Knock Off.Tsui Hark’s Knock Off (1998) begins with an amniotic scene: baby dolls underwater, suggesting birth or possibly rebirth. Submerged off the coast of Hong Kong, which passed from British to Chinese governance in the historic 1997 Handover, the dolls gesture toward new beginnings. But these aren’t flesh-and-blood infants: they’re products, manufactured imitations of the real thing and copies of each other. Detached from any sense of originality, these toys can be reproduced and distributed wherever the market leads. The movement of the dolls through the water evokes the global flow of goods under late capitalism, as well as the postmodernist shift away from reality into simulacra. Moreover, their synthetic nature complicates the birth allegory—in what sense was the Handover a “real” rebirth? This is a fitting prologue for a film obsessed with the ersatz. Delivering on its title, Knock Off tracks two expat businessmen in Hong...

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines. In her new pop anthem “Motorbike,” Poppy takes to the streets, and she is calling her fans to the dance floor. Unlike the metal performances that put her on the map, the club-ready single continues to present a new side to the multi-hyphenate.
“That girl on a motorbike, going where she wants to. Girl on a motorbike, never checks the rear view. Girl on a motorbike, no one can confine her. Epitome of freedom, I’m following behind her,” sings Poppy, with Downtown Los Angeles flashing behind her.

Poppy will unleash a new album titled Zig on October 27th via Sumerian Records. In advance of the LP’s release and a previously announced late summer co-headlining US tour with Pvris, she has dropped the single “Knockoff.”
Poppy had previously teased the new album with the strong lead single and album opener “Church Outfit” — a Heavy Song of the Week selection — back in April.
The only knock on that track was its rather brief duration, though the latest single “Knockoff” effectively mitigates that criticism. It’s the second song on the album, clocking in at three minutes, and acts as a continuation of “Church Outfit” with a strong electronic beat and full-blown industrial-pop production.
Zig will mark Poppy’s first LP since rejoining Sumerian following a brief stint with Republic Records. The label change is indicative of Poppy’s shift toward a heavier and more industrial sound over the years.

Poppy doesn’t want any fake love. On Wednesday, the musician released her dark pop single “Knockoff,” along with the announcement that she’ll be releasing her LP Zig on Oct. 27.
The Le3ay-directed video splices clips of her in a skin-tone color leotard engaging in choreography surrounded by dancers with an image of her staring into a giant red orb that by the end of the video transforms into a large, blood-looking splatter.

One of the most important parts of any action movie made before the new millennium is the so-called “boss fight.” For the uninitiated, a boss fight is the ultimate showdown between good and evil. After all the henchmen and various other obstacles-with-limbs have been cleared away, it’s time to get it on with the Big Bad.
Ever since Bruce Lee fought Han and his iron claw in that hall of mirrors at the end of Enter The Dragon, the merit of any martial arts film has largely been judged by its main adversary. And Jean-Claude Van Damme’s filmography is no different.
Running the gamut from muscle-bound pulverisers with nothing between the ears to corrupt businessmen with a penchant for picking the absolute worst Belgium to mess with, Van Damme has spin kicked just about every type of bad guy imaginable.

Jean Claude Van Damme is widely known for his brilliant kicking ability and martial arts background. As a young kid, Van Damme would train in the martial arts Shotokan karate and Kickboxing, during this time he also studied Ballet, which would be used more for his flexibility and strength in his legs.
He has a great kickboxing record on 19 fight, 18 wins, one loss, which he won at a later date in the rematch. But when it comes to his movies, he has a great influence within Asian Cinema, using many directors and choreographers in his movies. In his early movie career he starred in movies such as Bloodsport and Kickboxer, showing the arts of Ninjutsu and Muay Thai. Knock off the wailing and gnashing of teeth: Family Guy’s Brian has indeed risen from the dead. As anticipated, tonight's episode marked the resurrection of the recently deceased pooch, whose return was made possible by a trip to Santa and a time machine. "And thus endeth our warm, fuzzy holiday lesson: Never take those you love for granted, for they can be gone in a flash," Seth MacFarlane tweeted tonight. Seth MacFarlane just taught some child the true meaning of Christmas and the rest of us now live with that knowledge.

Hong Kong director, producer, and screenwriter Tsui Hark is to receive the Maverick Director Award at the 8th Rome Film Festival (Nov 8-17).
The award is dedicated to auteurs who have contributed to the invention of a new, non-conformist cinema.
Marco Müller, artistic director of the Rome Film Festival, said: “Tsui Hark will always be one step ahead. He has never stopped experimenting, delving deep into the genres, exploring the limits of technology as he follows its non-stop evolution.
“He has reinterpreted the Chinese filmmaking tradition, turning the codes and conventions of Western cinema upside down.”
Hark has had a prolific film career with past credits including Double Team (1997), Knock Off (1998) and Seven Swords (2005) as well as the film series Once Upon A Time in China and the A Chinese Ghost Story trilogy.

Entourage is the brilliant HBO comedy-drama set amongst the celebrity infested Hollywood lifestyle. The show follows the story of rising star Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) and his closest friends as they descend on tinsel town from their native Queens, New York and begin to live the movie star lifestyle.
Entourage is the brainchild of Doug Ellin and loosely based around Mark Wahlberg’s experiences when he was an up and coming movie star. The show centres on the close friendship of actor Vince, his Brother Johnny ‘Drama’ (Kevin Dillon), his best friend and manager Eric (Kevin Connolly) and close pal Turtle (Jerry Ferrara). Aided by Hollywood hotshot agent Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) the group negotiates the weird and wonderful world of Hollywood stardom and all it’s trappings.
It is a show you should most definitely see and the camaraderie, friendship and bond between the characters brings out a fantastic “boys will be boys” comedy.

Marty McFly's shoes from "Back to the Future Part II" actually exist! Well, sort of, anyway. Regardless of the circumstances or limitations, the release of the light-up (if not self-tying) Nike Mags (which can be yours for around $5,000), means The Future Is Now, so let's go back to the past and take a look at some of the best movie footwear from yesteryears.

1. "Knock Off" (the knock-off shoes)
One of Jean Claude Van Damme's most underrated films, "Knock Off" features director Tsui Hark's trademark hyperactive and wildly imaginative camera work. We're especially fond of the picture-on-picture that comes up (for no particular reason) when Van Damme reaches into a box and pulls out a watch, but our favorite random flourish has to be when we enter a shoe from the point of view of Van Damme's foot as he prepares to participate in a street race where he...

Most formats take a while to come into their own. Who can remember the first horrible DVDs? The first discs were defined by a paucity of special features, with most blurbs proudly boasting “Scene Access” and “Interactive Menus” as the carrot for you to give us those old VHS tapes. Then there was the packaging itself which came, depending on the studio, in a variety of horrible designs (the cardboard ones proffered by Warner Brothers stand out as especially awful in my memory). Disney were likewise slow to live up to recognise the potential of the new format, with the studio’s first releases – which, as it happens, included Alice in Wonderland – resolutely vanilla. Though you always sensed the marketing wing was holding back the good stuff for the fourth or fifth re-issue a couple of years down the line.

I believe we can consider this a recommendation: "A few times each decade, the Museum of Modern Art mounts a film retrospective so focused, inclusive, and downright eye-opening, that it begs to become a daily fix," writes J Hoberman in the Voice. "Weimar Cinema, 1919–1933: Daydreams and Nightmares is one such retro. Knock off work in time for the 4:30 shows — you can use this column as your doctor's note — or rush through your dinner to make the 7:30 ones, and don't forget weekends. Moma's 75-feature survey of Germany's groundbreaking silent and fertile early-sound cinema invites total, obsessive immersion.... For the next four months, there won't be a better, richer, more compelling course in film history available anywhere in town."...

Though sadly we don't have any footage from Go Ohara's Gothic And Lolita Psycho to share with you a trip through the market building in Cannes gave me the chance to witness the fruits of the collaboration between Geisha Versus Ninja helmer Go Ohara and uber-splatter effects man Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police).
Though the footage included is still quite raw this looks to be a significant step up for Ohara after Geisha Versus Ninja. I don't mean that in terms of budget (read: still low) but the level of action and art design is significantly higher. Lots of martial arts work, both wire assisted and natural. the loli-goth getup makes for a lot of interesting visuals and Nishimura provides his customary levels of massive arterial spray along with some quality surprises. Hopefully we'll be able to show something to you soon but this one will definitely be of interest to Japanese cult fans.

Hopefully we'll be able to show something to you soon but this one will definitely be of interest to Japanese cult fans.

Further to our story back in December, we have a quick update on Go Ohara’s (“Geisha vs Ninja”) latest foray into splatter horror, Gothic & Lolita Psycho. Out of the blue the Ohara bros dropped us an email with a first look at the films poster, and very intriguing it is too. We’ve also been told a trailer is on the way,so as soon as we get it, you will. Synopsis: Gothic and Lolita…the fashion reflects her dark and childish mental state. Yuki, the heroine, saw her mother killed by cruel gangs. Now she vows revenge! Knock off the enemies with her transformable umbrella. So gorgeous and so savage…Who killed mother? What the hell are the gangs? What is the truth and purpose that father knows? Her coming terrible destiny is going to littered with the dead.

Word of the collaboration between director Go Ohara (Geisha Versus Ninja) and effects man Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) on Gothic And Lolita Psycho leaked out a while back, a little before the producers were prepared to have word in public, but with the film now wrapped we've got a first look at the poster art for the picture. Yes, this is a hardcore splatter picture riffing on the Japanese loligoth culture. Here's the official synopsis:
Gothic and Lolita ... the fashion reflects her dark and childish mentality. Yuki, the heroine, saw her mother killed by cruel gangs. She vows revenge! Knock off the enemies with her transformable umbrella. So gorgeous and so savage...
Who killed mother? What the hell are the gangs? What is the truth and purpose that father knows? Her coming terrible destiny is going with the dead bodies.

Oh, Bey. That's just not fair. With The Blood Bond - the debut feature from Bey Logan's start up production house B&E Productions - now in post production, the label has announced the rest of their upcoming production slate.
And what do you think is going to attract all the attention? Will it be animated feature Little Gobie? Michael Wong's Rogue Option? Or, perhaps, could it be Choy Li Fut, a period action film to be co-produced by and star the iconic Gordon Liu?
Nope. Not when the next film to go into production is beach volleyball themed action comedy Beach Spike, starring Chrissie Chau - pictured above - and The Blood Bond's Phoenix Chou. Let's be honest. This could be horrible and still make a big bag of money.
Find details on the entire slate below:

While I'm no fan of the Japanese gore-fests like Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl or Tokyo Gore Police, I know many of you are, including some of our own team like our London correspondent, Ben Austwick, so I can't overlook this news our friends at 24Fps put up. What is promised as "a martial arts action, Japanese grotesque art Gothic & Lolita explosion" will be directed by Go Ohara (“Geisha vs Ninja”). Jyun Nakajima (”Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl”) is set to produce with special effects and gore being done by Yoshihiro Nishimura (”Tokyo gore police,” “The Machine Girl,“ “Robo Geisha”).

Attention cult splatter hounds: Going in to production on Monday for a two week shoot is Gothic And Lolita Psycho. Beyond the core concept of a Loli-Goth killer, why pay attention? The producer is Jyun Nakajima, whose recent credits include Vampire Girl Versus Frankenstein Girl. Special effects? Those come courtesy of Tokyo Gore Police helmer Yoshihiro Nishimura. Direction? That's from Go Ohara, the Chanbara Beauty and Death Trance action choreographer who first stepped into the director's chair for Geisha Versus Ninja. They've got a well known fashion designer on board, too.

What smells like money and workout sweat? According to the La Times Hero Complex Blog, that smell is probably New Moon star Taylor Lautner’s potential next project: Max Steel. The film will chronicle the adventures of a 19-year old extreme athlete who accidentally becomes a nano-technologically enhanced secret agent. Max Steel might sound familiar because: A. It is a cheap “James Bond Jr.” knock off…which is already a cheap James Bond Knock off. B. It was originally a semi successful late 90s early 2000s CG animated show (ala "Beast Wars" or "Reboot") and ongoing toy line. See here. Despite never catching on huge in the Us, Max Steel is apparently more popular around the world. The writers on the project, J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani, are also writing the script for Brett Ratner’s Youngblood adaptation. I’m a little surprised Paramount is dusting off this franchise for a film. XXX...

If you thought that was AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles you streamed for free or downloaded this week for $.25 from BlueBeat.com, it's an understandable error. The music sounded identical to songs by those artists.
But the site's owner Hank Risan tells Fast Company his catalog of music doesn't include tracks by the original artists, who, of course, own the publishing rights to their music (many have long resisted posting their music for sale online). His tunes aren't technically Beatles tracks at all but, rather, "psycho-acoustic simulations" of Beatles songs performed and broadcast on BlueBeat and made available for download.
Performances? By, what, some kind of virtual cover band? "Exactly!" Risan says. "Only they don't eat as much. And you don't have to pay them union wages!" It was if we'd summed up a concept he'd long been trying to explain to the Recording Industry Association...

Justin Long, Uma Thurman and more chime in on which scary movies they would like to remake if given the chance.

Everyone knows that Hollywood is addicted to franchises, sequels, reboots and all manner of cinematic rehashings of the pop-culture past. Over 75 percent of the 30 highest-grossing films of the last three years were based on an existing entertainment franchise, which just goes to show there's a reason studios keep reimagining movie history instead of creating something new: audiences love them too.
But do actors? With Halloween almost upon us, we wanted to know if the folks out in La-La Land secretly had a horror flick they're dying to remake.
Tom Hanks' fave picks — "Night of the Living Dead" and " Nosferatu" — have already been refashioned in one form or another, so the Oscar-winner...

Update: we have an interview with the gay contestant at the bottom of the post!
I've written before about So You Think You Can Dance's Nigel Lythgoe and his cretinous attitude toward what he terms "effeminate dancers." Well, that condescending attitude was on full-blown display during last night's auditions in Denver as the show returned for its fifth season.
The show featured its first same-sex couple — Misha Belfer and Mitchel Kibel — who were introduced with incredibly condescending dramatics including a clip of "It's Raining Men" and many "dramatic" shots of the two swirling about.
During the couple's audition (Misha is gay and Mitchel is straight), Lythgoe and fellow judges Mary Murphy and Sonya Tayeh kept exchanging bemused looks, and at one point Nigel covers his eyes as if he's too horrified by what he's seeing. Then when the two guys take a tumble, Nigel laughs at them.
Okay, much...
