Anthony Anderson paid tribute to classic TV shows Good Times, Facts of Life, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and Miami Vice in the opening musical number on tonight’s Emmys, with the Black-ish star belting out some earworm theme songs from behind his piano.
“No Good Times, no Black-ish,” Anderson said introducing the former’s memorable “ain’t we lucky we got ’em” theme song, the show’s famous “Black Jesus” portrait hanging in the background.
For Miami Vice‘s “In The Air Tonight,” Anderson was joined by blink-182’s Travis Barker on drums.
Anderson made his entrance spoofing Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (re-titled Mr. Anderson’s Neighborhood), changing out of a fur (seemingly) coat for a tux jacket.
Following the brief opening musical number — just snippets from the three theme songs — Anderson, an 11-time Emmy nominee for the ABC sitcom making his Emmy hosting debut, laid down some ground rules (his mother...

Gina Rodriguez is getting a visitor from the other side.
The Jane the Virgin vet stars in ABC’s new comedy Not Dead Yet — premiering this Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 8:30/7:30c — as Nell Serrano, a journalist who moves back to the States from London after a broken engagement. Nell gets a job at the local newspaper where she used to work, but rather than picking up where she left off, Nell is assigned to the lowly obituary beat. And the gig comes with an unexpected and not entirely welcome perk: the people Nell is writing about appear to her as ghosts!

“Borat” fans” tuning into the controversial sequel, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” this weekend on Amazon Prime might be struck by a notable absence: Luenell, the comedian and actress who was one of the few hired actors in the 2006 original. Producers at Levity Live consider themselves lucky. The shows they were working on — like Food Network’s “Restaurant: Impossible,” Adult Swim’s “Black Jesus” and Hgtv’s “House Hunters” — had all wrapped principal photography by March when the pandemic hit. There was only one problem: Post-production needed to be completed.
But the company was also prepared. In the weeks before the coronavirus forced the closure of many offices throughout the entertainment industry, Levity Live preordered huge hard drives to transfer more than 520Tb of footage per day that enabled it to move its 140 post workers from the office to their homes.
John Bravakis, executive VP and chief operating officer at Triage Entertainment, a production company owned by Levity Live that also produces Ovation’s “Inside the Actors Studio,” notes that early planning — along with the good fortune to not have any serialized reality shows in its pipeline — meant Levity and...

Days before he passed away, John Witherspoon appeared on Dl Hughley’s radio show to explain why he’s still drawing crowds and working in this business. “Try to be as funny as you can as that character. You can’t be an old dude trying to act young, talking hip hop. I don’t know hip hop. I don’t even know how to turn my phone off.” Witherspoon stayed true to his characters no matter whom he played or how old he got, and the audience resonated with that. Here are some of the great character actor’s finest moments on screen.

Marijuana-centric, multi-platform media company PRØHBTD has announced the start of pre-production on “High Cuisine,” a new travel, food and drug-infused docuseries, in partnership with Totem Media.
The 10-episode series will follow Noah Tucker and Anthony Joseph — two veteran chefs of Michelin-starred restaurants in Amsterdam and London — as they travel the world in search of local dishes and mind-altering ingredients in a mission to create “truly forbidden cuisine.” Some of those ingredients may include things like kanna, Syrian rue, and ‘magic’ mushrooms — all which have been known to provide users with a euphoric high, though the company stresses that the ingredients are “safe and mostly legal.”

“We are making a big push investing in premium content that expands PRØHBTD’s voice and audience and ‘High Cuisine’ is evidence of that,” said PRØHBTD’s chief content officer Joshua Otten.

More than 20 years before “Get Out” transformed widespread anxieties about racism into a riveting horror-comedy, Rusty Cundieff’s “Tales From the Hood” got the ball rolling. Taking a tip from “Tales From the Crypt,” the 1995 horror anthology tackled the issues that terrorized black communities in America, from racist police officers to gang violence and the Kkk. With those themes still very much a part of the national conversation, “Tales From the Hood” is finally receiving a long-overdue sequel. With Spike Lee again attached as a producer, “Tales From the Hood 2” premieres this month at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal ahead of its direct-to-dvd release later this year.
For those who missed out on the original: Cundieff, whose 1993 hip-hop mockumentary “Fear of a Black Hat” was a breakout Sundance hit, used a framing device that stretches back to the E.C. Comics days. Creepy funeral home director Mr. Simms...

A week after after ascending to TV heaven in an elaborately staged-performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar Live,” John Legend is back on earth making content just like “Ordinary People” … on a cellphone.

The Oscar winner shot the music video for his new single “A Good Night” entirely on a cell phone.
Partnering with Google and it’s flagship Pixel 2 phone, the video tells the story of a “cute-meet” in a club where both people have an inkling that this could be “the one.”

“The song evoked ‘Rock With You’ from Michael Jackson, that kind of feel good party song,” Legend told an intimate crowd of 50 industry types atop Neuehouse in Hollywood on Thursday night.
“Eventually we stumbled on the idea of doing a song about meeting your future soulmate in that moment. We thought it was a cool concept to talk about ‘Hey, I think I just met my wife’ in a song.”
Legend and team revealed the song and video a few hours before their worldwide release.

“We were fascinated by the idea of using a smartphone to film a big budget music video,” Legend said. “A video that brings the smartphone dating experience to life.”
As Lve wine circulated (which Legend had in hand and touted by name), the Party Report spotted the creative ensemble behind the production, Rob English and Mishka Kornai, as well as producer Mike Jackson (“La La Land”). Jackson has a touch for debuts amongst intimate Hollywood crowds.

Amongst the cheery mood on a chilly night, reps from Google were visiting southern California just days after the deadly shooting at subsidiary company YouTube’s headquarters. They addressed the tragedy.
“Given the events at YouTube this week, I want to take a minute to say that our thoughts are with our extended family there,” Emily Clarke, Communications Manger for Pixel, said while making introductions. “We’re really thankful for how the community has come together and helped us respond and heal to that.”

“There’s a lot going on in the world right now,” Legend added, when he fielded questions from guests. “Sometimes it’s nice to just have music that makes you feel good.”
Legend and wife Chrissy Teigen are social media extroverts, a power couple who are known for candid and timely posts. There’s no social media “team” ginning up content behind the curtain.

Black Lightning cleared a huge superhero hurdle in "Black Jesus: The Book of Crucifixion." Jefferson was arrested for (planted) drug possession and had to "prove" that he wasn't Black Lightning to get out of the whole mess. Even though "Black Jesus" deal with a well-worn superhero trope, the episode still managed to be fantastic in how it approached the emotional toll that being arrested had on Jefferson.
Yet as strong as the episode was, another obstacle still needs to be conquered. Inspector Deputy Chief Henderson needs to be let in on the fact that his best friend is Freeland's main vigilante protector, as soon as possible.

Now that's how you execute a Big reveal!
There were many revelations on Black Lightning Season 1 Episode 6, but the biggest of which came at the end of the hour, and it found Anissa in a no holds barred fight with Black Lightning.
It was the type of scene you would expect closer to the season finale, but we are not even halfway through Black Lightning Season 1 yet. Given that Anissa was heading over to the lab, it was obvious she was going to cross paths with her father.
The fight, however, came out of the left field, and that was all down to the darn duct tape over Lynn's mouth. Anissa disposing of the bad guys before they got to steal the files was so freaking satisfying.
The sheer look of horror on Lynn's face when she realized that her daughter was out fighting crime like her father was priceless.

How long will it take for Anissa to swoop in and give Black Lightning a rest?
That thought crossed my mind several times while watching Black Lightning Season 1 Episode 5, which found the titular hero struggling with the drawbacks of being a superhero.
We already know that this isn't Jefferson's first rodeo, but he needs to stop and take a long hard look at himself and establish some ground rules to stay healthy.
We don't know all the details about what really happens to the body with all that electricity whizzing around, but we do know that Jefferson has found himself immobile in the past.
If you watch Black Lightning online, you will know that's why Lynn has worried about him going out on the streets of Freeland trying to keep everyone safe.

Jefferson Pierce is already fighting a war on two fronts, at work and in his free time, against The 100 again on Black Lightning but a third might be added soon. Jefferson's home life might be under attack too, if the cliffhanger to the episode "Black Jesus" can be believed. After being paralyzed by a stray bullet, Jennifer's boyfriend, Khalil Payne, was visited by Black Lightning's main villain, Tobias Whale. It was all in an attempt to turn the youth against the series' hero, with offer to join forces. It's an offer that Khalil seems perfectly poised to take.

Black Lightning began with a lot of Jefferson Pierce outside of his electrified suit. Yet, understandably, as he gives the show its name, Black Lightning became much more front and center than Jefferson Pierce, eventually overshadowing Jefferson's day job as principal.
In the episode "Black Jesus," Black Lightning went right back to the well of Jefferson as principal, having him deal with a superhero problem both in and out of his suit. "Black Jesus" might've not been the best Black Lightning episode to date but it had a format that most episodes of the series should follow in the future.

Not everyone can be saved.
That sentiment echoed through Black Lightning Season 1 Episode 4 as Jefferson continued to try and come to terms with fighting crime on the mean streets of Freeland after a prolonged absence.
Freeland is so deeply rooted in crime that it was inevitable drugs would make their way into the narrative.
What happens when you have the most addictive drug around, and you have a group of adolescent teenagers?
You get results. These dealers were using the "try before you buy" shtick to get the kids hooked on the drugs and that means dollars for Lady Eve's bottom line.
Black Lightning’s death was your calling card, and now people are beginning to feel like they’ve been deceived and it’s affecting my bottom line.

With a new drug called Green Light sweeping through the town, Jefferson spends most of his time tracking down the drug dealers during this episode of Black Lightning, titled "Black Jesus." But there's a bigger game happening. And Tobias may just get Jennifer's boyfriend, Khalil, on his side in the fight against Black Lightning.
"Black Jesus" begins with someone freaking out in the boys' bathroom at school. Jefferson rushes into action and finds a kid named Bernard losing it. Suddenly, Bernard grabs and throws a urinal. Jefferson actually has to use his powers to subdue him. Then Jefferson searches Bernard's pockets and finds drugs. Anissa, meanwhile, drives through the city and spots some of her students buying these same drugs. One of the drug dealers threatens her, and they almost get into an altercation.

Will Packer and Aaron McGruder developing series that envisions new nation created by freed African Americans.
On the heels of HBO’s fumbled announcement of its upcoming alternate history drama Confederate, Amazon is joining forces with prolific producer Will Packer for its own alternate history series.
Amazon is developing Black America, which presents an alternate history where newly freed African-Americans have secured the Southern states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama post-Reconstruction as reparations for slavery, and with that land, the freedom to shape their own destiny.
The sovereign nation they form, New Colonia, has endured a tumultuous and sometimes violent relationship with its looming “Big Neighbor,” both ally and foe, the United States. The past 150 years have been witness to military incursions, assassinations, regime change, and coups.
