Cannes: Loco Films Enlists for ‘Battle’ (Exclusive)

Newly launched Paris-based outfit Loco Films has acquired international sales to Sergey Mokritskiy’s “The Battle for Sevastopol,” a WWII-set drama that topped the Russian B.O. this year.

Loco Films was just created by former Rezo Films’ boss Laurent Danielou in partnership with Enrique Gonzalez Kuhn, who previously ran acquisitions at Alta Films.

With a big budget of $20 million, the Russian/Ukrainian co-production chronicles the epic journey of Ludmila Pavlichenko, a Russian female sniper nicknamed “Lady Death.”

Pavlichenko reportedly killed 300 people in one month and was enlisted by Soviet ruler Joseph Stalin in 1942 to convince the Americans to get involved in the war.

“The Battle for Sevastopol” was produced by Ukraine’s Kinorob and Russia’s New People Film Co.

Lady Death #1 Diamond Edition revealed, complete with actual diamond on cover

The Lady Death #1 Diamond Edition features a solid metal front cover, enhanced with an actual one-carat diamond appraised by Scottsdale Fine Jewelers at over $6000. This diamond will be set in the hilt of Lady Death’s sword.

“In our storied career of groundbreaking special cover enhancements, the diamond edition is special,” says Coffin Comics publisher Brian Pulido. “We’ve been the first to introduce velvet, leather and metal covers to the comic book community. The diamond edition is a testament to the unbreakable, eternal quality of Lady Death, an independent comics icon for over two decades.”

Lady Death was first introduced to the world of comics in December 1991 with a guest-starring role in the infamous comic book series Evil Ernie. She then spun off into her own series Lady Death in February 1994 triggering in part the “bad Girl” movement that swept the comics industry in the nineties.
