Slamdance Film Festival has revealed the winners of its annual Sparky Awards, with “Waiting for the Light to Change” and “Where the Road Leads” taking home the narrative feature grand jury prize and audience award, respectively.
Directed by Linh Tran, narrative feature grand jury prize winner “Waiting for the Light to Change” is an “exceptional act of patience, restraint, courage and authenticity,” according to the jury. “Filmmaker Linh Tran paints a remarkably honest portrait of vulnerability that breaks open the heart of its audience, demanding sincerity and drawing deep reflection of the fractured nature of ourselves and the complex, human spaces between each of us.”
The Agbo Fellowship, which includes a 25,000 scholarship and mentorship from Slamdance alumni Joe and Anthony Russo, was awarded to Tij D’Oyen. He presented his narrative short film, “Lollygag,” during the festival.

Update: Actress Tawny Kitaen died on May 7 from dilated cardiomyopathy. The manner of death was ruled natural today by the Orange County Sheriff’s Dept. in California.
The spokesman said other significant conditions with Kitaen included: mild coronary atherosclerosis; mirtazapine, mirtazapine metabolite, alprazolam, acetaminophen, pregabalin, and hydrocodone.
Earlier: Tawny Kitaen, an actress whose stunning presence in two Whitesnake videos helped propel that band’s multiplatinum albums to No. 1 in the late ’80s, died Friday in Newport Beach at age 59. No cause of death has been determined, according to numerous reports.

“I just wanna tell you that your vote is important because it’s the least you can do to participate in our democracy,” Tweedy says in the clip. “All you have to do is think about how hard people work to take that right away from you and to try to keep you from voting to realize it’s pretty important.

I came of age (whatever that means) in the ’80s, so I’m always very interested in what Severin Films re-releases from that era; some I’ve seen and some I haven’t, and others I’ve never even heard of before. The two new releases from Severin I’ll be looking at today fit in that middle category—ones I know of very well, but yet remained unseen. Until now, that is; Severin has seen fit to load up the fantasy/actioner/softcore Gwendoline (1984) and the harrowingly violent The Boys Next Door (1985) with everything a viewer could want to know.
Gwendoline (1984): Otherwise known as The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak, this film is goofy, immature, leering, and has stunning set design. Yes, it’s French; how’d you guess? Writer/director Just Jaeckin (Lady Chatterley’s Lover) has concocted an almost unwieldy mix of Raiders of the Lost Ark,...

Severin Films has been one of those companies for the past five years that have been releasing some great flicks on DVD and Blu-Ray. Now, they announce that they will be handling all future production and marketing for Intervision Picture Corporation. It’s a match made in heaven if you ask me. I am a fan of sleazy cinema. I'm not going to lie. Sometimes I can appreciate it for the art, but sometimes, there really is very little art to it and you just have to meet it on its own terms. Severin Films has taken a very active interest in the European sleaze cinema of the 1970's, and all fans of this genre are better off for it. They've taken the time not only to seek out disgusting little gems from the era, but also taken the effort to at least attempt to contextualize the work by creating extras that are worthy of the film and help the viewer better understand.
Severin's catalog has too many of these titles for me to go over each one individually, but I did manage to get a few tidbits out of Severin founder, David Gregory, regarding the procuring of both the films and the extras they include.

I was talking with a group of people at a local bar over the weekend, and the conversation strayed into a discussion of starlets of the 80’s. Of course, the first woman mentioned was Tawny Kitaen. While she’d appeared in several B-movies, her most notable performance was in a Whitesnake video, rolling around on the hoods of two Jaguars in a white negligee. It was an iconic moment of the 80’s and all the attention should have boosted her movie career. But it didn’t and she started working on television, appearing on Hercules, Married… With Children and Eek The Cat. Her last movie role was in 1997’s Dead Tides, with Roddy Piper and Miles O’Keeffe.
Then, in 2002, her troubles with the law began.
