Here’s an exclusive look at Radio Dreams, the newest feature from Iranian-British director Babak Jalali (Frontier Blues), in theaters in May. Film centers on the real, if semi-functioning world of Pars-fm, a Farsi-language San Francisco radio station. Over the course of a single day, program manager Hamid – a brilliant, misunderstood Iranian writer, played by folk singer-songwriter Mohsen Namjoo, prepares for a live broadcast that will pair Metallica with Kabul Dreams…...

With his three features — Aftershool, Simon Killer, and, most recently, Christine — director Antonio Campos has crafted a trilogy of tightly controlled character studies that put us in the scarred minds of our protagonists like few other emerging directors. To get a sense of the formative films in his life, as part of his submission to the latest Sight & Sound poll, the director revealed his 10 favorite films.
Including his “favorite film” A Clockwork Orange (as well as another Kubrick feature), there’s also classics from Francis Ford Coppola, Ingmar Bergman, and François Truffaut. Also popping up are films from Michael Haneke and Bruno Dumont, which should be no surprise if you’ve seen one of Campos’ films, and the oldest selection is King Vidor‘s The Crowd, a technically marvelous achievement from the silent era.
Check out this picks below, following a primer quote from his interview with Slant:
I grew up on narrative cinema.

Iran-born writer/director Babak Jalali will enter the history books of the International Film Festival Rotterdam as the first winner in the revamped main competition where instead of honoring three emerging filmmakers, the award goes to only one. Jalali debuted with the first feature in 2009, Frontier Blues, shot in his hometown of Gorgan. In fixed shots and a dose of absurdity, the director follows four protagonists and the topic of isolation. Isolation is tackled also in his award-winning sophomore feature Radio Dreams (read the review), set inside a small radio station broadcasting for Iranian community in Bay Area. Jalali infuses the melancholia of his debut into Radio Dreams as well, however he never forgets about subtle, deadpan and absurd humor in capturing proceedings of one...

Despite being brought up and educated in London, Iranian filmmaker Babak Jalali shot his sophomore feature Radio Dreams in the Bay Area of San Francisco. His stylistic preferences and personal signature aesthetics began to take bolder shape in his debut Frontier Blues (2009), shot in his hometown of Gorgan in northern Iran. "My favourite director, considering the whole body of work, is Aki Kaurismäki, and I like the kind of deadpan humour you can find in Beckett stories", Jalali states, referencing Scandinavian cinema and absurdist literature. Radio Dreams tells the story of several individuals, members of a displaced Iranian and Afghan collective. In the director's words, it is "an observation film about a group that happened to be a minority" on "existing in a kind of...

Other winners included Bodkin Ras, Land Of Mine and Embrace Of The Serpent.
Babak Jalali’s Radio Dreams has tonight won the Hivos Tiger Awards Competition and €40,000 - shared by director and producer - at the 45th International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) (Jan 27-Feb 7).
The film, which received its world premiere at Iffr, is a comedy about an Iranian writer who pursues an ambitious goal of bringing together Metallica and Kabul Dreams, Afghanistan’s first rock band. It marks the second feature of Jalali, whose Frontier Blues debuted at Locarno in 2009.
The jury said it had awarded the prize to Radio Dreams “for its subtle and humorous reflection on displacement and alienation of a group of misfits in a foreign culture.” [Click here for Babak Jalali interview]
In addition, a special jury award worth €10,000 was presented to La última tierra by Pablo Lamar, “for exceptional artistic achievement in sound design”. [Click here for interview]

Not all projects should be made or released just because they go through film labs, says Bero Beyer.
The new artistic director of International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr), Bero Beyer, has questioned the role of talent schemes across the industry, saying there is a need to curate “gems” among a glut of “mediocre” features.
Speaking on the second day of CineMart, Iffr’s long-established co-production market, Beyer said: “It seems as if the R&D department of the film industry has moved to funds and festivals, in particular to specialised talent development programs that have grown into alternate financing models for feature films.”
Beyer, previously an independent producer on films such as Paradise Now and Atlantic., said having the weight of a major festival behind a project provided an advantage to features from young filmmakers and was not typical of the indie film process.
“Several schemes have been initiated to create a space for artistic freedom,” he said...

Pixar hit benefits from school holidays to break records while Karate Kid beats A-Team in retro face-off
The winner
With just shy of £40m earned from 14 days on release, Toy Story 3 is already earning its place in the record books. A week ago, it stood at number 24 in the chart recording the UK's all-time biggest animated hits. Seven days later, and it has overtaken 21 of those titles, including such monster hits as Shrek The Third (£38.74m), The Simpsons Movie (£38.66m), Monsters, Inc (£37.91m) and Finding Nemo (£37.36m). In the animated hall of fame, Toy Story 3 now stands in third place, behind the lifetime totals of only Shrek 2 (£48.24m) and Toy Story 2 (£44.31m). Since its current rate of decline is modest, it is almost certain to snatch the all-time animated crown by this time next week.
Toy Story 3's particularly aggressive preview strategy makes comparisons with other top performers tricky,...

The A-Team (12A)
(Joe Carnahan, 2010, Us) Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Biel. 119 mins
Versus
The Karate Kid (PG)
(Harald Zwart, 2010, Us) Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan, Taraji P Henson. 140 mins
Who should you put your money on in the clash of the 1980s remakes? In the red corner, a meat locker full of wisecracking testosterone; in the blue, a Hollywood brat chop-socking it to the Chinese. Both bring their stories up-to-date (the A-Team are now post-Iraq special ops; the Karate Kid is set in Beijing, and more of a kung fu kid), while playing on the old shtick, and both overstay their welcome by a good half-hour. The A-Team strikes the right cartoony tone, but then bludgeons you into boredom with action. The Karate Kid at least earns its predictable payoff, despite the nepotism and tourist-brochure China. It's no knockout, but the Kid wins this bout on points.

(Vincenzo Natali, 2009, Us) Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, Delphine Chanéac. 104 mins
In case anyone thought mucking around with animal genes then raising the resultant mutant as your own child was a good idea, here's a strong warning. Scientists Brody and Polley initially enthuse over their secret breakthrough/lovechild, but several "do you really think we should be doing this?" moments later, they're living out every parent's worst nightmare: that your child grows wings and a venomous tail and turns on you. It's not up to Cronenberg standards, but it's smarter, less predictable and much funnier than it sounds.
Toy Story 3 (U)
(Lee Unkrich, 2010, Us) Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack. 109 mins
Plaything perils at the daycare centre become a lesson in mortality, comradeship, prison-breaking and waste management in this near-perfect sequel. As usual, it's packed with thrills and gags, but as with Pixar's Up, there are moments when grown-ups...

Two highly-anticipated second feature films from U.S. underground filmmakers will be making their World Premieres all the way over at the 64th annual Edinburgh International Film Festival, which will run for twelve days on June 16-27. The films are Rona Mark’s The Crab and Zach Clark’s Vacation!.
The Crab, which screens on June 21, is the touching story of a verbally abusive man born with two enormous, mutant-like hands; while Vacation!, which screens on June 20, tracks four urban gals let loose in a sunny seaside resort down South.
Both Mark and Clark previously screened their debut features at Eiff. Mark’s Strange Girls screened there in 2008 and Clark’s Modern Love Is Automatic screened in 2009. Both films also ended up as runners-up in Bad Lit’s annual Movie of the Year award, again Strange Girls in 2008 and Modern Love in 2009. Sadly, these two masterpieces are still unavailable on...
