Todd Haynes' "Carol" is shaping up to be the movie to beat this awards season. Based on Patricia Highsmith's The Price of Salt, the romantic drama stars Cate Blanchett as an older, married woman who is developing some strong feelings towards a seasonal shopgirl played by Rooney Mara. And the actresses may have to prepare their acceptance speeches! "Carol" leads the pack of nominees for the 31st Independent Spirit Awards!
I'm also very happy that "Tangerine" by Sean Baker received 4 nods for Best Feature, Director, Female Lead (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez), and Supporting Female for Mya Taylor. shot mostly on iPhone, this small-budget wonder is truly what the Independent Spirit is all about!
Some of my few gripes are not a whole lot of love for the fantastic "Room" (just screenplay, female lead for Brie Larson, and editing -- what about the awesome child actor Jason Tremblay?), and that...

In its 31st year, the Film Independent Spirt Awards showcase the best that modest (and, occasionally, lower budget) filmmaking has to offer annually. This year, it’s little surprise the the stellar Carol is leading the pack with six nominations, while Spotlight and Beasts of No Nation are close behind with five each. On the actual smaller scale of productions, the iPhone-shot drama Tangerine picked up a heft four nominations, a film that, alongside Anomalisa and the aforementioned titles, rounds out their Best Feature category.

Today's ratings bulletin isn't packed with big name titles, but it does include two of the biggest blockbusters left to hit theaters this summer, both earning PG-13 ratings and both carrying some "partial nudity". First is Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, and its PG-13 rating should come as no surprise as every film in the Mission franchise has received that rating, but the PG-13 rating for the latest Terminator might have some fans a bit disappointed even if they all expected it. The PG-13 for Terminator Genisys makes it the second of five films in the Terminator franchise to hit theaters with a lower MPAA rating. Terminator Salvation was also rated PG-13 back in 2009, but we're talking about a franchise that was really built on the idea of being a hard-edged, sci-fi action thriller so it's always a bit interesting when we see studios hoping to appeal to an audience...

It’s rare that we can point to one specific point in time where media really changed; the way we communicate is a flow of evolution rather than a series of specific formative events. But there are some cases where we really can say “it all began here.” One point in time is the set of debates between […]

The middle of Spring actually means a new selection of summer blockbusters to look forward to, and with a ton of big-budget films slated to come out within the next few months and beyond, the summer of 2015 looks like one to remember.
From the new Mad Max (which is already on our end-of -year top ten list event though we haven’t yet seen it) to Avengers, Poltergeists, male strippers, talking teddy bears, and a reboot of the Jurassic Park franchise, this summer’s trips to the theaters will be jam-packed with sequels and new tales. From May 1st right through to the end of August, some of the movies on our list could wind up on year-end “best of” lists or even receive some Oscar talk by December.
Grab your calendar, because Wamg has a rundown of this summer’s films we’re most excited about, so check them out below!

Netflix came to this year’s Sundance Film Festival as the digital spoiler, ready to spend more than traditional studios to lure the top indie movies away from theatrical distribution – but so far they haven’t spoiled a thing, as the big acquisitions in a healthy market have mainly gone to the usual distribution suspects.
Multiple dealmakers have told TheWrap that Netflix came to Sundance with a specific strategy to outbid the other studios for movies in an attempt to build a track record as a buyer of major festival titles. A longtime supporter of independent film, Netflix has been...

Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira have discussed their long-running rivalry in a documentary for ITV4.
Keane and Vieira: Best of Enemies will see the former midfielders talk face-to-face about their combative relationship.
The pair's rivalry dates back to their Premier League football careers when they were captains of opposing teams Manchester United and Arsenal.
During the programme, the retired footballers will relive the most tense, frustrating and important moments of their careers, including the so-called 'Battle of Old Trafford' in 2003.
The sportsmen go on to discuss their infamous argument in the tunnel at Highbury in 2005, when Keane stepped in to defend teammate Gary Neville during a row with Vieira.
Viewers can also expect to hear Keane and Vieira's honest opinions of managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger.
Keane and Vieira: Best of Enemies airs tonight (December 10) on ITV4 at 10pm.
