“Put your phones away!” Billie Joe Armstrong barked to 1,100 lucky Green Day fans that crammed into New York’s Irving Plaza Thursday night for a special SiriusXM concert celebrating the release of the band’s new LP, Saviors. “Put them away! Just enjoy the moment. The last thing we need is for fuckin’ Elon Musk to be bitchin’ about anything anymore.”
He was referring to Musk’s New Year’s day Tweet where he said Green Day went from “raging against the machine to milquetoastedly (sic) raging for it” because...

Green Day will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Dookie and the 20th anniversary of American Idiot by playing both landmark albums in their entirety on their summer stadium tour with the Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and the Linda Lindas.
“What a fuckin’ moment it’s going to be,” Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt tells Rolling Stone. “We’ve never done anything like this before. And there’s a really good chance we’ll never do it again.”
Dirnt estimates it’ll take about 90 minutes to play both albums. “We’ll then...

Three decades ago, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong was sarcastically singing “Welcome to Paradise.” Now at age 51, he’s staidly singing “Welcome to my problems” on “Dilemma,” a plaintive, swinging rocker on Green Day’s 14th LP, Saviors, which owes a debt to Fifties rock and the Ramones. “I was sober now I’m drunk again,” he wails in the chorus. “I’m in trouble and in love again/I don’t want to be a dead man walking.” It’s one of the album’s best songs and,...

Green Day used their performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on Sunday night to make the ABC special’s audience aware of their political views.
During a performance of the group’s 2004 hit “American Idiot,” initially written during George W. Bush’s presidency about the Iraq war, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong changed the lyrics from, “I’m not part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not part of the Maga agenda.”
The tweak, which the rockers previously made during a performance of the song during the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas, seemed directed at former President Donald Trump and his supporters who have embraced his “Make America Great Again” slogan.
The moment has sparked a backlash from a number of social media users, including Trump supporters. Among those going after the band was Hercules star Kevin Sorbo, who wrote, “Punk rock is pro big government.

Pop-punk trio Green Day, which consists of Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool, and Mike Dirnt, used a meme for their hit song ‘Wake Me Up When September End’ to cryptically tease the project by sending fans to a website to “register for a wake up call.”
The website suggests the name is ‘The American Dream Is Killing Me’.
Fans hit a “snooze” button before typing in their contact details to “set the alarm.” In a video clip, frontman Billie can be seen waking up before a calendar is shown with October 24 circled, meaning fans are just weeks away from finding out what it’s all about, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Last week, the band released a 30th anniversary reissue of their album ‘Dookie’. The ‘Minority’ rockers celebrated three decades of their 1994 record by dropping ‘Dookie (30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)’. The new edition features previously unreleased “Dookie” demos, as well as live...

The Venice Film Festival sails on in Italy — even with much of Hollywood at a standstill.
The annual cinema celebration hosted by La Biennale di Venezia and directed by Alberto Barbera runs from August 30 through September 9. Despite already having lost Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” from its opening night slot due to its SAG-AFTRA talent including star Zendaya being unable to accompany the world premiere due to strike work stoppage orders, Venice has plenty of movie goodness in store for its 80th edition.
Competition highlights include Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” David Fincher’s “The Killer,” Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” Ava DuVernay’s “Origin,” Luc Besson’s “Dogman,” Michel Franco’s “Memory,” Pablo Larrain’s “El Conde,” and many more. Out of competition, Venice will screen new films from Harmony Korine, Richard Linklater, Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, Roman Polanski, and William Friedkin.

Two movies whose directors are likely to draw protests, Woody Allen’s French-language “Coup de Chance” and Roman Polanski’s “The Palace,” will make their world premieres at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival, Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera and La Biennale di Venezia president Roberto Cicutto announced at a Tuesday morning press conference.
Both films will screen out of competition, though they’ll likely draw an inordinate amount of attention at a festival that has assembled a robust lineup of major filmmakers even as it struggles with the effects of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.
Films booked for the Venice main competition include Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic “Maestro”; Yorgos Lanthimos’ sci-fi drama “Poor Things”; Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla Presley film “Priscilla”; Michael Mann’s auto-racing film “Ferrari”; Ava DuVernay’s “Origin,” with Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Niecy Nash-Betts and Vera Farmiga; and David Fincher’s “The Killer,” with Michael Fassbender.

Plenty of tears (and time outs) ahead! Now that The Bachelorette is over, Jimmy Kimmel has a new reality spin-off for Bachelor Nation. The late night host debuted Baby Bachelor in Paradise during his Monday show, and it didn’t disappoint.
Watch: 'The Bachelorette': Rachel Lindsay and Fiancé Bryan Abasolo Dish on Their Relationship & Wedding Plans
“Welcome to paradise, a serene utopia for small children whose parents, for some reason, had no problem with them doing this,” the host quipped in a voice over. “From passionate play dates to canoodling in the kiddie pool, which babies would pair off or be sent napping?”
Several of the youngsters then introduced themselves in traditional Bachelor fashion.
“Hi, my name is Cosette. I always fall for bad boys,” one little girl declared. “Alex is so cute. I make bad decisions!”
Then there was the token villain.

Season six of The Vampire Diaries continues to thrill with its refreshed, revived feel. Here's Caroline's review...
This review contains spoilers.
6.4 Black Hole Sun
Every episode of The Vampire Diaries, by its very nature, presents the writers with opportunities to slide back into the malaise they wallowed in during seasons four and five, quickly re-establishing the status quo and slotting the character back into their prescribed roles. But that’s not what’s happening with season six, and it couldn’t be more thrilling for long-time viewers.
There are new villains, new relationships, new dynamics between old relationships and fresh takes on characters we thought we knew inside and out. Of course Matt would take it upon himself to investigate Tripp; of course Stefan has to start over every 30 years or so to avoid suspicion; of course Elena would have left herself a note should she ever discover what she and Alaric did,...

The Vampire Diaries' sixth season feels like the show of old. Here's Caroline's review of Welcome To Paradise...
This review contains spoilers.
6.3 Welcome To Paradise
The perpetual Stefan/Elena/Damon love triangle has plagued Vampire Diaries for years. It hasn’t been fresh since around the season three mark, before Elena became a vampire and the writers introduced the hilariously misjudged sire bond plotline. Worse than that, it actually felt like the need to keep the triangle revolving was preventing character growth for the three involved parties during seasons four and five.
Splitting them up, then, has been the best and most refreshing part of season six so far. Damon might still be half-pining after Elena, but regardless, the three of them have finally become characters in their own right again. They have wants and needs that don’t directly relate back to each other, and even some new...

This week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, “Welcome to Paradise,” is all about revenge. It starts off with Stefan revealing what he is to his boss and compelling him to do whatever he says. He needs a couple days off from work because he’ll be taking a trip to Whitmore to visit some old friends. Before he leaves, Stefan makes sure to have his boss do his dirty work and burry his dare I say it, girlfriend’s body. I’m surprised Stefan didn’t do that himself but I guess he didn’t care about the girl enough and rage took over. Elena … Continue reading →

Hope appeared to be the running theme of The Vampire Diaries this week. Some people lose hope in their closest friends while others grasp at the last glimmer of it to save themselves. There’s no way around the truth: Stefan is acting like a jerk. He compelled his new boss for some time off on the pretense of getting his revenge on Enzo for snapping Ivy’s neck. Without Damon around to pull him out of this spiral, Caroline is the closest Stefan’s gonna get to someone who actually gives a damn about him and he can’t even be honest with her. When Caroline pleaded with him to just stay now that he was back and he still walked away, I was pissed. But given some time to think about it, the writers have a method to this madness. Yes, Steroline is slowly but surely happening. Elena,...

The Vampire Diaries makes a habit of changing it up every once in a while in a big way, as any decent show should. This extends to the whole gambit – setting, story direction, and character traits. There are very few characters who have maintained a consistent balance over the course of the series, or even make it through a season without going through some sort of major crises that pushes them over the edge (more so in the last few seasons). In “Welcome to Paradise,” two of the main characters exhibit some very uncharacteristic tendencies, and it has some adverse effects on the episode as a whole.
Elena (Nina Dobrev) is stuck in a bliss bubble after having any and all of her fond memories of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) wiped. And it’s kind of obnoxious. For as much as her character has been pegged as the heart of the show,...

On tonight's episode of The Vampire Diaries, "Welcome to Paradise," Stefan visits Elena at Whitmore, but he's got an ulterior motive. Damon and Bonnie meet a stranger who could be friend or foe. Jeremy discovers a loophole that puts Caroline and Elena in danger.
Stefan is on a tear, to say the least. He's abandoned hope of living a normal life in the sanctuary he created for himself thanks to Enzo. Stefan uses unconventional methods to get his asshole of a boss to give him a few days off to go on a revenge spree. Finally, Stefan is returning to the fold. Well, as close as any supernatural creature can get to it. He's also driving around with his dead girlfriend in his trunk. Truthfully, she's as interesting deceased as she was with a pulse. He does plan to return, but it will only be possible if he manages to...

With series 8 referencing 'heaven', Nathan traces Doctor Who's varied relationships with atheism and faith...
I was a massive Simpsons fan as a child. And when I say ‘massive’, I really do mean - huge. It’s still one of the more memorable moments prior to my wedding day: emptying out my childhood bedroom with my (now) wife, only for her to discover notebooks filled with minute observations about the show. Obscure number plates, birthdays of secondary characters, dates of key events and much more besides. Having already paid for the reception venue she couldn’t exactly retract her commitment to marry me, although my mind contemplated that possibility when she hyperventilated laughing at ‘little Nathan’, circa 1999.
My point is this: I wasn’t just a fan, I was an über-fan.
You might be asking, “what’s this got to do with Doctor Who?” - trust me, I’m getting there.
