicbookpro.

The canceled video game adaptation of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 has been leaked by an artist.
An environmental artist named Wayne Dalton recently shared a handful of screenshots from Spider-Man 4: the video game adaptation of the canceled Sam Raimi film sequel of the same name.
The game in question was supposedly being developed by Radical Entertainment (developers of The Simpsons: Hit & Run and the Prototype series). Dalton says that there's no footage of the game (at least none that he has access to) but that the plan was for the game to feature an advanced navigation system bolstered by improved web physics. It's also visually impressive in general (at least based on the screenshots that Dalton shared).
What happened to the game is actually a two-part story. The first part deals with the film that the game was supposed to be based on. Sam...

Before Marvel struck a deal with Sony to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and before they brought us two lacklustre Amazing Spider-Man films, there was Sam Raimi’s trilogy.
The first two outings were some of the finest superhero movies of all time, faithfully recreating the excitement and wonder of the hero’s adventures on the page. And then we got Spider-Man 3. Yeah, remember Tobey Maguire’s emo Peter Parker? Needless to say, Sony chose not to produce a fourth film from Raimi and co. as they were afraid of another repeat and we instead got the aforementioned Amazing Spider-Man series.
Still, Spider-Man 4 made it pretty far into development. Raimi and Maguire were all ready to go and John Malkovich was set to play the fan-favorite villain the Vulture. Details weren’t plentiful, but in comparison to its predecessor, the project looked pretty promising. And while we...

Sony’s Spider-Man franchise was in a rocky state for about, oh, 10 years there, but they finally hit something universally adored again with last December’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the Oscar-winning animated movie that introduced audiences to the various Spider-people of the multiverse. Understandably, the plan is for this to spawn a franchise, with each spinoff film starring one of these alt-Spideys.
But could one of them be a cartoon take on Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man? That’s what we’re now thinking could happen as producer Avi Arad revealed to Deadline that he’d like to work with Sam Raimi again to see what kind of Spider-Verse movie he’d come up with.
“I would love to see what kind of animated Spider-Man movie we’d get from Sam Raimi so if he sees this, ‘Call me Sam!'”
Raimi helmed the original Spider-Man trilogy from 2002-2007, two...

Before superhero movies completely took over Hollywood, Sam Raimi helped usher it in and prime audiences for what was to come with his Spider-Man films. He ended up making two incredibly fantastic Spider-Man films and a third one that a lot of people didn’t care for. While I enjoyed Spider-Man 3 more than most people, the movie certainly does have some big issues.
Raimi was supposed to make a fourth film and was deep into the development of it when Sony Pictures cancelled the project and opted to reboot the franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man. After that Marvel Studios got involved and have given fans an awesome Spider-Man franchise that fans love.
As a fan of Raimi’s original Spider-Man films, I would have loved see him get to make his fourth film. Well, now there’s an effort by a fan of Raimi’s films to try and make that happen.

Jake Gyllenhaal's supervillain (or is he?) is revealed in the new trailer for the Spidey sequel. Here's everything you need to know
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
So, the latest Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer gives us a much closer look at Jake Gyllenhall’s Mysterio. And while he seems to be playing a friend to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker (“He’s like Iron Man and Thor rolled into one!” his classmates enthuse), we’re not quite sold – Mysterio’s comic-book background suggests he’ll wind up being much more of a foe.
Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio, is one of Spider-Man’s oldest and most iconic arch-enemies. He’s a Hollywood stuntman and FX technician who becomes disillusioned with the industry, and so decides to put his skills to good use as a supervillain instead. The latest trailer instead reveals Mysterio as someone from a parallel Earth,...
