Alex Garland has been sharing his thoughts on his new movie, Annihilation, being dropped from a UK cinema release late in the day.
Last week, we got the sudden and not very happy news that Alex Garland’s second film as director, Annihilation, is being sent to Netflix in most places of the world, rather than getting its planned cinema release.
See related Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 episode 3 review: A Life Spent Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 episodes 1 & 2 review: Orientation
The move was apparently due to a battle between producers and Paramount Pictures, and in the end, the latter will only release Annihilation on cinemas screens in the USA, Canada and China. Elsewhere, it’ll go to Netflix less than three weeks after its Us cinema bow.
Garland, who previously directed the Oscar-winning Ex Machina, has been chatting for the first time about the news.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer, the latest feature from Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, is set in a recognizably American city, but otherwise occupies much the same kind of off-kilter reality as Lanthimos’ previous film, last year’s The Lobster. Steven Murphy (Colin Farrell) is a successful heart surgeon who returns every night to his stately house, attentive wife Anna (Nicole Kidman), and their two children. During his days at the hospital, he alternately spends time with and deflects a teenaged boy, Martin (Barry Keoghan), to whom he seems to owe some debt, the origin of which is unclear. A. O. Scott continues at The New York Times:It’s made clear soon enough. Martin, who seems both a little slow and spookily intuitive, turns out to be the evil force who will torment the Murphys. Some years earlier, Steven had performed an operation on the boy’s father, who subsequently died.

Lindsey Stirling pushed through her pain on this week’s Dancing with the Stars.
Still recovering from a rib injury she suffered Sunday, the violinist hit the dance floor Monday night to perform a speedy paso doblé. Despite the fact that she had been unable to fully rehearse, she earned a 27/30 from the judges — and her pro partner Mark Ballas is just happy that she’s on the mend.
“She’s doing better,” he told reporters after the show. “She wanted to be here tonight , but I told her she needed to go rest and put ice on her ribs.

James Packer says his relationship with Mariah Carey was a "mistake."
In an interview with Weekend Australia magazine published on Friday, the billionaire businessman opened up about his engagement with Carey, claiming that he was at a "low point" in his life when the two were together.
“I was at a low point in my personal life,” Packer shared. “She was kind, exciting and fun. Mariah is a woman of substance. But it was a mistake for her and a mistake for me.”
Packer and Carey started dating in 2015 and split in October 2016, just nine months after announcing their engagement. The pair's breakup wasn't pretty -- in a statement to Et at the time, Carey's rep said the two hadn't seen each other since having a fight in Greece.

Now that O.J. Simpson is out of prison, the sister of Nicole Brown Simpson says the fact that he’s a free man doesn’t bother her.

Hey Big Brother fans. Man, did we experience some fireworks today August 28th. Raven totally lost her her sh@#t and went completely off on Jason after the big Pov Ceremony. We expected this to happen and it totally did. What we didn’t expect is for Matt to get so crazy but he did. He tried to play calm at first but eventually he lost his sh#@t too! However, his main argument was really dumb. He kept accusing Matt of hiding in the storage room after the Pov Ceremony which wasn’t really true. Anyways, the whole fight got started because Jason held true to his decision and didn’t renom Kevin which left Raven and Matt on the chopping block. This is of course left them knowing that one of them is definitely going home this week. We’re going to give you guys a complete run-down of the events.

Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Mma champion Conor McGregor will collide during a much-anticipated boxing match in Las Vegas on August 26.
Mayweather, 40, the undefeated and now-unretired boxing legend, and McGregor, 29, the current Ufc lightweight champion, are two of the most polarizing figures in sports. Their dominance, combined with their confidence, personalities and egos, have made for some of the hottest pay-per-view events of the last decade. Their match is expected to draw a record audience of 50 million people—but some argue that the real fight has already happened outside of the ring.

Michael K. Williams has officially been cut from the Han Solo anthology movie amid ongoing reshoots.
Deadline has the scoop, revealing that Williams, who had originally signed on to play a “kick-ass” half-human, half-animal in the Star Wars spinoff, bowed out of the project due to a recent scheduling conflict with The Red Sea Diving Resort. Those two projects are now beginning to overlap, no thanks to Disney and Lucasfilm’s decision to replace erstwhile Han Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller with the Oscar-winning Ron Howard, and delay production as a result.
Almost two months have passed since that sudden switcheroo, and things have been moving a mile a minute ever since. Now, with reshoots looming and Michael K. Williams unavailable due to other commitments, Lucasfilm has decided to cut his character entirely.
Here’s what the actor told Deadline:

With the overwhelming amounts of television currently on the air (not to mention all the great series of the past), some producers and stars are making a new, stress-free pitch to potential viewers.
The message, as relayed by the talent behind several shows recently showcased at the Television Critics Association press tour: It’s simple, and as opposed to “a [number varies]-hour-long movie,” it’s as stand-alone as possible.
Mark Duplass, when describing “Room 104,” the new anthology series he’s producing for HBO, was most explicit about making the show a “casual, daily” experience. “You pop in, you watch one episode, have some sex with that episode. Then you don’t even have to come back for another three episodes,” he said.
“We’re the Tinder of television,” partner and brother Jay Duplass added. “You swipe left, swipe right.”

Legendary glam/punk photographer Mick Rock is a primary player in music/ rock history, having provided some of the most iconic rock imagery to grace the careers and album covers of artists like Bowie, Blondie, Lou Reed, Queen and Iggy Pop.
Rock captured key moments from classic concerts including that iconic shot of Bowie performing fellatio on Mick Ronson’s guitar during the Ziggy Stardust era. He also designed the album covers of Bowie’s Space Oddity, Lou Reed’s Transformer, Iggy and The Stooges’ Raw Power and directed many of Bowie’s music videos.
Rock’s unruly work Mo was also a lifestyle choice. Integrating hard partying and meditation into his photography/practice by saturating himself in the event he was covering instead of adopting the role of a passive observer, yet Rock provided some outstanding imagery as a result.

Emmy nominations are out, and they largely went as expected for “The Leftovers”: No nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, nothing for leads Justin Theroux or Carrie Coon (though the latter omission was stunning), nothing for writers Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta (or any of the talented staff), no nod for the gorgeous work of director Mimi Leder, and very nearly nothing across the board.
Save for one glorious exception: Ann Dowd.
Up for her turn on “The Handmaid’s Tale” as a supporting actress, Dowd snagged her second nomination of the morning as a guest actress on “The Leftovers.” To say this came as exciting news would be an understatement. The level of respect and adoration heaped upon Dowd by her fellow cast members, the writers, and Leder is unparalleled; to see the industry follow suit is the kind of things that keeps us invested in the Emmys. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: male cosplayers don’t get enough respect. It’s one of the few areas where I think there’s a legitimate reverse sexism problem. You rarely if ever see a male cosplayer get the kind of follow counts on social media that the females do. It’s not like I’m here totally whining about it though. It is what it is but I felt it was certainly worth mentioning. If you haven’t heard of Stoosh, I don’t blame you. The guy only has 2,600 likes on his Fb page yet the stuff he puts out
