Robin Williams improvised so much dialogue while shooting Mrs. Doubtfire that the movie used up 2 million feet of film, according to its director Chris Columbus.
“Early on in the process, [Williams] went to me, ‘Hey boss, the way I like to work, if you’re up for it, is I’ll give you three or four scripted takes, and then let’s play,’” Columbus said in a new interview with Business Insider commemorating the film’s 30th anniversary. “By saying that, what he meant was he wanted to improvise. And that’s exactly how we shot every scene. We would have exactly what was scripted, and then Robin would go off and it was something to behold.”
Williams ad-libbed so much on the set of the 1993 comedy — in which he plays a newly-divorced actor digsuising himself as an elderly female housekeeper — that there were “several occasions” where he used up all...

With the success of long-format cult-exposé documentaries such as Hulu’s “Stolen Youth,” HBO’s “The Vow” and Netflix’s “Wild Wild Country,” it’s not surprising that both Amazon and Netflix greenlit competing docuseries about Twin Flames Universe – an alleged online love cult run by YouTube influencers Jeff and Shaleia Divine.
Amazon’s “Desperately Seeking Soulmate: Escaping Twin Flames Universe” is being released on Oct. 6, a month before Netflix’s “Escaping Twin Flames.”
“Desperately Seeking Soulmate” is based on journalist Alice Hines’ 2020 Vanity Fair article about the “always online, all-consuming world of Twin Flames Universe.” The article and subsequent docuseries, which Hines leads, takes a deep dive into the alleged online love cult, which is still active. Created by Jeff and Shaleia, Twin Flames Universe sells online classes that guarantee to match each member with their “soulmate.” The three-part Amazon docuseries examines how Jeff and Shaleia met and formed...

When The Tonight Show host Johnny Carson attempted to talk to late actor Robin Williams about becoming a father for the first time in 1983, he had to cut through the comedian’s signature antics to get to the sweet truth of his answer.
Williams’ hilarious takes on life with an infant are too good to be missed. But Carson also got him to put the “silliness” aside to answer honestly how he felt about being a father.

Having written movies, produced a few, directed three; managed movie stars and built brands, and published high-end cultural magazines, he decided “smack in the middle of Covid, in my late fifties,” that he wanted to go back to making movies.
He has set up a small film company that he calls Standalone. Finch has a relationship with Columbia Pictures and he’ll formally announce a development deal with that studio next month. The entrepreneur also has a project with Netflix.
Finch told us that he has a slate of some 15 to 20 projects. Included in his group of filmmaking collaborators are directors Josie Rourke (Mary Queen of Scots), Tom Hooper (Les Miserables), Marina Zenovich (Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind), Simon Curtis (Downton Abbey: A New Era), and Florian Zeller (The Father...

Thanks to a viral tweet that resurfaced last week, director Chris Columbus has confirmed that there is indeed an R-rated version of “Mrs. Doubtfire” in existence. Referencing a 2015 interview with Columbus, fans have been calling for the release of a supposed Nc-17 version of the family comedy starring Robin Williams, who had a taste for raunchy improv. Originally, “Mrs. Doubtfire” was rated PG-13 theatrically.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Chris Columbus said there is no Nc-17 version, but did add that multiple cuts of the movie exist. “The reality is that there was a deal between Robin and myself, which was, he’ll do one or two, three scripted takes. And then he would say, ‘Then let me play.’ And we would basically go on anywhere between 15 to 22 takes, I think 22 being the most I remember,” Columbus said. “He would sometimes go into territory that wouldn’t be appropriate for a PG-13 movie,...

On Friday, director Chris Columbus revealed that an R-rated version of the beloved 1993 comedy “Mrs. Doubtfire” exists – though there is not a Nc-17 cut of the film.
The confirmation first came from Entertainment Weekly following a viral tweet that noted Robin Williams, who played the eponymous Euphegenia Doubtfire, improvised so much that there were PG, PG-13, R and Nc-17 cuts of the film. The official film is rated PG-13.

In “Robin’s Wish,” a documentary about the last days of Robin Williams, the comedian’s widow, Susan Schneider Williams, recalls one of the first times that she could tell something was seriously off. Robin called her from Vancouver, where he was shooting the third “Night at the Museum” film, and he couldn’t calm himself down. He was having a panic attack over the fact that he couldn’t remember his lines; at times, he was having trouble remembering even one line of dialogue. That wasn’t a problem he’d ever had before, and given that he was one of the most mentally nimble people ever created, you can see how disturbing this might have been. Shawn Levy, the “Night at the Museum” director, recalls Robin telling him, “I don’t know what’s going on. I’m not me anymore.” His mind, says Levy, “was not firing at the same speed.

When his brain was firing on all comedic cylinders—on stage performing standup or improvising in front of the camera—Robin Williams described an experience akin to being possessed. “When it works, it’s great—and when it doesn’t, it’s painful,” he said, solemnly reflecting on his ireplicable comedic genius. Those observations, taken from an old television interview, make up the prologue to Robin’s Wish, a lean, intimate and slightly incomplete documentary about Williams’ final years and months. They foreshadow the devastating cranial spiral at the heart of the comedian’s tragic ending.
Undoubtedly, Williams’ death by suicide on Aug. 11, 2014, came as a global surprise. Rampant media reports erroneously suggested substance abuse or depression as leading causes, all-encompassing issues perhaps attributed to his recently diagnosed case of Parkinson’s disease. But once examiners conducted a full autopsy, they found Williams had suffered from a degenerative neurological disorder called Lewy body dementia,...

As of this date, the annual Tour de France is still scheduled to take place.

ESPN will continue its Sunday night programming to fill the void left by the absence of live sports by airing three films in its documentary series “30 for 30” after the conclusion of the Chicago Bulls docu-series “The Last Dance,” including stories on Lance Armstrong, Bruce Lee and the steroid scandal that surrounded Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire.
The films “Lance,” “Be Water” and “Long Gone Summer” will air on ESPN on Sunday nights after “The Last Dance” ends and will be available on ESPN+ immediately after their premieres. Both “Lance” and “Be Water” made their premieres at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
First up is “Lance” on Sunday, May 24, a two-part film directed by Marina Zenovich (“Robin Williams: Come Inside my Mind) that grants new access to the disgraced cycling champion, and the second part of the film will air the following Sunday on May 31.

Park City is with her — or will be, when an under-wraps documentary series about Hillary Clinton debuts at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
“Hillary,” directed by Nanette Burstein, is one of several projects going up in Sundance’s special events program, announced Tuesday by the festival in step with its short film and indie episodic lineups.
The four-part series, produced by Hulu, is described as “a portrait of a public woman, interweaving moments from never-before-seen 2016 campaign footage with biographical chapters of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s life.” The project will feature interviews with Clinton herself, husband Bill Clinton, close friends and journalists, and represent “an examination of how she became simultaneously one of the most admired and vilified women in the world.” It premieres March 6 on Hulu.

For Marina Zenovich, one of the biggest highlights of making “Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind” was getting to see some lost “Mork and Mindy” outtakes: “That stuff is gold! It’s what you dream of when you’re a documentary filmmaker.” Zenovich tells us in our recent webchat (watch the video above) that they didn’t know about the footage until they started interviewing Robin Williams‘ old co-star, Pam Dawber. “She said, ‘You know, I have a blooper reel in my garage and I don’t live too far from here,’ and we were like, ‘Oh my God! We’ll come with you right now!'” Zenovich adds that in sifting through archive footage is “like a bunch of found objects and you rub them together and see what works.”

Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: Prior to the Netflix disruption, this category was a three-horse race from 2003 – 2016. During those 13 years, only HBO, History, and PBS earned victories in the category, and aside from one win each from Discovery and CBS, these were the only networks to win in the history of Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special category.
Fun Fact: One of the Big Four broadcast networks hasn’t been nominated in this category since 2011 — just two years before the TV Academy renamed Outstanding Nonfiction Series as Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special. Prior to the shift toward including feature-length documentaries, ABC, CBS, NBC, and/or Fox had been in the running nine of the 11 years prior.
Notable Ineligible Series: Docuseries have their own category, so don’t expect the likes of “America to Me” or “Our Planet” here.

Last night saw an under the radar precursor give out its prizes, which in turn may have shifted one of the Oscar categories. Yes, Friday evening saw the American Cinema Editors give out their annual Ace Eddie awards. This yearly event usually can clue us in to what the frontrunners for Best Film Editing at the Academy Awards are. That may well be the case again here, though if that’s true, the Academy and its voters are going to be making an usual choice. They already did in terms of their nominees in the category though, so I suppose this is just par for the course… In a bit of a surprise, the award for Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) went to John Ottman for his work on Bohemian Rhapsody. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which has been on a roll since the Golden Globes, was the surprise dramatic editing winner for John Ottman at the 69th Ace Eddie Awards Friday at the Beverly Hilton.
“The Favourite” (Yorgos Mavropsaridis), “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (Robert Fisher Jr.), and “Free Solo” (Bob Eisenhardt) took home comedy, animation, and documentary feature honors.
Ace is usually a great Oscar bellwether for editing (24 out of the last 28 years ), so Ottman now becomes the favorite for his deft balancing of the Freddie Mercury story (Best Actor frontrunner Rami Malek) with the Queen story under difficult circumstances when director Bryan Singer was fired and replaced by Dexter Fletcher. Ottman beat “Roma” director/editor Alfonso Cuarón and co-editor Adam Gough, Barry Alexander Brown (“BlacKkKlansman”), Tom Cross (“First Man”), and Jay Cassidy (“A Star Is Born”).

Last year, the Academy documentary branch had to grapple with a record 170 documentary feature submissions for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar. This year, it wasn’t not so bad: only 166 were entered. The short list of 15 was announced December 17, along with eight others for the first time on a single date this year.
All year, branch members have been getting lists of secure online screeners available to watch on the Academy website, increasing in volume. It’s a burden to watch them all, so the ones with the most attention move to the top of the much-watch list. The early advantage went to early box office hits that were made available in the summer such as “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” (Focus Features), “Rbg” (CNN/Magnolia), and “Three Identical Strangers” (CNN/Neon), as well as August/September openers including critically hailed “Dark Money” (PBS), “Crime + Punishment” and “Minding the Gap...

To this day, Robin Williams remains a comedy icon, and even though he is gone, the legacy of his film work lives on. That legacy is a large part of the new documentary “Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind,” which is currently showing and streaming on HBO. Equally adept at outrageous comedy and sensitive drama, Williams was a one-of-a-kind performer, one whose unique style will likely never be equaled. He tragically died on August 11, 2014.
After success as a stand-up comic and television stardom via “Mork and Mindy,” Williams turned to film and achieved success far beyond what his TV success could have indicated. He won an Academy Award for “Good Will Hunting” (1997), one of four Oscar nominations he earned in his career. Williams also earned two Screen Actors Guild Awards (for 1996’s “The Birdcage” and “Good Will Hunting”) and received nine Golden Globe nominations, winning statues for 1987’s “Good Morning, Vietnam,...

The archetype of the tragic clown is a seductive one. And the insidious idea that somehow, the cost of giving immeasurable pleasure to millions is unbearable personal agony was given a boost on August 11, 2014, when beloved comedian and global movie star Robin Williams committed suicide. Even those of us not necessarily among the front ranks of diehard Williams fans were shocked and saddened, caught up, it feels like, in the easy narrative of “tortured genius finally succumbing to his demons.” Praise be, then, for Marina Zenovich‘s formally unadventurous but satisfyingly celebratory documentary “Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind” which premieres on HBO soon.

On Monday, July 16, HBO will debut the highly-anticipated documentary Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind. The film is set to explore the life and career of the beloved comedian, who tragically died on Aug. 11, 2014, of apparent suicide. It was later revealed that Robin Williams was suffering from Lewy body dementia. The actor was 63. One thing that people may not realize is that Robin is survived by three adult children: Zak, Zelda, and Cody. According to a press release from HBO, an in-depth interview with his oldest son, Zak, will be included in the documentary.
Born on April 11, 1983, Zak is 35 years old and is the only child that Robin had with his first wife, Valerie Velardi. In 2008, Zak married Alex Mallick, the executive director of Re:store Justice, and an advocate of criminal justice reform. Unlike his father and siblings, Zak isn't part of the showbiz community, although he did star in 2008's The Graduates.

When Robin Williams died in 2014 at the age of 63, the news landed with a shock for several reasons. Though his final years found him treading water professionally, he was still Robin Williams – Oscar-winning actor, stand-up hall-of-famer, as big a star as ever lived. Few knew he’d been ill and, as always with suicides, those left behind struggled with the reasons for the comedian taking his own life. And, unlike older stars whose careers are often subject to long reassessments in their later years, he died without leaving behind a...

Bobcat Goldthwait enjoyed a long friendship with Robin Williams since they met at a comedy club kitchen in the 1980s up until Williams’ death in 2014. But Goldthwait has no current plans to watch HBO’s upcoming documentary about Williams’ life and career.
“I probably won’t watch the movie,” Goldthwait told Variety at Wednesday’s premiere of his new “Misfits & Monsters” anthology series. “Not out of protest — I just miss my friend, and I think it would be hard.”
The documentary, “Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind,” features interviews with some of Williams’ closest friends and colleagues, including his longtime comedy partner Billy Crystal and his “Mork & Mindy” co-star Pam Dawber. But when the filmmakers asked Goldthwait to participate, he declined.
“I wish them all the luck on the movie,” Goldthwait said. “I kind of stayed away. Our relationship is very personal.”

Film historian and documentarian Mark Cousins, serving on the Karlovy Vary Film Festival main jury this year, is screening his latest film “The Eyes of Orson Welles,” which considers the seminal director’s off-screen art. The doc plays in the fest’s Out of the Past section, which this year focuses as much on great filmmakers themselves rather than showcasing their work.
Showing alongside “Hal,” Amy Scott’s docu on Hal Ashby and “Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind” by Marina Zenovich, Cousins’ tribute and investigation of Welles as a graphic artist unfolds as the Irish-Scottish filmmaker treads in his subject’s footsteps – and sometimes even his boots.

David Steinberg, executive producer of “Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind” and longtime manager to Williams, watched the legendary comedian perform countless shows over the years. But one memory that sticks out occurred while his client was on a United Service Organizations tour, where Williams performed standup for hundreds of wounded servicemen and women before personally greeting each of them.
“Someone who could do that can certainly mask some of what’s going on inside of him,” Steinberg told Variety.
On the red carpet for Wednesday’s premiere of HBO’s Williams documentary at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, filmmakers, actors and comedians shared their on-screen and off-screen memories of Williams, who died by suicide in 2014.
Though nearly four years have passed since Williams’ death, mental health has been a widely discussed topic in recent weeks following the suicides of fashion designer Kate Spade and cooking personality Anthony Bourdain.

As part of its celebration of the best of independent moviemaking from around the world, including from the U.S., this year’s Munich Film Festival will include works highlighting some of today’s defining issues: the MeToo debate, racism, the increasingly troubling nature of social media and the impact of ever-growing surveillance.
The festival, which runs June 28 to July 7, opens with Joachim A. For festival director Diana Iljine, the film is particularly timely: “Just like the famous first words of ‘Mack the Knife’ — ‘And the shark, he has teeth’ — one might say: This film, it has teeth. At a pivotal moment in recent history,...

HBO has released the first trailer for their upcoming documentary, Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind. I had a chance to see this film at Sundance earlier this year and I absolutely loved it!
It was such a wonderful and intimate look at the life of Robin Williams, it offers insight into the kind of person he was, and what made him tick. I've been a fan of Williams ever since I first saw him in the classic 80s sitcom Mork and Mindy. Like many of you, I grew up with Williams in my life and I always rushed out to see his movies. It was shocking to learn that he had killed himself. This is a guy who just brought so much joy, laughter, and happiness into people's lives. Who would have known the things he was struggling with.
This doc dives into these things and it's filled with all kind of emotions.
