It kicks off with a big emotional bang: “We used to laugh/We used to sing/We used to dance/We used to believe,” Eddie Vedder sings on “Scared of Fear,” the rocking opener from Pearl Jam’s 12th studio album, one of their best and most personal records ever. When it came time to work on their follow-up to 2020’s Gigaton, band members headed out to Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La Studios in Malibu and worked with versatile producer Andrew Watt, who helmed Vedder’s 2022 solo album, Earthling, and has...

A champion of complex comedic discourse and honest-to-God nuance, Hannah Gadsby both holds back and comes out swinging in their self-facilitated “Gender Agenda.”
The Australian comedian, now on their fourth stand-up special for Netflix, plays it mostly cool in the cheekily named genderqueer showcase — which started streaming on the platform Tuesday, March 5. It’s a consistently strong hour introducing seven less known queer and genderqueer performers from across the globe. Jes Tom, Chloe Petts, Asha Ward, DeAnne Smith, Mx. Dahlia Belle, Krishna Istha, and the mononymous Alok appear at London’s Alexandra Palace in that order.
Kept to roughly seven minutes each, the sharp and sensitive lineup explores everything from using they/them pronouns and attending straight weddings to seeking gender-affirming care and hooking up while taking hormones. It’s a potentially life-changing opportunity for both the comedians (only some of whom have been on Netflix before now) and curious subscribers,...

Plus, wind down and whet your appetite with new seasons of the hit competition series “Blown Away” and “Is It Cake?,” premiering on March 8 and 29, respectively.

At the end of May, the streamer is dropping the Schwarzenegger-starring spy comedy Fubar, in which the former California governor and Top Gun: Maverick’s Monica Barbaro play a father and daughter who discover they’ve each been secretly working as CIA operatives as they’re forced to team up and get to know each other’s true selves.

Comedian Hannah Gadsby got famous for quitting comedy. But in their newest comedy special, titled Something Special, they do something they consider much more difficult: fall in love
The Australian comedian, who uses they/them pronouns, became a household name in 2019 after releasing their explosive and eye-opening special Nanette. A deconstructed comedy that was more primal scream and scathing rebuke of assault, homophobia, and trauma than a bucket of laughs, Nanette took Gadbsy from a comedian desperate to quit to a fan-favorite ready to explore what comedy and pain could look like together.

It might seem like Hannah Gadsby has toned things down. After dismantling stand-up itself with the comedy special Nanette and using the follow-up Douglas to tell another batch of raw and personal stories, their new outing Something Special delivers nothing but upbeat jokes in a conventionally structured hour. What’s more, it’s on Netflix, even though Gadsby criticized the streamer for its support of Dave Chappelle. Superficially, this smacks of selling out.

Comedian Hannah Gadsby is speaking up about the controversial ties the Sackler family has to their upcoming art show.
Gadsby, who uses they/them pronouns, co-creates the exhibit “It’s Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby” at the Brooklyn Museum, a show dedicated to unwrapping the complicated legacy of the artist. The program’s curators also include Catherine Morris, Sackler Senior Curator for the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art.
“I’m doing a show at the Brooklyn Museum. There’s one Sackler on the board [trustee emerita Elizabeth A. Sackler]. We vetted this. Apparently, they’ve separated their earning streams from the problematic one,” Gadsby told Variety. “I mean, take that with a grain of salt. Doesn’t matter what cultural institution you work with in America, you’re going to be working with billionaires and there’s not a billionaire on this planet that is not fucked up. It is just morally reprehensible.

Hannah Gadsby wins us over thanks to her amiable personality based on the following premise: we’re all doomed, so let’s have fun for the next hour.
Hannah Gadsby: Something Special
We aren’t going to say that good Hannah isn’t right, she obviously is. In this show she brings us up to date, plenty of irony, on the current affairs and social controversies … Everything told in a subtle, intelligent way, peppered with anecdotes about everyday life and the recent marriage of our hostess, who does not hesitate to dig into her personal issues and tell us about them.
Very fun and with a lot of undertone irony, with the cleverness of taking serious issues lightly and being serious about mundane matters.
It is part of the comedy and laughter strategy: to break mental schemes. Undoubtedly, Hannah Gadsby achieves this with her very particular style.

Must-watch comedy series, eye-opening documentaries and an expansion of the “Bridgerton” universe are among the noteworthy additions to Netflix this month. May 12 sees the premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix original film “The Mother,” in which she plays an assassin lured back in for one last job. As the search for the next “Squid Game” continues, South Korea brought out the big guns at MipTV, introducing several scripted and unscripted offerings. These includes FormatEast’s intergenerational game show “Gganbu Race,” inspired by the Netflix smash hit.
“It’s a slang term meaning close friends and companions. Kids would say that when forming teams to play games,” said producer Fay Zhang during the K Formats: The Next Big Hits from Korea session, mentioning “Squid Game’s” episode where the main character joined forces with female and older contestants.
“Everyone thought they would lose. They won, because of an unexpected synergy effect. Our main concept is to overcome prejudice and win through cooperation beyond age.”
The show will see juniors and seniors battling for prize money. They have to choose partners not knowing which games they will play, but there is a twist: the bigger the age difference, the bigger the prize.

The special, which was filmed at the Sydney Opera House in Fall 2022, is produced by Guesswork Television and executive produced by Gadsby, director Jenney Shamash, Kevin Whyte and Kathleen McCarthy.
Gadsby’s latest special comes after they filmed the 2018 comedy sensation “Nanette” at the Opera House, which went on to win a Peabody award and a Primetime Emmy award. Their follow-up, “Douglas,” was nominated for two Primetime Emmy awards and won an Aacta Award.

Hannah Gadsby’s third comedy special at Netflix is titled “Something Special” and will premiere on the platform on May 9.
The special comes out of a multi-title deal Gadsby signed at Netflix in 2022, which includes both the solo standup taping and a multi-comic special featuring gender-diverse comedians with Gadsby as the host.
Described as a “feel good set,” “Something Special” features Gadsby discussing their 2021 wedding to their producer Jenney Shamash, more than one traumatic encounter with a bunny and more. It was taped at the Sydney Opera House in fall 2022 as a part of Gadsby’s most recent world tour, titled “Body of Work.”
Gadsby’s first Netflix special, “Nanette,” debuted in 2018 and focused on their experience as a lesbian in Australia as the country debated whether or not to legalize same-sex marriage. Their second special, “Douglas,” expanded on the LGBTQ issues discussed in “Nanette” while also touching on the anti-vax movement,...

Cast your mind back to April of 2017, when Lucasfilm was busy celebrating 40 years of Star Wars, and you’ll no doubt remember the seismic jolt of excitement that swept across the Internet.
For it was here, under the bright lights of Florida’s Orange County Convention Center, where the Powers That Be officially lifted the curtain on The Last Jedi. But in keeping with the franchise’s knack for secrecy, soon after the Star Wars community caught a glimpse of those crimson posters and inaugural teaser, Rian Johnson’s sci-fi sequel was placed back under lockdown, where it remained all summer long.
That radio silence finally came to an end earlier last month, when Lucasfilm debuted the first full-length trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It gave us a lot to unpack, too – from Kylo Ren’s murky moral compass to the brooding Luke Skywalker, the sequel’s most...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a great film. No one can deny that. It introduced a whole new generation to that galaxy far, far away and also relaunched the franchise on the big screen in a very satisfying manner. However, longtime fans will have no doubt noticed the many similarities between the J.J. Abrams-directed flick and A New Hope, especially when it came to the general plot beats and themes running throughout the movie.
Now, with Star Wars: The Last Jedi looming on the horizon, people are starting to wonder if Rian Johnson will follow a similar path and draw heavily from The Empire Strikes Back. After all, it’d be tempting to do so, given that film’s status as one of the greatest sequels ever made. Not only that, but a lot of what we’ve seen from Episode VIII so far does seem to echo certain things from Empire.

We’re now very much into the final countdown for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Lucasfilm and Disney seem to be taking a rather intuitive approach to marketing Episode 8 of the iconic franchise.
With Star Wars: The Force Awakens having done little to dispel the concerns of fans that the modern reboot of the series would be more of a remake than the addition of original material, the studio behind the juggernaut endeavour is now working hard to emphasize the idea that this movie will deliver something previously unseen.
Having released all the official trailers for the film (we presume), we’re now getting more focused behind-the-scenes featurettes – short videos in which cast and crew wax lyrical about making the movie we’ve yet to see. In the latest one, we have writer-director Rian Johnson talking about the reverence he feels for the property, and for the cast members...

Before Star Wars: The Force Awakens released, fans were full of questions: Where is Luke? Who is Kylo Ren? Why is that Stormtrooper a good guy? Thankfully, after seeing the movie we now know the answer to all of those – but a bunch of others have taken their place. Is Ren now irredeemable? What’s the true identity of Supreme Leader Snoke? And, the question we’ll be focusing on today: just who is Rey?
As brilliantly played by Daisy Ridley, Rey was the beating heart of the aforementioned film – a modern day Luke Skywalker and a new female hero in a world where blockbusters still don’t have enough of those. It’s a testament to how great the character is that streams of people have been flocking to the internet to theorize about her identity.

It’s been one heck of a busy week for the Star Wars faithful, and it looks like Lucasfilm intends on continuing that momentum as we head into the weekend. That’s because they’ve now released a new TV spot for The Last Jedi, and though it hasn’t made its way online just yet, we’ve got a recording of it for you up above. We suggest you check it out, too, as there’s some additional dialogue and even a few new shots here that didn’t make it into the recent trailer.
Admittedly, it’s not much, but the new line comes right at the start from Luke, as he asks Rey, “why are you here?” The extra shots, meanwhile, seem to be of Bb-8 in what appears to be Poe’s X-Wing and what looks to be an extra glimpse of Finn during his fight with Phasma.

Even those who’ve watched it a hundred times might still have missed this tiny reference to Return of the Jedi that was hidden within it, though.
In the trailer, we finally get to see the follow-up to the cliffhanger at the end of The Force Awakens, as Luke accepts his old lightsaber from Rey. In this moment, we see a close-up of his robotic hand. As it lacks human-like skin, fans weren’t previously sure whether this was the same cybernetic limb he had in Return of the Jedi.
But, if you look closely, you can see that the plate across the back of the hand is damaged. This is the exact same place...

Supreme Leader Snoke may be comparable to Emperor Palpatine in that Andy Serkis’ humanoid alien has been angled as the ultimate big bad of Disney’s current Star Wars saga, but whereas the prequels outlined every step of Palpatine’s rise (descent?) into Darth Sidious, Rian Johnson has vowed to exercise some restraint when it comes to Snoke and his place in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Because let’s face it: when you know all there is to know about a movie monster, suddenly it isn’t so scary. As for the creative process involved in bringing Snoke to life, Andy Serkis recently spoke to Business Insider (via ComicBook.com) about his screen villain and, specifically, what it was like to develop Snoke’s booming voice. “When I found you, I sensed raw, untamed power. And beyond that, something truly special.”

It’s shaping up to be a busy, busy two months for Daisy Ridley.
The British actress, who will soon be named as one of the primary suspects in Fox’s Murder On the Orient Express, has been placed front and center now that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is looming large on the horizon. Indeed, Rian Johnson’s sequel recently enjoyed a big splash thanks to Monday’s grand trailer unveiling, which has since spawned countless debates and far-flung fan theories.
Getting back to Daisy Ridley, though, the actress recently took part in a Vogue cover shoot (via Cbm), and it didn’t take long before the conversation veered toward Lucasfilm’s galaxy far, far away. Ridley was naturally coy when pressed on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but the so-hot-right-now actress did touch on Rey, who is said to be the beating heart of the December blockbuster.

In recent years, the likes of Terminator: Genysis’ Alan Taylor and Kingsman: The Golden Circle‘s Matthew Vaughn have revealed that they were left fuming after their films’ marketing departments dropped a massive reveal that they would have preferred been kept secret.
The Last Jedi‘s Rian Johnson won’t be one of those directors, though, as he has made sure to keep a tight hold on the marketing for his upcoming Star Wars movie. Going into this episode of Twin Peaks, there was a buzz around it. Something special was going to happen, and of course fans were excited. Would this mean that Agent Cooper (Kyle Maclachlan) was finally going to wake up in the body of Dougie? Was Sherilyn Fenn finally returning as Audrey Horne? Welcome to Twin Peaks, where nothing is as you expect it.
With the Evil Cooper out of jail, where would this episode go? The answer to that is to give us a performance from Nine Inch Nails, then show us the genesis of true evil, born out of the greatest evil ever created by human hands.
To probably everybody’s surprise, instead of another episode of Dougie drinking his coffee and Evil Cooper being evil, we take a trip back to 1945 and the Manhattan Project. This of course was the test detonation of the Atomic Bomb. Why is this event significant?...
