Grants Pass, Ore. -- The psychiatrist who opened the Oregon State Hospital's doors to filming of the 1975 Academy Award-winning movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" has died.
Dr. Dean Brooks died May 30 at a retirement home in Salem at age 96, family members said. He had been in declining health for several weeks after a fall.
Brooks' daughter Dennie Brooks said Friday the film's producers were turned down by all the other mental hospitals they approached. But her father, who was the Salem hospital's superintendent, saw the value of the movie in starting a national discussion about mental health and the responsibility of institutions to do no harm.
She said Dean Brooks also thought being part of a movie would be fun for him and for patients. He ended up playing a small role in the film – which was based on a 1962 Ken Kesey novel and starred Jack Nicholson – and making sure patients were involved,...

In 1975, filmmaker Milos Forman adapted to film Ken Kesey's novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and the result was a stark, realistic portrayal of adjustments at a mental hospital to the newly committed Randall P. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson); as patients of the hospital adjust to the newcomer's eccentricities, the staff, headed by Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher), do their best not to adjust, and do as much enforcing as humanly possible to keep McMurphy in line.
McMurphy, after all, is under an extra amount of supervision, as the hospital administrators have doubts as to whether McMurphy suffers from any sort of mental illness that would allow him to stay at the hospital, rather than fulfill his obligations as mandated by the judge's sentence; he has quite a rap sheet, consisting mostly of assaults, and one of statutory rape from a girl who lied about her age. In a single...

Warner Home Video's 35th Anniversary Edition of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a true collector's item offering up an impressive package of extras as well as a Blu-ray disc that's not exactly like the previously released 2008 Digibook edition. However, packaging and extras aside the real bonus here is the film. It's a film that doesn't age and simply seems to get better each time you watch it.
I can't remember the last time I watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and I didn't own it until now, and now that I do it's hard to imagine not having it as part of my collection. First instinct would be to say this isn't a film that tremendously benefits from a high-definition upgrade, but when comparing screen captures from the previously released DVD edition to this Blu-ray release you can see improved detail, flesh tones seem far more...

Chicago – One of the most-beloved films of arguably the most important period in film history hits Blu-ray this week in a lavish “Ultimate Collector’s Edition” courtesy of the studio that does this kind of thing better than anyone else. With unique physical collectibles to go with great special features and a new HD transfer of the 35-year-old film, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” has lost none of its power.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” has long been one of those films that I admire and respect more than thoroughly love as much as I do some of its ’70s colleagues. It’s not my favorite film of its era, not my favorite Jack Nicholson performance, and not even my favorite Milos Forman film. And it won Best Picture in a year when that category was Stacked. I simply adore fellow nominees “Barry Lyndon,...

If you're at all like me, 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' is one of those movies that sits on your list of all-time favorites, but that automatic appreciation also makes it seem like one you may only seldom feel the need to either watch or own. Warner Home Video, however, is making the film one of this month's must-have releases with their new Ultimate Collector's Edition, which not only includes high-definition presentation of the film, a commentary track by the filmmakers, and a generous collection of bonus materials, but a 52-page commemorative hardcover book, a deck of cast-inspired playing cards, and reproductions of the film's marketing materials.
To celebrate the release of the new Blu-ray set, Whv offered Cinematical an exclusive clip from "Completely Cuckoo," a "comprehensive 87-minute retrospective" about the making and the legacy of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.' In the video below,...
