These past two years I've been fortunate to experience everything from a séance and a Vampire Ball to Halloween costume parties in April at The Overlook Film Festival (you can read all about it in my previous event report), and as I prepare to attend "summer camp for horror fans" for a third year in a row, the initial lineup for the festival's 2024 edition already has me wishing it were time to head to the Big Easy.
Brimming with must-see screenings and immersive experiences, the initial lineup for The Overlook Film Festival 2024 has plenty for horror fans to mark on their calendars between April 4th–7th, including Cuckoo, Abigail, I Saw the TV Glow, Blackout, a 50th anniversary screening of Phantom of the Paradise (with Paul Williams in attendance), and a 10th anniversary screening of Oculus with director Mike Flanagan, who will be in attendance along with Kate Siegel to...

Radio Silence (V/H/S, Southbound, Scream, Scream VI) returns to the big screen with Universal horror movie Abigail in April, and the film’s MPA rating has arrived this week.
Releasing April 19, Abigail has been rated “R” for…
“Strong bloody violence and gore throughout, pervasive language and brief drug use.”
Watch the official trailer for Abigail below, which is a bloody blast. The Don’t Breathe-esque setup introduces a band of criminals who attempt to kidnap a seemingly innocent young girl. Of course, the little girl turns out to be a vampire – a ballerina vampire, to be specific.
The cast for this one is absolutely stacked with talent, and the killer premise looks to have been executed by Radio Silence in the most fun – and bloody – way possible. It channels the spirit of their pre-Scream horror hit Ready or Not, and it promises to be a gory good time.

The box office underperformance of The Mummy back in 2017 notably spelled the end of Universal’s “Dark Universe” plans, the film intended to kickstart a Marvel-style universe for the Universal Monsters to hang around in. With the “Dark Universe” dead on arrival, Universal quickly pivoted to smaller one-shot horror tales, kicking off with The Invisible Man in 2020.
Made on a budget of just $7 million, director Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man scared up $144 million worldwide right before the pandemic decimated the box office, suggesting that Universal had finally figured out a way to turn their iconic monsters into box office stars again.
But then came Renfield earlier this year, a horror-comedy take on Dracula and his loyal henchman. Made on a reported production budget of $65 million, Renfield was a flop in theaters back in April of this year, sinking its fangs into just $26.7 million at the box office. Just a few short months later,...

Starring “House of Flowers’” Paco Leon, produced by “Patria” showrunner Aitor Gabilondo for network Mediaset España, and written by “Elite” creator Darío Madrona, Disney Plus’ first Spanish original bows Friday in Spain on Star.
Billed as “a kind of ‘Love Actually’ in times of pandemic,” “Besos al Aire” weighs in as a two-part miniseries, crisscrossing eight stories of lockdown love sparked by Spain’s first – and worst – March 14-May 2 confinement. Though a romantic comedy, “Besos al Aire” looks likely to stand as the first big, scripted record of how Spaniards reacted to Covid-19. Though a pickup, not an original production, it may also say something about what Disney Plus and Star will produce or buy in Spain, and the state of Spanish drama series production in general. Five takes on the new series:

When Gayle King booked her Tuesday night appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” weeks ago, the “CBS This Morning” co-host and O Magazine editor-at-large was prepared to chat about “Oprah’s Favorite Things,” best friend Oprah Winfrey’s annual super-luxe wish list. But, as King sagely noted during the episode, things change…and fast. Initially imagined as a fluffy, fun, holiday-ready segment, King instead was tasked with talking about the very recent firing of her former co-host Charlie Rose, who had been ousted from CBS for allegations of sexual harassment mere hours before King took the “Late Show” stage.
“I came this close to canceling,” King admitted when she first came out.

Charlie Rose’s alleged history with sexual harassment was exposed in a report from The Washington Post in which eight women came forward and accused the talk show host and journalist of making unwanted sexual advances toward them. Surprisingly, a brief moment from Wes Anderson’s 2001 comedy-drama “The Royal Tenenbaums” is going viral in the wake of the allegations made against Rose.

Although she hasn’t lined up as many masterpieces as Isabelle Huppert, nor does she have the cinema populaire appeal of Sophie Marceau, 51-year-old actress Karin Viard has carved an impressive niche for herself in French films of the past decade or so.

In a move that should be shocking to absolutely no one, ABC named Ryan Seacrest its “American Idol” host on Thursday. Seacrest’s busy schedule doesn’t exactly offer a lot of flexibility — especially when you consider that “Idol” tapes in Los Angeles and his new gig as co-host of “Live With Kelly and Ryan” is Monday-Friday in New York City. And then there is his daily syndicated radio show, “On Air With Ryan Seacrest.” How is Seacrest going to possibly balance all of that? (Thank goodness “Knock Knock Live” didn’t make it to season 2.) Well, for starters, ABC built Seacrest an on-site.

Along with “On Air” and “Live,” Seacrest is sure to schedule in workouts for himself.

The era of podcasts and audio storytelling is upon us, and it’s about time that theater got into the game. Playing On Air, a series of one-act plays by accomplished playwrights read by some of the industry’s top actors, was launched onto the airwaves in 2014 by theater producer Claudia Catania. As creator, artistic producer, and host of each episode, Catania was inspired during a reading of a short play, at which everyone was gathered informally in folding chairs. “I had been to one too many readings where there’s a cast of actors knocking one’s socks off and thought, Wait a minute—why don’t we bring the folding chairs to millions of people?” she told Backstage. Since audio podcasts can be distributed to a wide audience inexpensively, she reached out to a radio producer, then to writer Christopher Durang—the first of many artists who agreed...
